  • Last spring Brandon Purcell set off on a unique adventure chasing spring black bears in Coastal Alaska. In these areas black bears key in on green grass that grows voraciously along banks near the ocean and where small streams and creeks enter the ocean. Constant tide swings reveal oysters and barnacles that the bears also add to their diet. Joining forces with locals Dan Peters and Jesse Knock the guys set out on a boat based adventure in search of big bruins and an experience of a lifetime.

What a great adventure and film! The editor did a great job capturing the whole story, including all the stalks that didn't result in a kill. The little scene about mechanical issues on the boat struck with me too. Last season we had a mechanical failure after about a 3 hour boat ride to get to the hunting area. I had a nice bear spotted on shore at about 400 yards from where the boat was positioned, but we couldn't restart the main engine to reposition it and then launch the inflatable. So hunting became a secondary priority to troubleshooting the engine and just getting back safe. It was a nice 6'+ black bear (no rubs on the hide) that took his time eating some kelp and watching us dink around with the engine for about 30 min before he finally wandered off. We ended up taking the kicker back to harbor, which was about a 15 hour putz at 5-6 kts. Good times...
T - Minus one month until I am planning on going out myself for a redemption trip. This film dropped just in time as a great primer!

I would have shot the 6' 8 to 7 foot bear the first day without a second thought. A really nice trophy with a bow. Frankly, I have never understood not taking a mature prime animal instead of waiting for a declining animal. The day one bear has bred and passed on the genes, so available for harvest in my book. Its like passing on "the rock" to take George Burns. I enjoyed the fellow shooting the marlin 336 in 30-30. I don't play with sharp sticks but I have taken 3 with a lever action in 50 Alaskan.

For whatever this is worth......let me tell you a little about what I've learned from 22 years living in the remoteness of Northern British Columbia. In regards to your feelings about shooting a sow, predators fall under a very different category than ungulates when it comes to male vs female harvest. There's a certain political correctness that wants to dominate our thinking about this. I know you're not really in great ungulate country there, so it's probably not a huge deal, but an over abundance of predators is not good. We have so many bears here in our area, the ungulates are suffering badly. Shooting a sow is just as good of a management idea as anything. Just my thoughts......not every one will like them......
