Drake - all of your videos are very very very informative and helpful. What's your opinion on Jescar Power Lock Plus vs. Jescar Ultralock Plus. The Ultralock Plus states it has all of the properties of Powerlock Plus AND it also has SiO2. Have you used the Ultralock at all? Would you recommend using the Power Lock Plus or the Ultralock Plus on the entire hull from rub rail down to include the full bottom AND also inside on non skid floor? Lastly I haven't seen you apply any sealant or SiO2 to the bottom of boats below the water line. Should we not be concerned with sealing and protecting the bottom?
First off, I have personally switched to using starke hyperhold instead of Jescar! I find hyperhold works better for boats in salt water! Second, don’t worry about waxing underneath. It will only last a few weeksn
Great info! Can you do a similar video on different levels of compounds, polishes, etc? Also is there a difference between polishing and waxing? Finally could you demonstrate how to ceramic coat using a polisher? Never knew that was a possibility.
LOVE the videos man - truly. Thank you for sharing the info. Quick question on the Orange and White pads - if I am at the 'wax/polish' stage - do you change pads between application of wax and removal? Or just keep working the area until it shines? THANKS
Drake, I have a boat with antifouling paint on the bottom. Are looking to remove it without harming the gel coat too much. Do you think a wool pad would remove the last bit of antifouling paint, after taking off the first few layers with paint stripper?
As usual your first hand knowledge being shared and once again you have my sincere thanks! Please re stock the store, both the orange pads and the Menzerna 400 were sold out - how am I supposed to give you some pay back 😜
Hi Drake. Thanks for another great video. You’re a good man for sharing your knowledge, especially for guys like me who are looking to move into marine from auto. Drake, you ‘re a big promoter of the Flex 3401, which is a great tool, but I’ve never heard you comment on the Flex 14-2 150 rotary, specifically its ability to match either the Mikita or Dewalt on gel coat. The Flex is 2 pounds lighter than the other two polishers and also has basically identical specs. Aside from price, why shouldn’t I buy the Flex. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this because I have a sneaking suspicion that you’ve put the Flex rotary to the test.
Thanks for watching! the flex rotary doesn't have to power that the makita has... on paper they are the same, but the flex kinda bogs down little, the makita does not.
Thanks Drake. I guess I’ll buy one of the big boys. And thanks again for being so transparent about how you run your business. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.
I put this comment on the red boat you did but it was meant for this one. (Great video!!! Thanks. I have a hard time getting some of the products names because you say them so fast. I keep repeating that part then google it to make sure I got it right. Thanks for the information super helpful.)
Awesome videos, any chance on a rainy day can you do a full breakdown of what product to use with each pad and step by step from start to finish from heavy cutting to final steps of sealer and wax. Thanks.
Hi Mate just been reading some of the comments so will wait for the next clip to come out the problem i seem to be getting on the foam pads is little balls of polish is it not replacing the pads or to much polish or me being rubbish with the flex lol Anyway keep the great work up its made me change the way im detailing boats
You may be using to much polish. All you really need is 4 small pea sized dots for a 2 x 2 section. After every 2x2 section clean the pad with a pad brush or some type of brush
I watch boating video cause it’s -11 degrees out side and I’m missing my boat. Regular maintenance and good care of boat if you are a diy guy may keep you from needing super cutting pads. Uro 50:50, microfiber cutting pad, and orange pad all you need if you take care of your baby.
I just came across your channel and what is forced rotation? You've probably mentioned it before but I just started watching. I've got a 1991 Sea Ray Sundancer 270DA that probably hasn't seen wax or a serious cleaning in years.
I’ll definitely be watching your vids a lot just subscribed I start my first boat detailing job Monday I’m very excited hoping it’s a awesome journey for me
You're in Pensacola, Really I'm shocked. Don't want to detailing for a living. Close to retiring from my second career. Just want to take care of my boat, vehicles and RV. First my boat 2016 Yamaha SX240. Great videos.
feeling overwhelmed w/all the products and processes. I have a WHITE 3 year old boat w/light oxydation that's been waxed/sealed twice. Looking for recommendations for pad/product combinations. Would like to limit to two steps but will do 3 if needed. I have a rotary and an DA. Thanks. While I know it's not conducive to RUclips, but a spread sheet for the most common situations showing pad/product combinations and steps would be great.
Hey bro! I use mostly shine supply products now, here’s a link to their compound and polish comparison chart! cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0645/8097/files/compounds.pdf?v=1646261121 If your boat is lightly oxidized I would recommend shine supply chop top, which is kinda like their one-step. Use that on a rotary with a yellow lake country wool pad on a rotary, and then again with a DA with an orange lake country forced rotation pad. Here’s a link to my website where the products are available😎 www.detailusupply.com/
Great info, I have been working on a 40 year old Boston Whaler all summer. Question --Do the buff and shine wool pad and lake country orange pad work on a DeWalt DPW849X .. ? The disc it came with has a Velcro fastener (are all of these pads hook & loop? description is not clear)
Hi Drake! Thanks for the videos, love the energy. I have a 1 year old boat, dark blue with no corrections needed. I want to polish and ceramic coat it. I am assuming the white Lake Country pad with my DA would be the correct application for this? Also how many pads would you need for a 30' bowrider. Thanks you my friend!
Hey Bro! I would use some Starke Elevate with an orange lake country forced rotation pad on either a DA or a Forced rotation, that will polish it out really nice! They just seal her up with some Starke Hyperhold polymer sealant with a DA and either a microfiber pad, or a general black waxing pad😎 Also, If you want to expand your knowledge of boat detailing, I also have a live recorded boat detailing class available as well. Feel free to check it out. You take it at your own pace 😎 www.detailuni.com/a/2147504321/GMGkUUpS
My trophy 21 ft was badly oxidized. I bought presto products and after cutting with their black/white cutting pad. The pads is throwing like hair crime hair wool from the pad. How long should a cutting pad last? I followed all your recommendations and hull looks amazing. Boat didn’t look this good new! Dave Thanks for the tips Washington state.
Another great and informative video from Drake. Here's an idea for another video similar to this. Lets say you want to start a detailing company with $1,000 or $1,500 (you could obviously set the amount for your videro). But let's say somebody is sticking their toes in the water of detailing, not just washing. Could you do a video on a start up budget and what products you would recommend within the budget?? I think it would be a great idea. You have gotten me so far in my side hustle and love all of your videos!
Great video. What do you recommend to buff out white PVC marks on a dark blue, gel coat hull? The PVC pipes were being used as guide posts for loading/unloading and left white lines on the side of the hull
Wool pad on rotary with a diminishing compound of your choice. But lately I’v really been loving shine supply’s compounds and polishes. Go check em’ out! shinesupply.com/
Great video bro! it was great to see a focused video on one subject. Much easier to digest. Could you also do a video like this on all the waxes, cleaners, polishers, etc. all those liquids your using haha
Hey thanks for the video. Very informative. Boat coming out of the water next week for some love. Living in Spain sometimes I find it hard to find what I'm looking for. Have a better idea now.
light oxidation, mostly white boat with a deep navy blue center area. recommend a polisher, and pads please. I did notice that you mentioned variations of speed when using products from when cutting to waxing. can you tell those speeds? DA or standard polisher? Excited to get started.
So Drake I’m going to attempt to seal my boat this weekend with jeskar power lock. My 23’ cc boat is about 4 months old and I’m just wanting to keep up on the Maintenace myself. Man do you think the power lock will suffice w/ microfiber pad or do I need to polish with a compound before I seal it. All I have is griot da. Thank you for the wealth of info you share !!
@@DrakesDetailing I would say not much if any. I do have some scuff marks from docking I figured I’d try to get that off with acetone and white terry cloth. I do use my boat a couple times a week so it’s working and not sitting.
Thanks for making this video. We are used to detailing cars and not boats. Just bought a boat and it need a polish bad what would you recommend for a polish and a wax ?
Hi Drake, I am doing a customers 20 foot boat and it’s the first boat I have ever done. I’ve done my research and have everything I need to do. My question is, how much of a boat do you normally do? Do you do the outside hull all the way to the bottom or just the waterline, do you do every bit of gel coat inside the boat all the way to the floor of the boat? I’m sure it’s customer preference but what do you normally do?? That’s for your videos!
Hey bro! It’s whatever the customer is paying for. Typically a lot of customers want exterior topside compound, polish and seal as well as the hull sides.
Great Videos. I need to refinish my non skid. I watched your video on that, again great video. My question is, my non skid is not really oxidized, not chalky anyway, but has lost it's luster and has stains on it. Should I use a wool pad and heavy cut compound. What is your opinion on using a brush on a DA? Thanks.
Great video Drake, learned a bunch. This may be a tough question to answer, but is there a way you decide the condition of the gelcoat to determine what process/products to use to correct?
Years of experience! ha The best way is todo a small 2 ft x 2ft test spot. use what you think the boat needs and see how it looks. Thats the best way to see
I’m curious what are the science behind how pads are made specific to one particular type of machine vs another. If you can explain please let me know.
Newbie here. Every boat and it's gel coat condition is different. With so many pad choices, and some of those work better on different machines, what wax and what polish... Holy cow, it's enough to scramble your brain to the point it's not worth the hassle. 😑 Nice of you to explain it though...🙏
I currently have a new black boat with very little oxidation marks. Should I use the orange pad with the 400, then follow it with the Micro fiber pad? What Polish do you recommend with the microfiber pad? Love the videos.
If your boat just has light, scratch marks, and light oxidation, use the 400 with the orange pad, then you can use the microfiber pad to apply your sealant. Do a small section and see how it looks. You may have to do deeper cutting if the 400 isn’t strong enough to pull the scratching oxidation out of the black gelcoat.
If you are using a rotary to finish, you can definitely use a rotary to buy the wax afterwards. If I just dedicate those pads to wax, then I don’t even bother, washing them out, since wax/sealant will be going back in there next time anyways.
Great videos have learned so much from them all. I have a 1999 272 sailfish that i am looking forward to compounding and polishing come spring when the snow is gone up here in the north east. In your videos you use multiple different buffers during your system. A video on the differences between them would be great, my budget only allows me to buy 1 so if you could only have one buffer which one would you pick and what if any things i would need to be carful with...
Thank you! So, I get this question all of the time. If you have a 99 there is probably going to some fading or oxidation. For lower budges Id get a cheaper rotary and a ccheaper da. Harbor freight has decent machines for around $70 each. You really need the rotary to compound, and the da to wax and polish.
Drake, Great Video. How do I determine how much oxidation I have to cut? I have a 2010 38' white hull and topsides that have been neglected for a few years.
I have a customer on an RV..I have most of these things from my auto detailing other than the wool pad...my question is..what product do you use with it? Thanks dude!
Great video it takes a lot of guess work out of choosing the right tools. I do have a quick question if I can? I own a 70’ yacht with a lot of surface area to work, it’s all painted white so no gel coat and very light oxidation. What could you recommend using to clean up and shine up with as few steps as possible but still get a lasting effect?
Hey bro! Try polishing it and then waxing it. Try some shine supply products. If you don’t get a sine or the wax dose not hold up then that’s how you know you need to cut deeper shinesupply.com/
Thanks for the informative video. Question: What pad should I use on deck non-skid, the type that looks like it’s sprayed on and leaves a grit surface. I have a Griots machine and Menzerna 400. Boat is one season old and surface is off-white. I have some Griots orange pads but think the non-skid will tear them up. Just looking to get the deck shined up.
What will I use on the front bow of my 380 Express to clean and buff a wool or foam as being told can’t use foam as pad will rip apart because of bow surface Keep up with the videos great job and I enjoy watching them
Hey Man! So you actually wanna clean the areas that are going to be buffed before buffing your boat. Use a really good boat soap, or Dawn dishwashing soap if it’s really bad. Then, you start to buff. Reason being, all the micro dirt will contaminate the pad and you’ll be grinding dirt and grime into the boat as your trying to buff and it will give you kind of a crappy finish. As for buffing non-skin surfaces on your bow (which is what I believe you are referring to), here’s a good video I put out a while back! This will really help depending on what type of non-skid you have! Hope this helps!! m.ruclips.net/video/ibfh8ucS1K8/видео.html
Would really like your opinion of 3M Perfect Gelcoat Light. Part number 36110. I have a boat that was waxed from top to bottom 2 years ago. She still has a good shine to her and thought about using this 3M product. Is it worth a look in your opinion? Thanks! And nice job on the explanation of the use of pads. Was very helpful!!
I have a white boat with a decent non-skid and gel coat. (No caulking or serious staining). I was thinking of cutting with the wool pad with compound. Then using polish and applying with the orange pad. Then spraying the seal on top of that like you spoke about in another video of yours. What are your thoughts on those steps?
Hi Drake. You videos are VERY informative. I've only recently discovered you. Do you, or will you have anything on restoring Awlgrip paint. Mine is tired, and I want to stall repainting for a few more years. I understand Awlgrip is unique... it separates as it cures into a base (the color or pigment) and a clear coat that migrates to the top. Any aggressive cutting or polishing can destroy the clear gloss coat. Any advice or tips. There are thousands of us out here with this issue, and I'm hoping you have thoughts to save the day!
Good explanation man! I’m trying to do a one step with my boat (I know not the best) but using 3M cleaner and wax. Which pad should I use? Orange? Thanks!
I’m new to polishing, So did I get it right? First heavy cut if it’s a lot of oxidation, then medium cut or polish with a light cut. Then wax. Correct?

Hey when your done compounding, and ready to do the polishing. Do you usually do a two step or one step? I’m confused about the two can you explain, and when to do it.

Great info! Can you do a similar video on different levels of compounds, polishes, etc? Also is there a difference between polishing and waxing? Finally could you demonstrate how to ceramic coat using a polisher? Never knew that was a possibility.
Great Video Ideas! thank you!
Yacht just got a fresh gel coating..what would you recommended to put on it to protect it?
LOVE the videos man - truly. Thank you for sharing the info. Quick question on the Orange and White pads - if I am at the 'wax/polish' stage - do you change pads between application of wax and removal? Or just keep working the area until it shines? THANKS
Thanks bro! No just use the pads to apply and work in the compound and/or sealant, then just wipe off with a clean dry microfiber rag
Please re stock the store, both the orange pads and the Menzerna 400 were sold out - how am I supposed to give you some pay back 😜
Yes, we sold out quick! So sorry! We should have more on stock ASAP!
Got a 31' 5th wheel that needs some TLC....glad I found your channel. Now I know the order/color of pads to use.
You Rock!
Awesome video...just starting out in boat detailing
I put this comment on the red boat you did but it was meant for this one. (Great video!!! Thanks. I have a hard time getting some of the products names because you say them so fast. I keep repeating that part then google it to make sure I got it right. Thanks for the information super helpful.)
Glad it helped!
Thanks, I am starting my boat tomorrow
Awesome!
Awesome videos, any chance on a rainy day can you do a full breakdown of what product to use with each pad and step by step from start to finish from heavy cutting to final steps of sealer and wax. Thanks.
Yes, that would make for a great video!
Hi Mate just been reading some of the comments so will wait for the next clip to come out
the problem i seem to be getting on the foam pads is little balls of polish is it not replacing the pads or to much polish or me being rubbish with the flex lol
Anyway keep the great work up its made me change the way im detailing boats
You may be using to much polish.
All you really need is 4 small pea sized dots for a 2 x 2 section.
After every 2x2 section clean the pad with a pad brush or some type of brush
I watch boating video cause it’s -11 degrees out side and I’m missing my boat. Regular maintenance and good care of boat if you are a diy guy may keep you from needing super cutting pads. Uro 50:50, microfiber cutting pad, and orange pad all you need if you take care of your baby.
Thats right! proper care is the way to go!
I just came across your channel and what is forced rotation? You've probably mentioned it before but I just started watching. I've got a 1991 Sea Ray Sundancer 270DA that probably hasn't seen wax or a serious cleaning in years.
GREAT VIDEO, can you tell what size of backing pad you use on a 8" wool compounding pad?
7 inch backing plate
I’ll definitely be watching your vids a lot just subscribed I start my first boat detailing job Monday I’m very excited hoping it’s a awesome journey for me
Awesome! good luck my friend!
You're in Pensacola, Really I'm shocked. Don't want to detailing for a living. Close to retiring from my second career. Just want to take care of my boat, vehicles and RV. First my boat 2016 Yamaha SX240. Great videos.
Thanks
Just found yr channel - wow.... great info and advice
Please try to make a video applying ceramic with a da. Thanks
I will when I can!
Pretty awesome! I didn't even know where to begin?
Great Information and useful information. Thanks so much so helpful
Getting ready to buff and wax my boat for the first time! This helped so much, thanks man!
Glad I could help! Thanks for the encouragement!
feeling overwhelmed w/all the products and processes.
Hey bro! I use mostly shine supply products now, here’s a link to their compound and polish comparison chart! cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0645/8097/files/compounds.pdf?v=1646261121
If your boat is lightly oxidized I would recommend shine supply chop top, which is kinda like their one-step. Use that on a rotary with a yellow lake country wool pad on a rotary, and then again with a DA with an orange lake country forced rotation pad. Here’s a link to my website where the products are available😎

They just seal her up with some Starke Hyperhold polymer sealant with a DA and either a microfiber pad, or a general black waxing pad😎
Also, If you want to expand your knowledge of boat detailing, I also have a live recorded boat detailing class available as well.
Dave
Thanks for the tips Washington state.
Even including budget compounds/waxes, and budget buffers, i think it could deff reach a new audience for you.
We have some content just like that coming out in the future!!!
😎 Thanks Drake! I have been watching your videos to learn how to restore my boat. Super helpful videos🛥⚓️
Awesome! thank you for watching!
Thank you for the information!👍
Thanks for watching!
Yes!!! They are needed! I actually prefer making these types of videos!
Hey thanks for the video. Very informative. Boat coming out of the water next week for some love. Living in Spain sometimes I find it hard to find what I'm looking for. Have a better idea now.
Glad I could help!
light oxidation, mostly white boat with a deep navy blue center area. recommend a polisher, and pads please.
Is there any oxidation or fading?
Thats the best way to see
@@DrakesDetailing Thanks, keep making your videos they are a great help.
Gr8 video!!! Manager of a detail department here. Thanks for the knowledge. Subbed!!
I’m curious what are the science behind how pads are made specific to one particular type of machine vs another. If you can explain please let me know.
I can't.... But the force pads seem to be more dense
Great video do use Ardex ocean polymer ever? If so thoughts as a sealant final coat
Yes it’s a great product!
Great informative video, like always I liked it
Thanks Bro!
Drake you gotta re stock! I need these supply’s. When do you think things will be in stock?
Probably a few weeks! We are selling out like crazy!!! Try detailedimage.com they sell these pads
Good videos. Learned a lot. '15 Seahunt Triton 225. Thanks
Good stuff! Thanks for watching and following!
Great vid...since i found this channel my 14 year old SeaVee is starting to look pretty good..thanks for this info and keep the content coming
Awesome! Glad I could help!
Newbie here. Every boat and it's gel coat condition is different. With so many pad choices, and some of those work better on different machines, what wax and what polish... Holy cow, it's enough to scramble your brain to the point it's not worth the hassle. 😑
Nice of you to explain it though...🙏
Haha no worries at all. It can be a little confusing sometimes, but I’m always here to help if you have questions!
Couple questions: how do you clean wax out of foam pads? Is there anything wrong with using a foam pad with a rotary for waxing?
You really need the rotary to compound, and the da to wax and polish.
hi Drake, is that away to recover very dull and oxidised clears with a polishing machine and some compound? thanks for video. top notch!
starke level R with a wool pad
Drake, Great Video. How do I determine how much oxidation I have to cut? I have a 2010 38' white hull and topsides that have been neglected for a few years.
I’m going to go over that in my next video, should be out Friday!
I have a customer on an RV..I have most of these things from my auto detailing other than the wool pad...my question is..what product do you use with it? Thanks dude!
Hi Drake, looks like your sold out of mezerna 1L. Stocking up again soon?
Also can we clean these pads.Wool and foam for many uses? Keep crushing it!
We should be! It’s hard getting these products in so fast!! Everyone is buying! Ha it’s a good problem
@@DrakesDetailing yessss. Well done. Great to see this.
I’ll check back in a few days and see what you have.
Thanks!! You can try starke elevate! It’s very similar to menzerna 400!
Wish I had an old fiberglass hull to practice on. I'm afraid to mess up my hull with swirl marks or something only I could mess up 😂.
Hahah, it all takes practice
Thanks for the informative video. Question: What pad should I use on deck non-skid, the type that looks like it’s sprayed on and leaves a grit surface. I have a Griots machine and Menzerna 400. Boat is one season old and surface is off-white. I have some Griots orange pads but think the non-skid will tear them up. Just looking to get the deck shined up.
a wool pad will do just fine! go check out my how to buff and wax non skid video
What will I use on the front bow of my 380 Express to clean and buff a wool or foam as being told can’t use foam as pad will rip apart because of bow surface
Keep up with the videos great job and I enjoy watching them
Should be fine!
Just keep it sealed with starke hyper hold
Hey man! Unfortunately I do not have any experience with this issue!
Good explanation man! I’m trying to do a one step with my boat (I know not the best) but using 3M cleaner and wax. Which pad should I use? Orange? Thanks!
probably the grey foam!
I’m new to polishing, So did I get it right? First heavy cut if it’s a lot of oxidation, then medium cut or polish with a light cut. Then wax. Correct?
You got it!
Thanks for all the great info! Do you add some water for lubrication when using the foam pads?
No, most of the compounds and policies you’ll use on a foam pad, have enough oils in them to keep them from burning the gelcoat.
@@DrakesDetailing I need to use it for marine paint. More specifically, Total Boat one part topside paint.
Gotcha. You still should be fine 👍🏻
@@DrakesDetailing came out perfect. 🤙🏼
Hi. Thanks for your videos. You really give detail. If you do not mind to ask you, I Need to know which RPM IS Best for these pads. I got a dark blue boat that has oxidiszed
Hey bro! Which pads specifically?
Hey when your done compounding, and ready to do the polishing. Do you usually do a two step or one step? I’m confused about the two can you explain, and when to do it.
What pad should be used for doing topside if a boat? Non skid? Etc.
Hi drake, sweet videos man! Just curious have you ever tried the Meguiars marine stuff is it any good at all or a waste of money? Thanks in advance
Hey bro! Yes Meguiers is not really good at all, ha! It works terrible in my opinion and is kinda a waste of money, go extra mile and use Menzerna, Presta, Chop shop, and even Starke are good products.
Rupes and buff and shine microfiber cutting pads … is what I like personally
We all have something different we like 😊
Thanks for all the great information!
Why are you not affiliated with Starke anymore but you still recommended them in the video?
I filmed this video while still with them, they broke our deal and we parted ways.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome job Drake. Big fan!
Awesome! I really appreciate you watching!
There is none of your video that I haven’t seen. All the best wishes from Gold Coast, Australia.
That’s encouraging!
