    Non board game related comment, sorry: Hi all, we are massive Taylor Swift fans, and were due to see her perform two nights in Vienna, which was cancelled due to a planned terrorist attack. There are only a few dates left on the tour in North America and second hand tickets cost thousands of dollars. If you, or anyone you know ends up having to sell their tickets, please consider directing them our way as it would mean the world to us. Happy to pay over face value! Sorry for the interruption to your board game content!

    When I first tried "Undaunted Normandy", my first thought was: "This is a clever little game".
    It's only gotten better since then. David Thompson has really made a game where which can re-introduce wargaming to the masses. Undaunted has completely replaced Memoir-44 as the goto game to play with my son.
    This is refreshing in a sea of low-player-interaction publications.

      Couldn't agree more. I also think it gets extra points for being scenario based, so you can pick a short, snappy game or an epic encounter based on mood. That, and the fact you can swap sides and play all the scenarios again...but different.

      Really amazing to hear, thank you so much for the kind words.
      Sadly the podcast is likely on hold for a while. We run this channel mainly to help people, so we don't have a patreon or aim to generate cash. It turned out that unlike RUclips, podcasting cost a lot to do and we got a lot less listens than expected so it would cost us a lot of money to keep it up with no chance of recuperation through ads or something. Maybe in the future we will do a patreon or something and use that to do the podcast, as we really enjoyed doing it.

      Thanks so much for the kind words! We really enjoyed the podcast and want to explore it more, but we're currently having to evaluate it. It ended up costing a decent amount of money for the hosting site/editing software per month, and we got a lot less listens than we expected based on our 6.5K subscribers here.
      Maybe in the future if we do a Patreon we'll use that money to offer the Podcast, or look into alternate free/cheaper options.

    I like the style of your reviews. Concise and informative. In your opinion, does it make sense to dive into this Undaunted series if I am a totally solo player. Thanks!

    • @BoardOfItReviews
      @BoardOfItReviews  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, that's what we try to be! Well, you can only play solo if you buy Reinforcements & Normandy or North Africa (or both), so you do have a little up front cost there. However, I did try out the solo for the video and was really impressed by how it works and how tense it felt. That said, I only dabble in solo so I don't have the greatest reference library to compare.

    Thanks for the review. I have Normandy and will probably get the others. Love that the campaign do not tell you to destroy the game. I watched in horror back in 2011~2012 as companies found a way to make board games disposable, and the community though it was a great idea. After 10 years I still find "legacy" games grotesque and insulting, and are the only games I refuse to play (let alone buy)

      I get what you mean, it is such a shame to just throw out all those components, although we have tried legacy games from time to time. However, this format of replayability is much superior. Glad the review helped!

      @BoardOfItReviews  Год назад +3

      Glad to hear it helped! We have indeed, but Spirit Island is one of those games we really enjoy, but haven't played in dog's years. I think it doesn't help it is cooperative, which we don't play too much.
      That said, Spirit Island is a terrific idea for this series, thanks for the suggestion! We hadn't considered it but it's such a perfect fit. If it's something you'd like to see (and to anyone else reading) please reach out to marketing@greaterthangames.com to say that you love our Buyer's Guides and would like to see one for Spirit Island and hopefully they will see the support and want to work with us :).
      As a fun update, I can tell you our next Buyer's Guide will be for Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition as the publisher just sent us all the expansions.

    Glad you liked BoB I found it a blast, you pay for mistakes, initiative is more critical than ever and the constantly shifting battlefield really makes you think about your deck (bombing the moving ships with slow, clunky bombers... stressful in a good way).

    I have played Undaunted: North Africa and in general I like the system.
    I have not played Undaunted: Normandy, but based on the rule book I've noticed the following: all the tokens and cards are symmetric. The asymmetry is determined by (a) which cards are in your starting decks and supplies; and (b) the shape of the scenario tiles and starting locations.
    This means you can easily design your own scenarios which are 100% guaranteed to be balanced: lay out the terrain tiles in a symmetric way, with symmetric starting locations. Give both players the same starting deck and supply. Randomly decide who starts with the initiative.
    This option is not available in Undaunted: North Africa, as the pieces are asymmetric. You cannot give both players the same starting decks or the same supplies. Or, if you can, your design space is _very_ limited.
    This is my analysis from first principles. I don't have any experience suggesting what the value and relevance is. I'd be curious to hear if anyone has designed their own scenarios for Normandy and anything else, respectively. Was the balance an issue? Was it more relaxing to design your own scenarios for Normandy, with balance worries out of the way?
    Of course, one expects the scenarios in the book to be reasonably balanced through extensive play testing. For one-off home designs, play testing resources are somewhat limited; hence there's a premium on inherent symmetry.
