My wife and I went to this movie for our first date. We have been together for 9 years now. I think it may have been a shared trauma that made our relationship strong.
My favorite part was when Will warned his son that 1. Humans haven't been on earth in many thousands of years and 2. Every new animal on earth evolved specifically to kill us (humans). Imagine having the goal to continually improve at killing a species you have never met.
I think it's trying to imply that since earth realized that the biggest threat for its ecosystem was humanity, it evolved specifically so that it won't get infected by humanity again.
It’s so ironic that Will Smith shoved his kids into the spotlight at such a young age which is opposite of what his character in King Richard did with his kids because he wanted them to have a childhood
I love howWill Smith couldn’t even be bothered to attend M. Night’s birthday to pitch his film but just does it over the phone later after pretending to apologize.
"No I mean technically when you land in a plane it's a controlled crash land, so technically we have crash landed on earth." -Jaden Smith Honestly I used to say shit similar to this to my parents, but my dad would tell me to shut the fuck up.
9:25 That is the most disturbing thing I have ever heard. What parent would even entertain the idea of their kid giving up their life for them rather than the other way around? I'm really sad for those kids.
Casual reminder that Willow Smith actually committed self harm because she was so unhappy that her father FORCED her to do Whip My Hair and become a national laughingstock. True facts, look it up.

@@Hammerhead547 Wrong. She actually committed self harm because of the pressure Will put on her during the whole Whip My Hair thing. His kids deserve sympathy, not judgement. Will nearly drove his fucking daughter to commit suicide because of the expectations he put on her, like wtf.

@@rhodopisdenile8977 , well, as we've seen with the case of Britney Spears, a parent can take a child actor/singer and force them to perform for their own profit or other personal gain. I was a teenager when Spears started having very public mental health crises, and I judged and mocked her like most everyone else at the time. I fully did not understand the context and did not try to understand. I am glad to see that people generally seem to be more aware of the abuse that child stars are often subjected to, so there's more empathy and less judgment. The entertainment industry as a whole is a very predatory and abusive industry.
I blame Will Smith for every bad thing about this movie. Shyamalan's reputation for shit was well established at this point, and Will still chose to work with him. And he was clearly more excited about the prospect of this movie than Jaden was. To me, this movie is a Will Smith ego trip disguised as a father/son project. If you two want to bond and have family time, fine, but leave the rest of America out of it.
9:11 this is a beautiful encapsulation of the relationship Will has with his kids and how that love is not what he makes out to be. Think about that answer. If he was crash-landed on a planet rather than being happy that it was just him with his family safe somewhere else he'd rather them BOTH be stranded on an unknown planet essentially sentencing them both to death rather than just himself. When answering stream of consciousness this is what he unwittingly describes his relationship with Jaden as. Worse yet is his explanation that he'd bring Jaden not because he loves him and couldn't bear to never see him again, but because Jaden would "die for him". He was so anxious to virtue signal how much he loves his son that he sprinted headlong into pretty much the worst possible answer you could give. Hats off to Megan from Boston because that innocuous question elicited possibly the realest look we've ever gotten into the reality of Will Smith the off-camera father.
I'm not a fanboy of Will/Jaden Smith, i'm not even a fan at all really, but i think you're reading a bit too deep into what happened there. I haven't watched the whole clip, but it seems as though Will had no idea that question was coming up, so in the moment, he made up an answer that he didn't fully think through.
@@Manglet762 That's the entire point though. He wasn't crafting an answer and that's what he said when his guard was down. The point was that everything about Will's family is not about his family, but about Will. Honestly I don't know if I believe that his answer would've been different had he known the question ahead of time. Something tells me that the realization that I came to about his answer would not have come to him.
Will: (talking about Jaden): Just based on our relationship, I know you'd be willing to give your life for me. Jaden: ummm I can't believe you could have so much of an ego that you would state that your son would give your life for you. Your son.
Will: Okay son, we're in a strange and hostile environment but what we need to do is stay calm and don't panic. Jaden: How are you so relaxed?! I'm freaking out right now! Will: Well, I'm okay because I have you. Jaden: W-Wow Dad, that's...that's so nice of you to say. Will: Yeah, I mean if something dangerous comes around then I can just use you as a human shield! Jaden: Wait WHAT?! Will: Of course! As your father it is your duty to protect and take care of me even if it costs you your life! Jaden: B-But shouldn't it be the other way around? As in 'YOU' would protect 'ME' with 'YOUR' life? I'm your son! Will: Don't be selfish Jaden!
That's why I don't like him as much as others do. The guy's charismatic as fuck but he ends up being pretty egotistical and fake with his smiles and sweet words. You get the feeling that he isn't really genuine.
I love how the poster for After Earth in that one Shyamalan interview makes it look like Will and Jadyn are just staring at him in disbelief and anger.
Yes, it's undefined because when you divide by zero all values if you keep doing it regardless of the positive/negative value it always approaches zero even when it logically shouldn't. Edit, Yeah, I meant dividing by zero is undefined because it approaches paradoxical infinities. I shouldn't comment while sick but I was bedridden and bored.
@@thepredator9002 Really? I made a clearly marked edit. I meant dividing by zero is considered undefined because when you actually do it you start reaching paradoxical states of infinity or solutions. If I take 1/0 and consider it repeated subtraction from a set until I have nothing left thats: 1-0-0-0-0 ad infinitum and it'll reach infinity. 2/0 would be 2-0-0-0-0-0 ad infinitum So that would mean that 1=2 which we know is not true so it can't be true 1=/=2. Then let's throw in some real math. Do 1/1=1, 1/.1=10, 1/.01=100 and you do this and you get 1,000 and 10,000, ad infinitum and you get infinity. You can do the same with 1/2, 1/.2, 1/.02 ad infinitum you get infinity. So again 1/2 = 1/1 which is 2=1 which isn't true. If you do the same thing with a negative integers you end up with negative infinity. You graph it and you get lines that never approach zero. Zero is a value and null value but a defined value, but I meant to saying dividing by zero makes the result undefined, which was what Jayden Smith was probably thinking about. There is no limit.

"We had a linguist come in and breakdown what language would be used 1000 years in the future." And it's modern English with a slightly bizarre twang? Are you sure the linguist wasn't just a homeless man who realized M. Night Shyamalan is a moron who would pay him if he pretended to be a linguist?
That Linguist was most likely right. English WILL grow to be alot more common in the feature than it is now, and as it spreads and grows, it may pick up little bits of the languages it replaces
***** " around Mediterranean Sea" thats not exactly a diverse area. every content on earth now has at least one english speaking population, and many countries like canada, the us, britain, australia, etc speak predominantly english
Language 1000 years in the future would be literally incomprehensible to us now. Not just some kooky accent. Average people can't even understand the Canterbury Tales spoken aloud, let alone Beowulf. Give it a try
Honestly, even half that time would be difficult. At my local library I managed to find a copy of Gulliver's Travels written in the original 16th century print. You know, back when the "s" looked like "f". It was readable, but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a learning curve when starting it out.
They could just talk normaly while make sure people understand they don´t actualy speak English for example with writing. Similiar how show Vikings do it or every dubbed version of (not just) American movie where English is not first language.
Latin was the most popularized language among the Roman empire. Now it is considered a dead language over a thousand years later. Only used for research and how to spell and pronounce words in kid's spelling bees.
I’m half convinced you’re right, but I also figure that now we have the internet and content that will be easily accessible forever we are heading for a significant language stagnation the likes of which has never been seen in human history. Also humanity will destroy itself within a thousand years anyway 🤷🏻♂️

Low intelligence? That is...not true. Researchers can't even come to a consensus on how to measure intelligence (general intelligence vs. specific intelligences). And the parts of the brain related to higher thought are not the same as those that generate fear as an emotional and physiological response. It is true that a limited range of emotion is a characteristic of psychopathy, which isn't really an actual psychiatric diagnosis. And people with psychopathic traits can be of average or above average intelligence.
"You know, just based on our relationship I know you'd be willing to give your life for me" That line made me laugh, because of how bizarre that line of thought is, as well as it make Will Smith look like he had a son to use as a meat shield. I'm all for supporting your kid and their ideas, but when their thoughts outspoken are that stupid, dont be afraid to tell them that they are wrong. I'm certainly glad people did that for me.
Tell them that they're "wrong" to have their own opinions and ideas? If you tell your kid you think the way they feel and see the world is stupid you're a shitty person

I feel sorry for you. Every aspect of his films are easily understood. It is not genius unless your bar is set so incredibly low that the average high school drop-out would be beyond your "genius" level. If M. Night is the "closest thing to a god" then I would hope this entire universe gets rebooted repeatedly until that doesn't happen.
Will Smith is one of those people who is forceful enough to seem like he makes sense. But when you really pay attention to him, he has no fucking clue how to talk, or even be relatable.
Rewatching this video for the millionth time, I was finally struck by the similarities between Will Smith and Donald Trump as parents. Both named a child after themselves (Willow Smith and Donald Trump Jr.). Both keep the child they are most disappointed in out of the limelight (Trey Smith and Tiffany Trump). Both pushed their kids into the "family business" (real estate/crime and acting). Both have made creepy comments about their children in interviews (Trump saying he would sleep with his daughter, and basically any interview clip from YMS' video). I'm sure that this is a basic template for narcissistic celebrity parents and that there are many other examples. These are just the ones I thought of.
I can't stand how Will Smith talks to his son in these clups. It's like Jaden is 4 or 5 and he's just trying to entertain him. Jaden: Dad, trees are blue. And 0 is nothing, but something. Will: Uh huh. That's deep. you're so smart. Here. Have a cookie. Show everyone your confused puppy dog face. Such a cute kid.
This is only a theory and I know we can't know for sure, but I suspect that the "real" Will Smith is the closest to his character in After Earth, out of all his roles. M. Night described Jaden being sensitive and protective of his emotions and Will effortlessly shifting from one emotion to another. That tells me that Jaden isn't faking his emotions. You only try to hide genuine emotions from other people because you are afraid of being judged. It also tells me that Will Smith is faking his emotions when he's acting, because it's unlikely that he is able to genuinely feel happy, then sad, then angry, then happy again, etc. on command in a matter of moments. So he is capable of (relatively) convincingly faking emotions like happiness, empathy, and so on. Why would a young man be afraid of being judged for his emotions? Perhaps because the people close to him have a habit of judging and shaming him for expressing his emotions? People like his father? But why would Will Smith shame his son for showing emotion, you ask? Because he does really want to be the perfect celebrity family. His children are a reflection of his brand and image. He named one after himself, he keeps his disappointing first child out of he limelight, he pushes his son on directors so he can be a movie star, he has his son train to look like a Hollywood hunk when running, etc. To be the perfect representative of the family brand, Jaden has to be able to control and fake his emotions. Hide when he's feeling sad, look happy for the cameras. I think that Will Smith is performing all the time, to the point that he has suppressed all emotion like Cypher Rage (sp?). The Oscar slap fits into this theory because Will Smith initially laughed in response to the joke. Did he really find it funny? Or was he acting like he found it funny, to play the role of a good award show attendee? Then he marched onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock before sitting down and yelling at him. Did he really feel angry? Or was he acting angry, to play the role of a protective husband? Does Will Smith ever feel anything? Does he exist when he's not being perceived?
How to screw your kids up? Force them to become superstars from early age, tell them they're awesome at everything they do or say and expose the ridiculousness of it all to the entire world. That's bad parenting right there.
Jaden could become a decent actor, if his father wouldnt shove him in big movies. Critizice him when he isnt good And get a reality check himself too what good acting actually is.
"We can't just stand her as uninvolved observers!" It sounds like Shyamalan tried to find a synonym for bystander because he thought using normal words would sound too boring

Best explanation I can give as to why this grown ass man is agreeing with and encouraging the pretentious little shit thoughts of his teenage son is probably related to their adherence to Scientology. Will's a scientologist, no? If I'm not mistaken, the religion is all about how our reality is more or less not real (a dream or simulation), so some kid questioning "what is something" or "what is nothing" or "trees are blue" probably makes him happy cause he thinks he raised his son well in his religion or something.....fuck if I know man, I'm just spitballing here to try and make sense of how retarded Will is acting.
AndrewArgonaut Raised Baptist. If you follow news and such on the matter, there seems to be no clear answer on what he is. He's never stated it and his agents actively avoid answering. Unless you know a source I don't?
9:12 Will to Jaden "If you had to I know you'd give your life for me" That is the single most self centered narcissistic thing I have ever heard. A dad expecting his son to sacrifice their life to save his own, like damn. "Ah shit son don't worry. If you die I'll just make another one" It should be the opposite way around
Gary Whitta wrote the final two episodes of the spectacular Walking Dead game by Telltale, so the fact that he wrote this shit really shocks me. Though from what I see in interviews, a lot of his writing was altered.
well a crash landing is any landing where the plane can't take off from again. and most intercontinental flights end without enough fuel to take off again. so Jaden is kinda right

I appreciate your explanation. If the audience needed to read the book to fully understand the film, then I think they messed up even more than I originally thought.
British Tea I just wanted to say that, the fans of _"2001: A Space Odyssey"_ say that _to fully understand the film, you should read the book_. Before you ask, Im not defending _After Earth_ nor _2001_ fans.
Not really. I read the book, yes, but for me Clarke's vision differs very much from Kubrik's. I see 2001 the movie as a big cinema experiment (like the final sequence through the Monolith is basically Kubrick experimenting with a camera, textures, colors and light). I've read several analysis of the movie reading it as a standalone work. For example, Hal being a metaphor for God, as he has the power of life and death over the Discovery crew, but a the same time displays much more emotion than his human crewmates, who act a lot more robotic, do contrast the soulessness of humans in a highly technological society, Hal being a schizophrenic psychopath that has to be lobotomized, and the final sequence being a sort of transcendence where Bowman achieves an enlightened state from a life of introspection. All that only shows that 2001, one of the best movies of all time, no question about that, does not NEED the book to be understood and reading the book will by no means end all interpretation possibilities the movie offers, far more than the book, that's entertaining but VERY badly written, from a stylistic point of view, like most sci-fi novels.
Yeah it definitely sounded like him sarcastically poking a little fun at him instead of encouraging it, which kind of made their relationship seem a little more relatable. Plus with a lot of things Will and Jaden have said more recently about that time in Jaden's life it kind of fits that narrative.

My goodness
All trees are blue
I'm not a fanboy of Will/Jaden Smith, i'm not even a fan at all really, but i think you're reading a bit too deep into what happened there. @@Manglet762 That's the entire point though. He wasn't crafting an answer and that's what he said when his guard was down. The point was that everything about Will's family is not about his family, but about Will.

"Zero is an undefined number" *Nerdy cringe* ... Not really, the term "undefined" is undefined, zero is a value...
What are you talking about? Dividing by zero is undefined, but zero is a concept even toddlers can understand and it most definitely is a number.
Zero is a whole number.
@@thepredator9002 Really? I made a clearly marked edit. I meant dividing by zero is considered undefined because when you actually do it you start reaching paradoxical states of infinity or solutions.
If I take 1/0 and consider it repeated subtraction from a set until I have nothing left thats:
1-0-0-0-0 ad infinitum and it'll reach infinity.
2/0 would be 2-0-0-0-0-0 ad infinitum
So that would mean that 1=2 which we know is not true so it can't be true 1=/=2.

Amen
OMG Carolina, I love your VFX pipeline post, nice to see you here

I think it's quite possible that he just didn't want the word 'bystanders' that close to the word 'stand'
10:47 holy shit calm down socrates
Fuck off Nietzsche and Stirner, Jayden's in the house
you just don't get it cause you haven't experienced 16 whole years of life in a secluded, pampered elite neighborhood with an overly coddling mother and father

Did everyone gloss over the fact that Trey Smith's birth name is actually Wlllard Smith III? How narcissistic can you possibly be! at 11:15
Chris Circosta Wait what’s wrong with that? Plenty of people do that lol
@@joelleinoma Try to imagine all the people you know who named a kid after themselves, and then see which ones aren't complete assholes. The answer might surprise you.
@@gaiusjuliuspleaser dude theres a difference between that and all 3 of your children having some variance of your or your wife's name. Like I dare Will Smith to make a child that doesnt have will or jay in its name.
@@gaiusjuliuspleaser wtf lmao. Y'all need to calm down. It's very normal to name your children after yourself or family and multiple children with variances or themes. It's not that deep
@@khoneymocha wtf? I've never heard of anyone that has the same name as their parent LMAO, I can't even imagine giving my own child MY name, that is fucked lol
'And I even produced the other actor.' Will Smith is only charismatic when someone else writes his dialogue for him.
He invited Will Smith to his birthday party and he didn't come
😭😭😭😭😭😂😭😭😭😭😭
I love when he emphasizes how Will has 20 projects on the go and he just about looks into the camera and says "I have 0 projects!" lmao. One day he's just gonna start screaming "I directed Sixth Sense, don't you assholes remember me!?"

M. Night.... Wtf happened to you?
Yeet Man arrogance or being a one-trick pony?
Seriously, Will and Jada named their kids WILLOW and JADEN? These two have to be the dorkiest, most overparenting parents I've ever seen in my entire life...
OR they're using the power of procreation to further advertise their names through human beings.
Disgusting... in a moral sense at least.
Hi Todd.
Jonathan Bullas Thank you for getting that ^^
Piemonster Or his new kid SAINT West.
+The Chaos Dragoness That...is almost verbatim what Todd In The Shadows said about them.
Watching Will Smith listening and seeing his son say all that bullshit while kinda agreeing, you know, that deep inside he saying '' the fuck are you saying '' that is the most amusing I see the two do and I want more of it
Best explanation I can give as to why this grown ass man is agreeing with and encouraging the pretentious little shit thoughts of his teenage son is probably related to their adherence to Scientology.
+Longknife Will Smith is a Baptist
AndrewArgonaut
Raised Baptist. If you follow news and such on the matter, there seems to be no clear answer on what he is. He's never stated it and his agents actively avoid answering. Unless you know a source I don't?
It's gotta be them damn memes son, amiright?
+Longknife i just think will smith is a parent inwardly cringing because he doesn't know how to tell his child that he needs to stop talking
adam: "Who doesn't like Will Smith?"
me, watching in 2022: Chris Rock
"I thought he had a speech impediment" 😂 😂 😂
9:12 Will to Jaden "If you had to I know you'd give your life for me" That is the single most self centered narcissistic thing I have ever heard. A dad expecting his son to sacrifice their life to save his own, like damn. "Ah shit son don't worry. If you die I'll just make another one" It should be the opposite way around
Must have been why Jaden said "UMMMMMM"
You know he was kidding right?
Gary Whitta wrote the final two episodes of the spectacular Walking Dead game by Telltale, so the fact that he wrote this shit really shocks me. Though from what I see in interviews, a lot of his writing was altered.
I would play a Telltale game of After Earf, someone make this happen.

Wait, wait, wait. The "aliens" are still called aliens even though it's the humans who are technically the aliens on this new planet? Or did the "aliens" move to Nova Prime too because they fucked up their planet?
I appreciate your explanation. If the audience needed to read the book to fully understand the film, then I think they messed up even more than I originally thought.
Man Mexicans gotta confuse everything.
British Tea
I just wanted to say that, the fans of _"2001: A Space Odyssey"_ say that _to fully understand the film, you should read the book_.
Before you ask, Im not defending _After Earth_ nor _2001_ fans.
This is so typical of a story Shyamalan would come up with...
""ah i cant sleep.too many gravitons""
that was fucking gold
I almost feel that Will Smith is being sarcastic when he says "that's deep".
Yeah it definitely sounded like him sarcastically poking a little fun at him instead of encouraging it, which kind of made their relationship seem a little more relatable. Plus with a lot of things Will and Jaden have said more recently about that time in Jaden's life it kind of fits that narrative.
I got the opposite impression. Like Will is a yes-man encouraging Jaden's pseudo-deep garbage instead speaking to him like a real person.
He's just standing by his son. He's not going to say "yeah my son is a pretentious douchebag"
I'm just glad I wasn't born will smith's kid. What a bizarre situation to be in
Or when he went “wow”
"Will smith can't just be famous, he has to breed famous." with will smith face just made me laugh
5:17 That's the problem with school. They don' teach them how to think, they just repeat what they're being told. And I'm an ecologist, btw.
nods
Did you notice how satisfied the teacher is when they've finished? Look at your students, girl. They don't give a single shit. Motivate them, don't lecture
Didn't get it. English is not my first language. You'll have to explain it to me.
the most compelling answers/information are not taught, but discovered. education should teach the tools for understanding, not what you should be understanding.
Will and Jayden looked so dumbfounded when that girl was talking
Watching Will and Jaiden together is sick in a "using kids to profit" kind of sick. Then again maybe he believes he really is in a family business...
"Nova Solar system"
Is this movie joking?
Our system is called the solar system because the sun used to be called "Sol".
If we go to a different star, it's not the fucking Solar System. This is grade 1 shit, Shyamalamadingdong.
SHHHHHHH
DON'T TELL HIM!
+Victor Viridian I learned that from playing mass effect
better call sol
actually it's called the solar system because it's a system that orbits a sun. Sol being Latin for sun(i think). Not because our sun/star is called 'Sun'
Actually, 'Sol' is sun in Spanish.
Will: “Just based on our relationship, I know you’d give your life for me if you had to.”
I think you’ve got the roles a little reversed there, Will
