      Yeah, the moment she said there should be a place in feminism for women who "say no but mean yes" I was like "oh, so you mean feminism should accommodate women too insecure in their sexuality, agency and desires to state what they want by reinforcing the dangerous and harmful belief that even when women explicitly state someone's sexual advances aren't welcome they secretly are, so no harm done?"
      She's got some audacity dubbing herself a "strong woman" and that "she paved the way" when she can't even admit what she wants to her partner lol. Saying that feminism should support this line of thinking really just outs her as someone whose comments on feminism and women's issues shouldn't be taken seriously as she's clearly talking from a place of ignorance. How out-of-touch does she have to be to not realize that the kind of "woman" she's describing is opposed to feminism's ideas of valuing women's words and reclaiming female sexuality? Her brand of "womanhood"- and by that I mean solely her "say no but mean yes" part of it, not traditional femininity nor submissive role- never was and never will be morally okay. Her thinking that "a new/3rd wave of feminism will come" (ayyyy lmao, I'm second-hand embarrassed on her behalf at this point) in which this is acceptable, is just another indication of her talking out of her ass while trying to look informed.
      This was likely just a publicity stand so I don't wanna waste too much time talking about it. I just think it's genuinely hilarious that she gets butthurt over people telling her that she's regressive then wonders what's wrong with feminism for not endorsing her "I say no but I mean yes" bs that is frequently used as an excuse for sexual assault and rape. It's a statement that's lacking self-awareness so much that it's brilliant.
      Oh and D'Angelo's a doll for voicing that, and voicing it so briefly yet accurately.

      @wings of a butterfly No means no. If you had no interest with someone but they kept pushing themselves onto you, thats harrassment. It's people like you who pressure people into having sex/relationships with you with your constant begging, bitching and moaning.

    • @jspaingreene6350
      @jspaingreene6350 4 года назад +26

      @wings of a butterfly LDR can hardly be considered "original" for discussing the 'no means yes' trope. The writer Colette immediately comes to mind. Her short stories look at different sides of that trope: its destructiveness, its nuance, possibly pleasures, and the consequences.
      That this young man can intelligently discuss different templates placed onto members of society and reflect back the idea that most often the man is placing his designs on the woman is at least worthy of discussion. Certainly the idea that LDR might be a bird in a cage she doesn't know exists would be next level as well. Or she might simply be flirtatious as you say...or even the mistress devising all this, a puppet master. That's still not terribly original, but perhaps interesting. Madonna thought it was fun 20+ years ago.
      However, to dismiss the reality that so many women deal with unwanted attention under the guise of "no means yes" as the crabbing of sjw's is far too pat. You seem far too intelligent to miss that.

      @@pterocardio i think that even if that’s the intent of the movement the amount of supporters who do not recognize and support that intent is great enough to where it has been erased in every impactful way and even though true feminists accept all women, the bulk of the movement, which is like all movements made up of people who don’t think for themselves (not that feminism is wrong, just that people repeat opinions and don’t form them), makes it so that the impact of the movement and it’s rhetoric does not accept traditional femininity

    • @pterocardio
      @pterocardio 3 года назад +74

      @@bluewescott4631 while i agree that there will always be people who dont understand what feminism stands for who skew the principles of the movement, i do not believe that is the majority. my issue with lana del rey's perspective of feminism and feminists is even early on she has excluded herself from the conversation, claiming that she'd much rather study the universe than feminism when she was asked about it. she has the privilege to exclude herself from feminist conversations and now she is claiming that women like her have no space in the feminist movement. she's very privileged and yet she posits herself as lacking in it simply because she is traditionally feminine, and that's really the crux of the criticism of many feminists towards her. and every time she gets criticized for it, she considers it as an attack towards her femininity.

      Seeing at the point of feminism is that women are all judged, put against each other, taught to hate ourselves and our bodies etc, it shocks me that people get mad when a woman expresses she feels misunderstood. The whole “I’m not like other girls” thing makes no sense me personally, because while I can’t relate, I understand that some women/people feel genuinely different and outcasted by society. But once they actually embrace that difference and label themselves as “weird”, people genuinely ATTACK them for saying it. They often aren’t trying to say that they’re above other women. It’s just that people made THEM feel that they were different and isolated. I don’t get it...

Shallon has been on youtube for an awful long time and only had a few hundred thousand subscribers. The thing is, I think Shallon's reach over the years has been bigger than it looks on the outside. She's so harsh that I think a lot of people quickly subscribed and unsubscribed from her because she's actually the worst. If she weren't such a terrible person, I think with how well spoken she is and how hyped she gets people she would probably have at least a couple million behind her. As a white woman, it genuinely made me uncomfortable to hear her say "feminism needs a space for women like me". Her comments come from such a childish woe is me place and not as a comment about it. These 7 women she's mentioned have empowered women so much.

    • @harrypike5140
      @harrypike5140 2 года назад

      Her comment isnt about race though, take off the identity politics goggles that you Americans love to wear 24/7. She is talking about women who are traditionally 'feminine, girly, soft, etc. Ignoring ethnicity completely, her vibe is so different from someone like Cardi B or even Beyonce. And I'm not talking about skin colour. Presentation and aesthetic matters to our perception of people. We're obviously going to perceive Lana in a different way to Cardi B given that the latter is overtly sexual in her image and lyrics and shaking her ass, sticking tongue out and so on. Obviously Lana knows she is a pretty girl, but she doesnt use her sexually in an aggressive manner like a lot of POC women artists do. More softer less assertive women like her tend to get a bit undermined by the industry and by feminists. That is what she is referring to.
      And I mean, define empowering? Its not a one size fits all thing. Is WAP empowering? Not to a lot of women it's not! Alot of people find it gross, quite frankly.

You can comment on every person on here complaining but I'm assuming that you aren't a woman and can't actually understand what makes a woman feel empowered. Women can be empowered by anything and you're a moron if you're gonna sit here and say that they can't. And also someone like Lizzo is definitely a person who empowers women. Beyonce also. this isn't identity politics it's a statement of her blatantly using POC women to push an agenda that there's not more "soft" women. It's offensive and hurtful to those women and to all the women in the space. Also fuck off bringing up WAP. It's the first thing men go to to say women are "whores" and it's not empowering. Maybe, just maybe, women appreciate songs about their sexual experience that isn't just from the male perspective.

You can express your sexuality without nonsense like that. Better yet, be Sexual in your private life and not in everyone's faces..

I'm sorry Lana that sad girl vibes are your life but just like how your experiences are valid so are those of strippers, so are those of druggies, so are those of toxic relationships that thrive on sex. Don't invalidate another women's experience of being in the streets and stripping for money when that's what their story is and say that oh they're super popular for talking about sex when I'm trying to talk about real shit. It's very hypocritical to say the least.

      yh I was thinking the same thing there is literally no artist that hasnt been criticised. People have been bashing Jennifer Lopez and Shakira for their "sexual" performance last year and literally turned off the TV. Female artists singing about sex are somehow still seen as controversial and boundary crossing, which in itself is pretty sad to me, considering how many male artists have been able to sing about getting laid for decades by now. How often any artist is slut shamed no matter what outfit they were. Megan and Nicki have been slammed so often as if their music will turn girls into sex demons or sth. But sure, Lana is the only one who has ever been criticised of anything.

    • @-jg9pi
      @-jg9pi 4 года назад +10

      I don't know about you but there is an entire branch of feminism that views women as a collective and therefore any decision a woman makes puts women down as a class. So to these people a woman singing about a traditionally feminine role is putting other women down. This is what happens when people don't think their ideologies through. Liberal feminism is more about individual choice, yes, but second wave and radical feminism is about women as a collective. That's why nobody bat an eye when Lorde said that Lana's music is unhealthy for young women or every music critic I watched said that she's a bad "representation" for women.
      Don't be so superficial when she said "look" like me the last thing that came to mind was her physical appearance. Stay at home moms often express that they are being judged really harshly mostly by other women.

      Raise your hand if you're the crazy neolib in the room? Of course we have to bring race into it, even though it literally has nothing at all to do with race...a north korean woman in north korea has it way worse than a black woman in the United States, in general, but seriously...what is your fucking point? The mental gymnastics you people go through to link everything to race, imaginary privilege and quite literally made up intersectionality must be exhausting...unless you're just one of the dumb ass "woke" playing follow the leader who doesn't even understand what your own terminology actually means, which is about 98% of you. Lana is popular with women everywhere because there's a very primitive undertone of the relations between men and women that most artists are unable to articulate. Since she lays it out on the table without man bashing, it's just not feminist enough for you. For a culture of inclusion, and by that I mean your liberalism AND feminism...you people sure are quick to point out when someone is too white or not quite feminist (or should I say angry) enough for your liking. You neolibs are the most close-minded, exclusionary group of jerk offs that have ever existed. You spend an awful lot of time congratulating yourselves for being "woke" while being so ridiculous that it's impossible to imagine any real change could come of any of it. You guys have done so much damage by preaching to extremes and socially castrating anyone who doesn't live up to you that YOU have driven real progress back 50 years. Normal people have no choice but to dig in and resist because you don't want meaningful change, you want your BS dogma. People like you are the reason I now lean conservative after 22 years of voting blue. Congrats on destroying yourselves from within.

      Lol. Don't act like the modern wave of feminism doesn't demonise and scoff at traditional femininity and women who are more submissive or who want to be housewives. They're told they have 'ingrained misogyny', told that that real feminity is making your own money and being strong and on your hustle. Just look at all the representation of feminism and femininity in modern pop culture and mass media. It's the 30 something wine-drinking millennial who don't need no man and sleeps around and explores herself and listens to W.A.P. There are whole subreddits dedicated to making fun on traditional women's RUclips channels like Mrs Midwest. So don't be disingenuous by saying that feminism isn't about pushing out women who want to be traditionally feminine, because in today's age it absolutely is. I say this as a boyfriend to a woman who experienced all of that just because she wanted a more traditional lifestyle

    I think she perceives herself as a deep, thoughtful, melancholy artist in a sea of vapid, hyper-sexual, obnoxious, fake-confident pop divas, and that feminism is just Lizzo shaking her ass and Ariana singing about her exes. I think her shallow understanding of feminism, and maybe her reluctance to confront the actual tenets or history of feminism, turns her away from it and makes her uncomfortable when people want to hold her to the standards she hasn't bothered to/wanted to ingest and learn. I think she'd rather not think too hard about it, and when she does try to make a point regarding feminism, she ends up retreading ground that feminists have actually already covered. Noah Ball she literally dragged them down by saying that “unlike them”, who sing about sex and stuff, aka unserious stuff, she writes about being embodied and having beautiful relationships, aka serious stuff. lana always gets shit ton of criticism for the music she makes and so has all the rights to speak out about that, but instead of exposing journalists and magazines who are the main problem she name dropped other women (including ariana, whom she had collaborated with), which was awkward and only showed her self-centered personality. she could’ve worded it a different way, really.

    Lana Fans when they still can't accept that Lana is problematic and keeps on finding loopholes and excuses for her tone deaf behavior because she's just the 'aesthetic' quirky it girl that can't do no wrong and then easily gets offended by someone's own opinion: 😱🤨🤬😤

      This is gonna sound so ironic.
      I or we I guess, never said she wasnt problematic. Every celeb has done some f8cked up shit, and no one is ever right. Im just saying, i genuinely dont think shes a bad person. I met her, shes kind, shes nice and yes she has a horrible way of expressing her opinions but that doesnt mean shes not entitled to her own opinion.
      Being aesthetic and "quirky" like that is her image, so it makes sense she would try to maintain that, dont you agree?

      Black Knight Fool Broski sorry to break to ya but I'm straight and not feminist and is still realizing she was wrong for what she said some people have leadership qualities and some people don't those people who have leadership qualities tend to get farther in life so I don't understand why she is whining because she isn't getting "success" what she is saying doesn't make sense because because she has plenty of fame and money, and doesn't need to be at the top to be successful

    She really tried to make it sound like she was admiring the artists she listed... she reduced their music to such superficial concepts, and even if it’s true, she juxtaposed herself as clearly better because she wasn’t singing about those same topics but instead was berated for singing about being a “delicate” (ugh the over usage of that word I cringe) woman. She really said I’m better because I don’t show off my body. Just let women do what they want. Ultimately I do think feminism is different for everyone because it’s about empowering women in however they feel comfortable with. No one said she has to be “strong,” but it is obviously a popular way for women to empower themselves right now because women have been forced or expected to be “delicate” and “fragile” for so many centuries as Lana describes herself. She can be a feminist in her passive and domestic self, but she shouldn’t bash other women for feeling sexually liberated in how they express themselves. She really has a superiority complex... I do like her music though. She just needs to understand that no one really cares about “making space” for “fragile women” in feminism because that’s been so widely accepted for so long. It’s not something women have had to fight for. But again, she can do whatever and be however she wants because if that’s what makes her feel comfortable and empowered so be it.

      Lana used to sing about the same thing.

      "women have been forced or expected to be “delicate” and “fragile” for so many centuries as Lana describes herself." Except this is only the case for white women(like Lana). Black women have always been forced to be the "strong Black woman" who relies on no one but herself and doesn't have any emotions or vulnerability. It is also used to masculinize us because being strong is associated with masculinity due to sexism and it is used to say that Black women don't deserve to be treated with gentleness or kindness like other(namely white) women. So for Lana to label herself as more delicate and contrast herself with "stronger" women who "show off their body" and name majority Black women to do that, is incredibly racist and anti-feminist. You can be soft and feminine without being weak but in Lana's case she is just using that to uphold her white femininity and attack Black women by dismissing them, pigeonholing them, and stereotyping them.
