Imagine being 15 years old, in High School, and this album drops. Everyone I knew had this album. The 70's did not disappoint! Every song is a banger!!
I was 15 at the time, too. I was completely besotted…..and I had to keep rescuing the album from my parents stereo…they loved it and kept borrowing it. 😂
The Boston sound completely blindsided us poor high schooler’s and knocked us out of our shoes! Never before had we heard anything like it! It was so overwhelming to the ears! Talk about hitting the sweet spot! They were the hundred year flood that changed the landscape of Rock and Roll ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I got to meet Tom Scholz once at an animal rights conference and I was so star struck all I could say is, "When Boston comes on the radio I turn the volume all the way up."
Agreed. Same could be said for Alvino Rey Not only did he helped Gibson with the Electric pickups, he also created the first talk box 1939. And very few remember him much less his contribution to music technology.
@csphoenix9 said, "Tom is a engineer and inventor if some of the technology we use today" What specific technology are you talking about? The Rockman died out big time in the late 90's and early 2000's. and it is rarely used today by big name artists. Guitar processors such as the Fractal Axe FX and the Kemper profiler along with the Digitech Whammy Pedal render the Rockman obsole. In addition, all of Toms Rockman gear is analog. The world of professional recording is largely digital now as well.
You nailed it, Steven. Windows down, stereo blasting out some Boston while cruisin'. It's a great time!! I think I'm nearing a thousand listens to this album and I still find new things that I never heard before. Tom was an MIT grad and a bit of a mad scientist, imo. Smoking is a nice hard rocker from this album. Can't wait til you get to it. Also, ROCK & ROLL BAND! BANGER!
Such memories I have of this album. The picture is the one on the belt buckle that Boston gave my Mom that night she and her boyfriend opened the pizza place back up and made them pizza after their concert. Mom and her guy had been to the concert and you can imagine how excited they were when Boston pulled up in the parking lot! They were not opened, but they unlocked the doors, invited them in and started making pizzas! Mom passed away 35 years ago tomorrow, so you have bought a tear to my eye tonight. Thanks for your reaction.
@csphoenix9 This is false. Not one track from the six song demo that was sent to Epic and given to Boylan was used on this record. The fact that this record as 9 or 10 songs depending upon how you count them does not mesh with your claim either. Given the fact that all of Brads vocals were recorded in LA studios your claim is even more far fetched. Also Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and this has been properly documented in the liner notes of every copy of this record that has ever been sold. Tom could not play the drum parts on this record even in his wildest dreams. Tom does not know how to groove and he can not hold down a groove on drums and his rudiments suck at best,
Tom Scholz is a MIT trained engineer and built his own recording recording studio in his basement. He also builds one-of-a-kind black boxes to create specific sounds for instruments. Pretty amazing guy. He and Delp recorded that album and when it was released it went ballistic and then they had to put together a band to tour.
The drums tracks were recorded in a proper studio in L.A., played by Sib Hashian. The only drums recorded in the basement studio on this album is on the song "Rock and Roll Band"; it was retained from the demo tape & performed by Jim Masdea. I highly suggest "Hitch a Ride" (a masterpiece of guitar arrangement) and "Smokin'" next.
What specific studio in LA did Tom allegedly record the drums for this record? The liner notes mention Capital Studios which is where Brads vocals sans one song were recorded. The liner notes mention The Record Plant LA which is where the entire song Let Me Take You Home was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record. The liner notes indicate that the record was mixed at Westlake Studios in LA. All of this is confirmed independently by producer John Boylan as well. However, there is no mention by Boylan or by Scholz that Sibs drums were recorded any place other than Foxglove studios (Tom's home studio at the time this record was made)
Don’t forget Rock & Roll Band! Also, be sure to check out the cover of this song by Kids Rock for Kids! You won’t be disappointed, and it’ll even give you hope for the future!🥹
Love your reactions! Tom Scholz was a graduate of MIT in Engineering. He was pretty much a genius. I heard he also actually developed and built recording equipment to do things that the current available equipment couldn’t do. 😮
Have listened to this album most of my life, and I'm still hearing things that I missed with every listen. Just an amazing record all the songs are good. Never get tired of hearing this one.
This song reminds me of summer, hanging out with my friends at the beach. A potluck picnic, the smell of suntan lotion, a cooler full.of beer and a boom box and bunch of cassettes. Oh, to be young again!
This is probably my favorite song on this Album. It is hard to Choose I love the entire album. First Hear it in Early 1977 when My older Brother brought this in to the House. We Played this LP until it was completely worn to out. Thanks for Sharing.
It does have a similar look to the spaceship on Electric Light Orchestra's cover. The colors are that same as well. I wonder if the same artist was used.
With the Boston skyline under the dome on top. It's reminiscent of a series of old science fiction stories about whole cities uprooting themselves from Earth using anti-gravity tech, and soaring off into space to seek their fortunes (James Blish's "Cities in Flight" series).
Yep! I listen to a playlist with Do It Again on it, from the Can't buy A Thrill album. When that song comes on, its six minutes and four seconds of pure greatness. I'll be dancing on that treadmill!
Please do HITCH A RIDE by Boston next..Seen Boston back in 1977 at college SIU ,the singer hit all the high notes and they played so loud my ears rang for days !
Takes me back to 8th grade in 1976/1977 and most every album I bought had great tracks on the entire album. Had to buy this after hearing More Than A Feeling, played side one when I got it home and then had to play it again before listening to side two.
Love Boston. Every song is fantastic on this album. I wear my Boston t shirt, which is this albums cover and I am always stopped and told best debut album, I agree. Love Boston and my t shirt. LOL. Great reaction as usual. ❤✌
There are certain songs that have the ability to transport to a different time and place and this song has it every time I listen to this song it takes me back to 18 years old and cruising Main Street on a warm summer night window blasting it full blast out of my 1970 challenger thanks for the memories
Love your reactions,Steve--keep going, bro! JUst start on the first track on 'Side B'..Rock n' Roll Band and follow along. THis is the highest selling debut rock album for a reason. Their second one -Don't Look Back,is worth checking into as well. Rock it! T

Such a great time to b in highschool when All these great albums came out. U got 5 more great songs to go still this album was in the cassette deck far lelt top 5 slots. But the thing about this album was that the quality (sound) was the Best of all the other cassettes in my box. Just pure, clean, all music!!!!
Boston's debut album is one of the rarest of the rare: an album which contains no clunkers. Every song on Boston's debut still gets played often on classic rock FM radio stations. BTW, there is another band from Boston who also released a legendary debut album called "The Cars". Boston's debut released in 1976, The Cars debut album released in 1978. It was good to be growing up on the North Shore of Boston back in those days when Boston and The Cars became legendary superstars.
Stephen so glad you are diving into Boston! I’ve said on here many times it the best composed music of all time. You’ve done the first side of the debut album! Check out ‘Rock and Roll Band’ and ‘Smokin’ on a clear side. On second album ‘Man I’ll Never Be’ is just phenomenal. FYI… on the albums the harmonies are Brad Delp. They recorded them separate and Tom Schulz added them in his garage studio. Just insane 🔥🔥🔥🔥
There’s a guy who does reaction videos that did every Boston song on the first two albums and came away saying it went from a band he’d never heard to the best band he’s ever heard tied with the Beatles ‼️ Now we expect that kind of deep dive from you Stephen 😂 LET’S GO!
Steven, this is one of my favorite albums of all times. Along with the Black album by Metallica. Every song on both are bangers as you call them. Foreigner Double Vision, every song..... That's the way albums used to be. ENJOY BRUH!!!!! ✌️✌️ & ❤❤
From what I’ve read, the drums were indeed recorded in his basement, but the record label wanted them redone in a “proper” studio, which is what we hear now. Tom was a smart guy… he built his own guitar effects, recording equipment, and eventually went on to found Rockman Amplifiers.

Without question! Can’t think of another one that’s close. The Cars debut album was 🔥too, but this one was tops

@ Good call! That album has so many amazing songs as well. Definitely one of the best ever.
Boston to me. Nothing tops it. Van Halen was great too.
There is not a bad song on this album!! One of if not the best debut albums ever! Great reaction Steven! Please just do every song
Imagine being 15 years old, in High School, and this album drops. Everyone I knew had this album. The 70's did not disappoint! Every song is a banger!!
I was sixteen, it came out the summer (June) between junior and senior years.
That's was what I told him to. I was 16
There was so much dropping back then!!
I'm glad I get to appreciate it again. ❤️✌️
I'm with you first album I ever bought I was a sophomore in high school!
I was 15 at the time, too. I was completely besotted…..and I had to keep rescuing the album from my parents stereo…they loved it and kept borrowing it. 😂
Love Brad Delp’s voice!! This whole album is epic!!🤘🔥
May he RIP.
Every song on this album is a banger.
Bostons guitars are instantly recognizable
"Hitch a Ride" needs to be next.
When this album came out when I was in high school it was all anyone could talk about. It was HUGE.
Tom is even more of a genius when you consider when this was recorded, and that he built a lot of his own equipment.
The first rock album I was allowed to purchase at age 13. Drop the needle until it is time to flip the album. Great album!

Smokin is my favorite on this album.
ABSOLUTELY PROUD to be a teen in the 70's!! The BEST music era EVER!!❤❤🎉🎉
Best debut album ever 💯💯💯
This entire album blew us all away then, and does so now, as well! ❤ I have to agree, this is a masterpiece, along with the whole album.
This debut album is actually volume #1 of Boston's greatest hits, IMO. Well done as usual sir!
Tom was a MIT trained engineer. Also founded the Rockman sound that was the sound of the 80's
Check out, “Smokin’” and “Rock & Roll Band” next on the same album.
RNR Band is my favorite Boston song.
Brad Delp was an awesome singer! RIP Brad. Brad did write 2 or 3 of Boston’s songs. Keep in mind, Brad did lead vocals and backup vocals on albums. ❤
Glad you got decent speakers Boston deserves it
It’s true… EVERY song on this album is incredible!!!! You will be loving it all, looking forward to more from this album! 😀
This dude's a genius. Yep. That pretty much says it all.

A total 10/10 album
Michael sweet from stryper sang with Boston for a while after brad delp passed away.
On Stryper's cover of this song, Michael Sweet absolutely nails the vocals
their first 2 albums are off the charts there are no skips on either up and down bangers from start to finish
Remember this was recorded in 1975 and album came out in 76 .. Watch their live performance from Giants Stadium 1979
every song on this album is still in rotation on classic rock stations.
Brad is THE voice of Boston. Before the days of autotune. He sang ALL the backups

Hands down my favorite Boston tune.
Smokin' is def my favorite track on this album. Guitar AND organ solos are off the chain.
Brad Delp and Tom Scholz were Bostin! All of the vocal layering was Brad's voice.

One of the most amazing things about their first two albums is that Brad Delp did all of the vocals!
Tom was an MIT engineer. Brad Delp suffered from depression and ended his own life
So tragic! 😞
I believe Brads suicide note said “ I gave all that I could to everybody I could for as long as I could”

After that last power harmony, it goes into the guitar only part, which is the distorted version of the acoustic intro.
