Eat Your Weeds... A History of Crabgrass

  • Today’s video we are going to be talking all about crabgrass. This is going to be a little different than any other video you may have seen on crabgrass. I’m going to be taking you through the history of the plant, how it came to be here, what it was originally used for, and what can be used for today. The concept of eating your weeds isn't new, this is just one that isn't spoken about much.
    I think it’s really important for people to know and understand the enemy in their lawn. Now, I say enemy only because people see this plant at such a terrible infestation on their greenspace. The reality is, crabgrass does not in and of itself make your lawn unhealthy. It is merely a symptom of poor practices or less than satisfactory habits.
    This video does not cover off the used to pre-emergent herbicide or post emergent herbicide, I do briefly touch on cultural practices on how to minimize the effects of crabgrass on your lawn, but if you were looking for a how-to video on using herbicides to control crabgrass, this is not the one for you.
    Instead, I’d like you to have the opportunity to learn a little bit more about this plant. Once you begin to understand where it came from, how it has been used around the world, then you can truly know the best way to control it, adjust your practices properly, and also develop and respect for plant that we have classified as a weed…. but it’s so much more than just a nuisance.
    The historical portion and the stories behind it and at around the 10 minute mark. Beyond that, are you some of the crab grass seed called Fonio, to make a meal in my kitchen. I decided to do a very nontraditional poke bowl and use the Fonio as you would rice. There are directions and ingredients on screen if you choose to create your own Poke bowl at home. For those of you with intolerances, this is a gluten free grain. Does crabgrass fit into the "grow food not lawns" picture?

    Gluten free edible grain that needs no fertilizer, grows prolifically & thrives heat sounds like something we should start rethinking crabgrass. Wheat farmers just lost their crops to heat.

    • @krazyfan1489
      @krazyfan1489 Год назад

      yeah.
      but its a "weed", so that means its automatically just something to kill and get rid of no matter the uses.
      same with a lot of edible plants, if there isn't big money to be made its looked down on and not eaten.

  • @jaredgmetz

    Crabgrass is the devil, although the infestation i had 2 years ago forced me to completely renovate my lawn. I started digging up the lawn and couldn't believe how many rocks, stones and how completely compact the clay soil i had was.
    First I killed it with Tenacity which lit up my yard, then dug out the mature plants and then reseeded. This past spring used prodiamine and the product was incredible as saw no plants this past summer (knock on wood).

    My crabgrass grew on top of my prodiamine layer. I could literally pull the plant up with little to no effort, and I’m not exaggerating, the plant was floating on the top of the soil like a lily pad.
    The roots were clubbed as prodiamine does, but the plant was pulling nutrients from the soil surface and the sun. If that isn’t impressive I don’t know what is. Also, I won the war, I have zero crabgrass right now. :-)
