Back then, I had no idea who Shyamalan was. So, I never got to see it and still haven't. Granted, I know enough from cultural osmosis and crap ton of reviews what the movie is about.

It brings me great joy to see my absolute favorite wrestler from when I was a child do so well for himself. He's such a talented actor & seems like a good person in general. Seeing him in more central roles is exciting, I hope he continues to find success!
@@Bungalow339 I didn't mean they were good actors lmao, the rock has done extremely well tho, he's actually a decent actor but I guess that's because he mostly plays himself aha
I guess I just always had a soft spot for these underdog actors ... so when Dave Bautista, a muscle-packed wrestler, keeps on showing everyone that he's a really good actor, that in itself brings me joy. He also seems like a nice guy.
I have always said that Dave Bautista and his acting is who the Rock thinks he is. I have not watched a bad movie with Dave, he just gives the set energy and he is a underrated actor!
The rock is goofy it's hard to take any character of his seriously. He can give a decent performance once and a while but always shallow as far as character depth.
The rock gets so much hate to no reason it’s insane💀 he’s so positive & uplifting and all anybody does is talk shit. Your either racist or dumb as a rock, he’s brought so many ideas to life your just hating
This movie is based on a short novel by Paul Tremblay that absolutely broke me, the tension, the emotions and the surreal yet realistic story are just incredible. I also tend to like Shyamalan's more "minimalist" works, and this plot fits right in, imo. Just hope it does the book justice.
I liked the book ... until the ending (or lack of) I just spoke with someone who saw the movie and Shyamalan changed up the second half and ending. Couple big book plot points were completely changed ... which is acceptable since it's an adaptation. I just remember hating the ending of the book. Like being on a rollercoaster and it stops at the top of the hill and tells you get off the ride.
@@soyner I think the book ending worked well for a novel. It wasn't exactly what I expected, but there was a point where the story felt less about the world or the apocalypse and more about the people, so the ambiguity didn't bothered me that much after a moment of reflection. But yeah, it probably wouldn't work well on a movie. I don't mind changes, as long as they're good ones, and I'm curious to see what they did to adapt the end.
Pausing the video to say how spot on you are, Denis Villeneuve absolutely skyrocketed Bautistas career with that cameo in Blade Runner 2049, so happy to see him get more work in the industry.
Just got out of the theater! It was good! Not perfect but a solid 7. It really reminded me of the ending of Cabin In The Woods, which I think handled the whole “apocalypse” thing better than this film. But it was very suspenseful and a fun time! Bautista was PHENOMENAL! He really blew me away with his performance!

I really enjoyed this movie. A truly inventive thriller where no one is really the bad guy: One group believes they are preventing the apocalypse, the other does everything to save his family, and convinces himself that the group is crazy. I loved the exploration of masculinity in this film, how someone could go down the role of protecter in a great way, but sometimes goes too far. Truly not something I expected from the same guy who made The Happening.

I made a short movie in highschool that featured 4 murderous zealots that showed up to the door to "spread the word"(only to get inside the house) and although it was a cheap, corny high school project I got a A because I showed the dad watching a old western flick, and had the sound of the horses stomping hooves fade into the knock at the door to represent the 4 horsemen. I dont see why big, high budget dierectors cant implement more tools like that, that make it obvious but still "clickable" were its not right in your face.
I saw the move last night, and I really liked the film. Solid tension-filled thriller and good Shyamalan. I had read the book and even with the major deviations, including the ending, I thought Shyamalan did a good job staying faithful to the feel of the original story while making a film that stands on its own.
The ending of the film ruined the ENTIRE adaptation retroactively. The hell did Shyamalan have to remove the awesome ambiguity? That was what made the novel so great. Readers could have different views on if it were real or not, which also makes the drama that much more intense. The other major deviation was stupidity. The WHOLE point of the gun was wasted and it removed a HUGE amount of guilt the one father feels. So dumb.
@@OberynTheRedViper i haven’t read the book but I feel like a more ambiguous ending would have been way better. Also at the point the guy has a gun I definitely would have shot them both and got the family out of there.
I think that the four horsemen explanation was an avenue for deeper exploration. A rabbit trail if you will. We notice that there are 4 of them, but how many noticed their professions were diametrically opposed to the avatar they represented? Or that their shirt colors coincided with the color of the Horseman that they were supposed to represent? The nurse (life saver) in the pale cream-colored shirt represented death. The electrician (a supplier of a life bearing utility) who wore red represented War. The cook (one who feeds and sustains life) who wore black represented Pestilence/Famine. Finally, the teacher (an instructor and educator) wore white and represented Conquest. Sometimes the obvious was meant to draw you in for a deeper reflection. Love the channel and all your work!
Did u even read what u wrote there!? It made absolutely no sense at all. He need absolute freedom to make amazing film. He made dud when big studio watches over him n restricted his involvement
I think you would LOVE the book it’s adapted from if you haven’t already read it. It pretty much solves all of the negative aspects of the movie and ground the story into a balls to the wall ambiguous thriller. I still really liked the movie too, but the novels final act hits so much harder.
This movie is going to give Groff so much recognition… recognition that he deserves. He is phenominal. I’ve grown up with him and his family for my entire life. Love them all and so proud of him 🤍
Saw this last night and it was an incredible job by all the actors but especially Dave Bautista. It certainly was one of MKS best movies in awhile. The camera work and cinematography was near perfect. Highly recommend.
The Menu is a great example of a recent movie that doesn't force feed you all the subtleties and allows you find them for yourself upon rewatch or with video breakdowns. The goats leading them onto the island, Judas Goats are something slaughterhouses use to keep the cattle calm when going into said slaughterhouse. Chef says no substitutions are allowed at his restaurant, regarding the food, but Margo is a substitution for the person who was originally supposed to go. Things like that feel more clever when they're not expressly pointed out.
All things considered, it's incredible M Night's career survived "Last Airbender." It really felt like he didn't care about making a movie that did justice to the source material. And Will Smith saying that getting his son involved in "After Earth" was the biggest mistake of his career (well the biggest mistake prior to last year's Oscars) only damaged M Night's reputation even more.
@@VARMOT123 Self finances his movies probably cause he made so many Big flops. That's why the channel described him as "the embodiment of hit or miss".
What I really enjoyed about The menu is that it just presents its story as is and leaves all the interpretations to the viewer, the film does not consider its duty to explain any possible alegory contained within it but trusts you to do it. I have my own interpretation of the film that I honestly haven't seen any youtube video even mention, and I truly appreciate that and I believe that's a movie I will keep on thinking about for some time to come and keep recomending it to people
I am glad for dave batista is growing and developing his acting chops, really like the dude and most of the movies he makes. Cheering for him and will check this movie cuz of him.
I legit feel like I watched a complete different movie from everyone in this comment section. It was okay acted for the two fathers and well done for DB. The only thing it had me at was I wasn’t sure if the “apocalypse” part was real after two people died. As soon as it was confirmed with the planes I immediately knew what the rest of the movie was. Honestly laughed from that point on and thought it was a comedy movie. Didn’t care about any of the characters or anything. The only thing I can walking out that was interesting is that the people who had to decide were homosexual. In a male/female couple the parents could decide to save the world by killing the child because they can logically have more kids. Which means that one of the fathers is going to die. Spelling out that the four horseman were the literally the people was just dumbing the whole hour and forty minutes down to 30 seconds for me. That’s just my opinion though.
I saw it last night and I am still ruminating. I thought Ben Aldridge was standout excellent, but all the cast were. Some very interesting visual storytelling/framing from Shyamalan and his Cinematographers here and just a general sense of dread throughout. Despite it ending in such a way that I don't normally like, in context of what this story was about I was okay with it (despite deviating from the book). I think it will be divisive, but there was enough to enjoy here with the performances, visual storytelling choices, and the thematic/philosophical aspects that warrant further discussion long after seeing it. It's a film that stays with you I think.
Loved the Chess vs Checkers analogy. Filmmakers need to stop thinking their audience is stupid. There are so many that break down the details and those "aha" moments are as cool as Jeremy described.
I haven’t seen the move but I’ve read the book: The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay (great book by the way). The ending of the book is crazy ambiguous so I’m interested to see what ending this movie has if it’s not ambiguous. I think the stories strength in the novel is it’s ambiguity. Still excited for the movie though!
Finally someone acknowledging that this was a book. Everyone going on making it sound like this was from the mind if MNS . The book was better too, he was too much of a coward to kill of the little girl like in the book.
That negative is something I see happening a lot in films and television these days - details and puzzle pieces being explained in no uncertain terms to the audience. I've always felt it's more fun if we have to come to conclusions ourselves about what's happening in a story. And it's cool if the story stops short of simply explaining it, but as long as it's ultimately left for us to come to the conclusion ourselves. Anyways, if that's the biggest issue with this film going in, I'm already excited!
Alright, just got back from seeing it and I liked it! Solid 7 out of 10. As per usual, Shyamalan’s directing was beautiful. All of our protagonists made sense, so there weren’t any “why would they do that” moments to take me out of it. I will say the film played it pretty safe, but I’d rather have a solid safe movie than a film that picks all the wrong ways to be edgy.

From memory, the lowest rating is dogshit. Next is forgotten in t minus 2 seconds. Next is a good time, no alcohol required. Then there’s worth buying on bluray/4K, then finally, the best rating is Awesometacular. So, using that system, this movie was rated a 3. I love jeremys reviews too, they’re a great length and he really clearly states why a movie is, or is not good, without spoiling anything.
In advance sorry for possible typos. English is not my native language and I have dylexia. He has a video on his channels front page explaining his raiting system. Dogshit is the worst raiting he can give a movie and awesometacular is the best raiting. Everything else falls in between and should not necessarily be boxed into places in a hierarchy. Movies that he rates good time if you are drunk can also be good or bad. Sometimes it means alcohol is needed to endure to get through the movie sometimes alcohol just enhances the experience. Jeremy thinks there are great masterfully done movies that just don't hit him on a personal level. He doesn't want to rate a movie better or worse based on his own personal preferences. However if you want to simplified version it generally works from worst to best like this: Bad movies Dogshit=not worth watching; usually top 10 worst movies of the year consist of movies that get this rating Not going to remember in T-minus=forgettable but not terrible Might be good/Might be bad Good time if you are drunk=whether you like it depends. Might be fun but don't watch if you think it will ruin your day. Good movies Good time no alchol required=Some peoples favourite movies can get this rating. It just means Jeremy himself is propably not going to buy it. If you are at all interested and have the time and money you should check it out. Buy on Blu Ray=a movie that Jeremy has or is going buy on blu ray. If your tastes are similar to Jeremys you might like it too. Great movies Awesometacular=Jeremy is a fanboy of this movie. Top 10 movies of the year list usually consists of movies that got this rating. Theses movies are not all Oscar winners or perfect but Jeremy definetly enjoys them. If Jeremy is a fan of a certain IP and the movie in his opinion does justice to the fanchise then he is very likely to give it this raiting.
Having read the book the movie is based on, the whole Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was in the book and spoonfed to the reader, and the book itself didn't challenge the reader on its topics, so I understand what Shyamalan was dealing with while adapting the book.
Really enjoyed this movie. It reminded me of the trolly dilemma in psychology as well as just ethical dilemmas in general. I always enjoy M Night’s films and your reviews.
Gotta love it when a movie tries something original for once. Past few decades the industry/community has been oversaturated with remakes an such. I just hope we don't get to a point where we praise everything new that's original.
I enjoyed this film quite a bit and was especially impressed by Batista's performance. I made the "four horsemen of the apocalypse" connection before it was even mentioned in the movie.
Just saw the movie,it was amazing imo,m knight is such a creative artist. I admire his work. After watching this video it just hit me that the entirety of the movie takes place at the cabin and doesn't adventure out from there
What I find a great mystery does is hide the details that give yhe movie away. Either bury the clues, keep them in the background out of focus, make it a piece of diolgue that seems vague but important enough that isn't obviously being covered, those kinds of things. Like I'd say The Chamber of Secrets book did it well and take notes from that. Also film makers trust your audience! If they don't get it, but it makes sense, they'll love it. If they catch it before on their first watch, that's cool too but would be cool if they felt like they earned it!
3:15 a perfect example of this is just the other day I was watching kill count it was the one of stranger things season 3 and I stopped watching it about a quarter the way in and started to go to sleep when suddenly a realisation hits me, first let me explain so season 3 starts with rats eating fertiliser then turning into goop, a old woman is also seen eating the fertiliser and later she also turns into meat paste, the show never says why this happens, so as I’m laying down doing my best impression of someone sleeping my brain is ticking over and boom it hits me in season 2 it’s a plot point that the pumpkins are going rotten turns out there growing over tunnels filled with upside down biome which is making them go off so the humans can’t eat them and there even to far gone for animal feed so they will most likely have been turned into fertiliser that is of course full of upside down fungus. The show never says anything of this heck after the second episode of season 3 I don’t think the fertiliser is mentioned again it just lets it sit there for you to put together (btw I haven’t seen the last of us but I now hear that’s also how it all goes to poop because food chain) I’m actually a little embarrassed that it took me that long to spot the link but it’s almost a throwaway plot.

During the movie, I was really happy to have an answer at the end. I needed it for emotional well-being haha. But as I was driving home, I kind of wished it was open-ended. It would have been fun to hear people’s thoughts on if it was real or not.
Just watched this yesterday and it was incredible. Absolutely loved it. I think a lot of people are too focused on the "twist" and missing the central theme of sacrifice in the movie. It was beautifully crafted.
I saw it yesterday, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Sometimes, it's good to just go to a movie with no expectations and let the movie do its thing.
@JF3 Except most people knew that right from the get go. I mean all I watched was the trailer first and I knew basically what the entire movie was. It was clear they were the four horsemen. It also clear they were eventually going to sacrifice themselves.
Knock at the Cabin gives pretty strong performances, made me make predictions as to what’s going on constantly, and is certainly better than anything M. Night Shyamalan has done in years.
I heard that MNS had a new movie coming out but didn't give it a 2nd thought until I saw a trailer and realized it was based on one of my favorite horror book of all time, "Cabin at thte end of the world" by Paul Trembley. And it's not even his best book! Look out for the adaptation of his "A head full of ghosts" (along with Pet semetary, the best horror I've read) that is rumored to be on its way.
I knew Dave Bautista had this in him in 2005 when he had a wrestling storyline with Triple H (I am a huge wrestling fan.) I am super proud of him and to see him go from wrestling to a very successful career as an actor is something I love.
Watched this tonight and personal opinion aside, I honestly hated how the news got that Tsunami footage because everyone was clearly dead, there’s no way to send that, there’s no way the phone was still working underwater lmao. Took me out of it
I feel like M. Night may have set the bar too high for himself too early in his career with the simultaneous releases of Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. I wonder if he will ever reach so many good films in a row again. He almost did with The Visit then Split, but kind of screwed up the landing with Glass... Still kinda bummed by that ending. He did David Dunn dirty. Don't know if I can forgive him for that. Yes... I'm bitter. He really is a gifted filmmaker though. When he is on point, he really shines.
I just got out of seeing this movie, and as soon as I go on my phone I see that you've posted your review. What are the chances! Anyway, I really did love this film. I love how it keeps you guessing with who is right and who is wrong, and overall I had a fantastic time. I'll need to reflect on the film a little more, but this could end up being my favourite Shyamalan film.
Easily his worst film. So poorly written and acted. Acting besides Batista and the two fathers was awful. The 4 horseman ppl did the absolute worst job in trying to convince the couple it was real. I liked this movie because I read the book it was based on, and I loved how faithful M. Night was in adapting it, he did change the ending but I think that was to give it something more hopeful, whereas the book ending is very drab.
Classic? It was predictable as hell. I literally grasped that they were the horsemen, and that the couple would eventually sacrifice themselves, within the first 10 mins of the movie.
You mean because there are real gay couples in real life too?? AND it’s the way the story was written in the book this movie is BASED ON? It’s pretty obvious what you think about gay people when you have to put quotations around the word “couple”. Don’t worry, there are still 7.2 billion other movies out there with straight “couples” for you to feel safe with. Glad to know I won’t be seing you at the theater for this one.👍
Personally this was the best movie I've seen this year behind Air. Really caught me off guard. It's a perfect example of Harmon's story circle & Campbell's hero's journey done to perfection which lot of modern movies completely miss. The movie engages the viewer with ultimatum/choice which is the main theme of the movie along with sacrifice. I do agree that it's not as 'vague' compared to his older films but we're living in a time where audience have shorter attention span than ever. And rather than using violence for violence sake, it's used to keep the pace & tension from falling too far after revealing the hand. Amazing acting from all the cast, especially Bautista & Kirsten who greets & hooks the viewer from the opening just with dialogue. I wish they make more movies like where storytelling is the focal point rather than cgi action.
Spoiler warning just in case! I don't really know how well this movie would hold up on a rewatch. I kinda feel like it was really engaging up until the last 15 minutes when Eric had obviously already decided he was going to be the one to sacrifice himself. I kept expecting more after that happened, but it just kinda kept going. The diner scene really did a lot to deflate the movie in my personal opinion. This could just be an issue unique to me, but I feel like M. Night has made himself so known for twist endings that it kinda felt weird that there wasn't one. I think it might've been way more effective to end the movie on a more ambiguous note. Maybe Wen and Andrew drive away while planes are still falling in the distance and lightning is striking. Did they fail to prevent the apocalypse or are those just residuals from it slowly crawling to a stop after the sacrifice? I will compliment Shyamalan on his camerawork though. The tension was palpable, especially in the first scene. Those uncomfortable angles and close-ups show just how talented he is as a filmmaker. On a scale from Last Airbender to Unbreakable, I'd say it sits a little above average. Not amazing, but it had some awesome moments. EDIT: I also applaud the marketing for this movie. They were adamant at showing very little. Most of it is only from the first 15 minutes or so. I was shocked when Rupert Grint died so early. More movies should follow this approach, it left me more engaged not thinking of missing trailer scenes in the back of my mind.
Completely agree about the ending. So dull and just nothing interesting about it. Kills partner. World is “apparently” ok now thanks to a stupid diner scene with a tv. Drive off in truck.. so dull.
This was one of his better movies. That movie with Mark Whalberg was useless. Also, My God the acting was amazing. Especially by the guy who ended up being alive at the end with the little girl. But all acting was absolutely amazing!!
Just watched this and fully agree. This film could have been a 9 out of 10 if they didn't explain everything at the end. Really would have been one of those "gotta watch it twice" mindf*cks if MKS carved some of the script out. Not sure how it aligns with the book. Despite that, it was still a solid 7 or 8 for me since it did so much with so few set pieces. Just well done. Another M Knight hit! Hope he's back on track, he really does make some great films.
i hate the lack of subtlety in big box office movies, its so annoying that hollywood just expects the audience to be too dumb to pick up on things. even one of my favorite movies from the last 5 years, joker, had a dumb over-explaining scene that would've had so much more impact if it just left it to interpretation
I agree, Dave Bautista is the standout highlight of this film and he just keeps getting better and better, and the Fact stands, is that Dave Bautista is indeed the best wrestler turned actor
As someone who read/loved the book and didn't see the movie yet, all I say is that in the book by the end you still don't know if it was bullshit or not and that's why it was so powerful. I hope the movie keeps that aspect, but I somehow doubt it.

Great book! Love his writing

Just got out of the theater! It was good! Not perfect but a solid 7. It really reminded me of the ending of Cabin In The Woods, which I think handled the whole “apocalypse” thing better than this film. But it was very suspenseful and a fun time!
Completely disagree. Besides Batista and the two fathers everyone else was pretty bad actors. The plot was terrible.
That's awesome! Are you interested in directing?
High school had big Scorcese energy bruh NGL 💪🏿
Can i see the short film?
So dumb.
I did not know this was a book.
Didn’t feel any tension throughout the movie personally. Legit thought it was a comedy as soon as the planes started falling from the sky.
M Night's movies have always really relied on the strength of the actors to lead the story. Even if the story is very weak.
Shyamalan really needs to have restrictive, low budgets. Those are generally his best movies. Give him too much freedom, and it all just goes to hell.

Dude, every movie Batistas in I like. He's really a great actor.

Brilliantly acted, beautifully shot. Always had me guessing to where it was going. It was excellent.
@@EvOxDrama yup you watched a different movie or you went with stupidly high expectations

However if you want to simplified version it generally works from worst to best like this:
Bad movies
Dogshit=not worth watching; usually top 10 worst movies of the year consist of movies that get this rating
Not going to remember in T-minus=forgettable but not terrible
Might be good/Might be bad
Good time if you are drunk=whether you like it depends. Might be fun but don't watch if you think it will ruin your day.
Good movies
Good time no alchol required=Some peoples favourite movies can get this rating. It just means Jeremy himself is propably not going to buy it. If you are at all interested and have the time and money you should check it out.
Buy on Blu Ray=a movie that Jeremy has or is going buy on blu ray. If your tastes are similar to Jeremys you might like it too.
Great movies
Awesometacular=Jeremy is a fanboy of this movie.

Jeremy Jahns is a smart ass. Some people would've never caught that 4 horsemen reference ever!!! We needed that detail in the movie!!!
Agreed. The best film for that was The Prestige, I think.

Drive off in truck.. so dull.
Been watching this legends vids every Friday for the last 10 years 😂😂 and some days in between! Never change bro!
Why only Fridays?
@@everythingisawesome2903 when his new new drops. Trust, I’ve spent many days ending in “Y” binging the champ!
"Negatives require more elaborations than positives."
I'm stealing that line.
This was one of his better movies.
That movie with Mark Whalberg was useless.
Also, My God the acting was amazing. Especially by the guy who ended up being alive at the end with the little girl.
But all acting was absolutely amazing!!
"show, don't tell" Is the first rule of great writing.
