It depends on how oxidized the boat is and the pressure you are putting on the pad. It can last you the whole boat, or it will fail within 10-20ft of detailing. Lord of variables to factor in there.

Great video BOSS I detail cars and now some person asked to paint correct white speed boat and wax it I only have 15mm DA and some foam pads. I know white color is forgiving so i am thinking of one step correcting with da and medium cutting pad, or just heavy cutting pad + heavy cutting compound + da to corrct that white paint which should leave invisible hologramms which white color should hide + some visible haze which wax should high. Thats all in theory , i know nothing about boats polishing. 8 metres white boat , sides only / externally. If it is possible to do it with da , how many hours will it take with 6.5 pads just so i know how much to.charge money wise please ? Got to answer by the end of today
Thanks bro! It’s impossible for me to begin to guess how long it’s gonna take to do that job. without knowing oxidation level, how big the boat is With a DA probably pretty long if it’s oxidized, because then you will need a rotary. If it’s not too bad and only needs a polish then a DA would probably be okay. Is the r boat gelcoat or painted?
You're in Pensacola, Really I'm shocked. Don't want to detailing for a living. Close to retiring from my second career. Just want to take care of my boat, vehicles and RV. First my boat 2016 Yamaha SX240. Great videos.
If you are using a rotary to finish, you can definitely use a rotary to buy the wax afterwards. If I just dedicate those pads to wax, then I don’t even bother, washing them out, since wax/sealant will be going back in there next time anyways.
Rupes makes a blue pad called coarse rotary cutting pad. Would you use this pad on your flex 3401vrg to cut and or polish boat gel coat? Does not say anywhere on the packaging that it can be used on a forced rotation polisher like the flex but i assume it is ok. Thought id see if you know of this pad or have used it and could recommend it for use with the flex?
Hey Daniel! Just be careful on New gelcoat, if it’s not yet oxidized, then you can just polish it with Starke Elevate medium cut compound, then apply Starke Hyperhold polymer sealant to protect against the UV rays. Then repeat every 4 months or so. here’s a link to where you can buy the products…. 👍 🎯On point ! LC Force Pads can no doubt work on the DA as well. If you have a 15mm or 21mm long throw you can also utilize the HDO pads as they have an additional layer of support on the backing face that enables the pads to last a bit longer .
Great video. What do you recommend to buff out white PVC marks on a dark blue, gel coat hull? The PVC pipes were being used as guide posts for loading/unloading and left white lines on the side of the hull

My trophy 21 ft was badly oxidized. I bought presto products and after cutting with their black/white cutting pad. The pads is throwing like hair crime hair wool from the pad. How long should a cutting pad last? I followed all your recommendations and hull looks amazing. Boat didn’t look this good new! Dave Thanks for the tips Washington state.
Drake - all of your videos are very very very informative and helpful. What's your opinion on Jescar Power Lock Plus vs. Jescar Ultralock Plus. The Ultralock Plus states it has all of the properties of Powerlock Plus AND it also has SiO2. Have you used the Ultralock at all? Would you recommend using the Power Lock Plus or the Ultralock Plus on the entire hull from rub rail down to include the full bottom AND also inside on non skid floor? Lastly I haven't seen you apply any sealant or SiO2 to the bottom of boats below the water line. Should we not be concerned with sealing and protecting the bottom?
First off, I have personally switched to using starke hyperhold instead of Jescar! I find hyperhold works better for boats in salt water! Second, don’t worry about waxing underneath. It will only last a few weeksn
Hi. Thanks for your videos. You really give detail. If you do not mind to ask you, I Need to know which RPM IS Best for these pads. I got a dark blue boat that has oxidiszed
Awesome videos, any chance on a rainy day can you do a full breakdown of what product to use with each pad and step by step from start to finish from heavy cutting to final steps of sealer and wax. Thanks.
Hi Drake. You videos are VERY informative. I've only recently discovered you. Do you, or will you have anything on restoring Awlgrip paint. Mine is tired, and I want to stall repainting for a few more years. I understand Awlgrip is unique... it separates as it cures into a base (the color or pigment) and a clear coat that migrates to the top. Any aggressive cutting or polishing can destroy the clear gloss coat. Any advice or tips. There are thousands of us out here with this issue, and I'm hoping you have thoughts to save the day!
I’m curious what are the science behind how pads are made specific to one particular type of machine vs another. If you can explain please let me know.
Hey Drake. I only have the Makita rotary. Is there not a pad that can be used to polish and buff after using the heavy cut wool pad? Looking to not buy another tool to do the second and third step. Thank you! Great content

Hi Drake, I have a robalo 4 yrs old, one side paint is oxidizing, getting chalky n dull due to sun. Can I compound adequately with 3m heavy cut "perfect it gelcoat" a griot g9 and a wool pad, or do I need a rotary to do this or? I like your videos, u break it down so non pro like me can get useful info. Thanks
Hey bro! You need a rotary if you have that much oxidation. Then you can polish and apply sealant to the boat after you are done using the rotary to remove the swirls
I’m new to polishing, So did I get it right? First heavy cut if it’s a lot of oxidation, then medium cut or polish with a light cut. Then wax. Correct?
Great video it takes a lot of guess work out of choosing the right tools. I do have a quick question if I can? I own a 70’ yacht with a lot of surface area to work, it’s all painted white so no gel coat and very light oxidation. What could you recommend using to clean up and shine up with as few steps as possible but still get a lasting effect?
Hey bro! Try polishing it and then waxing it. Try some shine supply products. If you don’t get a sine or the wax dose not hold up then that’s how you know you need to cut deeper shinesupply.com/
I currently have a new black boat with very little oxidation marks. Should I use the orange pad with the 400, then follow it with the Micro fiber pad? What Polish do you recommend with the microfiber pad? Love the videos.
If your boat just has light, scratch marks, and light oxidation, use the 400 with the orange pad, then you can use the microfiber pad to apply your sealant. Do a small section and see how it looks. You may have to do deeper cutting if the 400 isn’t strong enough to pull the scratching oxidation out of the black gelcoat.
So Drake I’m going to attempt to seal my boat this weekend with jeskar power lock. My 23’ cc boat is about 4 months old and I’m just wanting to keep up on the Maintenace myself. Man do you think the power lock will suffice w/ microfiber pad or do I need to polish with a compound before I seal it. All I have is griot da. Thank you for the wealth of info you share !!
@@DrakesDetailing I would say not much if any. I do have some scuff marks from docking I figured I’d try to get that off with acetone and white terry cloth. I do use my boat a couple times a week so it’s working and not sitting.

Great info, I have been working on a 40 year old Boston Whaler all summer. Question --Do the buff and shine wool pad and lake country orange pad work on a DeWalt DPW849X .. ? The disc it came with has a Velcro fastener (are all of these pads hook & loop? description is not clear)
Pretty awesome! I didn't even know where to begin?
Great video BOSS
I detail cars and now some person asked to paint correct white speed boat and wax it
I only have 15mm DA and some foam pads.
Thanks
Couple questions: how do you clean wax out of foam pads? Is there anything wrong with using a foam pad with a rotary for waxing?
If you are using a rotary to finish, you can definitely use a rotary to buy the wax afterwards. If I just dedicate those pads to wax, then I don’t even bother, washing them out, since wax/sealant will be going back in there next time anyways.
great advice capt...
Thanks!
Great video do use Ardex ocean polymer ever? If so thoughts as a sealant final coat
Yes it’s a great product!
Make a video on rv detailing pads? Are they the same pads?
Yes we use all the same kinds of pads for RV’s as we do on boats.
Hi drake could u tell me the steps i need to do on a new applied gelcoat many thanks
And also which products to use
Hope this helps! 😎

Great video - thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Getting ready to buff and wax my boat for the first time! This helped so much, thanks man!
Glad I could help! Thanks for the encouragement!
Hi Drake, looks like your sold out of mezerna 1L. Stocking up again soon?
Also can we clean these pads.Wool and foam for many uses? Keep crushing it!
We should be! It’s hard getting these products in so fast!! Everyone is buying! Ha it’s a good problem
@@DrakesDetailing yessss. Well done. Great to see this.
I’ll check back in a few days and see what you have.
Thanks!! You can try starke elevate! It’s very similar to menzerna 400!
👍 🎯On point ! LC Force Pads can no doubt work on the DA as well. If you have a 15mm or 21mm long throw you can also utilize the HDO pads as they have an additional layer of support on the backing face that enables the pads to last a bit longer .
💯💯💯
Great video. What do you recommend to buff out white PVC marks on a dark blue, gel coat hull? The PVC pipes were being used as guide posts for loading/unloading and left white lines on the side of the hull
Wool pad on rotary with a diminishing compound of your choice. But lately I’v really been loving shine supply’s compounds and polishes. Go check em’ out! shinesupply.com/
Dave
Thanks for the tips Washington state.
Great detail. Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all the great info! Do you add some water for lubrication when using the foam pads?
No, most of the compounds and policies you’ll use on a foam pad, have enough oils in them to keep them from burning the gelcoat.
@@DrakesDetailing I need to use it for marine paint. More specifically, Total Boat one part topside paint.
Gotcha. You still should be fine 👍🏻
@@DrakesDetailing came out perfect. 🤙🏼
How many pads does it take to typically polish & wax a boat? And can you use the DA polisher to do both?
Great vid...since i found this channel my 14 year old SeaVee is starting to look pretty good..thanks for this info and keep the content coming
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Hi. Thanks for your videos. You really give detail. If you do not mind to ask you, I Need to know which RPM IS Best for these pads. I got a dark blue boat that has oxidiszed
Hey bro! Which pads specifically?
What pad should be used for doing topside if a boat? Non skid? Etc.
Awesome videos, any chance on a rainy day can you do a full breakdown of what product to use with each pad and step by step from start to finish from heavy cutting to final steps of sealer and wax. Thanks.
Yes, that would make for a great video!
Hey man! Unfortunately I do not have any experience with this issue!
Facts! A man that understands the processes 💯
Can you put links for compounds you mentioned
Here’s is my website, www.detailusupply.com/
If you go under the compounds and polishes tab, they will all be listed there for purchase! 😎
hi Drake, is that away to recover very dull and oxidised clears with a polishing machine and some compound? thanks for video. top notch!
starke level R with a wool pad
Can you cut and polish over decals… what would your advice be when cutting and polishing a boat that has decals on it?
Yes you can, just ease your pressure a little bit while going over the decal.
I’m curious what are the science behind how pads are made specific to one particular type of machine vs another. If you can explain please let me know.
I can't.... But the force pads seem to be more dense
Hey Drake. I only have the Makita rotary. Is there not a pad that can be used to polish and buff after using the heavy cut wool pad? Looking to not buy another tool to do the second and third step. Thank you! Great content
Hey! for polishing you could use foam pads on the rotary, and one of my personal favorites is the purple foam-wool blend pad! here’s a link to some polishing rotary pads that I like.

love your videos :) do you have some experience with the 3M fast cut xl on gelcoat?
Thanks! No, I’m not a big 3m fan and never really have been. I don’t have any content on using their products.
@@DrakesDetailing i like your honesty
light oxidation, mostly white boat with a deep navy blue center area. recommend a polisher, and pads please. I did notice that you mentioned variations of speed when using products from when cutting to waxing. can you tell those speeds? DA or standard polisher? Excited to get started.
Then wax. Correct?
You got it!
Great Video! Thanks for sharing!
Hey darke what pad you use about a cloud in the boat after do a compound
Het man, I’m sorry I’m not quite sure what you mean
Great video it takes a lot of guess work out of choosing the right tools.
I do have a quick question if I can?
I own a 70’ yacht with a lot of surface area to work, it’s all painted white so no gel coat and very light oxidation. What could you recommend using to clean up and shine up with as few steps as possible but still get a lasting effect?
Hey bro! Try polishing it and then waxing it. Try some shine supply products. If you don’t get a sine or the wax dose not hold up then that’s how you know you need to cut deeper shinesupply.com/
😎 Thanks Drake! I have been watching your videos to learn how to restore my boat. Super helpful videos🛥⚓️
Awesome! thank you for watching!
Gr8 video!!! Manager of a detail department here. Thanks for the knowledge. Subbed!!
Is there any oxidation or fading?
@@DrakesDetailing I would say not much if any. I do have some scuff marks from docking I figured I’d try to get that off with acetone and white terry cloth. I do use my boat a couple times a week so it’s working and not sitting.
LOVE the videos man - truly. Thank you for sharing the info. Quick question on the Orange and White pads - if I am at the 'wax/polish' stage - do you change pads between application of wax and removal? Or just keep working the area until it shines? THANKS
Thanks bro! No just use the pads to apply and work in the compound and/or sealant, then just wipe off with a clean dry microfiber rag
Another great and informative video from Drake. Here's an idea for another video similar to this. Lets say you want to start a detailing company with $1,000 or $1,500 (you could obviously set the amount for your videro). But let's say somebody is sticking their toes in the water of detailing, not just washing. Could you do a video on a start up budget and what products you would recommend within the budget?? I think it would be a great idea. You have gotten me so far in my side hustle and love all of your videos!
Even including budget compounds/waxes, and budget buffers, i think it could deff reach a new audience for you.
We have some content just like that coming out in the future!!!
What compound do you use for heavy cut ?
