Congratulations buddy!
Oh my God, he's finally back! WE MISSED YOU STEVE!!

i didn’t even realize it’s been a year!! it’s so nice to see him back :)
So glad he’s back!
Steve is the greatest. He doesn't upload frequently. He doesn't beg for likes or subscribers. But not only does he show an actiual _passion_ and taste for MREs but he discusses actual science and nutritional facts and only uploads when he has something to say.And just actual _scientific_ information about carbs and calaroies, and even weight and such. Not just for the hell of it, nothing for regular views, or begging for subscribers, just pure _quality_ - Steve is just fantastic.
You made such a _point_ .
Well written, with points I agree with completely.. only part is one cannot fully trust the science, if the one who uses such science is of a corrupted nature...
AGREED! He has so much knowledge, and has obviously applied it (look at his build!).
The sheer quality makes his videos pretty much infinitely rewatchable.
If anything he does the most to promote other RUclipsrs and MRE enthusiasts
As a prior service man, I brought how some old school MREs to home and fed some to my grandfather. He was a former marine that saw very heavy combat in WWII. As he ate, he began to weep because of how good it was and remembered how it was in the 40’s. We talked about our service and he told me how hungry and thirst they were at times. He told me that if they would have had those back then, things would have been so much easier. We have no idea how good we have it.
Agree
Thank you both for your service.
I can only imagine how that shared moment between you and your gramps felt
@@ar-sithf.austin3744 They really are deserving of "The Greatest Generation" title. As far as I know (not much), they largely tried their best to give their Baby Boomer children the prosperity they didn't have growing up.
I've read stories of Greatest Generation houses being cleaned after their passing, with cash squirreled away here and there, under beds, behind pictures, in walls. A very resourceful, frugal, and practical generation of Americans. We should try our best to learn from them while they're still in the memory of our living parents and grandparents, as they've unfortunately largely passed on by now.
@@ar-sithf.austin3744 Modern US soldiers are bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter than all previous generations of US servicemen. Todays generation would wipe the floor with "the greatest generation" in a combat scenario.
I bet the food scientists who design these meals are grateful that there is a person like this who is so earnest and expressive in their appreciation of the effort and ingenuity which went into the food's production.

Love how Steve devours an entire ration that's designed to basically keep a person in need running for a full day and casually notes that it's 'rather filling' 😂

I used to love his videos, even made some MREs with commercial items based on how he reviewed certain items. But i stopped watching for a time. MREs were out of my budget.
Well now i'm back and i have 28 MREs from 3 countries and looking at a way to get MRE cheese and oatmeal cookies in bulk to my country!
I really appreciate the explanation of why certain ingredients or components are included for a ration with this purpose. It's everything I want in a food review, but also with some nutrition and science education.

I have a case of these for emergency food. Those calories and carbs enough to tide you over for a whole day with a little supplementing on the side. I believe that smoothie could be used as baby food, when used as a humanitarian food package that might have been the intent. I must say it is very tasty! While this not slated as survival food for me it will be on my camping trip or weekend boating menu.

The thing I appreciate most about Steve's content is his unbridled passion for all aspects that come together to make a MRE or ration. The culinary experience, food science, packaging, use-cases, etc. It's what I find most interesting about such items; the effort to maximize utility. And Steve really seems to understand and appreciate that aspect.
The thing I like about Steve is that he brings real knowledge to his review. Unlike a lot of reviewers, Steve genuinely knows what he’s talkikg about. I’ve seen other reviewers that will say things like, “hmmm… what’s this? Eeew, I don’t like it!” One reviewer even thought that the Esbit stove fuel tablets were food. One had an older ration that included cigarettes and refused to light one of them. Steve will smoke that bad boy. I’m not even a cigarette smoker (I do enjoy the occasional cigar) but I love to see him try out the antique cigarettes.
@@cinedelasestrellas He’s not perfect. Some of his Survival kit reviews… let’s just say he could use some training in the use of various components… a stupid example that comes to mind was he didn’t know about the IR chemical light (he thought was defective) or the IR finger light (which he thought had dead batteries) in one of the newest USAF pilot survival/medical modules. But to his credit he corrected the video with subtitles and left them as they were filmed (if my memory serves me correctly). He is one of my favorite RUclips people because he is “expert level” when it comes to rations and his passion (from what I see and hear) has gotten him into survival kits (which is something I’ve dumped alot of time and effort into the history and designs of military and civilian kits) my passion. He also is authentic and has a “hook”. Great style. When you say… “let’s get this out onto a tray… NICE” I’ve heard numerous people say that. You can tell he really has great interest in the content he is creating. I used to work at a State Veterans Home and there was nothing the old guys liked more than watching the MRE videos. It was a universal hit. With everybody.
I'm actually surprised how much about physiology Steve knows. Ghrelin hormones for hunger etc.
PLUS... Steve is just a cool dude. Now let's get this out on a tray!
Agreed. Steve's knowledge and his delivery of it - I swear I would never have considered what actually goes into the design of food rations. You get a real education on this channel.
The first ration was so health-provoking, it made him grow more facial hair!
So glad to see you back, Steve. You are the Bob Ross of MREs...and on behalf of all your followers, thank you for doing what you do.

Steve, your descriptions of MRE's are better than almost any actual food critic's. If you run out of military rations to critique, you could always move to actual restaurants. The world would thank you-
As long as there are emergencies, disasters, and conflict in this world, there will be a need for MREs. I don't think he's going to run out of MREs to review any time soon.
The one thing that's really missing to make this a truly universal meal is some sort of ready to eat baby-formula. Basically, milk that doesn't have to be diluted with water. Something for very small babies (3mo or younger.)
the smoothie would probably do the trick for a wee bit in a pinch, I would imagine
Not to argue, or rain on your parade, but I don't think that is a good idea. It can kill babies.
In the (70's?) Nestle heavily marketed their baby formula in South America, but the problem was that they didn't have much clean water to make it with. Once a mother stops breastfeeding, she can no longer produce breast milk naturally, ending up with a bunch of babies in South America that couldn't be fed. Resulting in at least a 27% increase in infant deaths in those countries.
War Zones and the likes are not reliable enough (imo) to safely provide adequate water to everyone.
Realistically? The BEST nutrition for an infant is giving the breastfeeding mother priority on food. And commercial infant formula is already the cutting edge for nutrition. (Aka - still inferior to breastfeeding)
And "replacing" the milk with formula for as little as three days will dry up the mother's supply. Thus forcing the family on expensive formula until the baby is weaned.
@@HeatherDoe That smothie is pretty much flavored sugar paste.
@@kin2naruto That assumes the mother is alive, not sick, etc.
Steve coming back like an old friend. 🥺
He stays the same wonderful man, i grow older everyday.
Ha ha! "Dazed and Confused"! Wooderson...
I love how you examine this ration from the viewpoint of what it was designed to do - be a shelf stable source of calories for starving people, and as many as possible. I also really liked how you told people this really isn't something you want to hoard or stash if you live somewhere you have options. This ration truly was designed for a very specific reason, and isn't the right ration to use for long term food storage.
Canned food, dehydrated food and salted meats/fish are all great options to look up if you want to learn about that sort of thing seriously, I've been looking at historical recipes myself from Townsends or Max Miller. They both go into how to make hard tack as an example so you can make your own long term preserved food with varying quality, can't forget pickling as well.
@@lethn2929 salted and honey are also good food preservation techniques of old. Some of these methods are used in some recipes shown by Townsend too.
The interesting part about these humanitarian rations is they really put into consideration of accommodating other cultures/religions and dietary restrictions. It’s Muslim/Jewish/Hindu friendly and also people that have allergies or even just vegan/vegetarian.
Man I don’t know- seems like a great thing to stash IMO. Hell of a lot easier to bust out than dehydrated food if there was a real emergency
I bought a few of them and I’m slowly working my way through them because I agree with what you were saying. They’re not that awesome compared to a real MRE.

STEVE, you’re alive! I was so afraid an expired MRE had finally taken you out.
Or maybe he simply has a life outside of producing content on RUclips...
Your sensitivity to the reasons people will be eating these rations is very kind, on point, and much appreciated - especially including a statement about a disappointing component being the reason why these rations are available on the retail market. That made me, as a relative newcomer to these MRE-related channels, feel much better about watching it (because it would not have gone to someone in need out in the field). And I find your content massively educational. Thank you!
The stuff he gets is almost never destined to someone who needs it and is useally surplus or sent to resale :)
@@lastwymsi Thank you. That is *very* good to know. Until I watched the HDR video, it never dawned on me to wonder how the various rations got to general retail outlets. I still wonder about international rations…are they surplus? or does some enterprising clerk have a side hustle?
@@debgeisler4568 They're almost definitely just surplus so I wouldn't worry about it, if anything these MRE collectors are doing governments a favour by not letting food go to waste. There could potentially be some weird black market activity, but seems unlikely, there isn't that much money to be made from these rations other than as collector items or people just doing it for fun. Now weapons and military equipment on the other hand, that's a whole other story.
@@debgeisler4568 to be honest in the foreign and domestic front I would expect either of those options are probably as common as the other one
There may be people selling stuff inappropriately. But it is very normal for militaries to need to update or otherwise replace their outdated equipment and supplies. Rations specifically will have a much shorter storage life than most things, so I think it is very normal to find a steady supply of slightly older rations reaching the civilian market. This is actually good because it allows some cost recovery for what would otherwise be wasted. Of course, it would be better to avoid over producing in the first place, but some amount of over production is required to avoid under production, which would be worse.
Hey Steve! Thank God you are back!!!! I've missed watching your vids and you eating rations! I was concerned you had either retired or passed away. I'm sooooo glad you are back! I hope you post a ton more videos. One day I'm gonna try a ration myself. Take care man, hope you are doing well :)
I think it is incredible how smart you are, about all the aspects of foods. I can't wait to see where you go in life Steve. ✌️😁
Back in 2021 we had hurricane Ida hit us pretty hard. So a lot of people got MREs here and for some reason people really hate the things here, so I ended up with quite a lot because nobody wanted the things after the hurricane had passed and the cleanup was pretty well done. I'd bring them to work and eat them for lunch because it was quick and easy and there was enough variety in menus to where it didn't get too old. Well one of my coworkers said oh yeah I have 10 cases of MREs you can have I'll drop them off for you and it ended up being one case of the brown military rations and then nine cases of these humanitarian rations. Needless to say not being in an emergency situation I got burntout on humanitarian rations very quickly
Lived on these for a while after Hurricane Ian. Had some canned goods stored, but the gov't was giving them to anyone they could. Was working disaster relief/cleanup and these things were tasty and calorie dense, I had at least 2 packs a day and felt like I was running on home-cooked food. The sweet-potato/grape smoothie was actually amazing if you could cool it down, great desert and energy boost. Only complaint would be lack of an FRH.
Great review as always, thanks for the content!
Considering the use of this ration a FRH makes less sense because in a environmental disaster situation you have easier accesses to fire and the retort pouch means you can heat/boil this ration in muddy/salty non drinkable water as well. One of those small easy to light fuel tablets with a couple of matches would maybe be better.
It's great to learn about MRE's of the world, thanks Steve.
I appreciate the attention to detail you include while sharing knowledge. Keep it up!
I like that you explain the reasoning behind why this or that is in the MRE. (like, the food that would be easy to ingest by elderly, or halal/kosher considerations, etc). I wouldn't have stopped to consider it so I'm glad you pointed it out. Even pointing out the detail that the packaging is quite visible. Your videos are exceptional.

The man, the myth, the MRE machine. He’s back. 🎉

I'm genuinely glad that the MRE supply chain is being used not only to help the boys overseas but also to distribute effective, lasting aid options. This MRE looks solid, and one I'd love to take on a long hike - if it didn't need to be sent to a struggling nation/people elsewhere!
I keep 2 in my backpacking pack (havent actually gone backpacking yet lol) I will say I tried menu #4 and the food is actually not bad. the chemical taste from MRE's taste similar to the same chemical taste from a hershey bar so if you can withstand that the foods pretty solid! Lot better hot then cold though thats for sure
I had an Indian spiced dish with yogurt and raisins for lunch today. But when it came out they weren't just raisins, they were golden raisins. Sultanas, if you will.
I thought of Steve and said, "Nice" to myself. And now there's this.
Holy smackers 2 Million subs. Have not been here for a long time due to circumstances, but back and now very glad to see the high quality vids Steve puts out are still here. Glad to see he is still here and thriving.!
Omg I took a little break and it looks like you did too according to the comments, and this was sooo nice and chill per usual! The "Let's get this out on the tray" was a great shot of nostaligia!
Well, looks like we all kept checking regularly to see when he would post something. Hoping he was alright, then the moment came now. Isn't it strange how one can care so much about someone they have never met and have so much admiration for? Glad you are back man. Keep them coming at your own pace.
From what I have seen for many months now is that countless people adore your content to the point where they ask eatchother on here (or other forums) about your well-being. I hope that means something to you because it is a hell of a thing.
People can do other things without being ill.
@@garymitchell5899 Really? Thank you for your searing insight.
@@garymitchell5899 he could at least keep people informed. He is like a good friend
@@GodWeenSatan He's under no obligation to keep people informed. Believe it or not, RUclipsr's actually have a life beyond the content they produce.
@garymitchell5899 The fanbase is getting kind of weird and cringe the bigger it gets. Pretty sure Steve would do this even if no one watched. The large volume of people contantly assuming you have food poisoning or died must get old when you upload schedule is like his.
I think the smoothies and the jam are a very smart item to add to these. You're right that a lot of people who get these might be sick and can't even eat solid food. It could get them back to health if they went through some kind of natural disaster.
iirc these hdrs were made to have components that are suitable to be eaten by infants (eg soft food like smoothies and jam)
I always love and enjoy your videos Steve!
Hey Steve, thanks for the video. Thorough enjoyment all throughout it. I like your voice.
Nice.
The bit about the elderly being able to live off the calories in the shakes/seed butter/jelly is totally true. My grandmother survived on sipping a little Ensure in a care facility for way longer than we thought. If you are not moving much, you can subsist on very few calories!
Overall the HDR's look really well thought out and quite tasty too. Even if it is not your favorite food items, in a disaster situation any kind of meal is a big deal.
I've been living off of Ensures, Boosts, Sunbutter, and Multivitamins for months now. I wanna try to add in some sorta jelly or jam.
Sounds kinda horrid in terms of your grandma's well-being though. A care facility or a survival facility?
This was the idea behind the development of peanut butter.
@@RyuakiraX sounds like palliative care anyways, don't overthink it.
@@RyuakiraX She was at the point where she was unable to eat solid food for safety reasons. I visited often and they took very good care of her, it is just the natural progression of being elderly.
