  • Running Stories is a video series to tie in with the renewed interest in fitness and rejuvenation that January brings. These are tales of how running has changed people's lives.
Mark used running to cope with his friend’s suicide. But it grew to take over his identity.
He'd turned to running as a coping mechanism. But it took over his life, and Mark says he’d “be out running before I even realised I was doing it”. He created it as a safety bubble - but then realised he couldn’t get out: “I couldn’t figure out any other way of coping with anything.” It was only when he spoke out about his depression that his relationship with running went back to normal.
The 26-year-old says: “My identity was built around me being a runner. Now I’d say I’m someone who runs.”

Drinking did not work so In those desperate moments when Mark had to drag himself out for a run or was out running before he knew it...did he have an alternative, was there an alternative available at that moment...one dreads to think what it might have been. It was a very short video so I have possibly misunderstood the message it is giving. I don't think running was the problem. Possibly Mark relied too much on running to help him cope before realising that he needed further help. A very honest and powerful account. Thank You

Good exercise by both running as well as power walking is only thing that ever has helped me with my own head issues!
Alcoholism is worse than drug addiction because people happily turn a blind eye to it and it’s not cool...

He made a connection between running and a cool down mechanism. His brain made him think that running is the only way he could escape his problems, but doing so every day tiers out the body. When he was dragging himself out there is because he was physically exhausted but his mind made him do it to cool down
