You nailed this reaction. You just watched what is arguably the best guitar solo ever recorded by the most innovative guitarist of a generation, and your first comment was about the joy in Eddie's eyes and his smile. That really says it all.
This was a moment in time that will never be replicated or surpassed by anyone! Not by even more techinically proficient guitarist. Edward Van Halen's soul...the soul that was in his playing, was not of this earth. He was able to channel this random wave of notes and emotion from the ethereal. He was blessed and driven like no other. As we see... it took a toll. Rest in peace Edward Van Halen...I raise this nice cold one to your memory on this Christmas Eve of 2024. Thank you for your great music and inspiration 🍺🎸👏🏼
The first part is called 316. He wrote and played it for his son Wolfgang while still in the womb. Wolfgang is an amazing artist. Played every instrument and produced and mixed his first album by himself.
Same for me. 2 best concerts of my life. Such a pleasure and a privilege. He always did this solo, but you're right, its a combination of small samples of a number of different songs put together. But each time he started it with 316, the instrumental that eventually was titled after his son Wolfgangs birthday. R.I.P. King Edward
Killer Reaction....I was lucky enough to see this live in 1983 in Houston Texas....As we were leaving the stadium the whole crowd bunched together like sheep we all started yelling and screaming for what seemed like an eternity....I will remember that concert till the day I die....I had their first album at the age of 12....Blew my mind !!
Ofcourse there will, that’s what it’s all about, growing up listening to bands you like and develop a style all your own and with technology ever changing somebody will break out some new licks!
The smile I think is because he found what truly made him happy , which is playing guitar . Like they say if you can make a living doing something which you would do for free you have found gold in your soul .. That’s why he was always happy and smiling I think he was truly happy playing his guitar 🎸
Simply the greatest live guitar solo I've ever seen - and this was recorded over 36 years ago. Now David Gilmore's got some live stuff that will also make the hairs on your arms rise too but the different reasons. The variety of techniques displayed in this video are amazing and as far as I can see Eddie didn't miss on a single (tapped) harmonic. As many of you here know, if you miss on the harmonic by the slimmest of margins and you get a clunk. Just amazing, what a talent.
😂here to listen to your reaction wow the solo from live with out net 1986 jone what an honor in the intro still loving Van Halen .use to play a little bit more than eruption 😂 the good old days my brother ❤RIP Eddy Van Halen
If you want emotional, check out the 2nd solo in the White Lion song "Warsong". Actually, the acoustic part between the two solos is great too. But kind of drowned out by the synth and vocals. Vito Bratta was another phenomenal player.
There are a few guys in the same ballpark. Steve Vai, John McLaughlin, Jimi Hendrix who I’ve seen live. He paved the way for guys like Eddie Van Halen. Who is the best guitarist is all subjective the era, style soul, innovative etc. Chuck Berry led to Clapton and Hendrix who led to Stevie Ray Vaughn who led to Eddie and others.I think the argument can be made for Eddie Van Halen. He was super creative and innovative and just really awesome.
@@richardtsandee8603 totally. Love Joe Satriani. I love when he and Steve Vai collaborate. There are others we could mention also like Al Di Meola or John McLaughlin for example. I just used Steve Vai generically to represent a genre. Otherwise I would have to write a book lol.And I don’t think anyone would want to read my book lol
Ted Nugent knew Eddie..he said he was the best guitarist he had ever seen or played with..he had such great rhythm Uncle Ted said..and Ted was friends with Hendrix too
Yes you’re right. They asked Ted about the greatest player he’s ever heard and it was Ed. Also, some other notable players that say he was the greatest (who know a thing or two about playing) Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Lukather, Neil Schoen, Nugent of course.. Brian May said he was the most astonishing player he’s ever been around, even Beck said he could learn a few things or two from Ed… it’s without a doubt Edward was the greatest player to ever strong then up when you factor everything that goes into it.
I was 13 when I saw this tour. It changed my life forever. The 5150 record with Sammy remains my favorite record ever. The first thing I ever recorded on a VCR was when this moment happened live. I'm now 30+ years into video production and a musician. So, you could say this was the moment that brought me into the rest of my life. ruclips.net/video/cvl5wEDkjXM/видео.html
While Eddie is the top for me, there are so many great guitarists - David Gilmore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Ry Cooder, Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Jimi, BB King, Hank Marvin, John Bonamassa, Yngwie Malmsteen, Santana, Randy Rhodes, Roy Clark, Angus, Blackmore, Iommi, Page, Vai, and sooo many more, a local unknown Justin Johnson, an up-and-coming Toby Lee and Matteo Mancuso, Many unknowns - and many who have been forgotten - like Django Reinhardt
Sometimes, one enjoys the music. Sometimes, it is that one person who captures your heart and keeps it forever. It is too much for me to know I will never again watch Eddie play live.
I’m sure they learn the basics of music from their father, but Eddie I believe never had a formal guitar lesson was all self taught. Eddie built his own guitars.
The opening is so Beautiful and way too short. More turns and directions before going hard could have really rounded the piece off. But he was giving the people what they wanted and we can all respect that. But it started like Mozart so full and big.
This occasionally makes me go listen to the studio version again where I tend to get lost revisiting several favorite VH tunes from the first 5 albums. I'll add some of my favorites VH stories include how Eddie would turn his back and hide his lead techniques from the other guitar players in the busy LA clubs to protect his 'secrets' as VH rose to the pinnacle of that local industry before they were signed.
Then you my friend have a great ear. i think I found one miss, 3/4 of the way in. A missed note that he skipped near the 15th fret. I would love to discuss if you could briefly fill me in.
I commented above and forgot to mention Terry Kath. He was freaking awesome also. I saw Chicago live. The band was amazing and he was so sick! 25 or 6 to 4. Is such an innovative sound. Rock sound with horns. It changed the direction of music for a while but stands the test of time. Think about the band’s that followed. Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Ides of March, Blood Sweat and Tears. Kath was really the leader of Chicago sang lead vocals on several songs, harmonies and was a songwriter as well.
Yeah, It seems impressive, Until you see a 14 year old French girl play it note for note while sitting and in a completely relaxed state. See "Tina S. Just Say'n

No it’s not,The majority of what he’s playing are solo’s from VH songs
He changed the world with
Eruption/You really got me
and Spanish fly.
@@basher5107 Cool

Amen brother, very well said. I'll drink to that too!🍺🍻

316 ❤ Joe Satriani gave a blind reaction to this in Guitar World magazine. He said it was played by a master, not knowing it was EVH.
I was fortunate to have seen VH twice in concert. Music that shaped my teenage years.

@@basher5107 but there will never be another guitarist, that will change the music industry, like van Halen did ... We can agree on that
That smile was like he knew the secret to everything but wasnt quite ready to share it with us mere mortals...
Damn that is well put and right on.

I saw this concert 3 nights in a row on this tour, feel blessed to have been able to see it live…3 times also.
I was at the concert in Toronto 1984, I was really hi, but it was incredible, concerts are not the same now
Was at this concert. 10th row floor center stage. New Haven coliseum. Connecticut. This show was insane. Long live “King” Eddie!!!🔥🔥🎸🤘
I saw this tour two weeks before this show. It was so incredible live I was actually emotional seeing him for the first time.
I was at the show the night before they filmed this.
@ what a time to be alive!

The sheer joy he got from playing a guitar radiates off him, even through the video screen, the guitar was a part of him, good reaction rock on 🤘🤘

i was not here but i saw van halen live in 1982 and 1984 was some of the best memories
The king
EVH did a similar solo on an acoustic guitar; it's on the album Van Halen II and the song is called "Spanish Fly." You might be surprised.
Legend........RIP man❤❤🎸🎸🤘
never cease to amaze, the amount of techniques used is insane all in one take, smoking a cigarette. live masterpiece
RIP King Edward

TY Eddie!
Eddie Van Halen was the BEST guitarist of all time. He revolutionized how guitars are made. Nobody can replace him.
Eddie was a great entertainer too, and his solos were from another planet!

keeping a solo that interesting for that long without drums and a rhythm section is next level

Now do Neil Peart drum Solo in Frankfurt.
Stevie Ray Vaughan Look at Little Sister back and forth with Reese Amazing. Live.
This is when Eddie was his happiest. On stage live.
I read somewhere that according to Eddie, he was so drunk during this solo, that he hardly remembers doing it. That is amazing if that is true.
Eddie played guitar like most people eat French fries...effortlessly and loving every bite.
I was fortunate to see VH 5 times, all with DLR, I would've liked to see Sammy with them but Eddie was amazing 😅😊
Ed would have loved this reaction.
Sometimes, one enjoys the music. Sometimes, it is that one person who captures your heart and keeps it forever. It is too much for me to know I will never again watch Eddie play live.
The King …Eddie Van Halen !! Period ….
Steve vai is really good
Jimi Hendrix improvisation from Woodstock
I’m sure they learn the basics of music from their father, but Eddie I believe never had a formal guitar lesson was all self taught. Eddie built his own guitars.
And he was most likely drunk😂😂😂

Ted Nugent either Stranglehold or Hybernation, both from Double Live Gonzo. Ted could really tear it up!
My goodness another fan of the song Hibernation. Completely agree. Cheers from canada
Thanks!
As a classical guitarist, I'm sure Eddie comes off as super unclean, but fun.
