    I have a three-and-a-half-year-old female Virginia opossum named Sid who lives in my house with three cats. She eats cat food and uses the litter box just like a cat. I have tried to get her to leave, but as soon as I put her down in the grass, she runs back into the house through the cat door. She loves to snuggle on the sofa at night when I watch tv. I carry her around the house over my shoulder like a baby. She bathes herself every day in the bird bath. She is super clean and very polite.

    last summer we had a opossum that would com in through our cat door, climb up on my desk. We had an arrangement if I wanted to pet him I had to feed him. If he wanted to be fed he had to let me pet him.

      have a barn cat that way, he doesn't like to get petted or touched, except if you feed him then its like Ok, you can pet me while you feed me. So he's the same way, won't let you pet him unless its feeding time, and if if he wants to be fed he had to let me pet him and not get fussy and slashy.

    Over the course of my life, I have raised many orphaned opossums to maturity.
    I usually find baby opossums clinging to their mothers after being run over in the street.
    Opossums make rewarding pets and they do not bite.
    Opossums are high maintenance and you have to make a commitment to keep up with feed them a healthy diet and cleaning their cages of their poop/pee - gets real stinky if you don't.
    If you keep the opossums and their cages clean, they are not smelly at all.
    They are actually quite attractive when they are clean and brushed out.
    My babies were so tame, they would let me wash them in the sink and blow dry/brush them off.
    Like any successfully raised pet, you have to make the commitment.
    The downside to raising opossums is this species is short lived - typically 2-3 years, many even less.
    After all the rewarding and invested effort, it hurts to lose them so young.

I provide them some chicken, hard boiled eggs, berries, grapes, cut up apples, other super ripe fruit like bananas, mango, avocado, etc., chips, seeds and nuts, depending on what I have readily available. If I do not have any available, I give them some cat food. However, too much protein harms their bones. Also bad is diary products, (non greek-yougurt is good) and some baked sweets are not good for them. Thank you for your caring and kindness to these gentle, and non harmful opposums! are there non innocent animals?

    • @whalesong999
      @whalesong999 3 года назад +11

      @@zalifor Sometimes it's fitting to say it right out as a light for those who treat other creatures with disregard, especially opossums because there are some in the world that will kill them just because they're there. In my youth of the late '40s and into the '50s on a Midwestern farm, the attitudes in our 4-H group treated most any wild animal as a pest - even farm animals were treated cruelly, just commodities.

    • @erintubb9860
      @erintubb9860 2 года назад

      @@whalesong999 well, opossums will kill chickens and their urine and feces can kill horses. Most states have laws against transporting wild animals for a reason, so if you have an animal that can cause death or injury to your livestock hanging around, there isn't a whole lot of options.

    • @whalesong999
      @whalesong999 2 года назад +3

      @@erintubb9860 "Death or injury" from opossums toward horses is not a prevailing condition, is marginal, and was an unknown when I was a boy in my farming community. I've seen some reporting of that particular feature in opossum urine and scat traced to them ingesting the remnants of dead birds. It brought on a spate of hysteria in the equine community when the news first came out, hyped by fear. Apparently, a high percentage of horses have the organism, there's probably another source in nature such as bird poop.
      Keepers of livestock will do what they feel what they need to do. One farmer near me in the Ozarks enclosed his entire chicken yard, even from predators from above. He knew that having chickens was like having a smorgasbord for the raccoons. foxes, and opossums.
      My statement about "some in the world" is not aimed at those who feel the need to eliminate a wild animal from endangering their livestock. It's more about the wanton killing for some cruel intent - same would go for many of the water turtles that are killed on the roads on purpose.

    A new possum just entered the area. Maybe a little younger that the one or so here prior. Mrs possum has rotated elsewhere or is in decline. The two young possums suggest to be nursing or courting. The youngest has a perfect tail and has her wits about her. Much better sense of surroundings than the others. She hasnt fallen foul of the local raccoons at all. I may have trouble pandering to her peckish needs. All ive thrown has been detected or smelled but her nerves are to high to consider sniffing them out. She is beautiful though and my local possum seems to think so. If its a he the it went around clicking trying to draw her back from where ever she had scattered to.

I hissed loudly and the cat ran off, the opossum was startled but didn't run off. Cat came back 5 minutes later, I hissed, it ran off again and the opossum resumed eating in a very relaxed manner. It thrilled me that the opossum knew I was hissing only at the cat and not him. Maybe he even knew I was protecting him.

    So cute animal. Unfortunately we don't have such here in Russia most probably because they are too friendly and slow))

      Opossums are native to North America. There isn't any in Europe or Asia.

    I suspect he/she does not like being touched but is willing to put up with it in exchange for getting fed.

    Possums appear on my fence a lot of nights mostly spring and summer. They harass my chihuahuas. My rottie pulls them off of my fence so my chihuahuas can corner them and try to attack which scares me. Thank god I always am able to hear them so I can get all 4 chihuahuas in the house and my rottie before anyone gets hurt.

    I used to hate them because when I was a kid on the ranch they would eat the baby chicks.
    Turns out they are just misunderstood. That are really good for the environment and they are not mean, that's a front, lol. My dog has caught a couple of them. I make her let them go. The one thing I noticed is that they like to chew their food really good. Now if I could teach my dog that.

    Fun fact: Possums have short teeth, rarely have rabies, eat ticks, have fairly poor eyesight, and tend to have a calcium deficiency.

    I have been feeding a little possum for awhile now. He was coming into my outdoor laundry room which was heated. I have put out in addition to cat food, vegetables and fruit. I also give him fresh water every night. But mine hides or runs. How do you get them to where they will trust me. I talked to him softly and sang. But he won't come near me and I really want him to.

    They're very hard of sight. Certainly can't make out a hand in connection to food smell. Everything is food unless its big and moving around. Then its best left for last.

    Don't let them rely on you for food *too* much, but a great way to help is give them high-calcium stuff to keep away boneitis (MBD).
