  • Check out this incredibly well made ration from Ukraine. It rivals the MRE in terms of rugged packaging, but with refreshingly high quality and delicious food that is more in comparison to a French RCIR or Spanish ICR. They really nailed it with this one - and I take my time with properly going about how such a well made ration should be prepared. It could be eaten quickly, but it can also be savored. That is what we do here with this fantastic ration.

I am from Ukraine and I can tell you a little about the history of the creation of the diet. The soldiers were asked: what do you want to be there? They answered the food as our mothers cook at home, so that we feel the warmth of home and know what we are fighting for.
And this is not just a beautiful story, but the truth. This is the task that was set. Prepare food that feels like homemade.
You need to understand something about Ukrainians. We don't like restaurants and cafes. 95% of the food we eat is prepared at home. And we all eat together as a family.

Steve, the low viscosity honey makes perfect sense. You are using it at a comfortable room temperature where you are. In a cold Ukrainian winter, that honey will thicken considerably and be more like other honey you have evaluated in other MREs. If it were ultra-thick at your room temperature, it will be almost impossible to extract from the little envelope when it is -20 deg all day and night.

Russian and Ukrainian are Latin-based languages- it’s just that the written alphabet is different. If you learn the Cyrillic letters, you’re able to sound out written Russian/Ukrainian. Once you do that, many basic and technical words share sounds or bases with English or Romance languages. You won’t be super functional for speaking, but will be able to recognize basic labels and signs like coffee, toilet, stop, restaurant, police, etc.
Of course, we can’t visit now, but I would definitely recommend learning the alphabet on the flight over if I were to travel to a country that speaks Russian or Ukrainian.

I feel like the 4th heating pack wasn't because a specific meal needed it but to allow the soldier to break up their meals into four hot meals if they wanted. And while the tea either needs hot water or multiple hours (cold steeping) the instant coffee could easily be stirred into cold water and immediately consumed. And if you're going to go to the trouble of leaving a cup out overnight with your teabags, it's nice that your able to make two teabags worth.

@@nicolescats2 I bet there's tons of good uses for an extra heating pack. I don't think they cost or weigh much. So it's a case of 'why not?'. I bet that one extra pack per box is worth its weight in gold in a Ukrainian trench. It gets very cold out there in the fall, winter and early spring.
Heat up some water for some coffee or tea. Heat up a water bottle to put in your sleeping bag or something small to put inside your socks or gloves during a watch. Especially at night when you probably don't want to be lighting any fires. The utilities are endless.
I bet they added it after feedback from the guys and girls at the front. It's good to see stuff like that happening. To me it's an indication of a functioning system. Communication and evaluations are happening.

The DPNP-P's are awesome. BUT the problem with all of our MRE's is that the quality and taste varies between contractors who supply them. Some of them are as close to homecooked meals as it gets (you got the right one there). Others - not so much. In any case, they are waaaaaay better than the ones we used to get back in 2015, with all those tin cans. The canned "barley with pork" one was especially atrocious - even the dogs we used to have on our FOP preferred to fast rather than munch on those. But the DPNP-P's - damn! I've cracked open one that was expired 6 months to see what I could salvage for the dog - and guess what? - the food was still good! The jam, the hardtack and the bread were all goners, but all the other stuff held up pretty well.
A couple of comments on our "cossack MRE's" as follows:
    - you can heat those retort packages bu throwing them into a campfire. We used to do just that when we got a chance - to save water.
    - some of the MRE's have transparent plastic spoons. Those are sturdier than the white ones and don't deform so easily when dumped in hot water.
    - the jam packets are great snacks to have in your cargo pocket. Also, we used to mix them with water to get "brombas" - a sort of vitamin beverage to enjoy when it's hot. Also, you can almost make a cake or cobbler with those and some "Kozak" hardtack.
    - speaking of which, the "Kozak" hardtack you got is a rare treat. We used to save them for later snackies - with jam, honey or on its own. With the chicken menu you got, we used to scoop the nore gravy with the hardtack or soak it in it. it's surprisingly good.
    - the dry bread ("sukhari") are great with any soup or dumped in sweet coffee.
    - a lot of the guys loved adding pepper to the pea soup, myself included.
    - any "tushonkas" were saved for later. The catck is that it goes with anything. We used to throw some ramen in the retort, add hot water and boom! Instant morale boost with some added calories.
    - the honey proved to be a great antiseptic for wounds. Some deep recon experience from a combat medic there.
Thanks for your content man. Always an honest opinion. Long-time fan. Слава Україні!)

I think a pack of jalapeno cheese would be great but this thing is fine the way it is. I could see keeping the Chocolate and a pack of those crackers in your pocket for a snack but with the portion size and it being real food (not sugar calories), you probably don't need a snack between meals.

Sign me up for Ukrainian rations all day every day, over any other country. This looks amazing for off-the-shelf. Low sugar/candy content, highly nutritious and fatty meal with starches. The pate is legit and it has a wicked good fruit bar. The Mains are super Eastern European which isn’t really appealing to a western pallet, but if you like old people food (which I do) then you’ll enjoy them.

There are a few versions of it available on Ebay, I presume the soldiers get some version of the contents or other. I've eaten 10 or so different ones now, and they're all pretty similar. The beef kasha with buckwheat is my favorite food to eat on a cold rainy night. E E is the clown. That fruit bar sucks balls btw, there are better versions of the ration that have nice chewing gum and chocolate instead.

You did. The amazing progress Ukrainian forces have made in a mere eight years, with aid and training from NATO forces and most importantly the sheer determination and focus of your people to defend their home, is going in the history books.
Former US general Hertling has lauded your country as having one of the best, most professional armed forces in Europe now. Seriously.
Frankly, in my opinion, Ukrainians (all of you) have proven to be FAR more patriotic and courageous than the loudest, gun-toting, freedom-loving American. This resistance against such overwhelming forces is legendary.

That's one of most popular reforms since 2014, the Soviet-style rations were worse than dog food... Unfortunately, military budget wasn't raised by current government until it's too late. Thankfully volunteers and donations also help (soldiers, engineers, medics, territorial defenses, refugees, internally displaces people, all need food).

As a Czech Republic citizen, I must say that I have been more than impressed by this review of Ukrainian MRE especially when it comes to quality of ingredients. You know, most of the meals you showed to us we Europeans eat in one way or another on a weekly if not daily basis. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, most of the meals you presented looked just great and considering the difficulties of combat situations this is almost like "eating in a restaurant". And as many before myself have suggested, you're still looking at the very basics of our cuisine so you're more than welcome to add local herbs, mushrooms, fruit and whatnots. I mean, there is wild nettle growing pretty much anywhere in these lands and if you added it to the "cooking" period, you would have easily obtained some high-protein greens, because nettle needs some cooking time to be really palatable. But it is nevertheless awesome source of protein and micronutrients. Thank you for this, I've been personally salivating heavily through this video and I am just gonna cook myself some goulash! So I had a UA MRE while I was over there in '17, and I have to say: No UA soldier eats these things as stand alone. They forage for whatever is near by to make them better. They created an AMAZING meal simply by adding some foraged mushrooms. But even as stand alone they aren't bad. Made a good break from the regular MREs I was eating.
