Come for the metal...stay for the history. Up the irons!!
This song is talking about the futile heroism of a British soldier during the Charge of the Light Brigade, a light infantry manoeuvre during the Battle of Balaclava (1854) which was a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson which was written 6 weeks after the event.
Cavalry.
The light brigade was a cavalry formation.
@@rogerhack3750 Thank you; I was just about to say this, lol-and to add, ‘…As evidenced by all the horses.’
Exactly
All due to misunderstanding between two comanders if I'm not wrong...
@@XaviClot Some historians say it was for rivalry between the commanders
The song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War. One of my favorite songs!!
You MUST see these guys in a concert! One of the best experiences ever!
Just saw them in Austin.. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mine too
Just saw them in Spokane. Still kicking ass.
First time I saw them was 86
Ty for that Pce of history👍
I’m so happy I grew up in the 80’s. This stuff just kept coming throughout the whole decade.
Maiden put a lot of historical references in their lyrics. Amazing musicians and song writers.
Up the Irons
@@jayspears7245 🤘🎼 Yes!!!
There was a guy on the Howard Stern show that said he wore adult diapers to Iron Maiden concerts, because the had no "bathroom break" songs in their set. But those diapers are made for a little leakage not 7 or 8 beers....
@@pulsarlights2825 that was Richard Christy
It absolutely warms my heart to see the younger generation listening to the music I grew up with and rocking out to it just like I did back in the 80s
To add a bit of context this song is a about the famous and tragic charge of the light brigade at the battle of balaclava during the Crimean war in the 1850s. Mainly Britain and France against Russia. Orders ended up getting miss understood so the light cavalry charged the Russian heavy cannons head on. Not many survived the battle. The music video show extracts from the famous poem charge of the light brigade. If you want a modern band with music as well researched as this I highly recommend checking out Sabaton.
My understanding is that the charge itself was a success and they captured the Russian artillery but their maneuver was not communicated to other battalions so there was no infantry to screen them from the Russian counterattack which followed.
The cannons iron is still used to produce the Victoria Cross to this day.
@@MrGunBunny13 The charge was a complete disaster. They charged the wrong guns. They didn't capture the guns. They lost half their number, and the worst of all, in their retreat they had to be saved by the French! The next day at muster they had roughly 250 men and 17 horses fit for any military duty. All because the three commanders involved absolutely hated each other...
Might be time for someone to write a song about the subsequent charge of The Heavy Brigade that went somewhat better.
Russia never was ez. OTAN shold learn that Russia is expensive.
@@alexandrecerqueira3023 Russia should learn that Ukraine is a sovereign nation.
This in my top 3 of Maiden!!! So excited to see you checking this out.
To answer to your question about the war - it's based on tales from the Crimean War.
Here's what Wikipedia says in the opening paragraph of that war:
"The Crimean War was fought from October 1853 to February 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom and Piedmont-Sardinia. The immediate cause of the war involved the rights of Christian minorities in Palestine (then part of the Ottoman Empire) with the French promoting the rights of Roman Catholics, and Russia promoting those of the Eastern Orthodox Church."
MOST of Maiden's songs are about historical, biblical, or mythological/folklore stories.
Sabaton - They are a heavy metal band that sings about significant historical wartime events. Lead singer's voice is insanely good and they always try to tell the story from a somewhat neutral perspective. Some of the videos have incredible and expensive cinematography and acting. "Attack of the Dead Men", would be a good place to start. It's about Russian vs. German forces during World War One and how deadly chemical weapons changed the battlefield.
I came here to suggest them. I see you beat me to it :) The Christmas Truce is powerful
@@jauntx Yeah, me too. I have always been Maiden fan, but now I am Sabaton fan as well.
Just came to check this was here... AND THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!
Bruce Dickinson
I believe he's singing about the Crimean War. Every Iron Maiden song is a history lesson set to metal music.
Sorry, but not "every Iron Maiden song is a history lesson set to metal music", not even half of there songs are!
Not to be confused with the recent Crimean war...
Love Maiden. Story telling at its finest. Today's bands could never attain this greatness. That said you need to check out fear of the dark.
Just saw Maiden back on October 15th 2022. These guys are in their 60's now, and still kickin' A$$! You get a chance, see them LIVE, you won't regret it! 🤘🤘🤘
Nicko turned 70 this year even.
I saw them September 25th in San Diego. My daughter & I went. Even though she listens to a different genre, she said it was the best concert she's ever been to. They are still spectacular!
I saw them in concert in the 80’s, they put on a great theatrical show.
This is my all time favorite song from Iron Maiden
Great job with your reaction to The Trooper from Iron Maiden.. My favorite song from Them would 2 Minutes to Midnight.
Charge of the Light Brigade. Made my 8th graders read this couple weeks ago on the anniversary.
Alfalfa recited the charge of the light brigade during class and porky used a magnifying glass to light the firecrackers in Alfalfas back pocket ... iron maiden must love the little rascals
Lol! Yes! 1st time i ever heard The Charge of the Light Brigade was from Alfalfa.
A band I love called No Use For A Name wrote a line in one of their songs "Your favorite song was written but you'll never know"
If you want some more epic storytelling like this then you need to listen to their songs Aces High about the Battle of Britain during World War II and then Rime of the Ancient Mariner based on the story by Samuel Taylor Coldridge.
Two of my favorite Maiden songs!!
Another great song I used to jam out to on Guitar Hero/Rock Band XD you've been picking some gems Lilly!
Love this reaction! You would love run to the hills and Rime of the ancient mariner as well as Number of the beast! And there are many other to check out! Iron Maiden is one of my favorite progressive metal bands!
Fun fact, I met up Iron Maiden in high school in the 90’s. They were so kind
Fantastic reaction!👍
With many Iron Maiden songs, you get an accurate history lesson. The Trooper tells the account of a British soldier in the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against Russian forces during this battle on 25 October 1854. Lord Raglan had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a suicide mission charging straight at heavy Russian artillery which cost the lives of over a hundred British soldiers. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem to commemorate this disaster and he called it "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
The bronze that the recaptured guns were made from was used to make the Victoria Cross, a military medal of the very highest order that was awarded "for valour". Very few of these have ever been awarded, even to this day.
Other great Iron Maiden history lessons you could check out.... Run to the Hills, Alexander the Great, Paschendale and Empire of the Clouds.
I've been a Maiden fan since hearing their debut album in 1980 when I was 10 years old. I've seen them live every time they've played in London, their home ground, and they never disappoint. Up the Irons!!!
Caught Somewhere In Time by them 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
They were my very first concert!
One of my favorite songs by them, great reaction ^^
i know this is old, but i just came across your reaction. very nice reaction, but it was your comment on todays music that made me subscribe...cant wait to hear more from you.
Such an influential metal song with its texture and structure.
love your hair!! great reaction.
Also the guitar riff is played using triplets to mimic the galloping of the horses
The aunt of Bruce Dickinson (lead singer) was my maths teacher. She was totally into the band & was the coolest teacher ever.
Last 10 years? Sweetheart, the Album this came off of was released in 1984, 38 years ago. One thing about Maiden, Steve Harris (Bass), along with Bruce Dickingson (Vocals) and Adrian Smith (Guitar/Vocals) all have a very Historical perspective, and many of their songs end up being about something specific. Aaaand now i'm reminded of JUST how Old I am..LOL. Take a look sometime at their recent live videos, every one of them is over 60 now, and they can still bring down the house.
I totally agree with your thoughts about music at about 3:00. It's very rare these days to find anything that really qualifies as music.
Excellent review! I saw them do this live at a Monsters of Rock concert in Nuremburg back in the 80's. They are some of the best showmen in Rock. The greatest thing is you can tell they LOVE what they do.
Iron Maiden - Phantom Of The Opera (Live At Ullevi, Sweden) one of the best live performances ever
1983... i was 14 years old... i had 3 cassette tapes i played over and over and over till i broke them... Quiet Riot - Metal Health, Def Leppard - Pyromania and Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind... i miss those times...
This is one the first songs that got me into metal. Great reaction!
You’re a smart woman. Glad to see you enjoying the music I loved when I was a teen.
Legendary bass from a legendary band.
I love this song!!!!
bruce is also an airline pilot and was a world ranked fencer. that man really knows how to live.
I grew up on bands like Maiden and it's just great to see the or some of the younger generation getting it. Maiden has a huge catalog of songs. Plenty of great ones to choose from.
great choice !
Another Iron Maiden song I recommend is "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" simply because of hte EPIC guitar solos!
This is the song that started it all for me back in 1983. It was the last song on a metal compilation called Masters Of Metal Volume I, put out by a Canadian record label (K-Tel Records) famous for their "hits" albums, which were always advertised on TV (that's how I discovered it, lol). What a great collection of songs, especially that last one!!
Was that the album with Fast as a Shark by Accept on it, it started with bavarian folk music?🤘
@@nikkihayes5411
No, Volume I did not feature Accept, but Volume II (the following year) did - the song was Balls To The Wall, though.
However, in my Internet searches of these compilations, it appears there were many compilations by the name of "Master Of Metal" - from Canada, the US, and maybe a few other regions - and even the Canadian/K-Tel versions had some alternate track lisitngs. So, for all I know, Fast As A Shark might have appeared on one of those?
@@nikkihayes5411
If it helps (?), the album art had some cool 3D looking logo with laserbolts randomly shooting through it, set against an outer-space background, and the arc of a "planetary" surface below it, which was blacked out (to list the featured artists) and a kind of fiery glow all around its surface. The logo's typeface was a serif style, sort of a combination of calligraphy styles and Roman block-letter, and the colors were mainly red & blue for Volume I, and a disgusting pink & lime green for Volume II (what were they thinking ! probably a reflection of the "glam" era or something?).
@@BlackieNuff mine was on cassette 📼 red backgound with an Eddie-like mad max figure so probably one of the many comp tapes from the 80's....do remember it had a Bon Jovi track (in and out of love). Still dont like Bonjovi👿👍
@@nikkihayes5411
Can't say as I recall the cover you described, but I do recall seeing that Bon Jovi song as one of the roster alternates (Van Halen was another one). That particular song turned up on another Canadian compilation in 1985 called White Hot : An All-Out Metal Assault, and that cover had close-up of a hand clad in a finger-less glove and a spiked/studded wristband, gripping onto a guitar neck, and the point of contact was glowing "white hot". Despite some of the glam bands being on it, it was a pretty good mix as well. Though I think the label was "PolyTel" (rather than K-Tel) or "Polygram" or some damn thing... we Canucks had so many goofy "as advertised on TV" types of distribution labels, it was impossible to keep them all straight, lol.
Galloping with Maiden!
Well 2022 Maiden were touring, 2021 they released a new album and a new tour on sale for 2023. This music is still out there ☺️
Maiden Iconic!!
i just saw Maiden two weeks ago in Tampa " always a great show" and as a proud veteran Airman this is one of my favorite sons of theirs" a rally call against grim odds . you stand for your brothers on those lines.
Being an Airman my favorite song of Maiden's is Aces High.
The lead man is Bruce Dickinson, he is a brilliant singer, and the pilot for the band when they did their world tour.
Sabaton would be the band to listen to for similar historical content. Not only are they big history buffs but the lead has an awesome vocal range
Great reviews! Iron Maiden Run to the Hills
God I feel old, this song got me into Iron Maiden back in 85 now I'm 53 and still listening, The Piece of mind album is my favourite check out To tame a land from said album,
Alexander the Great from Somewhere in Time.
and Rime of the Ancient Mariner a classic from the Powerslave album.
Great music never gets old or dies, great to see the younger generation loving it.......
I love the last 2 lines, “As a lay forgotten and alone; without a tear I take my parting groan”.
Iron Maiden, a very interesting meme was made, "what if Iron Maiden was a conspiracy by teachers to get kids interested in literature and history" because a lot of their best songs are based on either events in history, or by pieces of classic literature.
"Half a league, half a league, half a league onward. All in the valley of death rode the six hundred." I remember the first time I heard this, 1983 I guess, headed north on I5 in Seattle on KZOK. I was blown away! Up the irons! If you like good story telling in rock, check out The Warning. 21st Century Blood, Copper Bullets, Black Holes, Anomosity to name a few. Queen of the Murder Scene is an album that tells a single story. Best to listen to that in order!
Nothing like being in the crowd screaming your lungs out at plungining into certain death
The charge of the light brigade, the song is about the charge of the light brigade
I would recommend " Rime of the Ancient Mariner", based on the poem by Samuel Colleridge, it is long at 10 minutes or so but we'll worth it. So glad you liked The Trooper, one of my favourites.
"Where is this kind of music hiding in 2022" = 'Senjutsu' Iron Maiden's latest album from 2021 :)
The clips of the fighting and horses are from an old Erol Flynn movie.
"the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War, and inspired by Lord Tennyson's 1854 poem of the same name."
Iron Maiden makes history and literature fun. When I heard this song, back in the day, I had never known about the battle of Balaclava or read Tennyson's poem. Iron Maiden spurred me to learn about this history, as well as Paschendale and give me a different perspective to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a book that I was forced to read in middle school.
Another couple of their songs you need to check out are "piece of mind", and "aces high". If you have not listened to these yet they are worth it.
lol, Iron maiden did alot of songs that involved facts based on history. Thanks to them i passed a history test about alexander the great. All the answers where in their song. Best test ever, lol
Up the Irons!!
Fear of the Dark live in rio
Nice reaction. Refreshing to see someone so much younger sounding OG! Up the Irons!
The battle this song is based on took place in the 1850s.
Lilly Jane, we still have tons of music like this being made but unfortunately it's on smaller labels these days so it's rarely noticed. The U.S., Canada, Japan and many countries in both Europe and Asia have strong markets full of hard rock/classic metal style bands. Even Iron Maiden themselves are still putting out music like this. Their song The Writing on the Wall was just released in August. Frontier Records/Frontiers Records are my favorite label when it comes to this type of music these days. Iron Maiden and quite a few other fantastic bands are currently on Sanctuary Records. Bands such as Smith/Kotzen, Voodoo Circle, Dead Daisies, California Breed, Heaven and Earth, Sunstorm, The Last Vegas, Coldrain and Hyde/Vamps (not to be confused with the band The Vamps ... Vamps is a fantastic Japanese hard rock/classic metal band) still have strong followings and continuously put out great music. Some really good bands that got passed by yet had fantastic libraries from recent years include Black Country Communion, Eye Empire and Hurt.
As I lay there forgotten and alone... Its so powerful. In the battle, one goes down and he's simply left. Listen to Billy Joel Goodnight Saigon. One of the gretest and most deeply written war songs of all time.
All time favorite Maiden song. Music definitely isn't the same as when I was growing up (yeah, I'm old).
Years ago I saw a meme thats asked "what if Iron Maiden was just created by teachers to teach us about history and literature?"
Yes!!!! More Maiden please! "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", 22 Acacia Avenue, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Powerslave, The Number of the Beast, Fear of the Dark
It's about Crimea war fight from 1853 and 1856, On one side were Russia and from the other side an alliance who included Englend France , Octoman empire and Regno di Sardegna
Iron maidens entire catalog is a history lesson
Sorry, but that's not true. I don't believe their first two albums had anything historical included, and ever since NOTB, they've had one or two per album, their Inspirations come from so many sources, history is just one small part.
The Crimean War. The poem was written by one of the light brigade survivors. In the 1850s.
One of my favorite guitar licks of all time.
I've been watching a couple of your reactions lately, and only know I realize that (imho) you're rocking a perfect mid-to-late 90s look! Indeed you remind me of some of my high-school classmates from back then. 😆
Keep being awesome!
the rime of the ancient Marinier live by them is a must , keep rockin
I have the 3D picture on my wall of THE TROOPER COVER ART! Awesome song!
We do still have great music like this. Bloodywood, Dillinger Escape Plan, Periphery, Animals As Leaders, Jinjer, Gojira, Devin Townsend Project, Spiritbox, Infected Rain, Mastodon, Arch Enemy, Meshuggah
You just got a new sub🏴😃🎄
This song was based on the 1853 Crimean war, in which the coalition w/ British empire (w/ the French and Turkish Ottoman) attacked the Russian empire for territorial control.
We are talking about the Crimean War, the middle of the 19th century, when Britain intervened in the war between Russia and Turkey on the side of Turkey. And specifically about one episode of that war, when the British command gave the order to take well-fortified artillery positions of Russia, using cavalry. The order was absolutely impossible, the cavalrymen were simply sent to their deaths. They were all killed by artillery
#GOATS of Metal. UP THE IRONS 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
There still are metal bands who talk about history in his songs. Sabaton is one of them.

Iron Maiden is the best history lesson you can take
the video scenes are from The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936 film)
I love sabaton I recommend it listen to steal commanders they sing about war stories and war evolution though out history
More Iron Maiden please. Like Metellica, they have a very large catalog of great music, vocals, and song writing.
Iron Maiden are master story tellers. A lot of their songs are about historical events or literary passages. Alexander The Great, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Flight Of Icarus ... there are just too many songs to list.
Sabaton are a modern metal band that writes songs about historical events!
Absolute legendary song from an awesome era of music. You can find it being covered by a young band called LILIAC. They cover this song and have so much amazing original music as well. You wont regret it if you check them out. Awesome reaction.
Also the cover band The Iron Maidens were an all female band that rocked it as well as the original band...
@@joealvarez8733 thanks, i will check them out.
The Iron Maiden guys are the most humble dudes you could meet. I used to play football (soccer) with Steve Harris way back before Iron Maiden took off, he is a top bloke......then I started watching them at the "Ruskins" as they started to get famous and he always had time to talk....as i said great guys...."Up the 'Ammers".
