    We did not grab Shmooky, but rescued him. His brother or sister died. The nest was abandoned (parents killed?). Shmooky had an option to go wherever he wanted, but he chose our home and we LOVED him and he LOVED us back. One of the most beautiful creature I had a contact with, including humans!

      I'll say, more than 95% of their species are immune to rabies and also from contracting lyme disease, they eat ticks and snails, also they have cute little grabby hands, if I could adopt a possum as a pet that couldn't be let back in the wild I would tbh as they're like a dog cat mixed with a ferret and a rat, also they look adorable af when they eat vegetables

    What a beautiful possum. They make such lovely pets.
    I notice Shmooky still has little pink tips on the ears. This is a sign that Shmooky is still an adolescent possum .... their little ears gradually turn solid black when they reach maturity.
    Shmooky does not appear overweight to me either.. The way to tell is to look at the possum's tail. Possums store extra fat in their tails .... if the possum's tail is fat, then the possum is overweight.

    Thank you for your kind words. As far as I know they are wild animals and rarely come to humans. My experience with Shmooky was exactly opposite. He is sweet and polite and kind and never look for trouble with the cat or dog that are in the same household. They all got along. Animals have great instinct and if they do not feel threatened they communicate. That is what happened to you. These are great moments in life. We found him once on a table and therefore had to move chairs away from the table at night so he can not climb. That was when he was younger. Slow motion cats,very clean,very affectionate, seem to be happiest when on your shoulder or on your chest.I'm 64 and look forward to interacting with mine every nite. This is so heartwarming to see you give so much attention & love to him. In Texas I usually see them flattened on the road. It's so sad. Yes, unfortunately that's because alot of people are uneducated about the benefits that opossums provide to us, in a natural wild environment, and in urban settings. Opossums need to be learned about how they really benefit us. They are important. On a side note, in Texas opossums are much darker in color very little white, not as cute as opossums in the Northern part of the country, and could be another reason why people are not as nice to them. But hopefully with more videos like this and education, opossums will get the respect they deserve.

      I know I'm a little late here.. but thank you, kind soul, for rescuing this precious baby. I know also that people can be extremely hostile or offensive about things like this with any animal involved. Everyone's a professional and a critic, but most are solely that, a fake professional critic not worth listening to at all.
      But the fact is, you did a good thing saving and documenting Shmooky. He is IMMORTAL now! And Shmooky loves you, for ever in your heart. Where ever you believe animals go after passing on, Shmooky is loving and watching over you. waiting to see you again, in my beliefs.

      Except in the animal kingdom, these differences can mean life and death. If his ears are smaller and his snout is shorter, it could mean he could have trouble sensing predators. He's perfectly fine the way he is, but the point was it's good that he has a loving home because in the wild he could run into issues if his senses are affected.

    I want a opossum. Sadly it's illegal to own them here in Texas. But you can hunt them, kill them...do whatever you want to do to them to cause harm but you can't help them. I had the honor to take in 2 baby opossums for about 4 days because their mother was cruelly ran overed by a lawn mower on purpose. Two little babies fell off and I got to experience taking care of them until I found a opossum shelter that would take them in. I fell so much in love with the babies!

      Ms chewie,had to reply because you hit a topic very close to me.My wife was called to rescue a little opossum at a shopping center by a friend who worked there. It surely was rabid.I got sent out,wife was working.Grabbed the little critter by the tail and wrapped it up in the t-shirt I was wearing.Just before they beat it to death with brooms and mops.Figured we would feed it and nurture until large enough to release.Hit the internet-1st opossum-life span in the wild "just over a year"WTF. Lifespan in captivity.....with proper diet.... several years.1st day she was with us I fed with gloves, which she never bit,put the gloves down,never used again....try that with a raccoon or feral kitten.Gave her the run of the house,she would poop and pee in the same place each nite,put down newspapers....problem solved.Time to release....she is big enough now....its the right thing to do ?? Why ??So the neighbors dog can rip her apart,so the person down the street can beat her to death when she raids his garbage can or sleeps under his shed, so someone can run her over purposely!"Petunia" has been with us over 3 yrs,a member of our family who makes many trips to Lowes,Home Depot and Bed,Bath and Beyond.Petunia climbs dog steps each nite to snuggle under the blankets and sleep against my wife.3 days ago she had extensive surgery to remove 2 large fatty tumors.In a lot of pain-never an aggressive act- if anything I would say that she appreciates the extra food,care, water and tenderness.With us over 3 years now.....how do you put a price on "roadkill"????

    • @chaubui1
      @chaubui1 9 лет назад +3

      Benny Hill yes, i think all animals we can consider pets nowadays come from wild ancestors that we domesticated over time. And even with the ones that we've come upon and decided to make them pets more recently, after a while living with human and receiving food, care and love," captivity" becomes less and less relevant.

    I can relate to your feelings because mine are the same. There is certain innocence that humans lost or never had it, certain naivete that that animals posses, for me especially my dear opossum Shmooky!

  • @whalesong999
    @whalesong999 10 лет назад +5

    Thank you, Nenad! So much praise here and with good reason! Shmooky looks to be an older fellow, a little frayed on the ear tips (often from frostbite). I had a male that looked similar to him, even with the 'brow' that I wintered over for one season and a wonderful fellow. The shorter nose is just one of the variations I've seen, but when they forage through a lot of brush and weeds, the fur gets worn very close to the skin and makes the nose appear long and skinny.

    Exactly right: "so many shockingly stupid people". The gap between the most intelligent and the most stupid human is bigger than between average human and a dog.
    Care, goodness, kindness, benevolence.

    My son aired out the basement in our Brooklyn house today by leaving the back door open. This evening he came upon a young possum down there when he got back. I have rabbits as pets so he lured the possum into a pet carrier and put him back into our backyard. For all I know there's a whole family out there because we don't use the yard often. Thank God my son is a regular Dr. Doolittle and loves animals. It seemed scared and probably came in because he smelled my rabbits. It had the cutest face and seemed docile but their teeth scare me. I hope he finds his family. And damn...I forgot to take pictures but who knows...They might be here to stay for another photo opportunity
