I was lucky enough to see them twice. 1st time was my 15th bday. My best friend’s Dad was a very rich, huge Van Halen fan. So they asked me to go for my Bday. Flew me out to Colorado with them. As soon as we got there, His Dad said we Needed to get a very specific Shirt. Had Eddie’s guitar on it. Found out why after the concert. He bought back stage passes. Met them all, but meeting Eddie, was UNREAL to me. Michael Anthony, and Alex made sure Eddie knew it was my Birthday. Got signed drum sticks. Picks. And a Beautiful "Roadie” jacket, with all their signatures. But Eddie signed a Tambourine, with a very kool "Happy Birthday”. What a gift! Still have both. Was only able to watch next live concert.
Got to see Van Halen Live 16 times and Ed blew me away every time...Not only is He the Greatest Guitarist EVER but also the Coolest...Fom that Beautiful guitar with the Best Guitar tone in history to the Dart behind the Low E string and lets not forget his smile...Man that smile, it was like he knew the secret to everything but wasnt ready to share it with the rest of us mere mortals...R.I.P Edward
Should have saw it live! I had the privilege to see him live 4 times and it's mind blowing every time I saw him. I've probably watched this video at least a hundred times just to watch people's reactions to it. There will never be another EVH! RIP Eddie, You are truly missed in the world of Rock and Roll. Gone but you never will be forgotten. Your music and the music that hasn't been released will live on. Thank you for all the good times and my memories.
I'm 65 years old now but when I was 18 years old their debut album came out and that was in 1978.When I put that album on and it started playing I thought I was on another planet. It was fresh, different and it made your ass rock. I was dumbfounded on some of the sounds that I was hearing. From that day Van Halen was my favorite American band. I miss Eddie's genius as a player, song writer, his joy in playing and most of all l miss his smile and playfulness. He was amazing to watch was he not? RIP Eddie. As far as I'm concerned you are the "Goat." Thanks for the reply Robert. Glad to hear from another fan of the Goat. Rock til you drop.
I was in Navy AOCS bootcamp, we got to watch it live piped in as a treat. At that point I knew I was gonna graduate, and my Marine drill instructors were becoming really cool with us because we were about to graduate. I had 120 people in my company and sister company to start and only 38 of us graduated. This concert and a pizza party with some Cokes was the treat that night. I’ll never forget it. When I finally graduated and got to the main side of the base, I went into a greasy spoon for a burger, it had a juke box. Why Can’t This Be Love was in it. I played it and immediately loved the Hagar era of Van Halen. I am a Dave purist however, but I accepted their decisions to move the band forward. Sammy is the man.
@@foofghtrThank you for your service and I agree about Sammy. Dave was the man as a front man. Never forget the Van Halen classics but Sammy took it another direction and Sammy was the better singer. Great band just hate the way it ended.
I've seen several reactions to this solo, and yours's is the first to notice the classical influence that runs through it, and all of Eddies playing. I'm glad I watched.
I was blessed to shake his hand when I was 12 years old. I traded in my bass and dad bought me a 6 string guitar. I can play about 1% of what he wrote. lol. forever fan
I loved EVH (RIP). I saw Van Halen twice in the DLR era and one thing really stood out to me, Eddie LOVED performing for his fans and the fans loved him. You hear stories about EVH some good, some bad, but one thing for sure, he was an innovator, he was a performer, and he was such a great dude. If you want to know what EVH is all about, look up the Jason Becker video. It will make you cry like a baby.
Many Great Guitarist that are technically fast and intricate but this guy changed the electric guitar world. I have studied him for a large part of my life and people that aren't really into the electric guitar have no idea what Edward Van Halen did to the instrument. He was a creative genious and not only that, Van Halen had the best Rock Music ever! He was probably more proud of the great music the band made than his playing. Man, I really miss him! In my opinion, there will never ever be another Edward Van Halen - NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!
I was lucky enough to see this live in 1983 in Houston Texas....As we were leaving the stadium the whole crowd bunched together like sheep we all started yelling and screaming for what seemed like an eternity....I will remember that concert till the day I die....I had their first album at the age of 12....Blew my mind !!

Great reaction! Eddie was raised on classical music hence the part when everything goes blue and he makes it sound like a violin and a cello. Insane. I grew up with these guys, saw them play at a high school before they did anything. Then they did a backyard gig in Pasadena. There are other greats, Jimmy was great but sadly gone too soon and Stevie is probably the best blue's guitarist ever but Eddie is the greatest and Roll guitarist of all time! RIP Eddie ❤❤
Eruption started out as a warm-up exercise Eddie would do before going on stage, on the debut album in 1978, i think it got put on there as a filler - every concert had and "intermission" where He would do an Eruption, each one was different - off the hip, whatever he felt, as time moved forward, he would add new techniques to it. I saw them in '82 & '84, but this one from '86 is the best i have seen. You should watch the "Smithsonian interview" its worth the watch, and has a lot of information...
Just a little interesting fact that you'll realize as soon as I put it here, Eruption was played once, on the album, and we've never heard it played like that since. Oh, we got to hear parts of it here and there, but as it was on the album, just that one time. I was lucky enough to spend a week with them in 1998 in Tokyo. Search MULLY'S CRYING here on RUclips to hear them sing my name in concert at the Yokohama Arena.

"Such a loss... etc." Such an accurate statement with who I feel is 1 of 2, perhaps 1 of 3 rock and roll guitar players that were ultimate game changers (Chuck Berry is easily in this game changing conversation too. SOOOO many other guitar musicians who could be the other two busts, but these two? Sorry. There is absolutely NO ONE that can make a case to supersede these two galactic 6-string freak shows. I'll challenge anyone to tell me WHAT rock and roll guitar player has had and STILL has the MOST influence on rock and roll guitar more than Edward Van Halen. His pioneering DNA can STILL be heard all around the planet more than ANY GUITARIST, and not with just musicians with a guitar, but with musicians with so many other instruments. One cannot say that with Hendrix (although, he didn't have youtube, VHS, MTV, etc.) and one cannot say that with all the other massive guitar Gods either. King Edward did stuff so innovative, so incredible, so MUCH BETTER than anyone else who tried to emulate his insane perfection of new various techniques..... goodness gracious. I eaily acknowledge SO MANY AWESOME rock and roll guitar players that are in this conversation, but that conversation is not number 1 and number 2., No onw. No words were needed. Did you need her to say more? They both reacted to the "Classical” influence of this solo. 95-100’s of people did not.
I've tried to do that fret tap technique Where Eddie gets that weird whistling pitch harmonic and cant even come close yes. granted i don't exactly have the proper guitar to do it. Eddie had used a bunch of different guitars through the years and he either fully of mostly hade them himself.
