How can ANYONE think these animals are "ugly"?! I've just recently befriended one of the little guys, myself, and while I haven't attempted to feed him by hand, he trundle up to my porch most every night for a meal. I started out with catfood, but after some research, I've started experimenting with some fresh fruits, (grapes are his favorite so far) as well as small amounts of yogurt and cottage cheese since I read that possums can be prone to calcium deficiency. He's still a wild animal, but one I'm pleased to call friend.

I agree, and regrettably the older I get and the more cruelty I see, it's clear to me that it's people, not animals, that are the "ugliest" creatures in nature. God help us.

Opossums are super cute and sweet. People are uneducated and because they look like “giant rats” people automatically assume their rodents… which they most certainly are not!!! But yeah people just need to be educated more. Which is why i expose our opossum as much as possible. He’s a rescue. Handicapped so unreleasable

I put out cat food and to help with the calcium issue I bought FLUKER'S LIQUID CALCIUM 1.7oz from my local pet store and I add the recommended 1/2 tsp per 8oz of water in a bowl for the little guy. I imagine it helps a lot bc the higher ammount of liquid calcium gets right into thier system. Try it.😁👍ps the 1.7 oz bottle lasts me about 3 months and it's around 10.00 on Amazon.

just took a baby one to a rehaber. He walked right into my living room and it took me a day 1/2 to find him and put him in a carrier for safe keeping and to stop him from his uninvited stroll. If it had been a rat, I'd have stayed awake, but I knew their not mean and I gave up , went to sleep and the next day he crawled out from behind the stove and I picked him up using my hands and a towel. Never showed any meanness. I fed and watered him, sneaking can make you hungry, and then off to the rehaber. They are just the most docile animals. Just want to eat and sleep.

Indeed they are. I love how he’s holding onto that BBQ cable. He didn’t even hiss or grimace really when he goes to hand him the food which is very unusual. I have my fifth possum now and he still grimaces sometimes when I go in towards his face with my hand. Never ever bites and he absolutely loves his papa (me) but they’re just so hardwired to grimace (show their teeth with an open mouth) they just can’t help it sometimes. I love these creatures. Can’t live without em now.

Oh poor thing is scared. It’s trembling. Opossums are the most beneficial creatures. They do a world of good. We are lucky to have them around. They eat pests like ticks, cockroaches, insects, mice, rats. They are also our only marsupial in the US and they help keep rodents away from your home and your neighborhood will be a lot better with them hanging around. You will be pest free if you have opossums living on your property. I welcome them. As homeowners you want them around! They do plenty of work like the cleaning up pests in yard. They’re simply amazing creatures and do a job for you by keeping your home rodent free!

They ate all our dry foods in the kitchen and never left lol.

Hiss and spit. But after a week they caught on that I was the food guy. That turned into baths and sleeping on my pillow at night. They used to be up all night but adapted to night time sleep and day time adventures which still end up with a messy house. But what animal doesn't mess up a house?

We weren’t expecting to see her again but she kept coming back. We would put her back outside after feeding her and she starting giving hints she didn’t want to leave. Winter came and we decided to give her a permanent home. She had her own room and loved to be held and cuddled and would even eat out of our hand. She never showed any signs of being scared or unhappy. We found out she was blind although we suspected as much when we found her so we were glad we were able to give her the special care she needed. She died almost 6 months after we got her and my girlfriend made a pendant out of her hair and ashes that she wear wherever she goes.

Good luck with your squatter. It's nice week when you get a resident. Messier of course.
    What are you feeding them?
I understand they need calcium and get a lot from eating whole small animals and remains. I decided a little while ago to offer our locals rotisery chickens, breaking it up between all meat and half meat and bones. They take everything and crunch it down happily. If they like it and it helps keep them healthy and prosperous i cant help it. They seem to like most fruit too. The sugars and water cant hurt i suppose.

I live in the northwest mountains of NC and possums are plentiful. This little guy likes to crawl into my grill to find leftover drippings. I have a large black dog inside and he alerts me anytime the possum arrives, which is often. I think possums are some of the most misunderstood of animals. Not only are they incredibly cute, they are not aggressive.

@@TheRedGremlin they can eat a LOT of ticks, can't jump and as you said, they aren't mean. It's the racoons getting in peoples trash, not these guys, mostly.

@@JustaKarenDiscoveredTheIntrnet I've saved more than a few. I appreciate them. I wish they lived longer, a lot of the death is from predators, so maybe they would if they didn't get attacked.

It's AMAZING that the food drive of wild animals is so intense, that even when a 6 foot tall 200 pound apex predatorial ape bursts into their hiding spot, within 30 seconds they can be coaxed into ignoring the threat and enjoying some pepperoni lol.
