1963 was about the time I began watching "The Wizard of Oz" as an annual ritual. Back then color TVs were somewhat rare in my neighborhood, and I was grown before I realized most of the movie is in color. Thank god for RUclips for making these performances available. Unfortunately, it puts many of today's performers and artists to shame and forces the question, "What the heck happened to this country?"
So true. So glad I was born in the early fifties. My parents made a point of introducing us to all the classic movies and great music of their day from the twenties through WWII. Judy was the best though. No one could top her. We always had a radio on. Born and raised in New Orleans we were surrounded by constant music and dancing.
Every song writer knew Judy would sing their songs they way songs should be sung.Irving Berlin Sold the songs in Easter Parade to MGM for a fortune back in 1948 just so Judy Garland would sing his Songs. Berlin is quoted as saying that "No" one can sings his songs better than Judy Garland. Easter Parade was just on TV. PBS aired the movie. The song "Better luck next time" has always moved me.The song was filmed upclose & she lipped synced the playback perfectly. It looked like she sang it live.
She was ACTUALLY singing, not lip-synching. She always sang along with the playback, that's why she always looked as though she was actually singing. Because she was. Mr. Berlin was asked if he would write a story (book) with songs. He agreed to under one condition, IT MUST STAR JUDY OR NO DEAL. That's when he said that no one sang his songs as good as she does. The studio jumped all over it, hence the movie Easter Parade. Personally, Fred was a marvelous dancer but, way to old for her, and looked it. 23 years I believe and looked much older than that. But, it is a great film. And Judy did kick Freds hinny in the Couple of Swells number. Not his style, but, it sure is her style. As Judy once said, that's all.
@Jayee123 I agree, Judy @ MGM from 1941-50 was amazing. In Ziegfeld Girl & Babes on B'Way, MGM started glamourizing her especially in Lily Mars. My favorite Years that I really liked was during the TV series. The 50's /early 60's her voice was amazing. She looked great in mid 1963. Judy really looked her best during the episode when Liza Minnelli was her guest. I just heard that there was a certain style Judy sang in while @ MGM. In "ASIB"Judy style matured & U can tell the difference..
@Jayee123 Judy didnt want to sing in the MGM Style when she left Metro because they her singing too youthful for her age and She said she didnt want to sing in the MGM style when she did A Star Is Born because she was a grown woman now.. Until I heard that I didnt realize that MGM had Judy singing in a different style. I can totally see the difference in styles.
Nobody walks on a stage like this legend! She IS talent! The Greatest!
You said it! Judy's the greatest!
So talented!!😂
Just about any song placed in the care of Judy, you had a class act. This one I believe is a pure example!

@@terrygrant3467 I think they were a great pair. Love the movie.
i love her so much…
best of the best !!!
Superb! and well shooting. By the way, Anita O'Day and Karen Carpenter have very good versions of this.
Whether or not this was a truly live performance, her frenetic style really captures it. That “Baby, you got my love“ is one of my favorite passages.
