      +Yuvi Singh - Father-son dynamics are inherently clichéd. Jeremy's ending would be good.

      Disagree. First of all it can be argued that a military upbringing would make a salute just as, if not more meaningful than a hug.
      But secondly I never got the father-son conflict vibe from the film. There were lots of scenes where Will showed obvious care for his son, like when the ship was about to crash he stood by his son and calmed him down and helped him stop hyperventilating. The conflict to me was about Will not respecting his son as a warrior and thinking he was weak.
      Still a trash movie.

    I'll never understand Will Smith's decision to have his character be an emotionless robot when he knows damn well he is famous for his charm and charisma.
    My only theory is that he tried to avoid outshining his own son; after all this movie only exists because of Will's insistence to make his son a star.

    • @WhiteMagicEnygma
      @WhiteMagicEnygma 10 лет назад

      I don't see what you Off duty Accademy judges - no disrespect just a bit annoyed w/pickin on the kid like he's a black Bieber or an obvious bratt like many male child actors even the blonde Dennis the Menace from the 90's when rather than comic books specifically; they made a film about every child's show; cartoon or Not & when it was slow, they just made up a new one (3 Ninjas that admitted on the box that the characters were all original,,,..,they just scalped & "film skin-grafted" the basic idea if TMNT & Home Alone! That was the Promotion! I loved it bc I love Martial Arts & Idefinately picked up on that in the film; the ninja'ing & teen antics were your Turtle material including a pizza scene which of course was used for other things than "merely eating" naturally lol! And the defense from kidnapping in the beautiful upper-middle class nearly as big; suburbia house+setting as well as further antics & some of tee scape elements from they cell & working their way thru the ninja fortress was Home Alone & even a live kids-vid game elements. I mean as coincidence I would not count it as ripping off either movie. I woulda called 'convenient inspiration' were it not for the home vid box confession lol & here's why. Had there been teen or even Under late 30 age Mutants or official ninja Super hero by Job especially each w/ANY specific ninja weapon. Hecc or even if it were katanas but they say wore them crisis cross on they back like Leo; a specific Turtle, I'd have called foul &shameless copy&Bite of the Heroes in a half Shell - hey I didn't name them, like Batman & Robin's aka is the Caped Crusaders - hecc Nolan even used the aka of course singular in his greatest Film TDK! Ok, lastly has it been Only ONE kid ninja, spoiled & either a Longer home defense scene - bc here's what lets face it, the one in the film is a relatively small part in the film as released! Either make it longer with only Tum-Tum in the picture Or simply have the robbers break in on TWI different occasion during the 2nd then Third Act. Bc IF You've seen the film friend & possible other readers to my ramble, forgive me Superchunk, btw what does Ur handle/name mean, rep? So had the break in scene been split to cover more film or simply lengthen w/Only Tum-Tum turning that crib into a fun house of blood lol! Not necessarily blood, it's a joke of Christian Bales from Harsh Times (if U like Bale, that short doohde Freddy Rodriguez & U enjoyed Training Day & say Street Kings; I call that genre; Cops/Crooked-Cops/&Gangstas! I devote Half a shellf to it on my bottom DVD shelf below horror. Also in mine are; American Gangster, Brooklyn's Finest, Notorious (tho TH@s closer to my music bios stuff too, occupying the other half of that shelf; music & gangster Docus, usually 1&the Same as w/Tupac Ressurection. But if U specifically like even 3 of te films I named &/or been meaning to see them Udefinately should! If not for Christian, Freddy, their dark & light buddy-comedy that rarely gets too goofy. I mean the rob a drug dealer & nearly get shit in the cross fires of some 1 else's shoot out Bith scenes steerage but te same morning *+ Both will have You Rollin! Eva Longoria is in there when she was all Desperate House wives Young Hollywood fresh mmmmh! Lastly TRUST tat film is NO comedy; again think Juice or Training Day NOT Friday. Last 2 bonus news ONE the film will roller coaster You through the rainbow like complete Rangeof emotions by the end, it'll be tough at times Who of All the characters to root 4 & put Your Chios behind & Y bc they all have great points! Christian & Freddie Are best friends but they have different & even opposing views at times the have another clse friend he's a goof at first but he becomes Real serious & gets behind a strong point to where Mike may ave to make a tough choice! Freddie & Eva have something going on but Bale gets in the middle maybe by no fault of hi ps own so a choice as to be ade by Everyone in TBE epic climax & that's BE4 crao hits the fan! The final bonus is IT Is here on RUclips BUT in PARTS, no straight okay thru ast I checked But All the Oarts are there! Look at it this way A U can take Ur time watching it. And if some odd reason it's not for You it's mad easy to quit, no patch required! Tho I think You'll know by my words & even a trailer IF needed before You ever click on Harsh Times Part 1. I hope gelpedYou & maybe another viewer

    I actually liked the ending of this movie because one of its themes was growing up, one particular aspect of growing up being that it sucks. in the beginning of the movie you see Will Smith say to his wife "I want to work with you" while at the same time being really hard on his son. he wants to dissuade him from being a soldier because it sucks and unless you're perfect, you won't come out of it without getting hurt. when the son finally does it, overcoming the odds to be exactly like his father, his father does what he always swore to do if his son went through with it and became the soldier his father was and saluted him. The son however, now understanding what's it's like being his dad decides that it sucks and wants to just hug him and do normal kid stuff.

    2001: a space odyssey is the best sci-fi movie IMO. There's an undertone of mystery yet there's also a sense of discovery, everything just feels so new and the technology still doesn't seem dated despite coming out 47 years ago. It could possibly go down as one of the greatest movie endings simply because of how ambiguous it is . Hell it even predicted things about the future and got some of them right. It's just amazing

    **SPOILER, I guess**
    I get the saluting. It was a callback to the beginning of the movie where that soldier thanked Will. Maybe not a typical father/son thing, but it works between them. It's probably more touching than him breaking down.

    • @eastlynburkholder3559
      @eastlynburkholder3559 4 года назад +1

      The saluting at the end is a call back to the first scene with saluting, the premise is interesting, the spaceship design is interesting and not so common to see, namely that the non structural parts of the ship look lightweight and flimsy and seem intentionally made that way to save on weight, and thus fuel. However. too many scenes feel the same, look the same, so what should be a character growing on both sides we really do not see happening and at the end we are shown that it did happen. Climax scene no matter how beautifully it cleverly filmed have to earned, and the are earned by the build up to the scene, which in this movie did not make the emotional payoff happen for the viewer.

      twilliam043 Dude! Your definition of sci-fi makes no sense when you consider the real definition of what sci-fi infers. Space opera is merely a SUB-GENRE of Sci-fi and Sci-fi is a sub-genre of fantasy. star wars is most obviously science FICTION. Does the word fiction have any meaning to you? what you are talking about is referred to as HARD sci-fi which is also just a sub-genre.

      Hunger Games IS NOT SCI FI, It's a modern teen dystopia drama, and it really hurts to say that. Dystopia books used to be soooo freaking amazing and eye-opening, Brave New World, 1984, FH451, Atlas Shrugged...now they've become backdrops to the new commonality of generic teen romance stories.

      How is it not Sci-fi? Sci-fi is an alternate, realistic world where technology is more advanced. The Hunger Games follows all of those criteria.

    two things. one did you notice how Shyamalan's name appears nowhere in the begining of the film. As if the film makers knew that it would repel people, or that his name showing at the end of the film was the "Twist" ending we've come to expect from him. And two How many of the scenarios in this film would have been solved by something as simple as *gasp* A FIREARM. Not in a pro guns politico sort of way I mean that in a futuristic galaxy on a military ship there was not a single firearm to be had anywhere. No phasers not even a gunpowder weapon. Some of my favorite Not star trek non star wars Sci Fi films include, Disney's "The Black Hole", Moon starring Sam rockwell, pich black, and the really long minisieries of Frank Herbets Dune.

    I really enjoyed this movie, the whole thing flowed for me. The movie is about a military hero and his aspiring son. The subtle emotional clues are what makes it, not breaks it. When he saluted his son in the end, and gave him a hug, It was meaningful. The salute is what his son needed. He didn't just want kisses and hugs from his father, he wants his respect and admiration, the salute symbolized that.

      Jordan Williams And it's still a sci-fi.
      A superhero film isn't a genre, it just means it was adapted from a comic book. There are comic books that aren't about super heroes, hundreds of them, just as there is an incredible amount of films based on books, yet genres vary.
      An obvious example of a scifi that has different genres in it is Blade Runner: it's as much a film Noir as much as it is a sci-fi.

    I'll explain it to you. Bad movie though it may be, that scene made sense. It's explained that the animals on Earth are now super evolved. AND not all animals are stupid, like you seem to think.
    ALSO, the salute WAS GROWTH. Jayden wanted to be a good soldier to make his father proud. FATHER, not commanding officer. And the salute was Will Smith showing Jayden how proud he was.

    Oh, my favorite sci-fi film that wasn't one of the majors has to be "Dark City", a nice little Valentine to all the old German Expressionist films of the 1920s and 1930s and a vital missing link to "The Matrix" (both films even used the same sets). You're never quite sure what's going on but you're also never bored either.

    This kind of reminds of an episode of Deep Space Nine.
    Quark and Odo (who can't shapeshift at the time) crash land on a random planet. Their emergency transmitter got damaged in the crash, so they have to carry it to a mountain. The whole episode is completely carried by the chemistry between the characters.

    • @Metalalbumreviewers
      @Metalalbumreviewers 9 лет назад +3

      Not a huge fan of DS9, personally, but that episode is one of my absolute favorites of any Star Trek series, hands down.
      Funny that a much older tv show did this exact same concept better than a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, all because the writers realized that quirkiness, dialogue, and genuine conflict work better onscreen than attempting to make the main character turn into an emotionless badass seeking his detached father's approval.
      Star Trek has always been a shining example that character development and sacrificing temporary "cool" for conflict and creativity are the cornerstones to good visual entertainment.

    • @eastlynburkholder3559
      @eastlynburkholder3559 4 года назад

      I saw that episode. Although After Earth is cosmetically better, I would rewatch the Odo Quazrk episode before I would rewatch After Earth. The main problem is the same as if the whole movie was filmed in an over the top yelling at each other between the characters style. The main problem is that Will 's character is acting dispassionately and the kid actor is controlling his fear and this one set up never changes much. Only the background and exact wording changes which is sort if the reverse of older budget cartoons where the backgrounds were simplified and very repetitive and just there and will and Jaden's characters are just there.. And so they are talking back and forth and more of the same and more of the same and so the emotional tone of each scene being almost completely the same does not serve the premise well.

    The crazy thing is that I believe this is a good movie that’s prevented from being one by one singular element, Will and Jaden Smith being stoic solider type characters, like imagine if this was the same movie except Will and Jaden gave performances more like something out of say Will Smith’s performance from I Am Legend, where it’s still serious but it’s filled with more heart and emotion, and also have them look at each other and father and son rather than as fellow soldiers, I can guarantee this entire movie would be 10x more engaging had their characters been portrayed like that rather than how they are here

    Jaden Smith wanted validation from his father, the real conflict was guilt it wasnt so much about father son bonding, Jaden felt like he was a coward because he thought his father saw him as a coward, the salute at the end is the closure to that conflict, his father is proud of him for overcoming fear. Yes in the beginning it shows they're distant but that wasn't the focus of the movie, I think the fact that they are real life father and son maybe portrays it that way to some, though.
