For me, a German, the way Americans see the Unimog is a huge compliment. I never saw the Unimog as I see it now. It is not just a tool. It is a fun truck.
There are oh so many accessories to increase the fun level. Like backhoes and outriggers front and back, them go four wheeling! One could scale a mountain. One german to another.
I like how the Unimog is pretty much idling over all the rocks at low rpm and some of the other rigs are red lining their motors and thrashing their differentials.
Don't forget that the Unimog has an extreme crawler gear meaning it's top speed at max rpm is 2mph. That how an old 'mog with all of 84hp can do this: ruclips.net/video/dyrfZkkpENU/видео.html
I was stationed in Germany in the 70s and the Germans had the Unimogs. They outperformed anything we had off road for their size. I been following LITE BRITE for years. Fun people. Looks like you had a good time hanging out with Kevin and risking your lives. So tell me, does he take the most impossible lines on purpose or just doesn't know any better?

Unimog, the universal mobile Gerät, ie a tool. The wheels are more a necessity to allow it to get where its on-board generator, the engine, is needed to power virtually any kind of powered tool. It's not comfortable, fast, or luxurious. But hell, it's gonna get wherever it needs to be. Eventually. Under its own power. The only terrain a unimog gets stuck in is deep swamp which reaches the portal axles. Everything else is more or less a nuisance. Greetz from a German in Hamburg.

@@overloadOverland the front looked locked and the back unlocked. (It comes to a rock and both fronts slipped at the same speed) Which is the end you need locked because it is front heavy :o) *best combo I found was locked front and open on the back with fiddle brakes. Super tight turns :D

That is quite easy in a unimog I have a 416 myself and I drive it a lot in offroad conditions as a service truck for heavy equipment had it for more than 15 years now and I have driven more than 150000 km with it . It has a hookloader and 8000 kg hydraulic winch with 75 meter cable and radio remote so it's good truck for offroad recovery .
I always found Unimogs cool little all terrain trucks. This one doesn't need its throttle pedal, that thing crawls over everything slow and easy while idling. It's made to drag agricultural equipment, military use, in construction work and is also used a lot as hi-rail vehicle in Europe too, for maintenance of way and as an industrial switcher to move railcars. It can do this because it was designed to do, hence the great power on the wheels.
The thing that makes Unimogs badass is that the axles are raised, so they sit above the center of the wheels, giving addition room below to pass obstacles.

When I was a kid, 50 years ago, had no idea what my brother and were doing was rock crawling. Had a 1960 corn-binder 4wd, 6 cylinders, tall skinny bias-plies, a high lift jack, 50 ft of chain, a shovel, and firewood for blocks…and NO ONE , or fences, for miles and miles. Encountered flash floods, crossed creeks too deep, stuck in several feet of snow and dug ourselves out many times, -15deg once. I look back and think how recklessness, it could have gone so wrong. I am fortunate to be alive. Wouldn’t trade those experiences that anything.
I actually didn’t know mogs could come without lockers, every one I’ve ever had has had front and rear lockers standard, and my current one even has the creeper gear, maybe it’s just the 416?
This is the benefits of a purpose designed vehicle. Unimogs have portal axles with gears to lift the diff casing well above the centre of the wheel. They also have a chassis which will flex, as well as centre diff locks like most 4wds plus front and rear lockers. This means or four wheels will continue turning as opposed to losing traction if two lose grip as with a centre locker
Unimogs are amazing. I've been driving a 435 special rescue fire truck version. BTW. Unimogs where not Mercedes in the beginning. Universal Motor Geraet for agricultural use, operating machinery and harvesting.

A Unimog will go where no other brand can go and he will mow the grass while doing it. This truck has it all you can even use it as a locomotive on rail road tracks. There are enough videos out there.

So the question is not whether the mog needs locks. But why this one doesn't have one. Or maybe they just didn't use them? And why don't these guys even tighten the V-belt so that the steering works again? by the way. The Unimog does not have a 4-speed gearbox but a 6-speed gearbox. 1+2 the lever has to be pushed all the way to the left against a lock. If you don't know that, you won't find the gears. They are very slow. 4-6 are normal gears. There is also a reduction gear, so you can drive extremely slowly.So not 8 but 12 gears. They drive at least 3 low. Why. And the power steering works. otherwise he could never steer like that. The V-belt only slips when things get hard. easy to repair.
