I thought it was super cool when she was literally booed for calling “I will always love you” her song, which she wrote, and she apologized and said she should have called it our song, meaning Whitney Houston who popularized the song. She had every right to call it her song, but she doesn’t, she has too much grace.
Positive Southern Values Dolly Represents: - country music, at its best - the idea of southern hospitality/helping others in need - always being cordial and inclusive to others, because that’s just what you do - standing up for oneself and not taking any crap, as is emblematic of the “tough southern woman” archetype - big hair
I don’t remember the exact quote, but I remember hearing a story where, as a child, Dolly saw a woman in her hometown and thought she was beautiful. But she was told that the woman was “the town whore” and that she shouldn’t look up to her. Then the child Dolly decided she was going to grow up just like her and apparently the way she dresses now is how the woman dressed then.
Here is a tidbit. Her husband has never seen her perform. He's never attended any awards shows or interviews or concerts and is rarely photographed. He married Dolly the person, not Dolly the star.

Tennessee resident here. I’m an hour from Sevierville. I wanted something else to be known: in 2016, wildfires RIPPED through the Great Smoky Mountains. It killed 20 people, and put thousands of residents in bad shape (financially, emotionally, mentally...). They lost homes and friends and jobs, and a lot of them suffered burns trying to get away. Dolly literally paid bills for countless residents who needed it for months on end. She reconstructed smaller businesses and helped raise funds for organizations designed to build back the community. And I’m not even touching on everything she did during such a devastating time. She gave life back to the community she lives in, owns business in and is known for. She is a gem of a human being and that’s why we love her so much.
I literally came to comment about this (fellow regional resident here). Honestly the best things to come out of East Tennessee are the mountains and Dolly. I didn’t even know the thing about the (former) Dixie Stampede. That’s especially amazing in the face of the other attractions in the area that capitalize off of the “hillbilly” regional stereotype.
When Dolly Parton turned down the statue, ‘Dolly Parton’ was trending on Twitter and I feared the worst. Thankfully it was just her being an ICON. Yet again.
I don’t understand people’s stance of “its history leave it there”, when it represents a hateful person or ideal. Take it to a museum if you want to honor history, don’t leave it on capitol grounds to represent your government.

Big hair, immaculate nails and always looking put together. They are not bad stereotypes, but they are southern stereotypes. She is a true angel on earth.
Btw- just wanted to say real quick, The Dixie Stampede wasn’t a ride, it was a dinner theater type show, set in a huge arena where you are served hot food while watching people perform on horses. (Sevier County/Dollywood is right down the road from me, so my family and I go often.) I remember when she decided to change the name to Dolly Patton’s Stampede and sooo many ppl were butt hurt for some reason saying “I can’t believe Dolly folded under the pressure to actually change the name of this legendary theater.” But here’s the thing, not one person actually asked Dolly to do this. There was no pressure, from anyone. It had really never been brought up. Dolly on her OWN realized how problematic this name was and decided on her OWN to change it. 🤷🏻♀️ Because that’s just what a boss Queen she is. Dolly is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs. ❤️
I understand why she turned it down, she's always seemed to have a humility a lot of rich people/celebrities can't find, and a strong faith in God. Bless this woman for her charity and humility, I would have loved to see a statue of her. I thank God for people like her.
I like Dolly's version more because she sings it with so much emotion. Whitney's is powerful, but Dolly crying at the end while she sings hits way more imo
Also, she wasn't bitter about Whitney's major success and different take on the song. People used to ask her if she was upset that Whitney's got much more attention and she said "the way she sang it, that's her song" basically saying that Whitney's version was amazing too and deserved the hype.

Honestly, she earned the term "icon status" I know maybe 3? Of her songs, but if anyone says anything bad about this woman, I will do a doctoral dissertation on why she's fabulous. When I was in high school decades ago people didn't openly support gays or the need for legislation to allow marriage equality. Being from New Orleans exposes you to all walks of life at a young age. But in the late 80's people were very low key if they supported alternative lifestyles. I saw a interview of Dolly on MTV that impacted my voice on equality. I thought it was super cool when she was literally booed for calling “I will always love you” her song, which she wrote, and she apologized and said she should have called it our song, meaning Whitney Houston who popularized the song. She had every right to call it her song, but she doesn’t, she has too much grace.
Well, I think that about clinches it.
Positive Southern Values Dolly Represents:
- country music, at its best
- the idea of southern hospitality/helping others in need
- always being cordial and inclusive to others, because that’s just what you do
- standing up for oneself and not taking any crap, as is emblematic of the “tough southern woman” archetype
- big hair
And obviously the big boobies but that’s a complete aside.
Don’t forget we pull over and put our hands on our hearts for funerals!

She tells that story herself.

Yet again.

For years I didn’t know it was her song
I like Dolly's version more because she sings it with so much emotion. Whitney's is powerful, but Dolly crying at the end while she sings hits way more imo
Also, she wasn't bitter about Whitney's major success and different take on the song. People used to ask her if she was upset that Whitney's got much more attention and she said "the way she sang it, that's her song" basically saying that Whitney's version was amazing too and deserved the hype.
