This is me. I have an outdoor cat (former stray who adopted me) who’s become 90% indoor 10% outdoor. But my boy cats bully her so she has her own room. I’m looking at microchip doors for her and my other female cat who gets bullied at the litter box by the boys so they can go in and out that room as they want into another room. And then another door going outside just for my one cat cat who is allowed outside. The sureflap is what I’m considering getting so I wanted to see the opinions here.

So happy this video reappeared. I was excited to see it then it was taken down. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on indoor/outdoor, but sometimes the door could lead to a catio, or a secured, fenced garden, or even into a garage that has been set up as an extra playroom, so this will certainly be useful to a wide range of people for various purposes.

For anyone that does not believe a cat can manipulate the latch on a cat door: I had a cat that learned how to turn on a space heater, two that can open doors and one that would turn on the computer monitor and stomp on the keyboard.
My advice would be to not let them see you use the latch but even a highly intelligent cat will figure it out. Know your cat.

My cat could get into or out of the house by turning a knob! She also would knock on the windows of only my sisters room to be let in if she didn’t return home before my dad locked the door. This was before we were educated on letting them roam free.

There is another cat door well worth mentioning.
For Texas extreme weather, plus mosquitoes, we got from Amazon "PERFECT PET Multi-Flex Pet Door".
No gaps, has a manual shutter, sturdy.
Cat is comfortable: she can watch what is outside without being watched, and even use it as an ambush.
The rubber strips between slates may eventually wear out, but the whole thing is inexpensive, and, I guess, possible to replace them with something. We have it one year, so far no signs of wear.

  • @knothead35

Cat doors don't always mean letting them outside. My cat door leads to a screened in porch. A porch that's really high off the ground. I have the catmate. My big ginger cat likes to do zoomies and run as fast as possible through the door. So much so, that he broke the door and it had a big crack in it. I couldn't buy just the door part separately, so I had to order a new complete door and just use the door part.
I'm looking into the sureflap for a cat who has issues with using a litter box that others have used. So, maybe pop nutting her own litter robot in a bathroom that only she can get into. I love the sureflap feeders and the warranty is awesome

Perfect timing! I need to replace my cat door to the catio. I had Cat Mate in the previous home catio and it is superior to the PetMate door which I bought this last time and it is failing and leaks air in winter. And the PetMate door is prone to freezing shut as it leaks so much air. I had to buy a plexiglass window and use a pillow between the window and plexiglass to insulate the window and to keep the cats safe inside when - 20. Also the locking system is poorly designed and easy for my cats to pick the locks. With both I had custom windows made and the original windows can be replaced when I sell my house.
The interior cat door is just a cut out in the dry wall and trim the same as the baseboard. It is to allow them to the basement litter box. No accidents from closing the door to the basement. On the rare occasions I have to shut them into the basement I have another smaller plexiglass piece that I also use Velcro to attach to the wall.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  2 года назад

Hm, I don't believe this type of door would be the best option for you. You'll have to be there to set up each cat in the system, so unless you're there and watching as the cats go through the door, there's no way you could program it. I think you could manage it by putting food on one side of the door and standing by to program, but if they're not comfortable enough with your presence, another door may be the best option.

@@AllAboutCatsYT No worries sweetheart, the reason I was watching videos about cat doors is because my cat likes to live the way she wants to live and she expects me to comply without hesitation at 5 am. She has things to do and people to see, she's a busy gal. She has more friends and knows more people than I do by far. I live in a small community bordered by lake Huron on one side and creeks at each end and a highway to the rear that she stays well clear of, she loves it here, it's a kitty's paradise. She needs her own door though, she drives me nuts every morning. I changed my vote to thumbs up. Thanks for the reply.

My female cat is pretty timid (or dumb) and will balk if presented with any type of flap or barrier. Case in point, if my bedroom door is partially ajar, with only 1/2 inch of an opening, she will give a half-hearted push, then give up and walk away. lol. Therefore, cat flaps are not for everyone! Also, all my cats are indoor-only cats. My cat door will be for the large walk-in closet where their litterboxes are kept.

The Purrfect Portal Meow Manor door is not available. This would have been perfect for keeping my cats in the basement-where their litterboxes are-when repairmen, etc come to the house and I can just close the door so they can't get out of the basement, especially if there's lots of going in and out of the house, as my cats are indoor only. Currently, I have the cathole cat door, and I can't close it up for scenarios as described above. 😔

TIP: For the microchip sensor cat flap. Make sure to mount it on a surface that DO NOT have metal.
My "Sure Flap" assembled on a door with an internal metal reinforcement, never allowed to detect the cats (plural) chips. Obliging me to use it a a normal (way cheaper) cat flap.
So mount it on a proper surface or buy a much cheaper and save the money for cat treats! ;-)

I have cat doors inside. Best for Aircon and keeping heat in a room AND not getting out of bed every 2 minutes when you have 3 cats. EDIT they are indoor cats.

The bigger problem is letting the raccoons into the house. They and their little hands don't care about locks.
I have one of those sliding glass door models. The single pane glass freezes up in winter and a frozen waterfall if ice blocks the door. I had to insulate it with styrofoam. And then the other side of the sliding door isn't sealed very well and allow in drafts and bugs. I had to seal all that off with duck tape. I'm looking to replace that mess with an in-wall style.

SureFlap is the best catflap with microchip support, but it's nowhere near perfect. The antenna is looking ahead but the chip is on the left side of the cat. We have three cats: Sensei, Steven and Daisy. Sensei's chip is working always properly. When Steven's trying he has sometimes succes. Daisy's chip doesn't work. Every chip are working when I checked by a RFID ISO 11784/11785 reader. Collar chip is working fine. I dissasembled the cat flap and I used like an RFID reader and every test was o.k. Solution: I have to rotate the antenna. How????? Um.
(I ordered an RFID 134.2 kHz antenna and I will try that.)

All my cats were or are strays. They are not indoor animals. I consider keeping cats indoors to be animal abuse. I'm here because my cats like to hang in my small shop. But they cant get in or out if I leave and have to lock the door.

George, it sounds like you're the appropriate audience for this video-most of our subscribers seem to have indoor cats, and this video probably wouldn't resonate with them as much. I hope you got something of value from it.

@@AllAboutCatsYT yea, though all my cats are outdoors cats I do take care of them. So I do get beds and other amenities. But they have the outdoors so no need to entertain them. I was looking at putting a door in my shop door so I could lock the shop up. But I think I will just cut a hole in the door. They will figure it out as they are nosey as all getout ! But yea, I welcome new ideas so thanks. Now to go out and feed about 12 cats. They get noisy if I go beyond their internal clocks.

I don't understand the appeal of the portal door. You still have to get up and bend over to open or close a tiny door, when the big door is already closed or can be opened. Why not just open or close the existing large door?

Can someone please help me my cats are going and pooping in the neighbor's garden and it's to the point where I'm going to have to move if this doesn't stop because they're going to get my cats impounded. I live in a 600 square foot house so please please I beg you do not tell me to keep them inside that is cruel

You may be able to keep your cats in your yard by installing a special cat fence like this: www.purrfectfence.com/
Also, I would encourage you to let go of some of your resistance to keeping your cats inside. Many cats do live happily inside of homes no larger than yours. Especially if you can put your kitties into harnesses and take them out supervised, I think they can lead a perfectly happy existence while spending most of it inside.

Perhaps you could build a catio and a run for them. So they can be outside, but not hop over to the neighbors.
I have indoor/outdoor cats as well, and they don't like to be locked inside all day. But if it's a question of you having to leave your home, then a catio may be your only option.

Which cat door do you suggest for this type of door ibb.co/YyNnHLP ?

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  3 года назад

Any type of cat door should be compatible; for aesthetic reasons and to get a good seal, you may have to position it above the panel around the edge/bottom, but that seems like an appropriate height for a cat anyway. You'll want the bottom of the door's opening to be about in line with your cat's belly. I'm assuming that it's a steel door, but it's up to you to know your door and make sure that you have the appropriate equipment when you cut through it. Hope this helps.

I personally think it is healthy for both pets and people to get some clean fresh air sneaking in through the cat door! Imagine the poor cat that has to put up with smokers!

00:55 WTF?!?! Cats NEED to go outside. I wouldn't get one that cannot, and absolutely would not get a cat unless I had outdoor space. Where I live, there are dozens of cats. No bother whatsoever.
