- Covering off some of the challenging weedy grasses and sedge today:
Crabgrass, Dallisgrass, Nutsedge, Poa. Weed ID is important and getting the right control, doubly so.

Nutsedge is not a grass, it is it's own class that is often confused with grasses. Dallisgrass and Crabgrass are often confused with each other and require different treatments to control. This will help give you the Best Crabgrass and Grassy Weed control options

Other products mentioned are Quincept, Q-ball, Prodiamine, MSMA, Dicamba, Manuscript (by syngenta) to name a few.

If it isn't Late May or June or really hot for a while, it probably isn't crabgrass and you are dealing with something else unless you live in the extreme southern US. Warm soil and air temps are needed as well as a space for the grass to thrive.
Killing crabgrass is typically a multi-app or a higher labelled app rate and those must be followed. Repairing the area with a patch filler like TurfMend is a great option to get grass growing and covering the area.

Disappointed that I missed the premiere. Excellent video! Quackgrass has turned its head to my lawn, fortunately I haven’t had too many weeds, some clover, but much better than years past. I personally liked something that Lawncreeps said, if your weeds are at such a minimal level that you can hand pull, or they aren’t noticeable to other people, don’t put the chemicals in the soil. Save them for when you really need them.
Regular mowing and occasional pulling can do wonders for lowering weed propagation.
That pesky quack grass! It’s killing me this year!
I spray daliss grass with glyphosate, it's usually so easy to drip down the big leaves. If I see it small, I pull it. I like to walk the yard before a mow, pull weeds then mulch them into the yard.

Another way to know the difference between dallis grass and crab grass is to compare the seed stalks. Dallis grass will have 2 3 or 4 thick stalks that grow horizontal where crabgrass will have 4 or 5 tiny stalks that fan out and face the sun.
Another thing to consider with herbicides is the temperature; some herbicides will damage desirable grass when used at temperatures above the maximum recommended temperature.
At this time of year, I am seeing dallis grass and crab grass. When I use a weeding tool to remove them, I find that I am hitting fist sized rocks and bricks that were not removed by the landscaper that the home builder used. So digging up more than just the weeds becomes necessary. And don’t let those weeds produce seed, even if you have to just pull the seed blades off rather than dig up the entire weed; that seed will come back to haunt you in the future, after the parent weed is gone.

@@Lawncology Yes, 19,00SF of an acre and a half is St Augustine on a 3 year old new home build that I have to cut with a push mower twice a week, and treat a couple times a month in the Houston area humidity. Also once a month applying the N-Ext products. Fungus loves the morning dew, rain, heat and humidity here, so I'm always chasing that as well. I've spent over $1800 so far on fungus control with Heritage G, and last week, the Scott's/Bioadvanced combo I put down the second app to continually chase dissapearing patches with the 11/3 fungicide double shot and it's only May! I've been using your products since their inception and I love them. They work great, when my grass and clay soil decides to play along that is. Let's just say that spraying all that with a hose definitely provides a workout. I wish I could use my back pack sprayers instead and get the same dilution rate with water to make it easier. But finding the right tip for your products has been a chore. There's one back corner that I get about 15 spots of giant crabgrass/dallisgrass the size of a basketball by February every year. So last week I hit them with a dose of Pennant Magnum and blindside and zapped em good. They have shown some fresh stragglers along the outside since, so I need to keep on them. It's basically my second full time job working on this yard like Mr. "Throw er down!" does for a living, but I love the outdoors and the workout. My wife came down with breast cancer in March, so with having to help her a lot more to get through it, I'm trying to slip the yard treatment in when I can now. I just love being outside and doing yard work, and following you and the the "gang" religiously for over 3 years now, and wish I could do more! Keep doing the great work with everything you do for us DIY'ers! Sorry for the novel!

I renovated my lawn two years ago and it’s been doing great but at the beginning of summer I started getting Dallas’s grass now it’s all over the place and I can’t find a solution for it

St Aug w/ dallisgrass in north tx: I had tons of dallisgrass last year. One celcius liquid treatment September 1, follow up treatment october 1, knocked it out. Didnt add revolver because of price. Celcius worked great.
Loved the video. Appreciate the help. Look forward to seeing some more. Really interested in pre- emergent timing In the Southeastern US zones. Also, some recommendations if possible. I just moved here and have 3 acres that’s full of weeds. Been working it like crazy and the Bermuda is spreading, but it’s taking forever. Still have a lot of weeds and the battle seems never ending. By the way, I went to VA Tech and I didn’t even know about that site. I’ll go to it regularly. Thanks
I had to go way above label rate with Bendaknees and OneGlove last season in order to finally get my Dallisgrass problem under control. :(

Two years ago crabgrass went nuts here in Nebraska. Last year it was volunteer trees. This year Poa Annua is OFF THE CHARTS!!! What's it going to be next year???

ANUEW WORKS AWESOME! However on a side note John, I mixed some fungicide and DeThatch together with some O2YS and the O2YS requires the Ph below 5.0, I used Citric Acid to drop the Ph. Now my question is will the Citric acid stop the yeast and molasses in the Dethatch? I had some Redthread pop up and I'm trying to grow it out before the heat hits here in VA.

Cheatgrass! That’s probably what I have popping up a lot around here lately in SE WI! That looks kind of similar to quack grass just a lighter color. I have quack popping up all over again after I nuked it last year. Idk what else to do with the stuff other than trying to mow it out. Hopefully the kbg will push it out. The lawn is looking healthier than ever this year which is great. Trying to make my soil right 💪. But man, quack grass is the frickin worst.

I'm getting ready to being in a bunch of top soil for my front yard. Will I need to kill off the dallisgrass and the rest of the grass beforehand? Alot of areas are gonna be at least 2"+ deep with topsoil

What about Dallis grass? In fescue seems Pylex was the only option but you need to take out a small loan to purchase it. Some mention Tenacity but the jury's out. You mentioned Manuscript and Certainty (teed?) but can you use in Fescue?
Yes on certainty but it’s suppression similar to tenacity. Multiple follow ups.

I have a question, I've heard of this Anuew product and I have a small crop of Poa Annua in my front yard, I would like to know if Anuew is applied will that help reduce the Poa enough to where the TTTF/ Bluegrass is permitted to take over? Thank you!!!
I’m trying to eliminate the St. Augustine grass from my yard without killing the existing Bermuda and Fescue. If it was just Bermuda I could glyphosate the grass after the freeze makes the Bermuda go dormant. Being in north Texas the fescue doesn’t go dormant so glyphosate is out. Any ideas? I’m purposefully mowing at 1” to 1 1/2” to discourage the St. Augustine’s growth. I’m also using pre-emergents not recommended for St. Augustine lawns. The smaller sections of my lawn I just manually eliminated it and reseeded. I just don’t want to start from scratch on a 5,000 sq. ft.
If you are going after removing only the St. Augustine grass look at using Q-Ball (Quinclorac). If you have other broadleaf weeds use Quincept. My next choice would be 4-Speed XT. Other herbicides that will be harsh on the St. Augustine grass include Escalade, Horse Power, Cool Power, and Triplet (low cost!). All of these are labeled for use in bermuda lawns.

Sure Power is very harsh on bent grass. Kill all your broadleaf weeds (including wild violets and ground ivy), yellow nutsedge, small crabgrass, and hit bent all in one go.
Best product to kill purple Nutsedge?
Halosulfuron: Sedgehammer or Halo
Halosulfuron is a good option (ProSedge is Nufarm's) but I would recommend Celero as my favorite option. Certainty in warm season turf is going to be very strong.

Have you ever found any solutions for Quackgrass in Cool Season grass other than Glyphosate?
Not really. I have a guy mowing short and cooking it out, he’s been documenting it. Thought it was close to 50% knocked back after about 4 weeks

You can buy it, but it’s not labeled for residential use. Who watches to see what your spaying on your lawn anyway?

For warm season turf Certainty works well. Be patient as it can take a week or more before seeing it turning brown.

PASPALUM DILIATATUM!!!!!! Flash back from Dr. Goately's weed identification class my sophmore year of college!!!!! Walking around campus and stopping every 5 minutes or so, what is this, pre emergent and post emergent recomendations, and spelling of latin name counted. Litterally the only C I made while majoring in Sports Turf Management at Mississippi State University but by far the most retention of information I have. Most difficult part is I am color blind so some very tiny details of a few similar weeds were dificult for me to identify and why I have assistant superintendents today, that and the latin spelling is what always screwed me on the exams. Dr. Goately is now at University of Kentucky.
That’s awesome. Yeah, when people see Latin names they realize relationships to improved turf varieties. I think it’s good for people to know.
@@Lawncology Fast forward a couple of decades I was the grow in superindendent and then remained superintendent at the first golf course in the world that was tee to green paspalum grass (we used seashore paspalum) and that was also irrigated with a combo of about 30% potable fresh water (no ground water on the site and we had to tap into the develpment's water delivery pipeline for residental, commercial, and resorts) 30% salt water and 40% gray water (all recovered and processed waste water was pumped into various irrigaiton systems of the comon green areas of the development, resort grounds, and pumped into ponds on the golf course. All ponds were plastic lined and underwater agitators along with fountains keep the three waters mixed as they are diferent densities. Was an awesome experiment..... I can promise you this.... There is no way in this lifetime that Connor Ward or Ryan Knorr can get even close to the stripes we had on that golf course! Not even 1% close!
Toward the end, Rod mentioned something that would help suppress QUACKGRASS. Can you provide that name for me.
Certainty. Don't use in fescue or rye. It's used to kill both fescue or rye. Primarily a warm season turf product. Used to be labeled in KBG. Also used in beds for over the top weed control.

John this is my first year I’ve put down prodiamine last fall and I put some down March 1st. I’m seeing some crabgrass popping up. Very disappointed as I followed the label. Would you say I applied too late, or miscalculation/mistake? Or the ground just used it up from more rain?Middle Tennessee here. Thanks
It’s not failsafe, timing and water are the two biggest factors
Don’t feel bad. I put some down the last week of January, and my lawn is in rough shape. I’m convinced that mine has outlived it’s shelf life.
