In this day and age, nobody is helping anyone You sir are an absolute national treasure 🙏 As we are approaching the off-season (up north) I feel could be great video of prep/detailing vessel for dry storage 🤷♂️ Would you dry/wet sand a boat that is only a few years old with minimal-no oxidation on gel coat? Or just go with multi step polish and wax TIA
I’ve been watching your channel for at least 4 years and this is by far one of your best videos. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge! Always learn something new to add to my own business every time I watch 😎👍🏼
@@DrakesDetailing May I ask, where are you guys located? And how difficult is it to find work with a company such as yours? I love boats and the heat 🤣 Not sure if this is the appropriate place to dive in on such topics, but I’d appreciate any info that could point me in the right direction. Thank in advance
Quite honestly it’s more of an opinion thing. All I do now is dry sand. You get a deeper cut vs wet sanding. When you wet sand, you sort of hydroplane the sandpaper and you don’t remove all of the oxidation. When you dry sand you get a deeper cut- removing more oxidation.
why dry sand vs wet sand? Benefits / differences vs wet? Is it faster? More difficult or easy to screw up? Interested as I am going to start on my boat for the first time but never considered dry sand? Thanks. Love your video!
Super informative video! Do you always follow the White wool with the yellow? Or only on darker colors? I have an all white boat I'll be doing soon (needs a full restore) and wasn't sure if the process is the same or slightly different
Hey man! I’m most scenarios, the yellow wool is followed after the white one. It really gets a lot of the swirls out and makes a glass- like finish. It paves the way for polish with the forced rotation really well.
Would you recommend doing all the steps in a section and then moving on? Or could I Do step one, one day then step 2 the next day, and so on? Great videos!!!
I would do each step as one whole side, but, it depends on if you have different people working with you. If there’s three guys on the job, each can be working on a different step on the same side to get one side done. Then repeat on the other side.
What size was this boat? And how long does a job like this take you? Especially if you’re doing it by yourself. I’m asking because I have recently started doing yachts and it is a lot of work and I’m not sure how to price appropriately.
Great video!! Curious as to why you dry sand with 800 & 1000 vs. wet sand. I'm starting on my 21 ft Triton bass boat. It's been garage kept most of its' life, so it doesn't have a lot of oxidation. I'm thinking I just need to use medium cut and polish. I already have a 6" DA that is variable speed. So, what products do you recommend I should buy for my project?
The Lake country formal blend pad is an amazing Inbetweeners pad from rotary cutting to your force rotation polishing. It really helps break down the swirl mark, so then you can switch to an orange pad and pull the swirls out even better. It’s just an in between step from rotary cuttingto forced rotation.
Hey drake thanks for all the info and videos and being a man of the lord that’s so awesome you are my hero! Hey bro, top side definitely can be tough. Unfortunately, it just takes practice until you have your own system down to where you can move the most officially. Top sides take a minute to be proficient at.
@@gregsteadman With wet sanding you can wipe it up with a rag and collect all the sanded gelcoat, while dry sanding sends it into the air and lungs unfortunately.
You don’t get a deep enough cut with wet sanding. The sandpaper will almost hydroplane if you use too much water. Dry sand get way better cut and a way better clear finish at the end. But, it takes a lot of skill and experience to buff out dry sanding scratches versus wet sanding scratches after the fact.

So after sanding/rotary/wht wool I’ll usually go forced DA/ purple wool. Is this something you’ve tried?
Yes, and that combination does work quite well for some gelcoats!
What size was this boat? And how long does a job like this take you? Especially if you’re doing it by yourself. I’m asking because I have recently started doing yachts and it is a lot of work and I’m not sure how to price appropriately.

You get a better cut by dry sanding. When you wet sand, the paper almost sort of “hydroplanes” and you don’t cut as deeply as you want to.
why do some polish with orange lake country foam and then some polish with wool foam pad? any difference in finish?

Do you wash after Compounding? Before Sealer
Correct, after I’m done with all my compounding steps and before I seal, I wash the boat down. Then, I do my sealing process.
What is the average time to complete a let’s say 30ft boat by yourself wash, sand & buff?
Love all the tips man. Thank you.
By yourself on a 30 is going to take a minute. Probably about 5 - 7 days maybe more depending on how efficient you are

Yes, on an 18ft boat most definitely.
are you wet sanding this? ive always heard you need to wet sand not dry sand
I prefer to dry sand, you get a way better cut out of it
I am surprised it was not wet sanding. Can you elaborate why it was dry sanding? Severe situation dictated?
Less mess is why he does it for 1 reason and some other I am sure. Wet sanding leaves a big mess and dry sanding is just dust u can blow or wipe off.
