Disagree. First of all it can be argued that a military upbringing would make a salute just as, if not more meaningful than a hug. But secondly I never got the father-son conflict vibe from the film. There were lots of scenes where Will showed obvious care for his son, like when the ship was about to crash he stood by his son and calmed him down and helped him stop hyperventilating. The conflict to me was about Will not respecting his son as a warrior and thinking he was weak. Still a trash movie.
I'll never understand Will Smith's decision to have his character be an emotionless robot when he knows damn well he is famous for his charm and charisma. My only theory is that he tried to avoid outshining his own son; after all this movie only exists because of Will's insistence to make his son a star.

The most ignored spoiler warning ever hahahaha. Fuck this movie. Will Smith is trying to share his fame with his family and it resulted in this bullshit
The whole Ursa thing was really stupid, they didn't have to be fearless, they just had to be in a glass bubble and Ursa wouldn't smell them. A modern military would wipe those things out easily, yet a 1000 years in the future humans fight with stupid staff/sword thingies instead of guns. WTF... P.S. why was almost everything made from bones and cloth in the future? that was weird to me.
Those were the only things wrong with the movie. That and the stupid dialect they made everyone speak in. It made dialogue hard to understand and caused everyone's acting to seem worse.
I actually liked the ending of this movie because one of its themes was growing up, one particular aspect of growing up being that it sucks. in the beginning of the movie you see Will Smith say to his wife "I want to work with you" while at the same time being really hard on his son. he wants to dissuade him from being a soldier because it sucks and unless you're perfect, you won't come out of it without getting hurt. when the son finally does it, overcoming the odds to be exactly like his father, his father does what he always swore to do if his son went through with it and became the soldier his father was and saluted him. The son however, now understanding what's it's like being his dad decides that it sucks and wants to just hug him and do normal kid stuff.
after earth did blow me away like i thought it would, but i did enjoy the movie. have to agree on the ending though with the whole solider and father thing. should have been switched
I like the way Jeremy interpreted the way he thought it shouldve ended, even though it was only slightly different it brought a thousand time better moral. Jeremy your a movie genius.
2001: a space odyssey is the best sci-fi movie IMO. There's an undertone of mystery yet there's also a sense of discovery, everything just feels so new and the technology still doesn't seem dated despite coming out 47 years ago. It could possibly go down as one of the greatest movie endings simply because of how ambiguous it is . Hell it even predicted things about the future and got some of them right. It's just amazing
**SPOILER, I guess** I get the saluting. It was a callback to the beginning of the movie where that soldier thanked Will. Maybe not a typical father/son thing, but it works between them. It's probably more touching than him breaking down.
The saluting at the end is a call back to the first scene with saluting, the premise is interesting, the spaceship design is interesting and not so common to see, namely that the non structural parts of the ship look lightweight and flimsy and seem intentionally made that way to save on weight, and thus fuel. However. too many scenes feel the same, look the same, so what should be a character growing on both sides we really do not see happening and at the end we are shown that it did happen. Climax scene no matter how beautifully it cleverly filmed have to earned, and the are earned by the build up to the scene, which in this movie did not make the emotional payoff happen for the viewer.
I actually like the movie, and at 2:26, my thought of that scene was that the bird predator thought that he was his baby bird and wanted him back at the nest.
The only real actor in this movie doesn't have enough screen time and when he was in there his character is an emotionless soldier. Also you have his kid running around learning how to act... Sounds fun? :/
I do not now how you can watch this movie and give it a tougher time than Airbender. Maybe it's because I love the show so much, but Airbender was beyond Dogshit for me. One of my least favorite movies of all time. I would prefer Star Wars Episode 1, the Jar Jar tales than what Night did to Airbender.
+SpeedDemon1152 exactly. Nothing can ruin the wonder and amazingly awesome series that was Avatar, but the movie is so bad that it is probably my least favorite movie of all time because of how much wrong it did to the source material.
Yep, this movie sucked. Will Smith, what were you thinking?!!!!!!! I saw it on the Carnival Sensation in my cabin and I was this close to falling asleep.
twilliam043 Dude! Your definition of sci-fi makes no sense when you consider the real definition of what sci-fi infers. Space opera is merely a SUB-GENRE of Sci-fi and Sci-fi is a sub-genre of fantasy. star wars is most obviously science FICTION. Does the word fiction have any meaning to you? what you are talking about is referred to as HARD sci-fi which is also just a sub-genre.
Thank you Jeremy for understanding. It is mostly because of the director and the script that made Jaden act bland in this film and not just Jaden himself. I KNOW that Jaden has some talent in acting, he just didn't use them in this.
SVXShadowgaming Technically sci-fi is realistic fiction minus the science factor. Hunger Games is realistic and takes place in the future which has advanced tech like cross species genetics.
Hunger Games IS NOT SCI FI, It's a modern teen dystopia drama, and it really hurts to say that. Dystopia books used to be soooo freaking amazing and eye-opening, Brave New World, 1984, FH451, Atlas Shrugged...now they've become backdrops to the new commonality of generic teen romance stories.
I think that last scene meant that will Smith respects him as a soldier. But when the sun hugs him it means he was saying,"I don't want u to see me as a soldier. I want u to see me as your son.".
two things. one did you notice how Shyamalan's name appears nowhere in the begining of the film. As if the film makers knew that it would repel people, or that his name showing at the end of the film was the "Twist" ending we've come to expect from him. And two How many of the scenarios in this film would have been solved by something as simple as *gasp* A FIREARM. Not in a pro guns politico sort of way I mean that in a futuristic galaxy on a military ship there was not a single firearm to be had anywhere. No phasers not even a gunpowder weapon. Some of my favorite Not star trek non star wars Sci Fi films include, Disney's "The Black Hole", Moon starring Sam rockwell, pich black, and the really long minisieries of Frank Herbets Dune.
Ya when i found out he made this movie in the cradits. (Because no cover art or at the beginning of the movie) i stood up in the theater and laughed uncontrollably for 10 minutes
But HOW can so many of you say the acting was good??? What do you mean?? The lines from the script read by the actors? Because that was horrible. What are you basing your views on? Or is english not a langauge you speak and the movie you saw where dubbed?? I don´t get it.
I really enjoyed this movie, the whole thing flowed for me. The movie is about a military hero and his aspiring son. The subtle emotional clues are what makes it, not breaks it. When he saluted his son in the end, and gave him a hug, It was meaningful. The salute is what his son needed. He didn't just want kisses and hugs from his father, he wants his respect and admiration, the salute symbolized that.
Jordan Williams And it's still a sci-fi. A superhero film isn't a genre, it just means it was adapted from a comic book. There are comic books that aren't about super heroes, hundreds of them, just as there is an incredible amount of films based on books, yet genres vary. An obvious example of a scifi that has different genres in it is Blade Runner: it's as much a film Noir as much as it is a sci-fi.
i know what a genre is i have done media for the past 4 years its just i didnt word it correctly i suppose and im just saying i wouldnt associate the film with sci-fi if you know what i mean :)
I Love Will Smith he’s 1 of my Favorite Actors, my Favorites Of his are Bad Boys 1 & 2, Men In Black 1 & 3, Enemy Of The State, Wild Wild West, I Robot, I Am Legend, Hancock, & Suicide Squad 2016
Shawn Taylor Sally thought he was bringing Julia in, that's why it didn't shoot. There are other things in this movie that are real bullshit, but bc the movie as a whole is so great, i can just suspend my disbelief.
actually before mass effect these holographic bracelets were used in anime The Spirits Within. It's not well known and in my opinion it's underrated, so it's rarely remembered.
If Chris Stuckmann loves it, it's okay... But sadly his "analized" video of Signs didn't resolve the problems I had with it. His attempt to defend the water thing didn't work and he could't find a way to explain why the fuck the aliens couldn't open or break down a fucking door.
2001 : A Space Odyssey is not only the best sci fi movie but the best movie of ALL TIME. Its incredibly ambitious and yet pulls it off. Also HAL is a great villain, the stargate sequence is mindblowing, the use of classical music is really good etc....
sonicjrjr14 woot? I liked watching the action sequences of pacific rim, the story however was terrible! that Love thingy between mister cool guy and miss asia just felt really forced.
I just saw this movie for the first time today, and I have to admit, even though I had a few issues with it here and there, it wasn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. I was decent popcorn flick.
Context brother. Context. Does a gay guy saying faggot hurt himself all the time? Cos i know alot of gays that use the word faggot. If that s the case should we also not use any words that have any negative connotation. "fruit", "banana", "dog" have all got negative connotations in different countries and cultures. So do we have to stop using all those words? I suggest u watch some george carlin
Adam Ophir blah blah these words have a negative connotation siiiick bro u know what they actually have a funny connotation to me but the denotation is whats negative. stop trying to sound smart cuz u know what u reallt sound like? " YOU SOUND LIKE A BITCH'
I'll explain it to you. Bad movie though it may be, that scene made sense. It's explained that the animals on Earth are now super evolved. AND not all animals are stupid, like you seem to think. ALSO, the salute WAS GROWTH. Jayden wanted to be a good soldier to make his father proud. FATHER, not commanding officer. And the salute was Will Smith showing Jayden how proud he was.
Oh, my favorite sci-fi film that wasn't one of the majors has to be "Dark City", a nice little Valentine to all the old German Expressionist films of the 1920s and 1930s and a vital missing link to "The Matrix" (both films even used the same sets). You're never quite sure what's going on but you're also never bored either.
This kind of reminds of an episode of Deep Space Nine. Quark and Odo (who can't shapeshift at the time) crash land on a random planet. Their emergency transmitter got damaged in the crash, so they have to carry it to a mountain. The whole episode is completely carried by the chemistry between the characters.
Not a huge fan of DS9, personally, but that episode is one of my absolute favorites of any Star Trek series, hands down. Funny that a much older tv show did this exact same concept better than a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, all because the writers realized that quirkiness, dialogue, and genuine conflict work better onscreen than attempting to make the main character turn into an emotionless badass seeking his detached father's approval. Star Trek has always been a shining example that character development and sacrificing temporary "cool" for conflict and creativity are the cornerstones to good visual entertainment.
I saw that episode. Although After Earth is cosmetically better, I would rewatch the Odo Quazrk episode before I would rewatch After Earth. The main problem is the same as if the whole movie was filmed in an over the top yelling at each other between the characters style. The main problem is that Will 's character is acting dispassionately and the kid actor is controlling his fear and this one set up never changes much. Only the background and exact wording changes which is sort if the reverse of older budget cartoons where the backgrounds were simplified and very repetitive and just there and will and Jaden's characters are just there.. And so they are talking back and forth and more of the same and more of the same and so the emotional tone of each scene being almost completely the same does not serve the premise well.
My favorite sci-fi movies besides Star Wars or Star Trek? They would have to be Inception, District 9, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Chronicle, Super 8, and Avatar. Just to name a few.
Literally, I saw the trailer to this and the first thing I said was, "I bet Shymalan wrote that." And then I vowed that I wouldn't see it. So I basically saved myself :P
The crazy thing is that I believe this is a good movie that’s prevented from being one by one singular element, Will and Jaden Smith being stoic solider type characters, like imagine if this was the same movie except Will and Jaden gave performances more like something out of say Will Smith’s performance from I Am Legend, where it’s still serious but it’s filled with more heart and emotion, and also have them look at each other and father and son rather than as fellow soldiers, I can guarantee this entire movie would be 10x more engaging had their characters been portrayed like that rather than how they are here
Favorite action Sci-fi movie would probably be Summer Wars for the great animation and themes. My favorite slow Sci-fi movie would have to be 2001: A Space Odyssey for the interesting themes and how much fun it is to pick apart and analyze.
Jaden Smith wanted validation from his father, the real conflict was guilt it wasnt so much about father son bonding, Jaden felt like he was a coward because he thought his father saw him as a coward, the salute at the end is the closure to that conflict, his father is proud of him for overcoming fear. Yes in the beginning it shows they're distant but that wasn't the focus of the movie, I think the fact that they are real life father and son maybe portrays it that way to some, though.
Actually like the story. The psychological aspect of it was extremely well done. The conflict of the sisters death. I get it. Yes jaden, needs more work but hey its a process. I dig it ;)
Although i do agree with you, the predator that "helped him" was trying to eat him but went to far out of the weather zone it was comfortable with and died on top of him from frost, if thats the part im thinking your thinking of
Just hit through watching this and it was amazing. I'm really glad to see a movie with a positive father and son relationship. Great movie from M. Night .
Maybe Will Smith had a tear in his eye because he was standing up with two broken legs, just saying.
TheRacoonasaurus thats what i was thinking exactly
Lmfao!
cackling at this at like 2am lmao
Anyone can feel love toward their child but not everyone can respect their child as a good soldier.
Fucking hell, Jeremy's version of the ending is way better than the real ending.
tbh Jeremy's ending feels clichéd.... but still better than whatever shamamlalayaman... did
+Yuvi Singh - Father-son dynamics are inherently clichéd. Jeremy's ending would be good.
Disagree. First of all it can be argued that a military upbringing would make a salute just as, if not more meaningful than a hug.
But secondly I never got the father-son conflict vibe from the film. There were lots of scenes where Will showed obvious care for his son, like when the ship was about to crash he stood by his son and calmed him down and helped him stop hyperventilating. shamylan straight up said he didnt want will smith to use his charm. i guess he doesn't know what makes will smith will smith
4:10 - 4:21 Dude... where were you when this movie's script was being written?? That actually would've been awesome!
the only survival in this movie is trying to watch it till the end

This movie only exists because Will Smith wants his son to be a movie star.

That's not really a difficult question: "What's the best sci-fi not called Star Wars or Star Trek?".
Alien of course.
Love Aliens but Alien is just a bit better imo. Both are 10/10 movies for me though.

I know someone probably said this already, but how was Signs a good movie?
No.
No, it wasn't.
It was a good movie
Heavily Augmented It's flawed, but it was nowhere near as bad as this piece of shit, The Last Airbender and The Happening.
I like the way Jeremy interpreted the way he thought it shouldve ended, even though it was only slightly different it brought a thousand time better moral. Jeremy your a movie genius.
this review does not make it sound like the worst movie of the year for you
2001: a space odyssey is the best sci-fi movie IMO.
If you are still not convinced that this movie sucks big time, watch YMS's video on After Earth
"hey food there you are!"
... hahahahaha
The Thing- both in a row. I thought I wouldn't like the prequel but ended up enjoying at least enough to consider it canon.
2001 A Space Odyssey, all the way.
**SPOILER, I guess**
I get the saluting.
Galaxy Quest was a great movie, RIP Alan Rickman. Also, in the realm of TV, a shout out to Babylon 5.
I actually like the movie, and at 2:26, my thought of that scene was that the bird predator thought that he was his baby bird and wanted him back at the nest.
Jaden Smith needs Quentin Tarantino.
Why?
His own father refused to star on Django Unchained - so I highly doubt he'll allow Jaden near Tarantino anytime soon...
Or Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg
Captain Jakemerica Any of these legendary directors!
***** Yeah shoot I think even Tim Burton could get a good performance out of him.
This movie left me confused,: WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU LEAVE PLANET EARTH!?
Then why the hell dump Earth?
Plus it wouldn't hurt to evolve too.
Ever seen Wall-E?
Maybe it got too polluted.
Nightbane How do you explain the wildlife?
Ichigo1423jfk Simple with no humanity to control their ancestors, evolution took hold.
I'd rather watch an entire film series showing hours of jar jar than seeing the last airbender
Remember when Jaden Smith was in The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid remake?
I'm just waiting for the top 10 best/worst movies of the year!!11
lol i came right here after watching his worst movies of the year.
Blade Runner is the greatest sci fi movie ever
Other than Star Wars of course.
Star Wars isn't sci fi. It's a space opera....a fantasy.
twilliam043 Dude! Your definition of sci-fi makes no sense when you consider the real definition of what sci-fi infers. Space opera is merely a SUB-GENRE of Sci-fi and Sci-fi is a sub-genre of fantasy. star wars is most obviously science FICTION. Does the word fiction have any meaning to you? what you are talking about is referred to as HARD sci-fi which is also just a sub-genre.
that was a great ending idea you gave there
'Enemy Mine', CLASSIC social/sci-fi. DENNIS QUAID WAS A KING!!!
Thank you Jeremy for understanding. It is mostly because of the director and the script that made Jaden act bland in this film and not just Jaden himself. I KNOW that Jaden has some talent in acting, he just didn't use them in this.
Hunger Games is definitely my favorite sci-fi.
SVXShadowgaming Technically sci-fi is realistic fiction minus the science factor. Hunger Games is realistic and takes place in the future which has advanced tech like cross species genetics.
SVXShadowgaming they had like mutant wolves in it and wall of controllable fire or something and fire dresses ITS SC-FI!!!!
SVXShadowgaming You must have never watched the hunger games. any one who has seen the hunger games knows that the hunger games is SCI-FI.
How is it not Sci-fi? Sci-fi is an alternate, realistic world where technology is more advanced. The Hunger Games follows all of those criteria.
i didnt like this movie, but i did almost cry when the bird sacrificed itself ;-;
I think that last scene meant that will Smith respects him as a soldier. But when the sun hugs him it means he was saying,"I don't want u to see me as a soldier. I want u to see me as your son.".
District 9.
I love your honesty Dude!
two things. one did you notice how Shyamalan's name appears nowhere in the begining of the film.
Favorite syfi movie not SW or ST? Guardians of the Galaxy.
Agreed. That movie was legendary
I really liked it but I wasn't blown away
In the description it should say melodramatic since the bast actor dies in the end R.I.P bird...
I really don't like M. Night Shymalan.
Believe me, no one does.
Ya when i found out he made this movie in the cradits. (Because no cover art or at the beginning of the movie) i stood up in the theater and laughed uncontrollably for 10 minutes
Chance Ondriezek No one, really? obviously not as he is still working. Go look at fan sites and see how NO BODY likes him.
***** i really do
Ian Legend Oh? Why?
My favorite classic and largely forgotten Sci-Fi film is "Altered States." Amazing.
But HOW can so many of you say the acting was good??? What do you mean?? The lines from the script read by the actors? Because that was horrible. What are you basing your views on? Or is english not a langauge you speak and the movie you saw where dubbed?? I don´t get it.
Probably the Matrix or Terminator.
K-PAX, Moon, District 9
This concept actually done masterfully, and my girlfriend: Chaos Walking
I thought it was a good movie.
Good for you, most didn't
Seriously. Me too! I love the film's brilliant narrative structure & natural pacing.
Terminator 2 is my favorite Sci Fi. Either that or Man of Steel.
man of steel is a superhero movie
Jordan Williams Man Of Steel is shit, actually.
Jordan Williams And it's still a sci-fi.
A superhero film isn't a genre, it just means it was adapted from a comic book. There are comic books that aren't about super heroes, hundreds of them, just as there is an incredible amount of films based on books, yet genres vary.
An obvious example of a scifi that has different genres in it is Blade Runner: it's as much a film Noir as much as it is a sci-fi.
i know what a genre is i have done media for the past 4 years its just i didnt word it correctly i suppose and im just saying i wouldnt associate the film with sci-fi if you know what i mean :)
and im not a huge fan of superman in general either but thats a different topic really
jeremy is such an objective reviewer, he actually took this movie seriously
the 5th element
That's a GREAT movie...
Aliens and Predator
Probably The Terminator Series.
Same only 1+2. 3 and 4 sucked hard
Well thats what I was referring.
I Love Will Smith he’s 1 of my Favorite Actors, my Favorites Of his are Bad Boys 1 & 2, Men In Black 1 & 3, Enemy Of The State, Wild Wild West, I Robot, I Am Legend, Hancock, & Suicide Squad 2016
Stargate SG1
After Earth could have been a lot better. Yet another wasted potential.
I like Oblivion more than Star wars and Star trek.
Oblivion? How? The ending to that movie was straight bullshit.
Shawn Taylor because you didn't get it or what?
Shawn Taylor which Jack? and shot by whom?
Tech 49 and Sally. Lookup "HISHE oblivion" The 1:31 mark is exactly what should have happen when Jack (tech 49) went to TET.
Signs? A good movie? HELL NO THAT MOVIE WAS STUPID
If Chris Stuckmann loves it, it's okay... But sadly his "analized" video of Signs didn't resolve the problems I had with it. His attempt to defend the water thing didn't work and he could't find a way to explain why the fuck the aliens couldn't open or break down a fucking door.
Because it's hard to defend because those were stupid fucking things in the movie.
ha this made number 1 worst movie of the year on the list. that's why I'm watching it.
district 9
District 9 was horrible BUT is better than this movie!!!!!!!!!!
*****
In a weird way...yes
Bide Did we watch the same movie? District 9 was fucking awesome. Miles ahead of this piece of crap.
2001 : A Space Odyssey is not only the best sci fi movie but the best movie of ALL TIME.
Its incredibly ambitious and yet pulls it off. Also HAL is a great villain, the stargate sequence is mindblowing, the use of classical music is really good etc....
review lost
Jeremy's number 1 on the worst list
Pacific rim!
how about no
sonicjrjr14 woot? I liked watching the action sequences of pacific rim, the story however was terrible! that Love thingy between mister cool guy and miss asia just felt really forced.
I just saw this movie for the first time today, and I have to admit, even though I had a few issues with it here and there, it wasn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. I was decent popcorn flick.
man this movie fucking sucked.
Lolololol dogshit
your profile picture is gross
o i c how it is u want that real time chaat? u got it!define homophopic and go figure i suspected it but i know it....ur gay
Adam Ophir
blah blah these words have a negative connotation siiiick bro u know what they actually have a funny connotation to me but the denotation is whats negative. stop trying to sound smart cuz u know what u reallt sound like?
" YOU SOUND LIKE A BITCH'
yea rite go where? prbly to brazzers to watch gay porn
My favourite sci-fi film was Battle: LA. I'm legit, no trolling or flaming. I personally thought it was a great movie, my most fav even.
"Mr. Nobody". Favorite SciFi. Favorite movie of all time.
Literally, I saw the trailer to this and the first thing I said was, "I bet Shymalan wrote that." And then I vowed that I wouldn't see it. So I basically saved myself :P
The crazy thing is that I believe this is a good movie that’s prevented from being one by one singular element, Will and Jaden Smith being stoic solider type characters, like imagine if this was the same movie except Will and Jaden gave performances more like something out of say Will Smith’s performance from I Am Legend, where it’s still serious but it’s filled with more heart and emotion, and also have them look at each other and father and son rather than as fellow soldiers, I can guarantee this entire movie would be 10x more engaging had their characters been portrayed like that rather than how they are here
Does anybody remember hitchickers guide to the galaxy
M. Night Shymalan is so adorable, though! He's like a little puppy
Actually like the story. The psychological aspect of it was extremely well done. The conflict of the sisters death. I get it. Yes jaden, needs more work but hey its a process. I dig it ;)
Then 4 years later we get After earth two:Gemini man
I agree with you Jeremy on this one, but that scene where he wakes up under the eagles wing…… the feels.
Night .
Ohh, predators! I thought you said Predators. Lol.
Yes I do know what courage is It's a choice fear is not since you can't chose to be afraid of something.
