Eat Your Weeds... A History of Crabgrass

- Today’s video we are going to be talking all about crabgrass. This is going to be a little different than any other video you may have seen on crabgrass. I’m going to be taking you through the history of the plant, how it came to be here, what it was originally used for, and what can be used for today. The concept of eating your weeds isn't new, this is just one that isn't spoken about much.
I think it’s really important for people to know and understand the enemy in their lawn. Now, I say enemy only because people see this plant at such a terrible infestation on their greenspace. The reality is, crabgrass does not in and of itself make your lawn unhealthy. It is merely a symptom of poor practices or less than satisfactory habits.
This video does not cover off the used to pre-emergent herbicide or post emergent herbicide, I do briefly touch on cultural practices on how to minimize the effects of crabgrass on your lawn, but if you were looking for a how-to video on using herbicides to control crabgrass, this is not the one for you.
Instead, I’d like you to have the opportunity to learn a little bit more about this plant. Once you begin to understand where it came from, how it has been used around the world, then you can truly know the best way to control it, adjust your practices properly, and also develop and respect for plant that we have classified as a weed…. but it’s so much more than just a nuisance.
The historical portion and the stories behind it and at around the 10 minute mark. Beyond that, are you some of the crab grass seed called Fonio, to make a meal in my kitchen. I decided to do a very nontraditional poke bowl and use the Fonio as you would rice. There are directions and ingredients on screen if you choose to create your own Poke bowl at home. For those of you with intolerances, this is a gluten free grain. Does crabgrass fit into the "grow food not lawns" picture?

“If you are unfamiliar with crab grass, good for you.” 😂. Always love the morning videos ☕️
It’s true 😂😂
Gluten free edible grain that needs no fertilizer, grows prolifically & thrives heat sounds like something we should start rethinking crabgrass. Wheat farmers just lost their crops to heat.
yeah.
but its a "weed", so that means its automatically just something to kill and get rid of no matter the uses.
same with a lot of edible plants, if there isn't big money to be made its looked down on and not eaten.
amazing content. the recipe was an excellent touch.
Thanks John for another great video, Cheers
Wow 🤩 🤯 Great video! Great info!!

Why watch the Food Network when I can watch Lawncology. Weeds, Fertilizers, Mountain Views, Coffee and Food. Its a One Stop Shop on this channel ✊🏾✊🏾
I learned something new. Can I go home now?
Well heck, free food! So much for the pre-emergents
Why did I not only choose to watch an educational video about crabgrass, but actually enjoy the watch as well?
Chase Petersen that’s awesome. Thank you
Good morning from Southern Indiana!
Good morning!
Your talent is endless I was a chef for most of my life gave me a nice flashback to my younger days 👏👏👏👏👊
Thank you Marshall!!
Very Beatniky, finger snaps to you. Has anybody tried drying it and smoking it?

Glad you commented on some topics I failed to touch on years ago, thanks buddy.
Coffee- History Lesson & Cooking Class on a Friday Morning 👍 Great way to start the day. Great video!! Love the channel.....
Greenhorn CT thank you!
Want to buy crabgrass in Northern va to make my lawn tuff
Crabgrass is the devil, although the infestation i had 2 years ago forced me to completely renovate my lawn. I started digging up the lawn and couldn't believe how many rocks, stones and how completely compact the clay soil i had was.
First I killed it with Tenacity which lit up my yard, then dug out the mature plants and then reseeded. This past spring used prodiamine and the product was incredible as saw no plants this past summer (knock on wood).
In the kitchen with John!
LOVE....LOVE YOUR COFFEE MUG!!!!!!!!!! Plethora, is a big word for that early in morning! Great video...keep up the good work.
Lol. Thank you 😁
My crabgrass grew on top of my prodiamine layer. I could literally pull the plant up with little to no effort, and I’m not exaggerating, the plant was floating on the top of the soil like a lily pad.
The roots were clubbed as prodiamine does, but the plant was pulling nutrients from the soil surface and the sun. If that isn’t impressive I don’t know what is. Also, I won the war, I have zero crabgrass right now. :-)
Brodey Dover that’s amazing!
Our areas are along edges of parking lots and sidewalks after winter with all the salt sitting on the lawn all winter. Nice knife skills by rhe way
It loves those spots where nothing else wants to grow. Thank you btw
I need an update in a week: Did the spilled fonio star growing where your cabinets meet your floors?
Nice video JP. Very informative.
I wonder what Doveweed tastes like 🤔
It tastes like bald eagle I think 😉😂
You take requests? History of Bermuda? It’s only the most awesomest alpha T-Rex grass. If so, thanks in advance!
Woah
That poke bowl looks amazing! You strike me as a guy who's worked in restaurants.
Lol. Never been in that industry. I just love to cook and eat good food.
Well that dish looks amazing! Next time on cooking with John Perry. Could be a Series of Winter videos. Just an idea.
So do you recommend prodiamine? Sorry I couldn’t resist. ❤️
BermudaLawnNC it’s works for the most part. Won’t get everything, but it will help. I like the 4L rather than the powder
Lawncology thanks for expert advice I was just being a jerk. ❤️ I did Dythiopyr for winter and plan to spray Prodiamine in the spring.
BermudaLawnNC lol. Good plan
May just catch a salmon this wkend and try this! Thanks mate great content this, fancy cutlery skills i say! Cheers!
Ciaran O' Malley get on it!!
Learning with JP in the lawn, and then cooking in the kitchen. Is there a Lawncology cookbook coming?
Lol. Probably not. That would be fun though
I see another RUclips channel in your future! Cooking with John, or, Cookology? Lol Great video as always!
Ohh this will be a good one. I thought 🦀 grass is already scary enough and then you go make this scary lighting video.
Lol. You won’t find it scary after this
Love the video still hate crab grass 😆
No reason to fall in love with it! Nuisance and eyesore for sure, indicator of needed change, definitely.
You could start a whole new channel. Cooking with lawn weeds.
Cole Spolaric lol. Who needs a garden when you can’t take care of a lawn? 😂
First Aussie 😁
Hopefully, you didn't touch your face/eyes after handling that raw jalapeño! Poké is pretty popular in Hawaii as well.
JStarke240 best I ever had was on the North Shore... and no, I’m pretty good about keeping my hands off my face 😂
I noticed you did cook the salmon at all. I usually grill mine. Do you think this would upset the dish due to the smokiness of the fish (sorry...no rhyme intended)? :-)
K McClanahan no not at all. I think that you’d creat a different flavor for sure, but it would add to dish if you built around that smokiness
safe to assume the children did not partake in the consumption of the Poke bowl
Brent Colby safe assumption indeed
Coffee and John.. Always a great way to start a Friday morning. Loving the Peter McKinnon look. 👍 Really cool information. Too bad I'm not much of a cook.😂
Thanks Nate. You don’t have to be able to make it to enjoy it 😉
@@Lawncology unfortunately my wife is even worse at cooking than I am.... I may give it a try sometime though.
Good Morning
Friday
Morning Coffee with John .
I’m up late. Need to get some hot bean water going!
