    chaining up an unimog reminds me of my time in the german army. on the drivers training going round and round on the bergen training area. chains on, chains off, passenger in the turret on the mg3, keep your distance, chains on, a little ambush, heater knows only yes or no, chains off, microsleep every now and then behind the wheel... good times.

    well, Unimog, it's not just have high power, The Unimog's characteristic design element is its chassis :- a flexible ladder frame with short overhangs, and coil sprung beam portal axles with a central torque tube and transverse links. Having portal axles, the tyres' centres are below the axle centre, which gives the Unimog a high ground clearance without big tyres. The coil sprung axles with torque tubes allow an axle angle offset of up to 30°, giving the tyres a wide range of vertical movement to allow the truck to comfortably drive over extremely uneven terrain, even boulders of one metre in height.💪

In norther winter Ontario and Quebec it's the only way to get through one metre snow drifts and the wet heavy lake effect fresh snow. That's how it was designed; A " *_UNI_*versal - *_MO_*tor - *_G_*erät" (Universal Motor (Powered) Device). Right after WW II, mainly farmers needed a reliable and cheap tractor-like vehicle with 'Swiss Army Knife' capabilities. That's why it had portal-axles (to effectively utilize smaller diameter (and cheaper) wheels and tires), one or more PTO points, and hydraulic connections.
    The gear reduction at the wheels (portal-axle) allowed small powered engines deliver lots of power to the wheels without much stress on the drive shafts, a huge benefit in cost reduction at the time.
    It was (and still is) the 'mountain goat' of 'normal' vehicles.

    I've always wondered how well an LMTV would do against a Unimog. I think the Uni could take it in most conditions (and even with less HP it's definitely faster) but I had some good times in LMTVs. I hated how skinny (and top heavy) they were but they'd fit down some really tight trails.

    • @thebigmacd
      @thebigmacd 3 года назад +2

      Without the portal axles and flexy chassis I'd say the Mog would walk it. As far as durability...they are both Steyr designs.

      How about the old 5 tons?

    • @SkyFoxMarine
      @SkyFoxMarine 2 года назад

      @@MrPAULONEAL Depends on the model. The single axle version with the Air Lockers is decent off-road it you have something heavy mounted in the back, and they're great because literally everything uses the same motor oil for both lubrication and hydraulics (power steering pump included). The pneumatic winch never fails, and the bumper it's mounted to could take out a brick wall lol. But the LMTV has air suspension, central tire inflation, cab over design (way more maneuverable), better (and taller) tires, weighs a bit less, and has way more power (though the 5-ton can be had with a low range and a manual with a ridiculously low first gear). Going flat out in sand and dirt roads, LMTV rides surprisingly well for being a big vehicle with solid axles front and rear. Those axles also have better articulation and more travel; jumping an LMTV (within reason) feels like landing on a pillow (though the M-ATV is still the best big vehicle to catch air in that I've ever driven; independent suspension front and rear). The tire inflation system really comes in handy when going off-road with such a large vehicle. The LMTV will also fit down the same width trails as a HMMWV, but that lack of width (relative to it's height) makes off-camber situations a bit tricky, even with the engine being mounted lower and further back in the chassis; the 5-ton feels rock solid in comparison. The 5-ton is a great workhorse that's almost impossible to kill, but while it can go off-road, deep sand is about as extreme as I'd recommend. The Air Lockers are pretty much a requirement because the huge stack of leaf springs ensures minimal articulation, it rides like you're sitting on a cinder block tied to a pissed off bull, and anything with an incline will make it struggle. It'll get you to where you gotta go...eventually...is stupid easy to fix, and stupid fun to drive just because; but it sits between a fully up-armored HMMWV and the MRAP as the three worst military vehicles for going off-road. This is of course, my opinion; other's mileage may vary.
