Hi Drake. Just Strted Watching your Videos. Love how you take Pride in your work. I Own a Yacht Restoration Company in FL.. What might save you time and Paper. Is, in the Begging of the Job. We Prep the Teak decks by using a New 1.5 inch Chisel with a 45 angle on one end,, to actually shave the Caulking down first. It usually cuts it like butter. Then when you start Sanding Process, you are already sanding Flush and don't have to worry about sanding through Caulking First. Love your Channel
i learned so much from this video. listen, i literally have to do this job tomorrow and it will be my first time, watching this video has given me lots of confidence. thank you.
Sup drake hey I use a razor blade to level the caulk before sanding. Curl the corners so they don't snag, keep it at a low level and the excess caulk comes off quick and easy. Knocks down on your sanding. I second the forced rotation da - I like festool for this. Nice vid bro.
Good cheaper alternative to the Mirka system is a Bosch GET65-5n or -6n with a shop vac and sanding mesh. Great dust collection and having the forced rotation with dust collection is hard to find. I own 3 of them in my boat repair shop. You did a good job explaining this though. I love watching your videos bro. I remove the caulk and recaulk if the customer is going to pay for it, otherwise it's best imo to use a 2 part teak cleaner as it really does a good job. Totalboat has a decent 2 part cleaner. Never fall for 1 part teak cleaner.
I used the Semco on my freshly grinded teak deck and it looks beautiful. I chose the transparant teak sealer (semco) and it looks great. Thank you for the advise with the semco product, and great video with easy instructions! Thanks mate.
Another solid video learned a lot once again. I was wondering after watching your non skid buff video if that’s something you include in a wash and wax package or an up charge. If you don’t always buff the non skid do you wax still or just top off with Si coating. Can’t thank you enough for the high quality detailed videos been watching for months now🤙

Thank you for sharing. Very informative. Hope some day you make a video of how to deal with damaged teak caulking and how to apply fresh caulking. Thank you bro.
Got a project to do, customer has varnished their team deck and put sand in it to make it anti slip. I’m convincing him to bring it back to bare teak and oil it, It looks naff. I’m thinking 60 grit to get the varnish off, re caulk and and with 80’ to get the excess caulk off, then teak oil it to finish? Let me know if you think anything could be done better. EPIC CHANNEL!
Thank You, I really needed this info, with so many videos on teak diy this was very informative and helpful. I have 2 questions… 1) I know you mentioned no oils/stains but do you have a video on diy oil/stain application? 2) how do I do the trim or get those close edges I avoid?
@@martybernal8977 I work at a marina and sand/oil teak often. I always double tape around the edges of the teak to prevent nicking the gelcoat. Those tighter areas that you can’t get with a sander will require hand sanding as best as you can. I use Star Brite Premium Golden Teak Oil and literally just use a rag to apply it and I always do 2 coats. It’s a brighter stain and looks great. Happy customers every time
I just finished a job, I am not too proud of. All the exterior teak on a 35 ft sailboat. I was to sand and coat all surfaces with six coats of Sikens Cetol. But the boat is on the water in a river. The wind blew 18 to 22 mph almost every day, and every night birds pooped all over the newly coated surfaces. Most of the deck hardware had to be taped off rather than removed (stanchions, cleats, winches etc...) and the teak was heavily grooved. So, I didn't sand enough as it would have made for 1/4" raised areas under each piece of metal. Now I wish I had sanded the he'll out of it anyway.
Try a small spot and see. It depends how long it has soaked for… it may only be on the surface layer, or it could have soaked through the entire plank of teak.
Thank you for your videos. I've learned a ton. I was binge watching past episodes and purchased a few products after. In addition to other recommended tools, I purchased Jescar Power Lock, Woody Wax, and McKee's Nautical One Hydro Rinse SiO2 Coating. The problem is I can't remember what to use where - do you have a cheat sheet?
Thanks for watching! Jescar will be your wax on smooth gel coat, you can also use it on your non skid. Apply once every 4 to 6 months. Woody wax is great on your metal! Hydro rinse is great as a topper on the Jescar, once a month or so after washing, spray on the product and rise off immediately
@@DrakesDetailing one last question. After I lay the wax down, should I keep using Purple Power for regular washing (dirt, fish blood, bird poop, etc.) or switch to a boat soap?
Switch to starke pure clean! It won’t hurt the wax. drakesmarinedetailsupply.com/collections/starke-surface-technology/products/starke-pure-clean-boat-soap
i have some teak on my old sailboat that the previous owner finished with polyurethane and it is now flaking off in some places. i can't seem to find any videos on refinishing teak that has been sealed with polyurethane. how would I go about that?
Can you use a Flex 3401VRG for sanding along with a shop vac? I'm a DIYer on a 57 foot trawler and I have a large cockpit, side decks and Portugeuese bridge with teak decking. I use the Flex for polishing gelcoat, and it would be great to use that for sanding as well. What are your thoughts?

Hi Drake, a question - I have both fibreglass and teak restoration to do on my boat; which should I do first? Thx
I’d do fiberglass first… then teak
nice job! Also nice fishing chair, that one is not cheap..... Release Marine Tirllion (or carolina) fighting chair
No doubt! Those fighting chairs are crazy expensive!
If you just doing a small section like hoverboards instead of buying part A and Part B in quantity can I just use a diluted solution of muriatic acid?
I suppose you could, but I like staying consistent with every job like this
Hi Drake i have dropped oven cleaner on my teak floor its gone jet black would you think sanding will remove it.

Just strip it with a good degreasing stub, then do all the same steps! 😎

Looking to hire out a teak deck refinish in the Brunswick, GA area. Can you give me a general idea of expected pricing per sq/ft?
Hey bro! It’s been a while since I’ve done this. I’d say between 3-$6 per square foot
How do you price between just a Teak wash/clean decking, Sanding of decking or Toe rail, and sealing toe rail?
How much did you spend in expenses and charge for the job? Do you measure out how much teak there is or go by day?
Is it okay to get the part A and B on the gelcoat or the outside of the hull if you're doing teak gunnels?.... also is it the same 80-grit process for teak gunnels?
It should be fine, just make sure that you rinse it off the gel quickly. Nothing sitting on the gel for too long is ever good
