My wife and I rehabilitate opossums, we have for about 4-5yrs or so. People in the comments saying things like "please don't feed them chocolate, etc" They are fine. I know your heart is in the right place but, I can assure you that that opossum could eat a half pint of brownie chocolate ice cream....and be just fine. I will grant you that fruit etc would be a better choice, but them feeding it a drumstick, is not a problem. They enjoy sweets just like we do. The ones leaving comments with a little "grit" to them about them feeding it a drumstick? Quit acting like you know everything about everything!! Respectfully. 🤗
We omnivores (human beings, opossums, rats...) can eat most anything as long as it's not too often, or if it's not supplemented with other more nutrient foodstuffs, as far as I now... Wild animals also get lots of exercise which makes sugar less harmful than it is to a contemporary human.
I love how he wanted to steal the drumstick away for safety and completely forgot any self-preservation skills as soon as he got a taste of the irresistible vanilla ice cream 😂
true! 😂 I also liked how he looked so suspicious of it at first. Took him a few approaches to try and take it. But then, like you said, once he got a taste!... No more hesitation, even when he couldn't grab it! So cute! Drumsticks also happen to be my favorite ice cream treat so I understand, little buddy. I understand. yum!
I've been feeding quite a few possums on my bedroom patio for several months now and I have reached the conclusion that their favorite food is vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Because of the snow and brutal cold we just had, none of them came to eat for 2-3 days. So I had quite a variety of leftover food saved up for them when they ventured out again: pizza, pot roast with carrots and potatoes, BBQ chicken with mac and cheese, broccoli, bananas... and vanilla cake. Oh, and I also had a full bowl each of dry cat and dog food. The first fella that showed up sniffed everything and went for the cake, ended up in a hissing match with another possum that showed up wanting some cake before finally sharing. Just about the only time I end up with more than one possum eating at the same time is when cake is on the menu. I guess they can smell it and are willing to overcome their shyness and eat together if cake's involved. Even if the first possum eats all the cake, everyone else that shows up will walk around licking the wood where the cake touched, trying to get even the smallest taste. I recently used a bright blue vanilla frosting and it it was cute and hilarious seeing their mouths, noses and front feet covered in electric blue frosting. They left little blue footprints on the porch as they walked. Since they always like to pick their slice up and hold it in their hands while they eat, they inevitably end up with sticky feet. I was hoping I'd find tiny blue footprints in the snow too but they do such a good job of cleaning themselves up after dinner that there were no blue snowprints.
That was a great story! I need to find an excuse to feed them cake now. Obviously a cake with something even better on top if possible, so they climb the cake and make a mess.
Wow! He enjoyed that! Can you imagine a life where you are constantly hunting and scavenge to just survive and you come up on a sweet surprise like a Drumstick? That was fun to watch!

@@DarkMadamX83 ah ok, so from what I understand, the poisonous component in chocolate is theobromine. Basically, it is technically still poisonous to us, it's just that we have an enzyme that makes handling it much easier for us and therefore can consume much more than most animals before it makes us sick.
As a general rule, chocolate and dairy shouldn’t be left out for wild animals. Almost no adult mammals are able to digest dairy without getting diarrhea, and chocolate is acutely toxic to many mammals (but not all). Onions and garlic are also not recommended, but most animals won’t eat those unless they’re ingredients in something else. Those plants evolved that flavor to deter animals from eating them.
