It sounded like there was some additional damage during recovery, but that's what you get when you drive in areas that your rig was never built to go. Great recovery Matt and family! Sorry you missed the birthday party.
I feel ya about trails being discovered. Riff Raff used to keep one of the best local trails accessible to only something locked, armored and on 35s until SxS tourism people came in with a backhoe and literally ruined the entry obstacle so that even stock rigs can get into trouble up above Lake Shasta... The trails have become torn up, covered in trash and now we deal with yearly washouts on once passable trails, fighting to keep people from further damaging or removing obstacles... It's horrible. Love that you made them take the original route on the way back lol

What I love is that you don't over wheel your vehicles, literally use your brake not your throttle. I've seen so many yahoo's hear in Aus literally mash throttle just making a mess. Great effort getting that through that terrain. 👍🇦🇺
Literally the first modification I did to my stock Jeep JK Wrangler (after fitting rated recovery points front & rear) was to install an aftermarket skid plate over the oil pan. Could never work out why they leave the factory with skid plates over the gas tank and transmission/transfer case but not the oil pan.
I put an aftermarket engine and transmission skid plate in my JK because I knew I wouldn't be turning it into a brodozer and want to ensure things were protected off road.
I think the lift and wheel/tire combo are much more important. The skid plates are nice for peace of mind, especially for newbies, but having good clearance is a necessity.
@@scottmichaels12 I don't disagree that good clearance is a necessity. I'd say that the more lifted the vehicle, the more extreme obstacles it is meant to try, so skid plates are still just as important.
@@JamesSmith-uc8tk Yep, same reason I did the skids first. I knew what I'd be using it for and didn't need a life & 40" tyres for the trails I'd be running on right then, but have seen enough holes punched in oil pans by errant rocks to know that skids are cheap insurance (and a lot cheaper than the many thousands I'd spend on wheels, tyres and suspension parts I didn't really need at the time).

What a trooper in her Sunday sandals. I’ve lost count of the last minute rescues she has gone on with the wrong footwear 😢.
It's not just the sandals but the dress. Jamie should have been given time to change clothes (unless this is all preset drama) to get reactions. Not the first time this has happened to not just Jamie but to other women.
Back in 2015 I bought my Jeep on Saturday and was on the Rubicon Trail on Sunday. Wanted to test its capabilities before upgrading everything. That’s my answer to your question “why”.
People seem to have forgotten that "off road transport" was meant to be able to travel through unfavourable territory. NOT to travel through the worst, most difficult, parts of it ! (and screw them up !).
Totally agree on the side by side issue, and another thing..... Why is it that most newby wheelers jump straight in with buying 37-40" tires, and all the other stuff that "serious" trails "Require", and they never really learn how to drive. I consider this trail to be intermediate, I drove it on 7.50-16 bias plys, not taking bypasses. I had a ton of fun on Papa Smurf this year in the same rig, and everyone other than our little group was on 37-40" tires, looking at our little rigs like we shouldn't be there. HaHa, we had less trouble than most of them getting up the obstacles. People are sooo into over building / over speccing their rigs these days, and not learning how to drive..... Over built rigs with under skilled drivers are a real issue these days.
I'm pretty sure the issue is that the hobby is literally based around destroying and polluting the environment, you sound like you have an intellectual disability.
Those side by sides just destroy trails. A combination of high speeds, smooth brain drivers, and an army of them. They're the trail equivalent of termites. You go off trail for an emergency. Nothing else. Recovering a trashed vehicle is not an emergency. Kudos to your speech about stay the trail.
Admittedly, I know very little about Jeeps, so I assumed the Rubicon variant - with all of the off road capabilities it boasts - would come with skid plates.
Not sure the deal on that "rubicon" as it's got the XR flares but looks like it's on the 32's. The stock skids from Jeep absolutely suck. They protect the transfer case a little bit. First thing to do is get real skids on it. My jeep and sxs would do that trail no problem, and both are "stockish".
Kudos to you too, Matt, for not going the easy route in recovering stranded vehicles. They shouldn’t be there in the first place, and the damage incurred would have been, if they’d tried to rescue themselves, without you.
To be fair the Jeep is doing as much damage as any side by side. It's just doing damage in an area that was already damaged. They can't expect everyone to make a custom built rig to play on public lands.
Love your channel family and how you all work together. What I don’t get is Jeep owners. I think they watch to many Jeep commercials on TV and get lied to at the dealership. They have to be modified bar none. They go on their dream trip then get stuck or destroy their new Jeep. I from Michigan and pulled out several Jeeps. I just didn’t have any T-Shirts to give them. I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado that’s been redone 👍 Be safe out there ❤️
I was in a 4x4 club in Colorado, still live there. The formula seemed to be. Get a Jeep Rubicon; lift it, bigger tires, aftermarket steel bumpers front and rear, and a winch. That is what I did. My 2011 4 door is going good, works great on trails and gets me around in deep snow. Love it.

I've watched this channel for a long time now and it's always entertaining. I live in rural NV and completely share the dislike of side by sides and generally the SXS crowd because of exactly what Matt talks about in this channel. Can't take the normal route? The idiots make a new trail. Most also have zero trail etiquette (litter, don't slow when passing, go off track whenever they please).
JB WELD!!! And put oil back in it!!!! and drive it out. Trail Mater did this on a jeep. Drain oil or whats left, clean outside area with break cleaner. Mix some JB metal weld epoxy, and put on the pan oil leak. wait 10 min, put oil back in motor, and drive it out!
Problem is that Jeep couldn't drive off the trail the proper way even if it was running hence the speech about morons that go off-trail like this guy did
JB weld Steelstik is the product I would recommend. Take a Dremel with an acorn shaped burr. Grind back the crack to clean up up. Scuff the area with 80 grit paper then push the putty in there hard.
@@GregoryVeizades This is for the trail fix, not for the home fix. Doubt anyone's got a grinder on hand in the middle of nowhere let alone on... a rubicon.
I keep a roll of aluminium tape on hand, 1 minute resin for concrete bolts and some wipes. Between the resin and the aluminium tape (the good stuff) you can fix just about everything that can be fixed on a trail. You mix the resin in your hands, poke it through the cracks, put the tape on top after you clean up the adjacent area of dirt or oil or whatever and in a few minutes you can pour new oil in. This also works for exhaust leaks, fuel and other things where JB would have to be specialized. Resin don't care, it hardens into a concrete like plug. Just... uh don't drop it into your eyes. It ain't pretty.
Honest question: I get that off-road recovery isn't anywhere near straight-forward but I assume that you have clients sign a contract that says "In the process of recovering your vehicle we are going to bang up your vehicle even more than it already is. Its the nature of the beast with the difficult terrain of these trails." or something along those lines. I get that these vehicles are expected to take cosmetic damage going off-roading but every additional bang and scratch had me wincing especially considering that Jeep was clearly not a purpose built off-road vehicle despite what Jeep advertises. At the end of the day, if you don't want to accept that its going to get banged up during the recovery you're free to wait around for a recovery vehicle that can get it out of there without further damage. You'll either be waiting for a hell of a long time or paying a arm and a leg for the luxury though.
Best Example for what the name Jeep stands for. In Germany we say 'J eder - E insatz - E in - P roblem'. What means 'every mission one problem. Anyway, good job from you guys. Youre blessed with these surroundings
I fully agree with you Matt. You stay on trail no matter what. Only exceptions is a bad medical emergency and that is it. If you can't do the obstacles then stay off the trail.
This is no more principled than any other hipster. Don't get me wrong: I don't have skin in this game. But not taking a busted vehicle back onto the road for no other reason than so no one is traveling onto the road for precisely one trip with three vehicles -- and thereby breakup a customer's truck worse -- isn't principled. What they did is harder on the environment, harder on the obstacles, a waste of time, and cost the customer money.

OH MY GOD this is so relatable. I'm a mountain biker and I've been riding the same trails for 30 plus years. I make posts on the internet about how we should all close the bypasses aka cheat lines around obstacles and half the internet freaks out that I should "mind my business" and people should "ride wherever they want". They haven't been at this for decades, they don't see what way the trails have gotten blown out over time. They need to be educated but they'd rather just tear things up making singletrack into fireroad. It is so frustrating.
There needs to be a ranger at every trail, it pissed me off to see people doing dumb stunts, people taking their dogs past no pets signs on alpine tundra trails, letting their kids run across pristine landscape off the trails…. Killing the very thing that took hundreds of years to grow.

Off road means off a prepared surface. Off the off the concrete or tired surfaces. Or in the case of country roads off the graded gravel or dirt roads.
Offroad means "off prepared, like graded and/or graveled. If it has ever been graded, it's on-road. Off-pavement does not = offroad. Car advertising people need to learn about that.

We just had a pickup flip over, because people go speeding..." Hey mister "ranger," don't go judging my driving, my experience, and my sensibility, by what I'm driving. Or by what foolish things other drivers do. I asked you about the ROAD. It was mentioned that it was a County road, so one might assume it was maintained. But we were looking to take it as the way home, rather than backtracking on the asphalt road that ended at the visitor center. The dirt road is too long of a road to take part way down, only to discover there's been a washout or something, and have to backtrack even further. I want to go sightseeing, not have a misadventure. It's true car companies are just trying to sell product, and will tell you anything, with a footnote in the fine print at the bottom. But rangers and local officials should be helping people make smart decisions. Even paved roads become undriveable sometimes. one of the first mods i did to my 2022 tacoma was skid plates front to back. Engine, transmission and transfer case, gas tank, and rear diff skids. second mod was rock sliders. If you ever had a spot open for a tow truck driver with 32 years experience, I'd be happy to come out and work with you anytime. You and your crew are awesome. Also being such a smart engineer, I love it when you admit when you're wrong or have made a mistake, that deserves respect.

Literally the first modification I did to my stock Jeep JK Wrangler (after fitting rated recovery points front & rear) was to install an aftermarket skid plate over the oil pan. Could never work out why they leave the factory with skid plates over the gas tank and transmission/transfer case but not the oil pan.
No one I jeep with has that. Bigger tires and a lift kit, as well as some awareness of your surroundings goes a long way.
Kudos to young Carter. That was a difficult, and technical recovery, and he nailed it. Diving off-road must be in the Wetzel family DNA.
Seems like the driver of the jeep has some mad skills to have gotten that jeep that far off road. I'm amazed.

Come on people STAY ON THE TRAIL! Going off of them is what is getting trails shut down by the parks service. Good job Matts A Crew getting him out of there!
I used to have a ton of fun taking my Avalanche on the ton of local trails we used to have, people being insanely disrespectful got them all closed down by the park service and she became a pavement princess, so I ended up having to suck it up and sell it years ago. People doing stuff like taking trucks down the ATV/bike only trails instead of the very clearly marked truck trails, leaving huge messes, just all the general "people are the worst" type stuff. Ruined it for all of us!

A Jayme will do what a Jayme will do.
Why would anyone take a new stock jeep down a trail like that is beyond my comprehension. Well done Matt and crew!
Because Mr Murphy exists.
Back in 2015 I bought my Jeep on Saturday and was on the Rubicon Trail on Sunday. Wanted to test its capabilities before upgrading everything. That’s my answer to your question “why”.
@TheHappinessOfThePursuitHow on earth would you know anyone's vaccination status? 😂
A lot of stock car trail recoveries are due to tourists with rentals following the GPS.
The entire point of the hobby is to destroy nature with polluting heavy equipment, what are you going on about?
You should see where the Curries take their sxs, they go off trail to make new even harder options. We have taken sxs where 90% of jeeps can’t.
Off road vehicles have skid plates for just this reason. I love that recovery vehicle.
Seems like it would have been faster to just slap a new oil pan on
Admittedly, I know very little about Jeeps, so I assumed the Rubicon variant - with all of the off road capabilities it boasts - would come with skid plates.
@@msalazar37 nope. only skid plate on the wrangler is the gas tank.
I never understood Jeep's thinking. They have skid plates for the transfer, gas tank but miss the oil pan
Kudos to you too, Matt, for not going the easy route in recovering stranded vehicles. They shouldn’t be there in the first place, and the damage incurred would have been, if they’d tried to rescue themselves, without you.
That last line was definitely from the heart. "If you went off trail to get to where you are, I WILL recover you on trail." hahahaha
What a diplomatic way to say "Stay on the trail".

Matt is the man and I’m 100% convinced that there is nothing he can’t recover. And raised great sons. And just all around great family 👍
Who cares
Do not change! You are correct about staying on trail.
Good job Morr family, you are right to be upset with these people who don't care about this beautiful country we live in. Just stay on the trail.

What we need to do is ban shuttles
There needs to be a ranger at every trail, it pissed me off to see people doing dumb stunts, people taking their dogs past no pets signs on alpine tundra trails, letting their kids run across pristine landscape off the trails…. Killing the very thing that took hundreds of years to grow.

It is an off road vehicle, it's just not a no road vehicle.
There's a difference!

We have a Subaru Forester now, and it's laughable how they tout its rugged capabilities, especially the pricey "Wilderness" edition. I know to laugh, after watching Matt's videos. one of the first mods i did to my 2022 tacoma was skid plates front to back. Engine, transmission and transfer case, gas tank, and rear diff skids. second mod was rock sliders.
