I would do each step as one whole side, but, it depends on if you have different people working with you. If there’s three guys on the job, each can be working on a different step on the same side to get one side done. Then repeat on the other side.

Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge! 🙂 I am about to start sanding down my 31ft sailing boat (white hull). Roughly how many fields like the one in this video do you sand down before replacing the sanding paper with a new one?
Hey bro! It all depends- whenever they clog up is general a good time to replace it because it’s almost not effective at all at that point. When it gets clogged up, you will start to feel it. It will almost sort of glide over the surface, bite into it and sand. Trust me, you’ll feel it. 😎
Quite honestly it’s more of an opinion thing. All I do now is dry sand. You get a deeper cut vs wet sanding. When you wet sand, you sort of hydroplane the sandpaper and you don’t remove all of the oxidation. When you dry sand you get a deeper cut- removing more oxidation.

Super informative video! Do you always follow the White wool with the yellow? Or only on darker colors? I have an all white boat I'll be doing soon (needs a full restore) and wasn't sure if the process is the same or slightly different
Hey man! I’m most scenarios, the yellow wool is followed after the white one. It really gets a lot of the swirls out and makes a glass- like finish. It paves the way for polish with the forced rotation really well.
Great video!! Curious as to why you dry sand with 800 & 1000 vs. wet sand. I'm starting on my 21 ft Triton bass boat. It's been garage kept most of its' life, so it doesn't have a lot of oxidation. I'm thinking I just need to use medium cut and polish. I already have a 6" DA that is variable speed. So, what products do you recommend I should buy for my project?
The Lake country formal blend pad is an amazing Inbetweeners pad from rotary cutting to your force rotation polishing. It really helps break down the swirl mark, so then you can switch to an orange pad and pull the swirls out even better. It’s just an in between step from rotary cuttingto forced rotation.

Is this 5 step process your same process 95% of the time? how standard was this gel coat compared to most oxidized gel coats you see? if you had to rate it on a scale of 1-10 where would it land?
I think it came out pretty close to a 10! These steps are very similar to what we typically do, however, each boat has its own individual process that needs to be done because every brand of gelcoat is different. I also try to teach my crew that they need to experiment and learn what works for one boat, may not work for the other exactly. However, the same techniques always apply .
What size was this boat? And how long does a job like this take you? Especially if you’re doing it by yourself. I’m asking because I have recently started doing yachts and it is a lot of work and I’m not sure how to price appropriately.
I know you're using a DA or Forced Rotation polisher with sanding film disks on the interface pad. But what about sanding disks on an interface pad on a basic Random orbital sander? I'm considering the Milwaukee RO sander. "7,000-12,000 variable speed dial" according to its product description and it is speaking in terms of OPM not RPM. I would guess that its too fast and you'd recommend a DA instead? I noticed you said in the 1st step you bumped the DA from a 3 to a 4 on speed. I'm guessing even at speed 4 its WAY UNDER 7000 OPM? Would it be a fine substitute to use a RO sander instead of a sanding disk on a DA? or is it a bad choice and better to just use the DA? (ChatGPT tells me the RPM of a random orbital sander is usually about half as much as the OPM number. so the 7k-12k OPM would be a 3.5k-6k RPM.) Thank you.
Hey bro! Exactly. You have more control with sanding with a DA, you have more variations on speed control. The interface pad two makes a ginormous difference. It doesn’t leave too many impressions in the gel coat.
@@gregsteadman With wet sanding you can wipe it up with a rag and collect all the sanded gelcoat, while dry sanding sends it into the air and lungs unfortunately.
You don’t get a deep enough cut with wet sanding. The sandpaper will almost hydroplane if you use too much water. Dry sand get way better cut and a way better clear finish at the end. What is the average time to complete a let’s say 30ft boat by yourself wash, sand & buff?
Love all the tips man. Thank you.
By yourself on a 30 is going to take a minute. Probably about 5 - 7 days maybe more depending on how efficient you are
Why do you prefer buffing without a handle on your buffer ?
It’s just my preference 💯
So after sanding/rotary/wht wool I’ll usually go forced DA/ purple wool. Is this something you’ve tried?
Yes, and that combination does work quite well for some gelcoats!
Shouldn't we wait for ~30 min and wipe in step 4? or are we still buffing?
We stopped after the buffing stage just for the educational purpose of this video. After this, you would in fact, apply the sealant, then wait 30 minutes, then remove it.

You get a better cut by dry sanding. When you wet sand, the paper almost sort of “hydroplanes” and you don’t cut as deeply as you want to.

It really helps break down the swirl mark, so then you can switch to an orange pad and pull the swirls out even better. It’s just an in between step from rotary cuttingto forced rotation.
Do you wash after Compounding? Before Sealer
Correct, after I’m done with all my compounding steps and before I seal, I wash the boat down. Then, I do my sealing process.
