Watched it last night, it was great! I enjoyed hearing your take on parasocial relationships, and being able to appreciate the connection between fans/creator while acknowledging that you don’t really know each other.
Have you discussed the recent Lizzo situation? I know you talked about her in the past, but there's been a lot more context and I'd be interested in whatever you'll have to say. Or you can discuss how Tiffany Haddish seems to have made a comeback despite the severe allegations made against her (the plaintiffs dropped the lawsuit, but that still doesn't excuse what those kids went through)
The misogyny Katherine Ryan received for raising an alarm about a predator in U.K. comedy that “is an open secret” in 72 hours from these allegations surfacing was insane. …. If you don’t know, Katherine Ryan is a Canadian comedian based mostly in the U.K.. Katherine revealed in a discussion with Sara Pascoe (a fellow comedian) on her show ‘Backstage with Katherine Ryan’ in 2022 that they both knew of a male comedian who is a predator. Pascoe went onto say that she had heard an audience member come up to her one time at a tv show recording to say “that’s my r*pist (a comedian she worked with).” She called RB a predator in 2018 on a tv show set when she had heard several stories from women accusing him of serious misconduct. This has been kept under wraps. Katherine Ryan then mentioned this again in an interview with Louis Theroux in 2022. These got picked up and she said she couldn’t name the predator because she knew she’d get destroyed by this person in the media considering the power of his lawyers- her career stability and her kids’ futures would be ruined. With this documentary coming out in the past week, Katherine Ryan has received very misogynistic hate and has had her claims be dismissed by some people because of her sexual history (which is nobody’s business). Love and support to RB’s victims. I hope you all get justice you deserve 💜
I don't get why people use someone like Katherine's sexual history as a reason to question her. Like, to me, a women who is sexually active in a community will obviously be aware of the creeps and threats within that community.
@@CJMGalaxy And flash-while she comes across in her comedy as having one-night stands, she said in Louis Thoureaux interview that she's never had a one night stand. She just had relationships until she married, like so many of us.
What makes her not be an enabler? This is something I can’t wrap my head around. Why are celebrities given a pass for not blowing the whistle. Same with the Harvey Weinstein case. their excuse is that they would be “black balled” so already famous men and women who had millions in the bank didn’t want to speak out and from the stories, they even brought other future victims to his door step. So they get a free pass because they might not be a celebrity anymore? They get a free pass because they fear they might end up with a regular 9-5 job? I know for a fact that if a none celebrity kept quiet about a serial abuser the internet would drag them through the mud and people acting like they couldn’t be that person and think they should face charges as well.
The fact that he had heads up and put out a statement before the allegations speaks volumes of the power he has which is terrifying because that means there are many more women who have to be quiet because their lives will legitimately be ruined more than it already has. And that that gets passed over when it comes to SA survivors. It's not just the one event, it's everything after that lingers. Women don't come forward immediately for a reason and it's usually because your own sense of peace has to come first and that takes years.
@@Trenchant468 that’s all fine but I also don’t understand why people have problems with women having one night stands? One night stands are consensual sex (if it is not, then it’s just SA, not an one night stand) And how does it affect a woman calling out predators?
It’s very “funny” how he uses his slutty era as an “excuse” of sorts when that’s the exact same thing that would undermine any accusation from any woman 🤦🏼♀️
Right?? I'm sitting here kicking myself, because the lead-up to *my slutty era was no excuse for ever finding this sick b-stard funny 😖😤 and he's trying to wave it all away by rephrasing "boys will be boys!" 🤢
These men always deny, deny, deny and leave this massive paper trail. Andrew Tate was the very same. He bragged about basically being a Webcam pimp, talked about running to his new country because he thought they had looser laws, and then wanted everyone to believe he wasn't being a pimp. Come on, now.
I know, its honestly kind of confusing to me that Andrew Tate's supporters even deny the allegations. I mean, what part of him abusing and trafficking women is at all inconsistent with the persona he's built for himself online? Honestly it would make more sense if they took the angle that the laws are unjust because Tate should be allowed to do whatever he wants to women.
The saddest part about Pearl is even the guys she's so desperately pandering to don't want anything more from her than her than her content validating their misogyny and racism. Pearl is extremely stupid but you don't need to be smart to grift the right.
This misunderstanding some people seem to have that men rape becayse they "need to" as if it's somehow a side effect of not being able to get a woman is disgusting and infantilizing.
@@manderly33 that's exactly my point. When Pearl said "Russel Brand doesn't need to rape anyone" it was a silly copout. People who rape come from all walks of life - sadly. It's not something someone does out of desperation, it's something someone does because of power - which really makes sense when you realize so many people who have courted fame are rapists
This misconception even manifests in the justice system, unfortunately. I asked a prosecutor why someone with seven charges of assault against minors (and many more that police were aware of but unable to prosecute for various reasons) received what seemed like an incredibly short sentence, and was told that one of the mitigating factors was, to paraphrase, that he was just so pathetic that it wasn't like anyone would ever have consensual sex with him. Because I guess predatory losers are the real victims? The same guy also harassed and perved on his neighbour and in that case, no conviction was even recorded and he just got probation, presumably for the same reason. It's absolutely infuriating.
Art teacher here to clarify the baroque art thing. The baroque art is emotionally exaggerated and needless dramatic, so he’s basically down playing the allegations by comparing it to that art movement.
Most people aren't as learned in music, so most equated it to wtf that makes no sense in this context. Being in the legal field, I've not heard of anyone describing criminal allegations in this way. Guy just used a thesaurus and poorly
thank you! That makes sense now. Gave me a pause at first, too because I always associated it with architectural style, never knew of the emotional component of it.
Everytime I hear someone say why did a person (a woman) take so many years to report an assault, i smh head and think about all the women who don’t actually report it at all and have either survived in silence, are being eaten alive by the trauma or become advocates to help victims. Some real vile things are being said about these women and it really isn’t right!
Sadly the myths and victim blaming around abuse continue to be significant barriers to access to justice that need to be stopped and education stepped up

Two things: Russ here “stepped back” because comedian Katherine Ryan was on a TV show called Comedy Roast Battle with him in 2018, and her roast was “you’re a serial rapist,” basically. That never aired but it got around. I think consensus is he took refuge in Joeroganville BECAUSE he knew he was going to get outed eventually. “Baroque” is an art style but it’s also used colloquially to refer to something that’s super elaborate, like the art style itself. Russell’s use of it here is . . . I think he’s intending to make it sound like the documentary laid out some elaborate conspiracy, but it’s what it always is: a number of people claimed he assaulted or abused him, and a lot of people backed them up.
In a legal context baroque makes no sense here. Common snake oil tactic of misusing a term to befuddle and appear more intelligent. But he just used the thesaurus poorly
It was well known on the comedy circuit what he would get up to because when he was on TV, showrunners had a rule that young women were not allowed to be alone with him. So instead of not hiring him, they just reduced the number of female staff
The thing about Russell Brand being a right-wing cospiracy theorist, is that it's also a relatively recent heel turn for him. On top of his career, he was actually known for his very much leftist politics, and it's such a big shift, that people are theorizing that he changed strategies anticipating these type of allegations, to minimize the damage with the new audience.
Yeah I was surprised to see how much his content shifted, but it does make sense that if he attracts this right-wing audience that they would come to his defense.
It's always fun to be reminded that in 21st century when a woman gets brave enough to come out and warn other women about a dude that raped her, she'll be called awful things and her rapist will get praised. . Men are so not worried about potentially defending a rapist. It always makes me convinced they're no better. D'Angelo always actually standing with the women is one of the only reasons I believe it's actually not all men...but the rest is not making it easy

if he did that...he's a piece of sht and should get life in prison. But its kinda weird how the governament sends letters to all social platforms and tell them to demonetize him.
UK parliment asked social media platforms to censor him amidst the allegations but they'll protect other rapists, so it's not like they dont have incentive. I've watched his content for a long time and he has exposed A LOT of shit. That being said that doesnt mean he didn't do it
I thought he'd already been publicly accused like a decade ago. I was just a kid back then and I remember everyone talking about how he was a major creep and predator
I never knew he was a creep, but I never understood why so many people liked this guy back in the 2000s. He always seems a bit icky to me, even when I was a kid. I didn't know why at the time.
Russell Brand has always been this annoyance that shows up late to any popular movement and takes all the attention for himself. During the Indie Sleaze era of the mid '00s, he came in late and was the sleaziest dude in the room. During the Hardcore Atheist era of the early 2010's, he came in late and instantly became the loudest atheist in the room. Now during today's Everything Is A Conspiracy Theory era he comes in the room late and is the loudest conspiracy theorist in the room. And folks out there give audience to this clown every single time
I remember seeing a video of his waaaay long ago, like 2020 or smth, and he was talking about how men should behave, talking about how having a daughter changed him or whatever. That didn't have many views at the time. Imagine my surprise hearing that he has a channel that consistently gets over 600k views on every video.
He really isn't a clown if youre not extremely shallow and listen to him rather than just looking at him. If he did any of this he's disgusting and the most convincing fraud of all time. But if he didn't, the way the media is handling this is actually horrifying.
@@islabee94He’s a clown because he posts mindless conspiracy theories to appeal to the gullible such as yourself. Secondly public opinion is not a court of law. I definitely believe he did that kind of thing many times if he could do it so easily and not even worry about repercussions. Additionally the media started this investigation FOUR years ago well before he made this change to idiot conspiracy theorist. About 10 years ago I loved Russel Brand's content. I am very left-wing, so if anyone wants to know how that happens I'd love to illustrate: I was 19 and at first I enjoyed his movies for the comedy. Then I liked that the character he played in movies (spoiled, rich jerk that didn't respect women and other people) was a character he played in an *ironic and satirical* way, a satire of the person that he literally used to be. Then I found his facebook videos and I interpreted his ideas as left-wing: having critical thinking skills, media literacy, being anti-capitalist, anti-mainstream media, anti-establishment, and he was also spiritual and seemed to encourage self-awareness and self-actualization. But now looking back, and seeing his current content and the accusations, I realise his views were "anti-media, anti-establishment, anti-mainstream" in a RIGHT-wing way, not left wing. And the character he played in a satirical way was maybe not as far in his past as he pretended. My friend has a theory about a "hippie to right-wing pipeline" that I think Russel fits into a bit. The hippie that challenges the status quo becomes the right-wing conspirator who challenges it. Don't believe everything the media says (i.e., promoting right-wing interests) becomes don't believe everything the media says (i.e., vaccines and, conveniently, his r*pe accusations). “I think a lot of times strong men want an equal but then they get that equal and they can’t handle the equalness”. That’s a pretty astute observation on how insecure some men are. As a great person once said, masculinity is not in decline, patriarchy is. When men are judged partly due their superiority to the women they are in relationship with, they some react negatively because they find it emasculating.
Honestly, if people knew just how stringent the defamation and libel legislation is in the UK then they would understand that the Times would never have published these allegations if they could not thoroughly back them up with evidence. The fact that Russel Brand has, not once, said anything about suing the Times says everything you need to know.
Tucker and Tate just want Russel on their podcast/webshows. They don’t care whether or not he’s guilty or innocent, they just want to appeal to his fanbase and make themselves seem more legitimate by proxy.
When that investigation dropped, I genuinely thought an old article was doing the rounds again. I would have sworn we'd been through these allegations a good several years ago.
sometimes.... I miss being surprised by news like this. Hearing about Russel Brand i'm just like... yeah. he just played himself in a bunch of movies and now we know that for sure.
This has been known for a long time. Katherine Ryan, a comedian who’s been on the circuit for years and years, said years ago that there’s a predator on the circuit who she avoids like the plague whose name is two things you can do to cattle (i.e. rustle and brand).
When my mom said "Have you heard about Russel Brand?" My first reaction was "Has he SA someone?" Like, I'm not saying 100% he's guilty, just that I absolutely will not be surprised if he is.
I haven't heard about Brand in years but when I braved Twitter a few days ago and saw Musk and IMC or whatever his name is agreeing that he was probably innocent I immediately assumed he wasn't I don't like that there are situations where I base my worldview on the opposite of what people I dislike think to be the case but in some cases they're just so awful and it just keeps happening. Especially with politics. Some networks are so blatantly biased and lie while simultaneously complaining the opposing networks are biased it just becomes easier to short-cut yourself to the truth by going with the opposite of what they're saying.
Here's the thing... I do believe that Russell Brand earnestly thinks he did nothing wrong, or at least nothing criminal. Like, he just has that vibe of a guy who thinks everyone is falling over themselves just to be in his presence. And that's the part that really disturbs me!
I think what a lot of people need to understand is the libel laws in the UK are very strict. These allegations came from 2 very well respected institutions (channel 4 and the sunday times), in the UK you CANNOT publish in a newspaper and air on television accusations about someone without the accusations being air tight in terms of evidence. The documentary and the article have been in the works for a year, half of this time would have been working with lawyers going over absolutely everything with a fine tooth comb. Russell brand was notified about this 8 days ahead of time, which in the world of the media and press is practically an age. UK laws are so strict if there had been the slightest whiff of untruth that’s could be just slightly suggested this documentary and article would not have aired, but they obviously did. The documentary and article would not have legally been allowed to be seen if the the things been accused could not be held up in a court of law
Growing up in the UK, he was everywhere on British tv and he always gave off creepy vibes. I think there was even a situation where I believe Jonathan Ross lost his talk show on BBC due to an inappropriate incident on radio which involved Brand.
I remember watching a Russell Brand movie, Arthur, as the in-flight film. I came away feeling like he was icky. He seemed to have too much fun doing terrible things as his character, and the moments he was supposed to be sweet it was really forced, just his whole aura. Turns out I was only 12 when I watched it. This dude exudes creep so hard that children can notice it lmao
I don't remember anything but I think I was the same, I think I watched the mighty boosh with friends and something about him put me off, I don't remember it or why but I always got weird impressions from him from then onwards. Either that or just vibes from him in general that the small media appearances I witnessed? But I suppose it makes sense with how obvious he was about who he was and how much he got away with anyway, that even kids would get his bad vibes Edit: I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of the wrong comedian with that reference so if so disregard that bit
I feel like what’s missing from this is that he already had a means of dodging criticism back at the peak of his fame: he was one of the only celebrities at the time openly discussing not only his history of alcoholism/drug use (he was one of the biggest voices following any winehouse’s death as they were close), but his mental health as well (he had whole comedy shows about his bipolar disorder). He was kind of an icon for neurodivergent people at the time- and I think that led a lot of people to accept his clearly bad behavior. He was “””crazy””” after all- how much of what he was saying and doing was mania was the general discourse at the time. I feel like a lot of people who exclusively knew him at that stage felt betrayed (but also worried for him) when he went down the conspiracy theory route, but I think all this really shows that so much of his openness was never meant to foster societal/self acceptance, it was always a way to dodge ever seriously discussing his behavior.
I absolutely love your short videos! Packed with information, more emotions like anger (which is completely normal in situations like these), but also providing appropriate comedic reliefs despite the heavy topic
My friend read me a headline about these accusations coming out, and I was like, "Wait, I thought he already had allegations against him." And then a few hours later The Onion posted my new favorite headline: Nation Could Have Sworn Russell Brand Was Already Convicted S*x Offender.
Im so glad i clicked on this. Thank you so much. Its a relief reading sane and logical comments. I was sexually assaulted more than once and the second one was actually a huge fan of Brand he went for round 2 and did an act that Brand mentioned in the documentary and i was reeling. Ive cried myself to sleep most nights this week because of the witch hunt types and people excusing him. i think im starting to come out the other side now and its because of people like you guys. Im grateful.
All the best for your recovery. It's good creeps get finally called out, I just wish this would happen way before they find so many victims. It is heart wrenching people like Lindemann still are part of Rammstein and the rock circuit at large. As a somewhat decent or at least slightly decent human being, as a male, as a metal head, as a German I can't help feeling ashamed for so many of us as a society, parts of communities, part of a demographic, letting that slip - and worse, shielding and defending that shit, with the worst "arguments" possible. 2023 has proven once again, how much of a rape culture we live in, how wide-spread and deep support and tolerance for it runs, and it is hitting closer to home than ever for me.
I used to think he was like a based guy because he had the westboro baptist church on his show and debated them which was pretty cool for an edgy reddit atheist teen like me back then, but apparently he's always been a misogynist creep, and pretty publically so.
I can understand why you might think that but I can assure you that a totally inaccurate assessment of his character. The mainstream media are blackballing him because he is a hugely brilliant anti-establishment independent journalist and is a massive financial threat not only to mainstream media, but also cooperations, big pharma, the military industrial complex, the war in Ukraine, Covid, etc. He has exposed a great amount that our governments (with the support of mainstream media) have hidden from us and it was just a matter of time before they took him down. ♥️
My Mum has been a fan of his for a number of years so I am really dreading when this comes up in conversation. If she takes his side I will have to distance myself for a while for my mental health 😢
Baroque used in this context is not uncommon. He means the allegations are exaggerated, embellished, and convoluted. This is to denote the allegations are made of much flourish, but are without substance. So it is clear, this is not a defense of Brand. This is clear up the confusion D’Angelo expressed
You have absolutely restored my faith in humanity (and these comments too). I’m in the UK, and can tell you that these rumours have circulated around for years. Female comedians here have been known to have WhatsApp groups warning one another about predators on the comedy circuit. His name (among others also well known in UK) have been mentioned many times. It’s very telling that he has been systematically aligning himself with the alt right for some years now. Because he knew it was coming.
Yep, when dispatches first announced the focus of the upcoming show (without explicitly naming Brand), so many British comedians on Twitter implied that they thought it was likely to be either about Brand or David Walliams. He clearly had a reputation.
When I've heard baroque used in this type of context, it kind of means they used lots of fancy words to say very little of substance, like baroque music repeats fancifully on the same theme, repeating phrases, etc.
Not justifying what Brand did, because he’s a messed up creep. I read in his autobiography that he was molested as a child by his piano teacher and that he used to go with his father to Asian countries and was made to sleep with prostitutes when he was a teenager. I feel like events like these deeply affect your view on s*x which explains why he’s the way he is. It’s just sad all around - praying for his victims ❤
An explanation is not an excuse. As terrible as his childhood seemed, it's not an excuse for what he did. If every woman who'd been sexually assaulted went around doing the same thing to others we wouldn't have a functioning society... I think someone with so many resources (money, connections) has very little excuse not to get help at the very least (through therapy for example) and instead make the decision to take it out on others.
@@claraaralc I agree, an explanation is not an excuse. That was not what I was trying to imply with my initial comment - apologies if my wording didn’t come across correct.
@@claraaralc Positions of power are proven to be filled with psycopath, not figuratively. Literally. postions of power are also proven to decrease one's empathy for others. Once in those positions you can expect even more dogmatism, even less growth so... idk, expecting growth because they have "more ressources" when they're exactly lead to the opposite by their power is... surprising to me.

Pascoe went onto say that she had heard an audience member come up to her one time at a tv show recording to say “that’s my r*pist (a comedian she worked with).”
She called RB a predator in 2018 on a tv show set when she had heard several stories from women accusing him of serious misconduct.
One night stands are consensual sex (if it is not, then it’s just SA, not an one night stand)

Honestly it would make more sense if they took the angle that the laws are unjust because Tate should be allowed to do whatever he wants to women.

This misunderstanding some people seem to have that men rape becayse they "need to" as if it's somehow a side effect of not being able to get a woman is disgusting and infantilizing.
Also Russell Brand could absolutely get women. Clearly consensual relationships were not what he wanted.
Misogyny treats men like baby's and women their toys

Two things:
Russ here “stepped back” because comedian Katherine Ryan was on a TV show called Comedy Roast Battle with him in 2018, and her roast was “you’re a serial rapist,” basically.
Appreciate the Baroque comment... need to read all definitions sometimes.
In a legal context baroque makes no sense here. Common snake oil tactic of misusing a term to befuddle and appear more intelligent. But he just used the thesaurus poorly

I don't like that there are situations where I base my worldview on the opposite of what people I dislike think to be the case but in some cases they're just so awful and it just keeps happening.

Uk age of consent is insane without Romeo and Juliet laws. Allows predictors to openly act like that
I feel like what’s missing from this is that he already had a means of dodging criticism back at the peak of his fame: he was one of the only celebrities at the time openly discussing not only his history of alcoholism/drug use (he was one of the biggest voices following any winehouse’s death as they were close), but his mental health as well (he had whole comedy shows about his bipolar disorder).

Tbh, I've only seen this done once that I can remember, in an Indigo Girls song. "You were so baroque, all of those words just to tell me 'no.'"
i thought andrew tate was like already in prison, im baffled he's even on twitter TO defend anyone... but i guess he's rich so that was dumb of me huh
the trial (and others new trials) is still in process.
Justice is slow for wealthy people.
I had to quit teaching my yoga class at a studio because the owner wouldn’t get vaccinated or adhere to any CDC standards. She fell I love with brand when I fell out. That studio became an absolute vector. Spreading illness and misery to the community all to preempt an inevitable me too drubbing. So many intersections.
10:03 , after hearing that, i had to step away and take in some sunlight before i could continue watching
Just here to say.
No * cough * nope no wayy *cough cough* TOTALLY NOT A CULT .
Absolutely not! We would never Sacrifice the alpha males to our dark lord! Never would happen here on this channel
You know you're fucked when the psychopath who renamed an app "X" is defending you💀
„Not a groomer, just a loser.“
Are they mutually exclusive?
Well no, just look at the person who said that.
The channel 4 dispatches documentary made me cry
I also have a conspiracy theory:
He anticipated these allegations to come out at some point so he made a conspiracy theory channel in order to cry about them 'coming to get him because he's getting too close to the truth' as his comment section believes.
How many times do we need to be reminded…
When someone shows you who they are, be wary. When they TELL you who they are…believe them. (RB’s books-Booky Wook 1 and 1)
The only thing they could defend me from is themselves and even then I don’t think they’d succeed🥱
Glad for today’s not a cult gathering!
4:33 literally 😭 russel brand just says random big words and people think he’s a genius
my only thought is that i would never bring up pearl in any capacity here on out. she lives off outrage and shock value. the best thing to do is ignore her
