It upsets me that after all the crap she went through, her mom still allowed this to happen. I can’t say whether she’s a good/bad mom, but I blame her for the backlash. About the restraint: It's not just that it's traumatic (though that should be enough) but the restraint used in the movie is specifically the Prone Restraint. The prone restraint can cause physical trauma to the body, which can lead to death up to 24 hours after the restraint was performed if medical attention isn't sought immediately (which, romanticizing it means no one would get medical attention because they think that they just "crushed them with love")
It has KILLED PEOPLE. To hear it be described as a "loving" action was honestly putrid.

Restraining is now ILLEGAL where I live thankfully, but the fact Sia depicted restraining in this way actually makes me feel ILL and makes me so fuckin mad. People used to only let me go when I stopped struggling and let them “hug me.” in reality they were hurting me, trapping me, pinning me down and taking away my autonomy. It’s very claustrophobic and suffocating. what I needed in those moments was space to calm down by myself. But instead I was restrained and I didn’t understand why people were doing that to me, and to be completely honest I still don’t understand why, I don’t understand how anyone could think that was a good thing to do. I’m not neurotypical but I’m also not autistic (which is an umbrella term that covers a huge spectrum of different experiences) and I would imagine there might be certain sensory/visual effects that seem perfectly plausible and normal and tell a cohesive story to an autistic person that I find wholly disjointed and overwhelming and confusing but to them tell a perfect story? I think that’s just fine, and maybe I won’t watch it but I’m glad there’s something in a rubric they can relate to...

Maddie cried and didn't wanna do this on the first day of filming, saying that she felt like she was disrespecting the community, even Sia herself comfirmed this. She pays for Maddie's security and has said that meeting Maddie felt like connection that a mother has with her first born. That's not even all of the things that make their relationship odd, considering this is an unrelated grown woman talking about a child. About the restraint *TW medical trauma* : my earliest memory is of being restrained to get an IV hooked but they couldn't find a vein. I had acute pneumonia for about two weeks and could barely breathe, so I was terrified out of my mind. Thus I started having a violent fit and then about three nurses restrained me, lifted me up, got on top me, etc. I was 2½ years old. That was enough to cause me so much trauma that whenever something heavy lays on top of me I panic. I can't stand people crushing me. Humans usually don't have memories until age 4 unless they're traumatic. Don't fucking restrain people by crushing them.

Disabled person here: Before I had even seen the trailer or the movie clips or heard the details of the casting, I knew this movie was bad news. How? The plot centers, not on the autistic character, but on the *caretaker* of the autistic girl. The story is all about the personal growth of the abled person, and how the disabled person helps their growth. This is a constant problem in disability representation in media: We are always there to inspire and motivate the abled people. We never get to have our own personal growth stories. And even worse, making a story about a disabled person's caretaker is seen as the same thing as supporting disabled voices. This is not a story about the disabled experience. It's a story about how abled, neurotypical people think of autism. And they are pretty much always wrong.

Thank you for this comment! You put words to the discomfort I was always feeling when watching movies including stories about disabilities. It always felt off and now I understand that it was because we always see the journey of the person influenced by the individual with disabilites, not the journey of the disabled person. It's like when people say, 'You should go work with disabled people, you can learn SO MUCH from them' as if it was some sort of lifestyle achievement and trophy at the same time.

Yo, you missed an entire other DIMENSION of this controversy. Sia revealed that Maddie was so upset that she cried, because she didn’t want autistic people to think she was making fun of them, and Sia made her do that horrible portrayal anyway. Later, Sia tried to justify shoehorning Maddie in as the main character instead of an actual autistic person by calling Maddie her “muse” and saying she “doesn’t want to” make a project without Maddie and “wouldn’t make art if it didn’t include her”. Which is CREEPY AS FUCK.
Keep in mind Maddie just turned 18, so she’s been a minor the entire time she’s known Sia. Maddie’s mom says she’s had many “sleepovers” with Sia, and they slept in the same bed and “cuddled”? Plus the whole Elastic Heart video was so creepy, Sia saying Maddie represents her “inner child” sets off alarm bells when you realize Sia was sleeping with Shia Labeouf during the filming of the Elastic Heart MV.
Edit: I know this comment and video are now 1 month old, but if anybody wants to know more, MackZBoss made a video about Maddie and the concerning relationship with the adults in her life (including from her dance mom days), with sources I can’t provide in a YT comment. And I’d also like to remind people that like…gr00ming is a thing + Sia has been a major part of Maddie’s career, so there’s also a huge power imbalance. There’s nothing wrong with kids sleeping in the same bed as a parent/parent figure, it’s the additional added context that makes the situation go from weird to bad.

She was 13 at the time Sia cast her and was involved with the project for so long that she probably couldn’t back down even if she realized it was problematic. Not to mention she was in so many of Sia’s videos and performances, so there’s a power dynamic to consider. It can be real hard to say no or voice your opinions to an adult you’ve been working with, especially if other adults around her were encouraging her to do this film. Now at 18, she’s just tryna do the best she can with damage control cause she was a kid when she agreed to do this. Hope she can divorce herself from this scandal soon without ruining her career.

as someone w adhd, i can tell you that during a meltdown, there is little to no cognitive function. it’s pure emotion, and it usually stems from feeling super overwhelmed, if anyone were to try and grab me and hold me like that mid-meltdown, i’d get seriously hurt, i’d hurt the person holding me, and the meltdown intensity would increase astronomically. never EVER hold someone down if they’re having a meltdown. instead, try to remove stressors in the environment they’re in. give the person a lot of space, let them get it out. the fact that sia even had the nerve to act like it’s okay to do that? it just implies that meltdowns are a simple thing, they’re easily contained- they’re not. not even close. it’s extremely horrible that this was even made, and then called realistic.
the fact that neurotypical people have the nerve to speak for us and try to explain this sh*t is absurd and abelist in itself. we can tell you how to help, we can tell you what’s happening (those of us that are high-functioning *normally, when at a resting state, these labels aren’t accurate and don’t encapsulate the full view of what we actually experience*), we can explain what goes on in our head and how we feel- it is just very difficult to put into words. but no one else knows or can understand how we feel, they don’t experience it.

Back when I was in elementary school, I used to be "restrained". My school did it, it was eventually shut down because a mother of an autistic child came to the school and saw that he was being held down and screamed, and THEN shoved into that stupid tiny cramped white empty closet.
*I can't believe it went on for so long all because most of us grew up being restrained.*
I now suffer from severe claustrophobia. I can't stand being in tiny inclosed rooms, being grabbed, or being surrounded by people. Not like I enjoyed it much as a kid either, but it's not a secret I was more "social" before they did this. So much the the point I had to go to a school where there was only 6 people in the entire High school.
So much where I have the constant fear of having a breakdown in front of people.
So much to the point where when I do break down my anxiety heightens a lot when I'm around more people. There's only *ONE* person I feel safe crying around. And that is my bf.
It's a slow process but I am getting stronger. My trauma may never be completely gone, but it doesn't define me. I won't let it define me.
Everytime one of the teachers restrained me, I never understood why. Most of the time I was just crying. Or panicking. I needed to calm myself down. They'd drag me by my leg, making my head hit the ground multiple times while we made it to the closeted room. I still don't know why. I remember telling them to let me go so I can deal with it myself. And to leave me alone. Why? When any other kid cried they would be told it's okay by the teacher, but because I'm neurodivergent I'm going to be punished. :(
    Thank you for reading.
