Hey folks, thanks so much for checking out this video and I hope you enjoyed it even half as much as I did eating/filming it. First off, the Pate' translated as "Pork Brain" on both pack's ingredients list on the back of the packs - my only regret was not showing that through my translator. My apologies for not being as thorough as I should have been. Second, there were 3 packs of "Cereal" and I found out after the shoot all 3 packs were different - one has dried meat, another is simply a porridge, and the other was the one we saw - the rice & fruit muesli. I will be doing a short follow-up video of the other 2 packs and will be testing the stove out with the water I will be heating for the two dried cereal mixes. Again, my apologies for not catching this in the video - and next time I will be more attentive to this sorta thing with packs that look almost 100% identical. Third, I ate this over the course of the day, and it was very filling/satisfying - and as with all my reviews where the food is still fresh/edible, I finish the meal after the shoot. Or I at least make a solid effort! Thanks so much for checking this one out - now sit back, relax, and enjoy! -ST Update I just had a very cool Russian fellow translate the pack for me - I stand corrected on "Pork Brains" it was actually: Beef, beef brains, pork fat, onion, starch, salt, water, black pepper, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, Sodium nitrate Translator programs just aren't exactly perfected.. yet! -Thanks for reading!

Steve finally visits Pripyat. Enters an abandoned grocery store. Sees an unopened can of food. This is still intact. Opens the can begins eating.
“You know even though this can was to expire back in circa 1989 and was exposed to radiation it still hasn’t lost its flavor. I’m tasting small notes of cesium 125.”
The packaging on the MRE looks like it came from that era. So that’s why I came up with the Pripyat reference.
Steve have you ever come across any Soviet 1980s MREs?
Just wondered if they exist and what exactly were they? I have seen the reproduction WW 2 era Soviet stuff with the pea soup block etc. I’m just curious what if anything existed during the Brezhnev era?
Do you taste metal?
Rated 3.6, Not great, not terrible.
Noice, lets get this onto a tray
Opens can with can opener. "Nice hiss."
That pink drink was a fiber supplement lemonade, russian metamucil basically. Compensates for the complete lack of vegetable matter in this MRE. That and the apricot bar keeps your poop good.
(Potatos dont really count as vegetables, its more like bread that you grow in the ground)
“Bread that you grow in the ground” is the best way I’ve seen anyone describe potatoes
That is the most Russian way I’ve seen anyone describe potatoes.
@Romemaster I was going to say the same thing. Really good description. I'll remember it, along with all the other weird stuff taking up space in my head. 😅
potato actually has a pretty high fiber content
@tuanthanhtran6919 probability in the skins, but most people cut off the skin.
I just watched a grown man eat a Russian mountain ration for 28 minutes

One of the biggest reasons I enjoy Steve's videos is in order to be a proper taste test reviewer you can't have any dislikes when It comes to food. Ive never heard or seen Steve say "I dont like this particular food so I'm not going to try it". Nope, if its edible Steve is going to clear the thing. You keep making videos and we will continue watching!

Shit ive seen him eat things i didnt think were edible
Which to me is a blessing and a curse.
Organs are a straight no go to me so Liver and Brain is absolutely disgusting to me.
But I'm glad that Steve is able to eat it no problem and give a good opinion on it.
@@hunterallen4231 i can understand where your coming from but if you ever get over it liver is soo good whether its breaded and fried or pan fried with onions and gravy its great
@@bambon6184 I love fried livers! Especially with hot sauce, a pickle, and between 2 crackers. It's crazy that back in the day they would feed it to the kids because they didn't waste and they were considered the throw away parts. Now it's like a delicacy in the South
The green headed matches are supposed to be waterproof and windproof. The straight waterproof matches will be blue and the regular matches will be red. There's also a different color for the strike anywhere matches. All of the colors vary on different countries though so it could be different from my experience.
Yea its different. Usa waterproof matches are often red with a coating, but ive seen green ones here to but they werent made in America, just imported
I came here looking for your comment, thank you.
Green is for Armour piercing matches

Why not just make all matches waterproof and windproof? I'm sure the cost difference would be marginal.

@@spleenforsoul I dunno. Having the, basically, MRE counterpart of Bob Ross look me in the eyes and say "Nice hiss." while opening a pack of crackers might get me a bit hot under the collar. That cherry drink is a fairly common drink in Post-Soviet countries. I used to buy the cherry and pear one when I lived in Kazakhstan. It's definitely more sugar than fruit but I think the aftertaste is what I enjoyed the most.

One of the few channels you can go video surfing through and still find the same legendary quality from years ago. The legend that is Steve.
Something about Steve is very reminiscent of Snake in MGS3, constantly asking how stuff tastes. All of his reviews are almost identical in tone to the way Snake reviews the Colt M1911 he recieves from Eva. "The slide's been polished to a mirror sheen..." is equivalent to "Mmm the cracker has a beautiful creamy undertone, reminiscent of shortbread, really complements the oliy pungence of the cheese spread, similar to some Lithuanian ration cheese but a little more creamy"
If you radio the survival expert after catching or eating an animal either Snake or the other person will do a Steve like review too.

I don't know where the hell did Steve come up with the translation, but that's not what it says on the package at 3:08.
"Мясной паштет" is literally translated as "meat pate" that usually is comprised of mostly ground meat, some liver and vegetables (onions, carrots etc).

MRE's remind me of when my dad lost his house and he said "Were going camping". We camped in San Bernandino mountains for about 6 months stocked up on canned food.
Just as we were running out of food, some prisoner firefighters who, if i remember correctly, were also camping, gave us a massive bag of snacks and some MREs. After scraping by on spam and cornbeef hash, it tasted better than anything I'd ever had in my life. The blueberry cobbler MRE was like fine dining.
What happened after that?
@@danromodawent back to LA area and lived in a homeless shelter on skid row for about a year and a half with my mom(available women's and men's shelters were seperate and far away).
Got horrible foot fungus from bas hygiene, wearing the same shoes for over a year, and walking all day every day(mom loved to walk). Luckily there was a drive one day we stumbled across, where they took care of homeless peoples feet. Probably would've ended up with gangrene if it wasn't for that.
After the homeless shelter the courts did a reassesment of how fit she was as a parent. I hadn't been in school for almost a year so I was put in fostercare and lived at a number of different homes, eventually I was lucky enough to end up in a fosterhome in a nice community with million dollar homes(SoCal, so not a mansion or anything, just a really nice house). I then lived happily ever after. OK there is more to the story but I could be here typing all day lol

I gotta say, the package everything came in looks very useful: shaving bowl, keeps things off a wet ground, handy storage container and one wonders if you couldnt just fill it with hot water and create a large meal communally.
I don't know if I've ever heard someone speak so passionately about wetnaps before.
Justin Kroboth I love, LOVE moist towelettes, they feel so GLORIOUS upon my sweet ass.

Intriguing, but highly disturbing.
Breakfast
1) The first thing you opened is "Rice porridge" branded "Slastyona" ("Sweet tooth").
2) Minced sausage has a warning "Better to eat cooled".
3) There are no "brains" in those "brains paste". They are "Meat paste" (red package) and "Liver paste" (brownish package).
4) Chocolate is branded "Officer's" (adjective).
5) "Crackers" branded "Army's" (yes, we like to use adjectives as brand names) are actually "galety" - french "gallets" aka "pilot bread", "ship bread", "hardtacks".
5) "Maiskiy" (adjective from month name "May") tea is a commonly available middle-to-low class item.
Lunch
1) Nutbar is branded "Charge" and is made of prunes, apricots and nuts.
2) This brand of processed cheese is a commonly available item.
Dinner
1) "Beef porridge" is "Pearl barley porridge with beef".
2) Two leftover bags are "Rice stew with meat" and "Wheat porridge with meat".

that moment when spetznaz emergency rations is better food than what you have on a day to day basis
It has way more calories though. MRE food isn't meant to be an everyday diet.
Combat diets are more demanding than an average persons day to day requirements.
+dondoes969 yeah because the calories provide energy for troops to use in situations

from my experience they will be chock full of sodium and calories, two things that arent bad when you sweat all day and eat a meal or two max, but if you had that a few days in a row... say goodbye to your bowels.

That pearl barley porridge(you did not liked) actually was one of the main food in Soviet Army. Everybody hate it)) And we gave it a lot of slang names like "shrapnel". But if it well cooked, it has nice taste and smooth texture, it is very cheap and healthy.
Some quotes: "Barley played an important role in ancient Greek culture as a staple bread-making grain as well as an important food for athletes, who attributed much of their strength to their barley-containing training diets.
Roman athletes continued this tradition of honoring barley for the strength that it gave them. Gladiators were known as hordearii, which means "eaters of barley."
I'm not sure if this kind of discourse is implied in modern army diet in Russia, but young privates still eat it a lot.

if your strip gets lost or wet, it can be a livesaver.
Green is strike anywhere, red are water resistant.
Green is for when capitalist pig shows up and ration must be turned into firebomb
Would have made sense if the MRE was 25 years old or more. Since then however, if they want to fight capitalist pigs they'd have to start with the Kremlin itself. Russia's pretty much laissez-faire capitalist these days, business rules all and the creme de la creme entrepreneurs are king, it's capitalist to an extent that makes most of Europe (and the EU as a whole) look communist in comparison.
There's something so comforting about the way he says "let's get this out onto a tray. Nice."
Russian MREs are my favourite!! They seem to have more food than other rations, and such a variety of food. I love how many pates and spreads they contain.
It would make sense to have more food than most, 90% of the time they operate in artic conditions
They are probably issued one per day vs the 3000 calorie ones the US forces get 3x a day.
I actually fall asleep to Steve most nights because he’s so calming.

This man would have his mind blown by a four star restaurant.
CALEBMAESTRO tru dat 😂😂😂
Idk you expect good food going to restaurants its a real surprise when something taste good coming out of a MRE
"Waiter, please tell the chef that the hiss was really nice"
While the Michelin review is the premiere restaurant review service, it is not the only one that people use. And some of those others go higher than three stars. So, yes, there are four-star restaurants, Miklo Velka.
"this wouldn't even last 20 years in storage, get it out of my sight"
This came up in my feed, watched the whole thing and was not disappointed.
Thanks for being you man! Appreciate ya!
I think this guy lives on MREs. Eating MREs for years through. It's crazy how he has not gone insane yet.
TheNuuthei he's already insane, kinda, he's a functional psychopath
TheNuuthei that's how he gets so buff mres are the key to the gains
TheNuuthei Does mre's make people insane ?
I've just eaten US MRE #24 and I think I could live on MREs if they were not that expensive in my country
sure beats ramen packets
The green head is any-strike so you can strike it against anything.
The red head can only light on the striking strip
Why aren't they all any-strike? My guess would have been for picking short straws :P
There is no difference, i cheked, believe me. These matches work in bad weather, resistant to both wind and rain. But these matches are from Russia and they all can only light on the striking strip)
QuasiELVIS
It would be dangerous if all of them were green matches. The green ones are more sensitive and light up easier. The red ones are more stable and need to come in contact with the phosphorous in the strike pad to ignite.
You dont light the matches in russia they light you
the green head matchstick is the last one you use. kinda superstitious type of thing...
Wow that makes me so hungry!!! It looks not only delicious but Fun!!! Awesome dude!!!
This guy is a living legend, the enthusiasm during the SS chocolate ration was golden RUclips.
The sounds in these videos are so fucking satisfying to me, I feel like I'm at a full state of relaxation and happiness.
ASMR. :)
the crinkling of the packages sounds amazing lol
Lol chill out
You should try watching asmr videos

Wish they gave students these in school, I'd actually stay around during lunch rather than leaving.
Sagrotan my school chow is fucking amazing, even my old school had some decent chow, you could get a decent meal out of them if you knew how to season them
When I was in school I hated the food. Today I wish I had that food for free once a day. It was actually really good considering the small amount of money that was spent per plate.
Growing up rather poor, I was always grateful for school lunches. But I have to agree that the food we received back then was much tastier than what's handed out in school cafeterias currently.
Kalle Äger xD lmfao my schools food was shit and overpriced, 5 bucks for 1 small sandwhich
I very much enjoyed school lunches where I grew up. It wasn't weird food that was questionable like some rations or school lunches I've seen pictures of. I knew what I was eating and it broke up all the damn casseroles my mom made everyday. Idk what happened after all the damn food restrictions but before that my lunch was a highlight.
love your work Steve Great channel mate
