Whoa, no ordinary opossum there. That boy has signs of being around humans and perhaps loved and cared for by human caregiver(s). He's very relaxed and grooms himself as if comfortable with his surroundings. Sweet video, beautiful opossum, certainly a male.
The one I over wintered always used her litter box. When I released her, she stayed in my garage for over two years. Actually, she died there. My vet said they only live three years and that's about how old she was when she died. They have scary teeth but rarely use them for anything but eating. Big bluffers but pass out instead of fighting usually. I love em.
A wild animal such as an o'possum is NOT to be "kept" as a trophy pet just because of being in a place a human sees it and/or shares a space to exist. That possum was obviously healthy and knew how to survive as part of its natural environment, which is partly a garage in this case but just a source of intriguing smells and obviously CAT FOOD that the cat can be heard munching. To make the possum a captive just because it followed its nose to a food source would be incredibly selfish and undeniably cruel.
Do you know If all possums groom themselves like that? Do they have the same tongue structure as Cats?(Papillae) If they dont groom themselves like that normally, Did yours possibly learn from watching/being raised by you/Cats? Their Name? Is it okay to feed them Cat food? What Do you feed them? How Old are they in this Footage? Are they Adorable? (Trick question: Yes is the answer)
it's not ok to feed them cat food in the wild they have a diet wildly different from cats, they are omnivorous scavengers not carnivorous hunters. possums require a varied diet of mostly plants and insects
their only social behaviour is grooming and yes they all groom like that😊 Also feeding them cat food is perfect for opossums. While they ARE omnivores, they will get their other nutrients from scavenging❤️
A small portion of catfood is perfectly acceptable for a wild 'possum to eat as an easy part of a scavenging lifestyle. That grooming you see is typically an after-meal thing or in-between-wanderings activity. From face to hands then to combing the fur with rear feet methodically, it's a fairly predictable pattern, and a joy to watch in person because it makes one realize that to the possum, all is perfect in the world for a couple of minutes.
OMG, what a big chubby visitor you've got on your hands, but yes.. they are WONDERFUL animals. If he does happen to continue to come around, try to keep him from getting into the cat food. Cat food is designed for cats (obligate carnivores) which is WAY too high in protein content for opossums and can lead to a crippling illness called Metabolic Bone Disease. If you plan to share food, please do your research first. Their dietary needs are complicated.
VeganⓋ Aria some yogurt and cheese has calcium in it. Also bones, they get it from that so we put out any bones at our compost. They drag off the turkey carcass at xmas and thanksgiving too, whole thing is gone the next day
I am going to guess that is a female. Past encounters with these gentle beauties has me observing that the male has longer noses and bigger ears while the female usually have smaller ears and broader faces. Just my 2 cents.
