Installing a Boost Gauge on the Turbo 212 Go Kart
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 дек 2018
- In this video we drive the 60's turbo go kart for the first time with a boost gauge! This thing is powered by a turbocharged predator 212 engine. What we needed to do was make a turbo manifold for the turbo predator 212, oil system, and electrical system to make sure the turbo could run completely autonomously, that way when we hook it up to the engine, we would know that there were no issues on the turbo side of things. After we did that we ran this turbo kart under boost with 2 carburetors, made custom intake piping, and finally revved it up and tuned it so it ripped! Then, a few weeks later we decided to change things up and use a single blow-through carb design with a pressurized fuel system and a 22mm mikuni.
Thanks for watching and be sure to stay tuned for this thing making some boost while driving!

Ok guys this is an old video but we’re gotten a lot of comments doubting our boost number and we can now clarify that this thing made 5lbs of boost on the dyno (securely mounted with no vibrations)
Definitely check out the video here ruclips.net/video/_Sq3wdldJbY/видео.html
Wanna see how much boost it *really* makes?
-
Hook the kart to the trucks tailgate.(got a hitch and rope?)
Put the truck in neutral and try to pull it with the kart. (to put load on the engine)
Then record the boost reading.
2 types of content in 1 video. You're welcome.
UnTamed Mustang I agreeeee
I also wouldnt bother worrying about the wastegate. I would just lock it down shut and make whatever boost that turbo is capable of on that engine. Just fuel it properly and check the plug frequently.
I hope they take notice of this.
Why on earth the want to manually control the wastgate with a cable?
I agree tuning the carb and checking the plug is the only thing they should be doing right now
@@garyjones122 there are so many draw through carbureted turbo cars out there because it's much easier to tune the carb that way. I rather do things with a more scientific approach and understand how something works in order to improve upon it's function and performance.
@@michaelbenedict9549 and how is that huh???

Wow Honda really stepped up their Indycar engine this year

Why not use a torque converter so you can stay in that turbo curve more ? Just an idea.
Really enjoyed that. And I really like your truck
Neat build! And great video!
Nice one BBR keep up the videos
I feel like a turbo would work better with a twin cylinder motor
It does. havnt found a channel that has a turbo sngle cylinder mower engine that functions correctly. 1-2psi at best. Really not enough to overcome the restrictions in the exhaust. Not worth it in my opinion.
@@zuestoots5176 Needs a predator 670 I think. Better spark, smoother engine, proper oil system, and a lot more capacity to spool the turbo.
I said the same thing in an earlier video on this
I think the addition of a boost cylinder-- Think a bottle of .25 cu ft on the intake side of the carburetor would help smooth out the surge immensely. Also, higher rpm mods to the engine are cheap and can be done for a few hundred $$, increasing rpm, and in turn the air volume would increase. I can hear the turbo get into boost just when the engine is running out of rpm. Double the rpm capability and that thing will scream and you'll need the wastegate!
best turbo setup I've seen yet so kudos to you guys but you didn't mention if it was any faster. let us know. great job keep it up!!
I hate to break your bubble but you are making less than 1 lb of boost , the gauge is moving mostly because of vibration . When you let off the throttle the gauge goes up for a split second because the airflow through the carb. slows suddenly . I am not trying to put you guys down I just do not understand why you think you can make this work when turbo experts have tried and failed .
Oi
He is making 6psi of boost he's just got a very bad leak and I don't see a vacuum hose connected this is the problem I face with my lifan 140cc
@@friedcunt30t98 they didn't make 6psi lol not even a few psi
George Hunt he made 5 psi, watch his new video where they hook it up too a computer and have it stabilized. No vibrations, that dial sucks but he is making 5 psi max.
Heck ya man keep them coming less see that thing run a good distance and build up the boost
Spacer helped a lot!
I love this! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
It seemed to be running a little better then it did last video. Did you guys do any off camera tuning
Great job with this project. Without a doubt, y'alls channel is one of the best on RUclips.
I think because you're pressurizing the carb bowl that you're emptying the fuel in the bowl, and then it dies down for a minute as it can't get more fuel into the bowl from the unpressurized fuel tank while under boost. Then you have to let off the throttle. That's why it isn't consistent under boost (pressurizing the fuel tank should fix)
All good things come to a Smokey end. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Gotta love those brakes. Also I wonder if the exhaust pipe is a bit close to the fuel tank?
You're not making 5-10psig of boost, you're likely making about 2-3. All the motion isn't from the boost, but from you using a cheap gauge that doesn't have any dampening for the needle and the bumps and vibration are making the needle bounce around. AT BEST, you're getting the average of where it's bouncing around to (which the best shot you had was from a little vacuum to about 5-6psig, about 2 or so psig) but the way those gauges work some will bounce from about the pressure you're making upward (the pressure acts as a bottom stop for the needle vibration), meaning you could possibly be making nothing.
Honestly, 2-3 psig is probably better than you should be getting on that setup.
yup, why I keep suggesting a Tillotsen fuel injector body and a brushless electric model jet ducted fan unit to provide the boost pressure, both of which could be program curved from engine RPMs more like a real turbo'd car.
+model nutty ikeep telling them they need a plenum but they don't listen even though this shows why. on my single turbo project I made maybe 20whp at 22psi on a bike that made 15 na. added a big plenum and bam I was making 40whp at 14psi. reason is with out one and having a big long intake cycle the pressure drops a lot fast so a big plenum lowers the pumping losses and makes boost the whole cycle where as here you can see it wants to go into vac and most likely isbut their reading is up stream enought that it dampens it some.
@@oliverscorsim finally someone who understands fluid dynamics, I've also tried telling them but to no avail, guess some people just won't take good advice.
@@oliverscorsim I building one right now. Could you explain or link me to something to learn about this. Want to do it right
@@nissanfrontier5162 I have a vid on my channel
Have you guys done a govenor delete and put stronger valve springs in it yet it'll help with the rpm to go up higher which will help with boost and better power band
Nice!!!
Gear ratio plays a BIG role in turbocharging.
A car for example wont easily make boost with a 4.56 gear ratio but will easily make boost with a 2.73 ratio.
How do i know? BECAUSE I've done it. And i have a twin turbo setup.
i learned the hard way. You just learned what took me a year to find out.
You are having fun and that's all that counts. Have a blast and learn along the way. That's hot rodding.
As far as the turbo, I wonder if it gets enough air to spin it up.
I dont know if there is a real reason for not having a live axle other than keeping it vintage but you really really need one😐
The fluctuation is caused by all the vibration and bumps so you can't even get a reading that's accurate
Scott Trepanosky I was thinking that, it’s definitely getting at least 5 lbs for sure but it could be making more but we probably shouldn’t assume because of that, we should be able to test true boost numbers on the dyno though.
Use siliconfluid dampened industrial pressure gauge.
Build Break Repeat Your gauge is fluctuating partly due to intake volume changes- ie intake valve opening. You are able to create positive pressure when the valves are closed, but the engine is able to consume almost all of the pressurized air on the intake stroke. You then get 3 revolutions of the crank shaft to build boost again, before the intake valve opens on the next intake stroke.
To steady the pointer, you will need a “snubber” or isolator. I had the same problem on my Cummins powered Ram ( in my pic). The gauge would flutter wildly at high rpm and high boost. It would flutter between 27-32 psi.
This snubber fitting acts as a filter, so the needle isn’t as sensitive to the rapid changes in air pressure.
Next, you will need more boost. Right now you approx 0 psi NET, so you have overcome the engines vacuum, but you need to create positive pressure now.
Remember, boost is just a fun number... air density is what you’re after, but for now, just focus on a positive NET intake pressure 😉. Keep up the good work!
@@dieseldemon8562 its only 1.5 revolutions before the next opening of the intake valve. There are 2 cycles per revolution. Intake/compression on one revolution and power/exhaust on the next revolution. So from the end of one intake cycle, to the beginning of the next is 1.5 revolutions. 3 revolutions would be the end of the second power cycle since the original closing of the intake valve.
Tanner Marlow You’re right. I’m not sure what I was thinking that night lol. Yes, the turbo is only driven on the exhaust stroke, so it receives a pulse every 2 revolutions of the crankshaft. 720 degrees of rotation for every event be it intake, compression, power, or exhaust. I’m not sure where I got 3 revolutions. Lol. Time to go back to school 😂
Why not a cable hooked up to the gas peddle press has works waste gate?
I love your videos by Hunter😎😂😁🎅🎅🎅🎅
Looks like a good 2-3 psi, cool to me! Prob only a couple hp increase but cool shit! Keep up the hard work, someone might actually make a EFI kit one day for these things... I could see small engine turbo projects being the next big hobby, like turbo drift karts and shit. I really want to make a custom drift truck from scratch.. like a crosskart with a custom sheet metal Chevy C10 body..
Why are you still running it as a push through?
What size turbo are you using
I believe a digital boost gauge would be a smart investment
Were can I get that boost gauge?
Nice where did you get the turbo
5-10 pounds of boost? you're dreaming lol.
That was more like MAYBE 1-2 psi tops.
Damnnn little engine but fast
You can use the break to create load on the motor while in the stand buddy! Hope you try it
You may be losing boost at the rubber connection at the second carb. You could test it by putting a pipe on the intake side of the turbo and weld a plate on the end of the pipe and braze a schrader valve into the plate to pressurize the system. I'd try it with the piston just past TDC then secure the crankshaft somehow so the air pressure doesn't push the piston down then listen at the rubber for leaks. I'd start at 10 PSI first. It's easy to block even high pressure with your thumb on a 1/4 inch tube but the bigger the pipe or tube gets the harder it is to stop even low pressure. Like a lot of others are saying one carb pre turbo would eliminate most if not all of your problems.
only found the channel feww weeks ago but been stuck on watching all the videos this one looks nice as hell but the barbie jeep looks more dangerous(funner)
with what turbo is
A 0 to top speed (which should stay the same assuming the engine rpm is the same NA/turbo. If the acceleration changes, then the turbo is adding boost. Also, most stock waste gate aren't going to open until 6-8 psi.
I think a much smaller boost gauge would help, that thing is never going to see over 10psi
maybe a "push pull cable on the throttle/ waste gate lever would work to.
still a great share!
No way in HELL this is making 6lbs of boost
My vortech supercharger only made 10 lbs of boost with the stock pulley on my mustang
Not sure how actively you red comments but,
1. You need a bigger exhaust post turbo 3” would be overkill but 2.25” would be a good start.
2. Tighten your plug gap the stock coil isn’t making that hot of a spark to start with your not making that much positive pressure but I’m almost certain it’s blowing out just listening to how it revs. .028” is a pretty good starting point.
3. You need heavier valve springs not changing them on a governor removal will keep the engine alive n/a but there is a pretty good chance there either floating or being pushed open by the boost causing it to bleed back into the charge pipe causing a false reading of your gauge.
Hope that helps guys....well if this even gets looked at.
Y'all should try and do something with a small diesel like one from an old John Deere Gator
You wouldn't have near the tuning issue if you would put the carb before the turbo
Suck thru didn' t work. U can see it in 1 of the bids about this kart

Can you park it up against something and do a burnout and watch the boost?
i suggested he try and pull his truck.
OH THANK YOU SO MUCH for mounting the camera on a stand. Because I was starting to get motion sickness. To much wobbling and sudden pivots GEEZ😳🤢🤢🤮. But I do like the video and the cart.
You can do what I did and that is cut off the stock pull off and weld a pice of threaded rod to the rod that goes to the waste gate, then you put a sping on it and a bolt and nut on it so you can ajust rhe tension
I heard it spool omgggg
I think they make a fuel injection kit for that motor. You can solve the fuel issue and be able to hold more boost
Also hold the boost Guage while your driving and read it the vibrations are moving that needle not boost pressure
that white mini bike looks like its set up for Texas outlaw mini bike racing ?
Go power sports muffler on it will make the turbo noises more prevalent.
you should make an intake facing forward to ram air in the turbo
He's not going that fast to ram air into that little turbo. Plus I've never even heard of raming air into a turbo and if it was such a thing why do drag racers Mount them under the hood where they can't be forced into the turbo.
You need a rising rate fuel pump for blow through turbo carb set up.
You need to put twin turbskis on it and paint that go-kart black and do a Dale Earnhardt paint Scheme so you can do it for Dale
I subscribe right after seeing your name
Just put a little injector on that thing. All the ECM it would need could be very primitive like any E-nerd could throw together. I think little more than a two dimensional load map would get it done. BTW just subbed.
Now you just need the ability to fine tune it. It sounds like you need a little more fuel up top. It’s too bad the fuel injection kit for this is like 700$. Keep up the good work guys
700$ holy fuck man I'd just machine my own or better yet these injectors are 86$ for 9 on eBay atm but it seems like a scam for that many but who knows worth a shot tho if there worth 700$
Try moving the needle in the carb slide down by moving the e clip up one notch, it looks too rich at the beginning
In an effort to check wastegate operation, you guys could fab up a tractor flap / diesel flap I'm not sure what they're called.
those ihi rhb31 actuators open at 6-7lbs if my memory serves me right.
Time for duel springs and a cam.
in the future you should get rid of that 212cc predator and put all the upgrades on a 670cc predator. then put that on the gokart.
Now you need a wideband O2 sensor Standalone unit if I would like to find out your air fuel ratios, they're not that expensive then you'll know what it's doing in RPM range you can rig up a 12 volt Supply
Youd probably get more boost if you had a bigger pipe leaving the turbo exhaust
also be more boost if the pipe was shorter, more pressure between the engine and exhaust side of the turbo = more boost
Or a camshaft that draws in more air to begin with(and put out more exhaust flow/velocity) .
still thinking you'll get that much boost from a brushless electric model jet ducted fan unit.
what's cool about the concept? it'd be inexpensive, and it can be programmed. if combined with a Tillotsen fuel injector, you could program control both air boost and fuel injection curves. now imagine it hidden in a typical air filter without any fancy plumbing.
Guys it's a good effort, you're almost there.
Stay on course with tuning the carb to get the fueling right, it's still running poor, it will never run perfect but with perseverance you'll get it close and it will make boost much easier and considerably more power.
Also regarding the exhaust, too big of a diameter will make it spool slower despite what some people say.
I recommend making up a couple of inlet plenums of different volumes to test because of the single cylinder scenario.
You should do a port and Polish
i think you got closer to 4~ psi because the meter bounced allover the place. should have oil boost meter
Great video! Your measuring the boost incorrectly. Needs to be connected to a fitting in the intake manifold after the carb. This will indicate manifold vacuum and manifold boost, not pressure in the turbo. The only time you will see boost is when the throttle is either wide open (pressure in the intake port has dropped to near atmospheric pressure)or just after closing the throttle on over run just before the waste gate opens from over-pressure
YOU NEED A LARGER EXHAUST PIPE !!!!!! I’ve seen several videos of turbocharged small engine where they needed like a 1.5-2 inch exhaust pipe before making better power than n/a
Halfway thru the video the turbo whistle and watergate stopped working
In the minute 9:28 the turbo sound💪💪💪💪
Put a turbo kit on d c10 mini bike
I would deff get a wastegate with numbers from 1-5-10
You at least need a wide band O2 sensor to have any chance of tuning your EFR properly
Looked like 1-3 pounds of boost.... That's awesome for a gokart

thats awesome you guys finally got it working right now you should put electric start on it
All that work for 1-2 psi of boost, that needle is just fluctuating from vibration of driving. Nitrous would be more fun.
Lol u don't understand bro its a water gauge it made 5-6 psi the vibration made it go down not up that just wouldn't make sense because I run my drift trike at 12psi and the needle does this same thing but on my mates dyno it hit 13psi flat didn't move the whole time suspension plays a role u know......
if you could make the exhuast (dump pipe ) off the turbo larger or less angle i think you could gain more boost i think your getting to much back pressure
David Simpson That could be an issue, but also the back pressure might help it maintain boost during the intake stroke because there is no exhaust pushing it at that time cuz it’s a single cylinder engine.
@@BuildBreakRepeat not really as the back pressure would put more reverse force onto the blades on the intake stroke with no back pressure they blades would spin more freely on intake the real issue to making better flow is lack of spece to run the exhuast in alot of drag cars they run open pipes but they are set length to give most power at a set rpm range
@@BuildBreakRepeat it depends on cam overlap. Less reversion with less overlap. Its probably got a bit of reversion being a NA cam.
I have tried this, i had a too small dump pipe and no boost at all. Took the pipe off and got 0.4bars with a 125cc
That turbo would work better on a 13 HP
Why arent you doing a draw through carb setup instead of the blow through like you're running currently? It would make the compressor more efficient to have the fuel cooling the air through the compressor much like meth injection. It just makes tuning easier as well since its such a short distance to the combustion chamber.
Michael Benedict That’s what we thought too, but we tried multiple ways and it was incredibly laggy and had a very hard time maintaining idle, this way seemed to work very well for us and now we are just limited by the fact that it is a carb and not efi.

I think if you use a manual clutch u can get more boost or you're turbo
Ok it makes boost but runs ruff you need to get a hotter spark plug and set the gap tight because the boost is blowing the spark out and run about 12-15 psi on it.
U don't understand it is not a car bro they don't set the boost on this vid it's just making as much boost as it can do pretty much the motor spins the turbo and makes psi right and as much compressor power that engine can produce ATM is 6psi.
@@friedcunt30t98 Really lol you don't know what I can do with a turbo , I can make it spool up way faster I change the a/r of the hot side .
