  • This expensive Sureflap connect WiFi microchip catflap has a serious design flaw making it not fit for purpose. Our cats aren’t allowed out at night for fear of them not being spotted by motorists (one already got run over at night). We bought this 180 quid catflap and it worked well for a while. The curfew setting was great, you’d set it for sunset and sunrise. That was until our cat, badger, figured out all you needed to do was put one paw on the latch, use your claws to pull the door and you’re away! They’ve issued me a fix for this when I contacted them. This is STILL not sold as standard. Contact them for the fix if you want to buy this product.

Thank you very much for this movie! One of our cats was also able to escape this way after 3 years of studying. Contacted Sureflap and they sent me a thumbproof version. Up until now it works great. Guess it will take our cat an other set of years before she figures out a new way to escape.

We have taken on a stray and we had kept him in for a week. We knew there was an issue with the cat flap so we locked it, covered it in suitcases, blankets held down the blanks with weights and he still got out the day he was meant to be neutered. None of our other cats have ever been this clever.

Gizmo is a long and interesting story. He had no registered owner, wasn't neutered or tagged and was seriously ill. In the end we got him treated at great cost , tagged him and colared him with a phone number. Got a call from a cat lady with 10 cats who loved them but couldn't really afford to look after them. She was happy for us to adopt him but he had other plans. We found out he has 3 homes and loves living in them all. All open cat flats. Still pops around to see us but he belongs to no one@@stephenwalls9277

I have the microchip catflap (not Wifi). Both my cats figured out very quickly how to get in or out whichever way the lock was set. When one cat was in I set the catflap to in-only to get the other one in but the cat already in just put his paw on the latch and pulled the flap inwards with his paw and out he went.😲 My handyman fitted pieces of wood either side of the catflap and a board that slots down into them. That's the only way to keep them both in at night.🐈‍⬛🌠

Badger was hit and killed by a car yesterday on a quiet residential street with a 20mph limit. Who knows if the car was speeding but virtually no one respects 20mph. Please please please be careful on these roads, there could be a cat hiding under any parked car and they can run out at any second. We all owe it to our furry companions to slow down. Their lives depend on it.

Have the same problem, had the door for three years to 'in only' and suddenly the cat cracked it in the exact same way. No response from the manufacturer. I'm going to try some home-brew modifications so that a cat can't get a paw in against that gasket, particularly on the corner. What this doesn't show is that if the cat is chipped, the door will 'click' and the lock drops from the INSIDE, so it's that much easier to lift with a paw and climb out. My cat can now do it in seconds.

It’s a little plastic cap that goes over the internal latch so they can’t step on it and release the door. They supply you with a new door which has this latch cover attached to it. It does work really well and I’ve had no trouble since fitting it. People on here have said they’ve struggled to get Sureflap to send them one so make sure you explain your cat has been doing what my badger has been doing. And be detailed about it!

This seems like a waste of money. If these were my cats, I would rather save my money for other cat flaps that cats can NEVER defeat. I might have to be a cat flap designer, myself, in order to make things impossible for cats to escape from and smart cats like these would have me thinking outside the box for this.

I almost didn't buy the flap because of this video. Instead, I wrote to the manufacturer and asked what they could say about the issue. The manufacturer then offered to send me a separate flap with extra protection, free of charge, directly with the order. This worked without any problems and there is no possibility for a cat to open the flap.
So before damaging the reputation of a company or badmouthing its product, it would be appropriate to communicate with the company first and ask them for support.

You know what mate, before assuming I’ve undermined the credibility of an ethically upstanding and superb corporation ask yourself this, if they knew there was a problem (which they obviously did because they’ve produced a ‘fix’ for it, why are they still selling a defective product?? Why is it up to the customer to figure it out and ask for an upgrade?? It’s too late when your cat has escaped and been killed on the road isn’t it! Have a think and use your brain before you open your big mouth. This video is up because I don’t want anyones beloved pet to end up dead because it’s escaped at night. The corporation should have issued a full product recall!!!

@@therealcaptaininflatable This design defect is dependent on the cleverness and persistence of the cat ...most probably don't have this issue and to do a recall or send out a replacement door to everyone who bought or will buy would amount to a great expense ...I understand why they wouldn't do this and if they have a fix I am confident that whenever they do a new manufacturing run it will have the upgraded doors or a double inner latch. I don't know what the change is they made to replacement flap ...but seems simple to me. add a little plastic "cup" over over the latching mechanism so the cat can't step on it. If need be I will be making this mod myself. The one issue I see with this company so far is they don't have the upgraded flap available for purchase ...I am assuming it's because they don't want to draw attn to this flaw.
I just bought one of these (could not find any other app controlled microchip catflaps with in&out privilege control) and this problem does concern me greatly because of the area I live and one of my cats is a persistent tuxedo like yours ...I wrote the company last night (mentioned I couldn't find the upgraded flap at their website) and am waiting on a response. I thank you for making this video ...and am thankful Fabian responded letting us know they have a solution.

@@earthhalienn1799 thanks for your thoughts. basically, they know there is a serious design flaw and they’re not fixing it because it’s expensive. Companies throughout history have done this and caused harm to a great many people. If this was a product for a child they would be forced to make the recall. But they persist with a substandard product because it’s only someone’s cat so who cares, let’s just keep the money. They know there is a problem, they should issue a recall or at the very least utilise their mailing list to inform every customer who bought one online that there is a problem and they have a fix. Not doing this would be criminal if we were talking about, say, a baby’s cot. It’s poor form in my opinion. If you get a response regarding why they haven’t advertised the upgrade on their website please post it here! To be fair to them, before I posted this video they sent me a new door with the plastic latch cover you describe. I’ll post a short vid of it in action for the sake of balance. I was just so annoyed that they haven’t done this for every flap they produce. It’s been years they’ve known about this from what I can see online.

    • @earthhalienn1799
      @earthhalienn1799 Год назад +1

@@therealcaptaininflatable I think part of the issue for some companies like this is they do a huge manufacturing run and sell the units from that one run for several years before needing to restock. I have no idea how recent it was since they started producing the improved doors ...but like I said I think the redesigned flap will be part of their next production run ...and what they have now may be a very limited supply of those doors, possibly from a small test run to make sure the product is to spec before doing a large one. They may not have enough to offer them for sale on their website or include them bundled with new units ...so they only give them out upon request or complaints? I suspect their stock may be running low since the hubs required for this door is out of stock everywhere ...and I wouldn't be surprised if sourcing components is problematic due to the current geopolitical/economic environment.
...and you are totally right it is bad form ...but since this isn't an issue involving harm to a human it does not rise to the same level of concern for a company ...and the problem does not directly harm the animal and they are not at risk of being sued over it. Ultimately it is a design failure for a small percentage of cat owners.
I think most people would probably be aware of this issue before harm comes to their pet and concerned enough to contact the company and/or stop using it.
My tuxedo gets very anxious at 5am ...and this time of year is bad for coyotes and they do come into the neighborhood some nights and a few months back a new neighbor down the street lost a cat to a coyote when they let it out early in the morning before going to work like they did every day for almost a year. So it is a very real concern for me ...but I am not going to let that happen. Even if I wasn't aware of the problem ahead of time and a cat got out too early a couple times chances are low something bad would happen ...but that's not a chance I am willing to take.
...we really have no idea on the statistics of how many cats have learned to defeat this door ...and they may just be waiting till they have a stock of the improved flaps before publicly acknowledging this issue ...to admit the problem on their website prematurely would tank their sales if they weren't ready to roll out the solution to everyone and possibly result in the end of that product line ...and they may never really openly admit it? Instead just fix in the new version... with a mention of the design improvement in the product description.
I know it sounds like I am making excuses for this company ...but I have some understanding the position a problem like this puts them in. I think this is a good product ...and as with many products they need refining before getting it just right. I could find nothing comparable to the features this one has ...features I need if I going to feel secure leaving them outside when I am staying out late.
