If I’m assuming this is on a mini bike, you can try running the wire from the handlebar kill switch in series with the wire going to the coil and the key itself (ignition, not starting)

First off, the video is very useful, thank you! Second, the plastic shroud not fitting, when bolted all back on it sounds like it grinds on the pull start casing. Did this happen with you?? Did you grind the knobs down?.
Mario Giannini Yes. The factory plastic shroud is not compatible; I even noted it and you can SEE it in the video (Timestamp 9:54). I ground down one of the three knobs, because two of them fit. Hope this helps; I’m glad I could help otherwise.
Thank you for the detailed video! I just did mine but it seems to take a few tries before the engine starts. Battery is brandnew with 180 CCC so no problem there. I do notice the gear on the starter solenoid doesn't quite line up with the gear on the pulley? Could this be the problem? Do these gears have to interlock with each other?
Mary H If you meant the gears on the flywheel they should? Does it crank up like mine did in the video? Something must be weak or there’s something internally causing friction with the engine.
@@NiTecIndustries Yes I meant the gear on the flywheel...should it interlock with the gear on the starter?...mine looks like they didn't completely interlock but I did try to push the flywheel in as far as I can ..even pounding it with a rubber mallet. the engine doesn't start right away...it takes at least 3-4 turns of the key .
@@NiTecIndustries Ok I went over it last night. I double check the flywheel is as far in as possible. The gear on the starter is not engaging with the gear of the flywheel until you turn the key...then it pops out and engaged the flywheel gear and pop back when you release the key. Kinda makes sense because you wouldn't want the starter gear to keep spinning when the engine is running...right? I checked the spacing of my ignition coil and looks like one end is slightly out too far so I readjusted it to proper spacing of a business card thickness...guess what it seems to start easier now! Also on the side note..I'm not sure what size wire for the battery I supposed to use but I justr use some spare wire I have in the garage...I think maybe 12 gauge? Is that thick enough wire to connect to the battery and starter?
Mary H The ignition coil having that gap then meant the spark plug wasn’t getting the proper spark in the combustion chamber-causing the poor starting quality. Your electricals are working just fine. 14 gauge would be better wire. I don’t recall if it’s either 12 or 16 gauge that’s thicker, but 14 is common.
Just found this video while doing a google search, as I have a predator 212cc motor on my little duck hunting boat. Question though, is the Electric start kit you linked to amazon under the video, the same kit that you used? I want to make sure before ordering it for my Predator 212! Thanks!!
It “should” be, yes. It was the link on my gift wish list when my dad got it. If you can find a kit cheaper for a Honda GX200 clone elsewhere that will also work too, long as it’s for a non hemi motor (aka the flywheel bore isn’t tapered)
Picked up a go cart for my son and i ordered the coils and flywheel to try and wire se lights for it think i can just hook the wire up to a battery or do i need a voltage regulator?
The wire coming from the charging coils does not need to connect to the battery; it is its own power source. The switch box from this kit provides a voltage regulator via the one way diode. Perhaps when you ground the light down to the frame, and the battery grounds to the frame, then it will charge? But you don't need a regulator I dont think.
@@NiTecIndustries hmm i see i was going to attach the wire coming from the charging coils to the positive of the battery and just ground the negative to engine and have positive wires from the lights to the positive of the battery and negatives to chassis . For the kit it comes with a starter motor that "in theory" didn't need much to start it. I first used a 12V 5 aH 70 CCA battery and it would start on a full charge, but nothing more beyond that. I had to replace the starter motor after the cast aluminum chipped on the mounting holes. After doing that, the battery was weak and could not start. I would recommend using a battery that is *12V, 8aH, 120CCA*. Wouldn't want to get a battery that would blow the 10-Amp fuse on the switch box. As far as wiring goes I either have 14 or 16 gauge wire.
@@back2basics320 No, I do, it's just I've answered it in other comments through this video but I will answer it again: I'm using a 9lb battery with 12V, 8 AH, with 120 cold crank amps. It's a slightly bigger battery, which might be a problem with your absence of room.
AUSTIN ROBERTS No need to pull the cylinder head off. Check the valve cover. If it’s a shiny zinc, non-hemi. If it’s a cast iron, and it’s square with beveled edges, it’s a hemi. I also believe that hemi’s have tapered shaft, and therefore won’t be compatible with the flywheel provided in the kit.

If you mean where to get this kit, I left some links in the description and in the pinned comment for it. They’re the same thing but just different sellers. Otherwise I’m not sure what you’re asking.
Thank you, young sir for this video. I have a 5hp GC160 Honda engine(vertical cylinder - horizontal shaft). Do you know of an electric start conversion kit for this engine. I have made a few attempts to contact Honda, to no avail. I can't seem to find an electric start kit for my engine. Thank you ahead of time for the help.
So I don’t want to do a full on electric start but instead of the little red switch I want to put a key ignition would I need a kit or a 2 wire or like a 4 wire?
If I am understanding this correctly, you are still wanting to do a pull start, but have a key-switch at the front of your project? If that is the case, you only need a two-wire setup. I have done this with a key toggle switch in the episode where I install the drum brake. At the beginning of the video, I showed off how I did it. The hot replaces the lead wire coming from the factory switch, and the ground from the switch is grounded to the frame. Hope this helps.
Look in the description. Google search predator 212 electric start kit or Honda GX 190 GX 200 starter kit. Buy off of eBay or sellers that will sell it for under 100 bucks.

Let me reiterate that this is for a Non-hemi Predator 212cc and other 212 honda clones. There may be a kit out there for your engine, and it may have a completely different procedure compared to this video. The kit used in this video is irrelevant and incompatible with your engine.
Wish there was a way would think the same kit would work but idk if you happen to find a vid on this please post here thanks.. now for lights and horn you could use a phantom generator sold bye bike berry for motorized bikes this works on almost all 4 storke motors its made for the 80cc 4ts but have seen it on the 49cc and a 212 putting out 12.5volts at idle
Check your spark plug gap, ignition coil (additionally for wire damage, misconnections, etc.), and your spark plug; one of those is at fault. Additionally check the key switch wiring too.
@@hayimhere9604 Possibly, I don’t think so. I am not sure. And in general analogy, grinding on that metal can expose possibly better contact from metal to coil, but at the same time damaging it could have its disadvantages. I cannot help you here. It might be best to replace your coil to be safe.
The motor specifically for this was bought from Harbor Frieght (Originally it was a Christmas present a few years ago). You can also buy it online from Gopowersports, BMIKarts and parts, and more. When the discount is advertising, it's on sale for 100$; retail price is 110$.
A proof of concept was demonstrated by the user "peter torregrossa" of doing so. You will probably need a different kit, as this engine is comparable to the Honda GX270. Try finding an electric start kit for that, then come back here. Link to peter's video: ruclips.net/video/tvhz3boZciA/видео.html
Because of the tapered shaft on the hemi, this specific kit will not work, and which is why this instructable is for a NON-hemi predator HOWEVER, there is alternative parts (such as the flywheel) that you can order online to make the kit work in this case. I believe the flywheel brand is kohler. Check the comments and the community around this video to find further details. Sorry for the inconvenience.
And that kit i believe is this one for item #60363. Perhaps edit your comment to confirm? www.vpowerequipment.com/predator-212cc-electric-start-kit-60363/
In a short answer. Yes, in theory. My kit did not come with two, but the predator does have a bolt circle that allows for two coils to be mounted. You only need one to plug into the wiring of the switch box, so the second could be used to power a front headlamp for instance.
Great question! Despite that I am not running with a Torque-A-Verter, but I went outside just now to check. It looks like the starter's face facing the shaft is coincident with the clutch side of the engine block. It looks like it does protrude past just by a cm or two, so it is possible you will have to do some trimming on your CVT plate.
I would assume too that it depends on which torque-a-verter you have depending on how built your engine is. Since only said CVTs are rated for X amounts of horsepower. Also assuming too the orientation of the assembly depending if your engine is behind or in front of the axle.
Ok. I updated the description. Sorry about that; that was the kit I put on my Christmas list back then, but it's the electric start kit for the Honda GX 190/200. Hope this helps.
@@NiTecIndustries Your video got me headed in the right direction. I found and ordered a Honda starter kit for my Predator 212 non-hemi head. It sounds like it can be used with very little modification. Thanks much.
Please refer to the pinned FAQ next time. The taper on the hemi versus non hemi is different, and this specific kit will not work unless you find a compatible fly wheel.
Refer to the FAQ; Not this kit specifically. Since the ghost is a newer engine and this kit was designed around the era before the Tilitsons came out. My best advice would be to find either a manufactured billet flywheel with a ring gear pre-attached that can take the load of the ghost, or take that flywheel on the ghost to see if they can take a ring gear and press fit it on the flywheel.

@@everythingtech09 With all due respect, I don’t have an answer for that. Last time I did some researching , an off brand go power sports company has a billet flywheel with a ring gear, but it is incompatible with the 212 series due to a tapered shaft. Like I said, your best bet is to take your ghost’s flywheel and get it custom machined for a ring gear that is compatible.

@@back2basics320 No, I do, it's just I've answered it in other comments through this video but I will answer it again: I'm using a 9lb battery with 12V, 8 AH, with 120 cold crank amps. It's a slightly bigger battery, which might be a problem with your absence of room.
How do you know if you have the hemi version or not besides pulling the cylinder head off?
AUSTIN ROBERTS No need to pull the cylinder head off. Check the valve cover. If it’s a shiny zinc, non-hemi. If it’s a cast iron, and it’s square with beveled edges, it’s a hemi. I also believe that hemi’s have tapered shaft, and therefore won’t be compatible with the flywheel provided in the kit.
X!-NightHawk Videos-!X thank you!
There must be a way to install this onto a 79 cc predator engine. Do you know of a way.?
Sorry, but no. This kit is incompatible, and also there is not one in existence for the 79cc
is your gov. removed? what rpm can this setup handle?
Governor still installed. It’s a cast flywheel setup similar to the Honda GX200, and if I recall they’re rated around 3-3,500 rpm?
Is that flywheel safe for high rpm’s??
Nope. It’s a factory cast iron not meant to withhold anything higher than the governed 3500. You’ll need one custom machined..
Hey man is that a standard electric start conversion kit
Refer to the pinned FAQ, it is a Honda GX 200 electric start kit.
Thank you
Where did you get the small battery? What's the model?

Thank you nice. Can i install electric start on Honda gx390 engin
If you can find a kit appropriate for it. Yes. This is not meant for it (GX190/GX200)
Thank you brother yes i find in Aliexpress.com
Hello. I hope all is well with you. What link is for the 212 predator?
If you mean where to get this kit, I left some links in the description and in the pinned comment for it. They’re the same thing but just different sellers. Otherwise I’m not sure what you’re asking.
The 12 volt battery at how many amps should it be?
No more than 10 amp hours; I would recommend 8.
@@NiTecIndustries thanks broo!
If I have a stage 2 kit on my predator will this still work?
Not without machining the billet flywheel to accept the ring gear; the cast flywheel with pre-installed ring gear won’t be able to withstand high-rpm.
How do I put a electric start on a 301cc predator hemi
A different video attempted this, but this video would most likely be a similar principle
Bruce Raykiewicz I don’t think that would be possible then. Again I must iterate that this is for a Honda GX200 212 clone.
X!-NightHawk Videos-!X thx man
X!-NightHawk Videos-!X but if someone wanted to start it but the wasn’t in it it wouldn’t start correct?
If the key is in the off position, yes.
X!-NightHawk Videos-!X could I take out the original switch and put a key ignition in instead?
So is a battery necessary for this build?
If you don’t want the electric start, no; the battery is used to power the starter motor when you turn the key.
Hellz yea
Where did you buy the starter motor and the flywheel kit
Look in the description. Google search predator 212 electric start kit or Honda GX 190 GX 200 starter kit. Buy off of eBay or sellers that will sell it for under 100 bucks.
@@NiTecIndustries does the kit come with the new fly wheel or did you buy it separately
@@blaydetroiani8563 I supplied kits in the description. But you can do either or.
witch kit did you use?
Please refer to the FAQ and supplied links in the description, or google search one for a Honda GX200
How fast does your drifter go for that size motor
Current top speed is about 30 mph. 12T clutch and a 48T sprocket on 11" tires.

Can you install an electric start on a Honda gx160 engine
Correct. This is technically the kit for the GX160/GX200
hi will this work on my 168f diesel
Refer to the pinned FAQ; I also have no knowledge regarding those engines, so I wouldn’t ask here.
@@NiTecIndustries ah ok
yoooo! Can i do this to my 2001 yamaha yz125cc shifter kart!!????
Music Account Sorry, but no.
Let me reiterate that this is for a Non-hemi Predator 212cc and other 212 honda clones. There may be a kit out there for your engine, and it may have a completely different procedure compared to this video. The kit used in this video is irrelevant and incompatible with your engine.
Anyway to do this on a 79cc predator? (Love the sticker on the pull start)
Unfortunately, I am unaware of any kits for the 79cc. It would be cool, but I don't think it is possible.
X!-NightHawk Videos-!X ok thanks
Wish there was a way would think the same kit would work but idk if you happen to find a vid on this please post here thanks.. now for lights and horn you could use a phantom generator sold bye bike berry for motorized bikes this works on almost all 4 storke motors its made for the 80cc 4ts but have seen it on the 49cc and a 212 putting out 12.5volts at idle
Like to have seen the starter key box on the front LH side forward.
See future Drift Trike videos on my channel; I actually moved it in the next part (Part 11)
Can I put a key start on a 196cc
Depends on the engine company. This seems vague, and the kit is for a Honda GX 190 and a GX 200.
What happens if mine doesn't have spark
Check your spark plug gap, ignition coil (additionally for wire damage, misconnections, etc.), and your spark plug; one of those is at fault.
Additionally check the key switch wiring too.
@@NiTecIndustries if I screwed up the metal at the edge of coil could that be a problem
@@hayimhere9604 Possibly, I don’t think so. I am not sure. And in general analogy, grinding on that metal can expose possibly better contact from metal to coil, but at the same time damaging it could have its disadvantages. I cannot help you here. It might be best to replace your coil to be safe.
Where did you buy that motor?
The motor specifically for this was bought from Harbor Frieght (Originally it was a Christmas present a few years ago). You can also buy it online from Gopowersports, BMIKarts and parts, and more. When the discount is advertising, it's on sale for 100$; retail price is 110$.
will the kit work with a predator 301
A proof of concept was demonstrated by the user "peter torregrossa" of doing so. You will probably need a different kit, as this engine is comparable to the Honda GX270. Try finding an electric start kit for that, then come back here.
Link to peter's video: ruclips.net/video/tvhz3boZciA/видео.html
Will this work on a Hemi engine
Because of the tapered shaft on the hemi, this specific kit will not work, and which is why this instructable is for a NON-hemi predator
HOWEVER, there is alternative parts (such as the flywheel) that you can order online to make the kit work in this case. I believe the flywheel brand is kohler. Check the comments and the community around this video to find further details. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Link for the starter?
Comes in the kit, but you can search eBay for a GX200 starter motor.

How much did this cost you
Sorry for the late reply. It varies depending on the seller online. I think it’s under 100$ at least, but I can’t remember.
This thing isn't billet though so it will detonate at high rpm
Under the assumption that it’s a same casting as a conventional flywheel, yes.
@@NiTecIndustries I'd bet my last dollar that it's the same Chineseium casting as the stock one.
Did anyone notice the it’ll be fine and cars and cameras sticker
Can you put double coils if wanted
In a short answer. Yes, in theory. My kit did not come with two, but the predator does have a bolt circle that allows for two coils to be mounted. You only need one to plug into the wiring of the switch box, so the second could be used to power a front headlamp for instance.
My kit starts BUT WONT KILL ENGINE PLEASE HELP 😂
Check your grounds and the wiring that went from the spark plug to the original killswitch.
Does the starter protrude past the block on the clutch side? I have a cvt setup and need to know if it will clear. Thanks
I put a starter motor on my 212 and I have a Torque-A-Verter and it works fine, plenty of space.
I would assume too that it depends on which torque-a-verter you have depending on how built your engine is. Since only said CVTs are rated for X amounts of horsepower. Also assuming too the orientation of the assembly depending if your engine is behind or in front of the axle.
We’re you able to put back the pull start after the new electric starter setup
Olsen’s ATV customs Yes after having to modify the plastic piece behind the pull start cup.
Has anyone tried this on a Hemi and does it work?
There is a video lurking around here and there of it working, but this guy posted a video about that: ruclips.net/video/UGvrsFG6fzw/видео.html
Currently unavailable.
Give me a second; I'll update the description with better links.
@@briscollama2521 Glad to be of service my dude.
what ah/amp battery did you use?
Please refer to the FAQ, but this time around, I'm running about an 11ah battery with no sweat.
Will this work on the hemi engine
Please refer to the pinned FAQ next time. The taper on the hemi versus non hemi is different, and this specific kit will not work unless you find a compatible fly wheel.
Does this work on the ghost 212??
Refer to the FAQ; Not this kit specifically. Since the ghost is a newer engine and this kit was designed around the era before the Tilitsons came out. My best advice would be to find either a manufactured billet flywheel with a ring gear pre-attached that can take the load of the ghost, or take that flywheel on the ghost to see if they can take a ring gear and press fit it on the flywheel.

@@NiTecIndustries ok so what do you recommend me getting for it?
@@everythingtech09 With all due respect, I don’t have an answer for that. Last time I did some researching , an off brand go power sports company has a billet flywheel with a ring gear, but it is incompatible with the 212 series due to a tapered shaft. Like I said, your best bet is to take your ghost’s flywheel and get it custom machined for a ring gear that is compatible.
