The French take their food very seriously. The best ration I ever ate was a French ration that was beef and potatoes. There were bits of fat still on the beef, the rabbit pâté was rich and delicious, and I wish I could go to a store and get the “Campaign Biscuits” that came with it. I’ve eaten food at restaurants that wasn’t as good as that ration was.

Definitively agree, but the wooden utensils thing isn't something fancy. The EU has banned plastic utensils in recent years, you can't get plastic cutlery or straws almost anywhere in Europe. Wooden cutlery has replaced them and it sucks beacuse it gives a woody flavour to everything and they break if you actually have to cut something. And let's not even talk about the paper straws that dissolve after 1 minute in the drink.

Back in the early 90's I had a source to get self-heating hot chocolate cups. They were meant for skiers so they could have a warming hot chocolate while up in the French Alps. The chocolate inside was really thick & rich - almost a custard consistency. I always kept a couple of cases on hand, one in my normal car in the "Stuck in the Snow" emergency box & the other in my work Land Rover as you were often out in freezing cold conditions during the day. Wish I could remember who made them as they were delicious.
You could really hear the reverence in your voice about how good that ration was, thanks for sharing.

If anyone is curious about the espresso I found the product online(you can buy from them they even have self cooling ones) this is from their site
"Pressing the part indicated on the package, inside one of the compartments breaks a layer of aluminum that causes an exothermic reaction, controlled and natural. This is caused by the contact between the calcium oxide and the water contained in the sachet. This reaction generates heat which is then transferred, by means of tinplate, to the beverage contained in the other compartment.
Started the EXOTHERMIC reaction, the temperature will vary within 3 minutes of about 30 ºC compared to the room temperature and will be able to maintain the heat throughout the coffee break." Pretty cool! I didn't really see any other product doing that.

From what I've read, the US usually makes fresh-cooked food during holidays (like thanksgiving or Christmas). And yes, the food reaches as far as the frontlines (there was an infamous story during WWII, IIRC it was battle of Hurtgen Forest where soldiers died bringing food). So yeah, their logistics are built just like that

Couldn't put the bottle of wine in there, too many of your soldiers are kids below the age where they can drink. Though to be fair to the US, that's mainly due to the fact your age to drink is absurdly high, every army recruits kids.
