2021 British Single Meal Ration Pork Sausage Casserole MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat SMR Tasting Test

- The SMR is the UK equivalence to the US MRE, and this British comfort food classic Pork Sausage Casserole is quite possibly the best menu out of the 10 currently in service. With 1,500 calories, a roaring flameless ration heater that's easily twice as powerful as an MRE's, and rugged components that are palatable and nutritious, this is truly one of the most well made military rations in the world.

Steve’s Son: “dad why is my sister named rose?
Steve: “ because your mommy loves roses”.
Steve’s son: “oh ok thanks dad”
Steve: “no problem coffee instant type 1”

As someone who has depended on rations for an extended period of time, I can tell you that the generosity with the tissue and nice big moist towelette are definitely appreciated by British service members serving in the field.
Here in the US when I was in the Army we called it John Wayne toilet paper
Nice!
@@garglemeceemen2991 I read that in Steve's voice.
Wow . Can't y'all just wipe your hands on your uniform or something like any civilized soldier would?
@@WiIdbiII I'm not talking about food or dirt here. And when one has gone six weeks without a shower, believe me, a generous supply of relatively large wet naps come in handy.
Look I know we love steve but can we take the time to just appreciate tray. He really holds the show together.
Nice!
Front and center in almost every video, but never hogs the scene or asks for special credit. Just doing it's job with no complaints.
What a humble tray.
His name is A. Tray. You must be new around here.
Yeah, tray!👏👏👭👬👏... that's a standing ovation!!!😅
My son recently adopted a cat and we named him Biscuits Brown, due to his color and biscuit making. We're big fans, Steve.

When you go at him with the can opener does he give you a nice hiss?
You win all the internet points today
That's a pretty huge compliment, Steve.
A testament to British hospitality that even in the field you're given a choice between tea or coffee.
The tea is for drinking, the coffee is for trading with americans

I'll never not recall the story of the Yank UAV team that were attached to us in Iraq. They were given a 25hr Rat pack each, but, being used to single meal MRE's, both scoffed the whole lot in one go. It was both hilarious and impressive that they could eat it all in one sitting.
We Americans don't believe in recommended portion sizes.
If you doubt this check out various Europeans going to American restaurants. They leave barely being able to walk. We're planning what's for dinner.
i always love steve’s videos for not just the content and his commentary/analysis, but the stories of veterans like you! i can only imagine y’all’s reactions to finding out the americans ate their entire days worth of food at one time
Admittedly, we are big eaters. :)
Murica 🇺🇲🦅✊🏻
Now thats peak efficiency right there haha. Did they happen to eat anything else the rest the day?
Could only imagine what that did to their GI tract
Brilliantly designed ration. You can tell that it is made to be comfort food and to remind a soldier of home. You can see yourself eating/drinking any of that while reading the paper at the kitchen table. Making me hungry just seeing it. If it weren't bedtime, I'd go have some biscuits and jam with coffee right now. Great review 10/10.
you brits eat jam on biscuits ?
its 4 in the morning you also go to bed late 😁
Depends on the biscuit, and how indulgent we're feeling.
You probably wouldn't put jam on a bourbon (although... Might try that tonight), but strawberry jam on a custard cream or a dark chocolate hobnob? Get in. 😂
What's a paper bruv
Those biscuits are for clogging you up. Hated them with a passion. The boil in the bag stuff wasn't bad. My favourite was the rolled oats with chocolate powder added or the giant oat biscuit.(aka a giant hobnob)
@@keysersoze3427I've never heard of a biscuit being callled a hobnob. Interesting

😂😂
Biscuits brown is back in town - deffo t-shirt slogan

Gettin down, with biscuits brown.
This is what I like most about Steve. He just uploads at random. Nothing weekly, or monthly. Sometimes I wonder what happened when he's away for a while.
But the most important of all, is he does every video with calmness, clearness, no cuss/swearing, no asking for subscribers or to like his videos, etc... He just does a review, gives an honest opinion, and let's his audience decide whether to like, comment or subscribe. Unlike many RUclipsrs who think they have to ask, beg, plead, in each video. Sometimes 2, 3, or more times. It gets old.
he lets his content speak for itself and it really is a refreshing change of pace from a lot of content creators. he does it out of passion and it shows.
It’s just really great to watch a guy who loves his MREs . It’s pure, it’s authentic and just fun to watch.
Thats why i keep coming back after all these years. I even check in regularly when Steve's on hiatus just in case he may have unloaded
The episode where he smokes a cigarette from the WW1 are still makes me chuckle to think about
I'm always completely blown away by the heating things...
I know it sounds weird but seeing that pouch with food inside heating up on its own is always something amazing to me...I guess I'm still a kid who gets amazed by simple things like these...
Better than being totally jaded I guess 😄😄
I've once read it's basically the components of a battery mixed together. And adding water to it is like short-circuiting said battery. If you've seen a Lithium battery go wild, you'll understand exactly how this type of heater works.
hot steam will burn ya tho if your that dumb! lol so many just opt to eat it cold. everything is time management on a march.

Hey right on Paul! nice
My partner and I in the UK are in the unfortunate situation of needing to use a food cooperative, like a food bank you pay a contribution to. These pieces of gum show up every week! Packs of nuts with fruit, some amazing little ginger biscuits/cookies, and a few other items in the same line of packaging appear every now and then. Strange seeing them in the hands of Steve, and knowing for once how some of it tastes. Great work as always, thank you!

I don't know if this in your wheelhouse, but with your experience and knowledge of MRE's I'd love to see you either tour a place that makes them or interview someone responsible for making them.

When they say "single meal" its actually enough to last 12 hours, British rations are 2 main meals and a hearty mid day marching snack/brew so id say thats a great ration for someone yomping or hiking for a few hours. Great vid as always
Yes, the technical definition of the word “ration“ means enough food for one man for one day.
@@davidgold5961 not true, ration means a fixed amount of a commodity

Big TY steve ! Your work somehow brings joy to my day. No other reviewer can do it like you. ;)
UK rations are really cheap and easy to get online, so many of the components in these and the 24hr packs are great for camping/hiking like the wipes, matches, purification tablets as well as the food items. Not a fan of the 3 in 1 hot drinks myself, but that's personal choice, I always stock up on the old sachets of Rombouts coffee if I can find them! Yes, I am the one Brit who doesn't like tea!
Cheap?
You must be getting yours off the back of an army lorry.
@@oldbatwit5102 ebay mostly, around £15 in general for a 24hr pack.

Bacon grill was the best we had in our compo ...squaddies know what I'm talking about 😊
@@markthompson8733 I mean cheap compared to the alternatives, a single MRE or Real Turmat meal is at the very least the same price, probably more, so being able to get 3 meals plus snacks, drinks etc is a good deal IMO. Only use them for day trips or overnighters though, too heavy for multi-day trips. Even 3 Wayfarer pouch meals is probably £15, and that's just the mains.

They are to much like Jim Bakkers whole prepper deal and everyone knows to stay as far away from that as humanly possible. 😂
Mountain house is the best
I think the problem is you have to buy those in bulk so it'd be a huge waste of food. Most of them are the same as (possibly even from the same OEM) single meal camping rations though and there are youtube channels that review those.
I've tried a bunch of these as my folks bought a few containers of the 4patriots stuff. The meals are much like what you'd find in the camping section, and aside from the main dishes, it's mostly dried fruits and nuts in my experience. I haven't eaten a modern MRE but I'd bet they're tastier than most of the prepper stuff.
