From the classic rock era, the only other debut album that springs to mind that one might say rivals Boston's debut for sheer # of hits on a debut album, in my humble opinion, might be Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut Pronounced that gave us such classics as Simple Man, Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, I Ain't The One, Things Goin' On, and of course the iconic masterpiece Freebird, making it also a legendary debut album from one of rock's truly legendary, iconic bands. But Boston's debut album, without question, is also right there at the top of the list for iconic debut albums, and if I'm not mistaken may be the most successful debut album ever for a band from the classic rock era.
I lived this song in it's prime when I was 18. A disco we went to in Cincinnati would open the night with this song on weekends. Some of the most cherished days of my life. ❤
You will appreciate the fact this was recorded in a basement studio. No synths, all organs and played by Tom Scholz. The spaceship sounds were made on effects custom built by Scholz.
Ditto, same comments I came to add. This album is one of, if not, the greatest rock album ever. Not a bad track on it. You should dive into the history and story of Tom Scholz and the making of the is album. Great stuff!!! 🔥
What's more amazing is Tom Scholz wrote this album, mixed this album and recorded this album playing every instrument, except for drums...in his BASEMENT. He's an M.I.T. graduate he even created the effects you are hearing.
Everything that's being said is true about Tom Schultz recording and engineering everything about this album but the final mixing and everything was done in Los Angeles I've actually heard the raw recordings by Tom Schultz before they were mixed fully...
You’ve probably heard this before, but ALL of the vocals are done by singer, Brad Delp. ALL lead, ALL backing, and ALL harmonies. All just layers of Brad.
Isn't it perfection? I LOVE to see people react to these. Incredible artistry - soaring guitars, soaring vocals -- what's absolutely not to love about Boston?
released 8/25/76 ...arguably the greatest debut album ever produced its believed to be the only 1970s album that still had every track in regular rotation on classic rock radio into the 2000s
Tom Shultz was the composer and creator of all of the Boston songs. He worked at a camera company and went on his own and outfitted is basement into the studio where they did all the music
This entire album is a masterpiece and when you get the backstory which I hope you do you will understand it really needs to be up there as one of the best debut albums ever.
Never get tired of hearing Brad. He's right there with Freddie and Steve Perry. You could argue even greater given he does all the harmonies and back up vocals on the album. Nice reaction.

One of the greatest debut albums of ALL TIME. Foreplay is EPIC ... Tom Sholz genius with the amazing Brad Delp on vocals. Head Phones would enhance your experience indeed.

Dude... you just need to listen to the whole album, sides 1 & 2 (I'm an old dude). Every song on this record is a classic. I never tire of listening to it.
I'm so glad you appreciated this song. I wore this whole album on cassette tape out back in college and it's still one of my all-time favorite bands today.
Hitch a Ride next please....harmonies, great drums, powerful organ, unbelievable dueling guitar outro...this one may make you tear up. It has that effect for some reason. This one makes my top 5 Boston songs. In your words.... "Let's Go"!
This is one of the greatest Debut albums ever recorded. Every song got radio airplay. There aren't many bands that can say that about any of their albums. Boston did it twice.
Recorded in a Basement down the street from me. Determination, sweat, a “we are making this album if it kills us” attitude. The quality is incredible! This took sorcery! Now anybody can record music.
This album was my first to purchase as a teenager back when it first came out. I love this song so much that 36 yrs ago I told my wife I wanted it played at my funeral. The whole album is a masterpiece.
The first Boston album is one of the best debut albums of all time. Every song is top tier. My personal favorite is Hitch A Ride. The closing guitar solo is pure magic. You can't go wrong with any track from this album.
Every single song off of that album is a banger, can't wait for you to check out more. Back when this came out, I was a teenager and there was no other band like this. People were blown away by it. Truly one of a kind. It arrived in 1976
This album is awesome. When I was younger. I would clean my brother's house while he was at work. I would put this album on. Turn it up. And, I got the house cleaned. I love this album.
My Mom met Boston once after going to their concert, made them pizza, smoked a joint with them, they gave her a belt buckle that she wore constantly after that!! lol They were awesome, the soundtrack of my teen years!
When it comes to Boston, it's not just the vocals, especially with Brad Delp, but their instrumentals are just fantastic. Others have already mentioned of how they first started recording in a basement.
Fun fact: This is from their 1976 debut album (Boston) and is the creation of mad scientist/guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Tom Scholz. Scholz graduated from MIT with a Master's degree in engineering. He was an engineer for the Polaroid Co and designed the Polaroid "one-step" instant camera, while writing and recording the band's debut album in his basement. He originally lied to the record company about the whereabouts of the recording because they were skeptical about him doing it at home. At the time of it's release the album was the "highest selling" debut album of all time, selling 76 million copies. It remained that way until Whitney Houston's debut album many years later knocked down it to No 2. Then it dropped again to No 3 when Gun's and Roses' debut took the top spot in 1987. Don't know if anyone else has broken it since. The singer's name was Brad Delp and sadly he took his own life at his home in New Hampshire during the early 2,000s.
Fun fact: The Poloroid "One Step Camera' was invented by Edwin Land in the 40's not by Tom. Fun Fact: All of the Boston records combined did not sell a total of 76 million copies.
What a treat for you to get to experience this for the first time. I remember how blown away I was when I heard this for the first time. I heard it on the radio and cranked it way up. Literally, every single track on this debut album was a radio hit. You've gotta check out the entire album.
Finally got to see these guys when they put out their 3rd album (10 years after this debut). They played the entire "Third Stage" album, then tore through some of the bangers off this and their second album, "Don't Look Back." It was an awesome show and glad I got to see them. 😊
In my college dorm during the fall of 1976, you could hear this album playing somewhere 24/7. I am not exaggerating! It was everywhere. As others have said, one of the greatest debut albums ever!
The album is still to this day, the best selling debut album of all time. Also, it was all the work of one guy, Tom Sholz. Pretty sure I spelled that right. He got help from the drummer and the singer was a friend of his.
I have never met anyone who doesn't burn for this tune. It must have one the broadest appeals in all music. It just HITS in so many ways. The stars simply aligned around this recording.
I believe I was 19 when this "8-track" came out. I was driving a 72 Plymouth Roadrunner at the time and hearing More than a Feeling for the first time, convinced me to buy the tape. What a musical and metaphysical trip that was. This whole album is, as you say, a masterpiece. It's timeless, as all the gods of music have gifted us. This is one of the greatest albums of all time and thank you for your very invested reaction. I enjoyed your epiphany. Rock on!!
Tom Scholtz, the guitarist and founder of the band, wrote and recorded pretty much this entire album in a basement right around the area I live haha! An absolute masterpiece!
It’s amazing how even nearly 50 years later you can immediately tell that it’s genius. They had such a unique sound, you could always tell it was a Boston tune!
So good. This was actually my first ever concert. 1978 (I was 13) Anaheim Stadium. Van Halen then Sammy Hagar then Black Sabbath then Boston. Never forget that day.
@@williamreiser3118 It was. Nobody really knew who Van Halen was, their first album had just dropped and you really got me was the only song they were playing on the radio. Junior year in high school. Driving to the lake with my girl friends at lunch break and cutting the class after. It was spring, driving in a convertible, this blaring. I grew up with great music. I am so lucky.
No synthesizers were used in the making of this album. That sentence was a liner note on the album cover. Tom Shultz was a graduate of MIT and made some of his own guitar effects pedals now known as the Boston sound! Tom recorded most of this album in his own studio in his basement as a demo and the demo was used for the album it was made so well!
@jimcook5711 That is fiction. First off Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home and he co wrote Smokin'. Second, when Boylan heard Toms drum and acoustic instrument tracks he rejected them because they were too amateurish (Boyans word not mine). Boylan hired LA Engineer Paul Grupp to tutor Tom and then Boylan made Tom re-record those tracks. There are a total of 5 people who play at least one instrument track on this record and that includes both of the drummers who played on this record. In addition, Boylan had to do production work on Toms tracks before the record could be mixed at Westlake
"The mix is phenomenal" -- Tom Scholz crafted this entire experience in his basement, playing most of the instruments, building the electronics for the effects, and blending Brad Delp's matchless vocals into an unforgettable layer of sound. There are no words for how much impact this album had when it debuted, and it's still unmatched for overall quality.
@DavidTateVA Not quite. This record was mixed in LA at Westlake Studios by Boylan, Warren Dewey and Tom with assistance from Steve Hodge. According to Boylan mixing this record was a Tug of war because Tom kept burying the vocals and the drums in the mix. Tom pushed the electric guitars and cymbals so hard that Boylan and Dewey had to counter in order to keep Brads vocals from being buried in the mix and for the drums to be in the mix. This resulted in Westlakes then new and top of the line API console being driven into manual compression. All of Brads vocals were recorded at either Capital Studios Studio C or at The Record Plant LA, and one entire song, Let Me Take You Home was recorded at The Record Plant LA. At the end of the day approximately 25% of the tracks on this record were recorded by Boylan in LA. Tom does not like to talk about this fact but when Boylan heard the drum and acoustic instrument tracks that Tom submitted, he rejected them because they were too amateurish (Boylans word not mine) to use on the record. Boylan then hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio and tutor Tom on how to record drums and acoustic instrument properly as well as proper mic placement. At the end of the day, Boylan had more of an effect on how this record sounds than Tom lets on.
When I was going to school at Indiana University in the late 70s, this album was blaring out of every window on campus so much of the time. This and Frampton Comes Alive.
I was 14 years old when this came out, it changed the music world. Saw them live in 1978 after the Don't Look Back album release. Still the best concert I have ever seen and was the best $6 I ever spent.
I was young when this album dropped, but I swiped it from my pops. But when the 80s rolled around, my friends and I were still jamming to the 70s music. This song takes me back to those summer nights at all the hangout spots sharpening our social skills while looking for all those boys our momma's warned us about! 😂❤
A band I'm currently in will be adding this song, with Foreplay included, to our set list and we will play it well, guaranteed. All of us have played it in past bands and now we finally have the vocalist to bring it to life...rock on!
Listen to the entire album. One of the top 3 best selling debut albums of all time in any genre. One of the best mixed albums too, by writer and musician on every instrument, but drums and vocals: Tom Scholz. He was an MIT engineer who invented audio equipment to produce effects not heard on any other album. One of his tricks to creating the Boston sound was playing guitars on high level right in front of the speakers to intentionally create feedback that normally would be avoided. He made it sound beautiful! My favorite secular band of all time. My favorite song of theirs is: PEACE OF MIND. Tom was trained to play classical music on piano, and this album tips the hat to classical composition in this song, but another great song for dark classical rock music is: SMOKIN’. To me, every instrument line on every song is worth its own reaction video, because there’s so much masterful composition and musicianship going on. It’s great to hear well educated people like yourself react because this is one of the best technical mixes of all time. It’s worth studying its history and impact on the rock industry. Just look up the Rockman amp, invented by Tom, and see how many great bands used it to make hits. Keep rockin’!
"One of his tricks to creating the Boston sound was playing guitars on high level right in front of the speakers to intentionally create feedback that normally would be avoided" Many guitar players before Tom did this. This is nothing special
In High School (1976-1979) my best friend and I would DJ dances and small parties for extra money on the side. We started every gig with Foreplay/Long Time. We lived in Colorado Springs. The Olympic Training Center asked us to DJ there one weekend. At the time we had no idea that the hockey team from the Miracle on Ice in 1980 was in attendance. What a time to be alive.
Most of the intro was recorded in a walk-in coat closet in his basement. It helped achieve the surround sound with the organ effects. He found the sound was better with the coats hung up as it absorbed more of the range.
I was a teenager in the 70’s driving around in my “souped” up 1969 Mach 1 Mustang blasting Skynyrd, Zeppelin, Marshall Tucker, Boston, The Outlaws, Rush, Aerosmith, and many others. The greatest musical time period to be a teenager. Nothing like it. Enjoy the journey Steven🤘.
Boston's debut album "Boston" was released in August 25, 1976. Every cut on this album made airplay on all 3 Rock Stations in Detroit. Yes, I'm that old...
Thanks for reacting to this. I was 11 years old when this song came out in 1976. I had a very nice set of headphones I had gotten for my birthday that I hooked up to my stereo and would listen to my local rock station (WROQ in Charlotte) every night in bed just before I went to sleep. Pitch dark, eyes closed. It was magical. The night I heard this song when it was first released, I was mesmerized from start to finish. It was a journey, sounds I had never heard in a song. It was the first song I ever heard that made me say, “I HAVE to get that album tomorrow”. The next day, my mom took me to the mall and it was the first album I bought with my own money, lol. My friends, girlfriend, and I loved attending concerts when I was in high school/college. It was one of the things we loved doing together. My wife did the same thing during that time period as well. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I cannot describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young in the 70’s/80’s compared to today. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was much more carefree, and the music was spectacular. Our 4 adult children (29-33) love 70’s/80’s music just as we do. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.
i’m the same age as you, and everything the same. I can’t believe that we grew up in such a time where there was such creative incredible music, and artists all around all the time. Now in the year 2024 it’s like avoid of music. Where did all the incredible creative artist go. I’m so glad to have grown up when I did
The album was recorded and mixed in Tom Scholz basement studio. No regular guitar amps either. They went through his Rockman system he designed. Tom Scholz was the organs & guitar player. He was an MIT electrical engineer designer as well
There are certain albums that are "True Grand Slams" from beginning to end like this one,, Black Sabbath "Paranoid",, Robin Trower "Bridge Of Sighs",, Steely Dan "Can't Buy A Thrill",, Fleetwood Mac "Rumours",, Rush "2112",, Peter Gabriel "So",, Counting Crows "August & Everything After",, Matisyahu "Youth",, Etc..Etc.
This was my anthem for leaving "home" for a new place somewhere far away to make a new start at college or work. Pumped me up to the long journey and new beginnings. Heavy radio play in the late 70s, but one of my brothers recorded a cassette from his vinyl before he left home in 78, so that was what I had for a such a long time.

Tom recorded most of this album in his own studio in his basement as a demo and the demo was used for the album it was made so well!
Those spaceships on the album cover are actually upside down guitars. This was a mind blowing album during my high school years.
Foreplay is my 2nd favorite Boston song, with "Smokin'" topping the list.
Tom fing Shulz did it all. The guitar player wrote and recorded it all before a label touched it.
@@neechee5150 Great info -- thanks for replying.
What an unreal talented man. Mr. Sholtz. So Smart. And with Brad Delp singing its for sure top tier. Best vocalist & guitarist EVER.
One of the best albums from the 70’s
The entire Boston album is a masterpiece
1976. It was called an Organ😊
The best engineered, produced album ever. Not a bad song on it
The album was done in Tom's home studio, garage i think. They actually used his recordings for this album.
I bought the album when it was first released back in ‘76. I would listen to the entire album for hours on end.
When I was going to school at Indiana University in the late 70s, this album was blaring out of every window on campus so much of the time. This and Frampton Comes Alive.
This album is worth a full listening to. There is not one weak song on it.
I was 14 years old when this came out, it changed the music world. Saw them live in 1978 after the Don't Look Back album release. Still the best concert I have ever seen and was the best $6 I ever spent.
Of all of the great bands out of Boston and there are MANY they are #1
not my personal favorite.
But the BEST.
Best debut album ever! every song is great with so much talent
I was young when this album dropped, but I swiped it from my pops. But when the 80s rolled around, my friends and I were still jamming to the 70s music. This song takes me back to those summer nights at all the hangout spots sharpening our social skills while looking for all those boys our momma's warned us about! 😂❤
Definitely can't go wrong with Boston. Immaculate debut album. Every song is awesome. 2nd one was really good too. ❤❤❤

Many guitar players before Tom did this.
I saw Boston 3 times, one of those times was at Angel Stadium with Black Sabbath and Van Halen. That concert was crazy.
That sounds so EPIC!! 🔥🔥
Jealous, here! A ‘69 Mach 1? I bet you wish you still had that! Or, maybe you do…
You’re right. I wish I still had it😢.
Simply one of, if not the, greatest straight ahead rock and roll bands of all time.
Boston's debut album "Boston" was released in August 25, 1976. Every cut on this album made airplay on all 3 Rock Stations in Detroit. Yes, I'm that old...
Brad Delp is the lead singer. From what i understand all the back up harmonies are all Brad with his voice layered.
The weird thing is, all songs are a work of art. The album is a masterpiece.
The album cuts are still played on the radio today all bangers
I like that Freudian Slip “This is a Masterpiece. This is going on the play list right after I’m done “Feeling” um Filming! :)
Haha 🤣
Really appreciate you sharing all that and going down memory lane! So cool how music can take us back! Thanks for watching and have a great day! 😁
i’m the same age as you, and everything the same. I can’t believe that we grew up in such a time where there was such creative incredible music, and artists all around all the time. Now in the year 2024 it’s like avoid of music. Where did all the incredible creative artist go. I’m so glad to have grown up when I did
More Than a Feeling Will melt your brain. A band would kill for one masterpiece in a career - Boston put TWO on their debut album.
@@claimguy Stephen already reviewed More Than A Feeling and he called it possibly the best song ever 🤩‼️
Loving your stuff man. I like the fact that you don't over-analyze songs even though you are a musician and could talk more. Love your accent too!
Really appreciate it! 😁
