The French take their food very seriously. The best ration I ever ate was a French ration that was beef and potatoes. There were bits of fat still on the beef, the rabbit pâté was rich and delicious, and I wish I could go to a store and get the “Campaign Biscuits” that came with it. I’ve eaten food at restaurants that wasn’t as good as that ration was.
I'm looking at this stuff, and pretty much every single one of these items would the sort of thing that wouldn't be sold for less than $10 apiece in some high-end food store down here in Aus. (Probably at some place calling itself a "providore").

Perhaps, that's why they lose so easily in actual wars because they lack the strength to sustain themselves in actual combat. Love that the French do this for their guys. It cant be easy being in the field on a major holiday and this hopefully helps raise morale and gives the guys something to smile about.
This is by FAR the best MRE I have ever seen on this channel. Wooden utensils, great coffee, great drink, even wine! That rissotto looks so creamy and good, you can sell it in restaurant. These cheese snacks looks so tasty ... omg. The only thing is that I miss some crackers/slices to go with the salmon paté.
Definitively agree, but the wooden utensils thing isn't something fancy. The EU has banned plastic utensils in recent years, you can't get plastic cutlery or straws almost anywhere in Europe. Wooden cutlery has replaced them and it sucks beacuse it gives a woody flavour to everything and they break if you actually have to cut something. And let's not even talk about the paper straws that dissolve after 1 minute in the drink.
Back in the early 90's I had a source to get self-heating hot chocolate cups. They were meant for skiers so they could have a warming hot chocolate while up in the French Alps. The chocolate inside was really thick & rich - almost a custard consistency. I always kept a couple of cases on hand, one in my normal car in the "Stuck in the Snow" emergency box & the other in my work Land Rover as you were often out in freezing cold conditions during the day. Wish I could remember who made them as they were delicious. You could really hear the reverence in your voice about how good that ration was, thanks for sharing. Off road, on your driveway/garage, in bits & leaking oil. Still love them to bits (or whilst they're in bits) though, had many good memories in all of mine.

Seems a lot of folk have tried over the years, like Heinz with their self heat soup tins (heated by a lit fuse!) in the 1940's, to modern day Caffe2Go & +42⁰ coffee, soups & chocolate. Can't find pictures of the specific brand I had, but been an interesting read on the trials & failures of companies trying the idea. Cheers for encouraging me to look again.

It is basically dehydrated pea soup, pressed into a roll shape (like a sausage), rolled in wax paper. The production was discontinued in 2020 or so (unfortunately)
This reminds me of the food they served on flights when I traveled through France. Even in regular seating, you would get an amazing meal and as much wine as you want. They really know how their stuff over there.

Tapenade is widely available in the US as well, but it’s more a luxury-type food that one would not expect to see in a field ration. It’s very good, though!
I had lunch with the officers of the French contingent when I was in Somalia. They definitely take their food seriously. The commanding general's directive about no alcohol in theater, not so much. Was a nice afternoon.

If anyone is curious about the espresso I found the product online(you can buy from them they even have self cooling ones) this is from their site "Pressing the part indicated on the package, inside one of the compartments breaks a layer of aluminum that causes an exothermic reaction, controlled and natural. This is caused by the contact between the calcium oxide and the water contained in the sachet. This reaction generates heat which is then transferred, by means of tinplate, to the beverage contained in the other compartment. Started the EXOTHERMIC reaction, the temperature will vary within 3 minutes of about 30 ºC compared to the room temperature and will be able to maintain the heat throughout the coffee break." Pretty cool! I didn't really see any other product doing that.

Stationed at an HQ in former Yugoslavia in '93 where the ze French had their staff company. We had an endless supply of French rations. It was pure luxury.

I used to enjoy eating mres and had had a few American ones (I was introduced to it by you) but was diagnosed with Celiac disease about half a year ago. While I can’t eat MREs anymore, I can sure as hell enjoy these videos.

From what I've read, the US usually makes fresh-cooked food during holidays (like thanksgiving or Christmas). And yes, the food reaches as far as the frontlines (there was an infamous story during WWII, IIRC it was battle of Hurtgen Forest where soldiers died bringing food). So yeah, their logistics are built just like that
I'm sure we did at one point, probably not anymore because something something offensive blah blah marginalized communities. We're not allowed to have our own culture anymore thanks to lunatics.
Couldn't put the bottle of wine in there, too many of your soldiers are kids below the age where they can drink. Though to be fair to the US, that's mainly due to the fact your age to drink is absurdly high, every army recruits kids.

They almost certainly had fresh bread as well. No French meal exists without bread, hence the tapenade and the salmon pate.

I used to enjoy eating mres and had had a few American ones (I was introduced to it by you) but was diagnosed with Celiac disease about half a year ago. While I can’t eat MREs anymore, I can sure as hell enjoy these videos.

From what I've read, the US usually makes fresh-cooked food during holidays (like thanksgiving or Christmas). And yes, the food reaches as far as the frontlines (there was an infamous story during WWII, IIRC it was battle of Hurtgen Forest where soldiers died bringing food). So yeah, their logistics are built just like that
I'm sure we did at one point, probably not anymore because something something offensive blah blah marginalized communities.
We're not allowed to have our own culture anymore thanks to lunatics.
Couldn't put the bottle of wine in there, too many of your soldiers are kids below the age where they can drink. Though to be fair to the US, that's mainly due to the fact your age to drink is absurdly high, every army recruits kids.
