We now have a lab and I have followed your videos for training and I couldn’t be more thrilled. She has turned out to be such a great dog. I’ve never had a dog that would heal when I went for a walk and now I do! Thank you so much for your videos.
This is the one thing, after 3 years with my GSP, I haven't been able to break with her. Her and I do 2km - 6km walks twice a day. She'll heel off leash find, but on the leash she couldn't care less and I have to Yank her back. I've tried with a halty, easy-lead type set up, and I've gone back to a martingale. That being said, she usually gets it through her head about 10 minutes into our walk that it would be more comfortable for her to just walk beside me, at least with a loose leash.

I have a 2 year old gsp and I want him to do better during walks. I have tried using collar in vibration mode to help correct his walks, has not helped. What should be my best approach?

no special leashes. no fancy e collars. just patience and communication. He wants to walk, so if you are consistent in not progressing when the leash is tight. He should start to get it.
"heel" is a separate command from walking on a loose leash. Basic obedience like sit, stay, come, leave it, all help build a dog that pays better attention to you.
So you train the dog to walk on a loose leash, train the "heel" command as a separate action. If he gets distracted and starts pulling, redirect his behavior back to you by asking him to "heel." Thats why that command is useful in the first place.
Its getting the dog to walk pinned to your left leg, sure. But its MAINLY supposed to get the dog to FOCUS on you. If you use the heeling position as your default all the time, you kinda loose that benefit. It misses the point. If you are just taking the dog on a walk to go potty, he doesnt need to be pinned to your leg and focused on you, nah mean? But having the tool in the arsenal IS useful.
Thats why in movies and stuff when a dog is acting bad they always say "HEEL!" Its that idea of "redirecting" the dogs behavior with another action. "NO!" or "STOP!" isn't as effective at redirecting as something like "Heel!" or "Sit!"
Having a dog that walks on a loose leash is also the way to have a dog that can walk with NO leash. Having a dog that is proven to be able to heel and do all the stuff in all the situations and stay close to you without pulling on the leash all the time and stuff. You can then move to off leash situations. I could hike for days with my dog and she would never get more than 50 ft away from me. If i see another hiker I just say "heel" and everything is all good.

A dog is not a robot. Dogs can be trained really well using positive enforcement, treats, pats and a "Good Boy" work far better than an e-collar. The force free method may take a bit longer to teach
but you will end up with a much closer bond with your dog. The behaviours last longer as the dog internalizes learnt behaviours, he/she feels that she is sitting, heeling etc because she wants to. So you won't have to always rely on a collar. Do you want to be someone your dog loves to be around or someone they obey because its very unpleasant not to.
This sort of trainer isn't able training a Willtoplease Doggy without e and prong collar bullshit. This type of trainer (so called trainer) isn't able going to toilet without pushing a button
My English pointer is doing fairly well,but when I stop he wants to angle his body and head towards my lefty knee when he stops.I would like him to stay parallel to me.I use my knee to push him away but he turns back to me. Any suggestions appreciated have started using your ten yard drill. It works perfectly using the lines works well Thanks Kevin

It is fairly variable, but let me see if we can figure out how to help make this easier!
Why use an e collar? Blah, I've read all the "reasons" but if you really work at understanding your dog and yourself a partnership is delvoped and tugging ecollars are not nessary

Or would it be better to teach them associations using proper communication and bonding, through learning using positive methods (consequences). Species is irrelevant, taking a more harmful approach is wrong, regardless how you look at it.
I am just starting to work with the e collar on my chocolate lab. I was wondering at what point do you use it when doing this healing drill. Would just love more clarity as to when i need to use it. I am new to this channel and i just LOVE it! tha

Are you using correction on the ecollar? Low settling?
We start at the lowest setting when we first work with a dog, but some dogs require a little bit more stim. It really depends on the dog.
I have a very strong male GSP who has no idea what heel means but is confident in the field and responds to the "here" recall using the e-collar. I bought the easy lead . will the steps be the same as the beginning , absent the e stimulus ?

Nick at the lowest setting that gets the dogs attention, that setting is different for every dog.
"Stimulation" lol. Youre shocking a dog who can learn all these behaviors without using fear as a tactic.

Hello, I just bought the leash from you guys that is featured in this video. I was wondering do I start working with my GSP with the leash first to work on heel or can I start with the e-collar? And when exactly are you pressing the button on the ecollar? And I heard you say that the heel training should start at home. About how long should the sessions be. My gsp just turned 1 year and boy is he a puller and wants to sniff everything

I was taught to lead with the left foot for the dog to continue heeling and the right foot for the dog to stay in position is this not the case any more ?

So you are stimulating while you walk and no stimulation when you stop?
No, we are only using the collar when we need him to either get himself back in the right position or to stop. Its just a tap on very low stim. Thanks for watching
I’ve been watching a ton of your videos lately and noticed that you usually start training to heel when the puppy is fairly grown up. What if I live in a town and need to leash the puppy every time they need to go potty? Should I let them pull or should I train them to heel sooner?

Wondering the same thing.
You want them to be bold and confident before training heel. Ideally you'd want to get a season of hunting under them, hence the older puppies. An issue you might come across if you teach heel to soon, is the dog might be too hesitate to range out and hunt on their own and trying to always keep focus on you.

my thought is to use a harness until you are ready to train Heel so the puppies do not practice bad habits of pulling on a collar. (a harness feels different). - - - blitziel - - - is absolutely correct in why you might wait until the puppy is a dog/bitch.
How long should the heeling training last.
Keep your first few short and sweet. If the dog starts to lose focus its time to call it a session.
How do you tell your dog that heeling is finished and they no-longer NEED to pay full/focused attention?
Start command = Heel
(work, correction, and praise/reward in the middle)
End command = ... ?
i use the command “free” which means she can release from the position for example say i arrive at a park and we are walking and she’s in heel next to me when i say “free” she will break from heel and run around for a while you can use other words too like “break” there is good tutorials on how to teach it to ur dog

What is the best way to get into bird hunting with a dog, without breaking the bank. You guys do great work!
Used shotgun, borrow someone'sfor a season. Decide between pointer or flushing dog. 850 or 350 for some labs I think dont quote me i dont have a lab. Then u need a clicker. Get a dogtra pathfinder gps/training collar u can hook up to your phone 380. It's not hard its do you have the time, patience, and consistency to train a dog.
Find someone to train with. It’ll save you lots of money and give you some training tips, plus you can work on backing with another dog

How old Is the puppy
I have an 8 month old Weimaraner female, and it's been a chore trying to train her. My male was very easy to train, and was an amazing field dog for me, but my female is so sensitive to any correction. She's a very confident dog, except when it comes to training her, she just shuts down on me. I use an e collar, and positive corrections, but the second she gets a correction she doesn't like, I have to end the training session because she becomes unresponsive. It's just frustrating because she comes from a great breeding program, has great natural instinct and very high prey drive. I'm just worried I'm going to ruin her.
Sounds like you know when to quit, she may just need a little more praising than some dogs.

Faheem Khan hunting dogs like this with short fur on their tails will whip them so hard when they are excited that they can injure themselves when working through brush or bushes.

My dog is a nine year old rescue wire haired Jack Russell, who has never been lead trained.she wouldn't stand still long enough to even start to do what your doing at the start of training. she barks like a banshee when out. she is a real struggle. her barking stops her hearing any instruction. she doesn't have any focus on anything other than pull and screech. Even before she leaves the house she is tuning up and drags me over the door step. I have tried a slip lead but she almost strangles herself,
Need to work through the naughty behaviors. Every time you give in she wins the battle.
I thought my jack russel how to walk on lead inside the house. I just walked him all over the house every day. Took him with me to the bathroom every time I moved round the house. I’m sure he thought I’d lost my mind but he was cool in the lead in no time

People dock tails for a variety of reasons. One of the best reasons in my opinion, is that working dogs can injure/break their tails in the field when working thick cover and docking the tail prevents this from happening.
