Well done mate. It does get easier, and the confidence will grow. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from other truckers if you’re struggling, most good drivers will! Keep smiling, drive safe 👍
Currently training as a class 2 driver and this is my biggest fear, not being sure of things! I’m glad to hear that more experienced drivers will help you learn the ropes! Class 1 is my ultimate goal, and I’d be more than happy to help new drivers come 10 years time!
A long time ago I went to a Royal Mail depot in East London. The depot had just opened and was virtually empty. I was on a bay and saw another truck arrive in an otherwise empty yard. The driver tried to reverse onto a bay about 6/7 to my left and made a right pig's ear of it. I watched from the cab for about 5 minutes and he got it close several times but couldn't get the trailer exactly right and usually ran out of space before the truck was in a straight line. I went to speak to him... "Hello mate - are you by any chance fairly new at this?" "Er yeah. Actually this is my first day. They sent me here from Maidstone." "Right. Would you like some help?" "Er yes please." I talked him onto the bay and we got the truck right where it should have been and straight. He looked chuffed, with a big grin. I took the grin right off his face when I said, "OK now go round the building and do it again. I'll wait here..." He went round and we did it again. And again. I think we did it about 4 times. Then I said to him, "This is a glorious opportunity to practice. The depot is empty - what staff there are, are busy, and you can use your time to work out all the little things you need to do with nobody looking and especially taking the piss. Enjoy yourself." I said once you get a bit better imagine the bays either side are occupied and go between two imaginary trailers. I talked him through a couple of more times and then said I needed to go back to Swindon. The last thing I said was if he ever saw someone struggling he should offer to help. I said don't stand and just gawp and make people feel bad - go and offer to help. I like to think he made a good job of driving a truck. I certainly hope so... By contrast I worked in Woolworths depot in Swindon - now closed - just after passing my Class1 around 2006. I was taking my time to avoid any unpleasantness - I was about 53 myself - and was yelled at by a fat guy in his 50's who worked in the yard. He proceeded to demand if I wanted him to park the trailer for me and insisted on pointing out his vast European experience of 'over half-a-million miles tramping'. When I asked him if that was what made him fat and bad-tempered he was apoplectic but he shut up... He was an example of everything wrong with the industry and tried to feed his own ego at the expense of everyone else. I hope he retired poor...
That woolys in Swindon was a right chew to get on. Down a ramp with metal stands holding the canopy up that you cant see and you had to have doors open before you reversed in/ seen many drivers pull doors off. That fat ginger git was called Geoge and I was there when he shouted at an Irish driver who promptly knocked his front teeth out.
Good for you 37 years ago I picked up my first load in the yard in Newcastle 1 drop in Cornwall, collected in Exeter and delivered to Glasgow. after a year I picked up my first European load for Istanbul. Im currently working in the middle east . That class 1 license has had me in north Africa and everywhere in-between . Its just a shame that there's not as many companies in the UK doing continental work now.
As someone who aspires to do this one day, I was proud of you when you were parked in the lay-by after leaving the yard, and the sound of joy in your voice! Safe driving my friend 👍🏼
I was where you were about 8 months ago. Some will help, and some will watch you struggle. Just stay calm and don't be distracted by "Mr. Chief Class 1 driver" who thinks he knows everything. Just stick with what you have learnt. There is a lot of people in the industry who SERIOUSLY need to go back to school. Don't take crap of planners who think they own YOU and Your hours and licence. Because They DONT! stay safe through all negativity the job is good. It's people that spoil it. Stay safe bro and enjoy it.
Well done on passing your LGV Class 1. I have over 30 years off Class 1 driving experience and the best advice I can give you about reversing is don't be rushed by anyone, take your time. The more time you spend doing reversing the easier it will get, it all comes with practice. If your unsure about a situation get out and have a look first and assess what needs to be done in your mind first. If you have a major blind spot try and find someone to help guide you in, They can keep you informed off what you can't see. Not always someone around to help but it's worth an ask.
I second this. Also, shunt as many times as you need to. And be aware of other drivers in the yard but also forget about what they think of your driving, we were all there once. After a bit you'll get that comfortable in the trucks you'll see a tiny yard and just know instinctively you can 180 it in there and get it back round lol
Hi Trucker Taf, I'm so glad I got see this video and witness the positivity that you bring to this industry. I've seen all the videos of old drivers dissuading people from becoming a HGV driver and all of the videos of trucking accidents and it put me in a negative, worried headspace but seeing videos by truckers like you and like LukeCinaHGV, that love their jobs, shows me that I could really end up enjoying the job (I want to be a HGV driver) if I adopt the right mindset. Thank you!
I'm will start my HGV career this summer (female, over 50). 8 weeks driving school starting July. I can't wait but I have realistic expectations. Thank you very much for writing how long certain manoeuvres took you to complete as a newbie. In a strange way, that gave me confidence that I too will succeed.
I really really like how you gave an honest time frame of how long it took you to get on and off of bays and out of places. It gives people new people like me hope lol you looked like you were loving it good job 😁
Well done I remember my first day as private hire taxi driver at Stansted airport I thought I had made a massive mistake changing jobs I am still there 21 years later You will get more confident with experience
Well done mate, great video. I've just got my Mod 4 to do, and then I'll hopefully be starting my first Class 1 job. Your video helped gain a little insight, thanks bud 🙂
Well done , i passed my class 1 7 months ago , got a Tanker job straight away , learn't loads since and can even reverse to a degree :p Other drivers in company have taught me loads and been very helpful . Doing 4 on 4 off which helps so plenty of time off to recover 3 nights out .
Im a relatively new pass on Class 1, around ten months, but was lucky enough to be able to spend a month shunting before hitting the road which helped massively. I got loads of help and advice from colleagues too which helped boost my confidence. Nonetheless, the first few weeks on the road and new locations was quite nerve wracking. It's a great feeling when it finally clicks and you can assess and deal with any situations you come may come across though :)
Good job, the art of reversing is don't go from lock to lock feed it in gently and take it off and put more on as you go backwards. Always get out if your not sure and have look but getting it as lined up as you can in the first place really helps.
A word of advice. When backing under the trailer make sure your fifth wheel coupling is level with the slide plate. Especially with air suspension because I've known other drivers leaving the trailer high when uncoupling which could mean that if you dump all the suspension air out of the unit you could end up being too low and the pin could ride right over the fifth wheel turntable and you'll end up backing the unit cab into the front of the trailer headboard. Then you'll have a pig of a job getting out of it cause the pin will be trapped between the turntable and the rear of the cab. Always make sure that the slide plate tou he's the fifth wheel turntable when backing under the trailer.

Wow, I know that place! Such a small world! Premier Paper in Dartford. Done some agency work for them before. Nice place, nice job, nice stuff. Tip: If you ever go there again, spin round, and reverse in from the other side. That saves you reversing in blind side! As a new driver, always try and avoid blind side reversing on your left side, if you can. It will make a it a lot easier for you! Also, if you are ever unsure, ask another driver for help. Most drivers are friendly:) Safe trucking. Take care
Hi taf, I just subscribed I have 9 years class 2 and had class 1 just 8 months I know how your feeling the excitement of your first time .Same as me took a few shunts to get on bay to begin with but it does get easier I have had about 4 months solid class 1 driving through different agency once you get 1 year experience your chances of finding jobs will get easier at the moment a lot of companys want a minimum of 2 years or 1 year.
I know it's been a month but I have been to that 1st yard and reversing in there is horrible, when you reverse to the bay the big metal building is in your way so you see nothing of the back of trailer till you are round the metal building haha good job reversing onto that road too its pretty tight good job dude!
well done mate! i passed my class 1 around 6 months ago and boy i learnt quickly that the test doesnt prepare you for driving haha. its always a learning curve bud as ive learnt, just be patient and youll be fine
Congratulations I'm going out for the first time on my own tomorrow to a place in Coventry which is over a 100 miles from where my depot is and I have to be honest I'm so nervous as I know I'm not going to be as good as most drivers I meet at the depot I'm dropping to anyways I wish you all the best for the future I've dropped a like and subbed take care an keep the great content coming
Well done , passed my class one on Friday so looking for a job now , did 3 months as a class 2 driver but did not like it way to heavy work multi drop pushing gages that were 200 to 300 kg .
Well done fella, I did the same and started making stuff for RUclips. All the reversing comes with time. You'll soon pickup the feel for how the trailer moves etc. Just a word of advice..... when you park... make sure that the unit is 100% in line with the trailer. The forklift drivers will hit the wheel arches if not careful when they load/unload from the side.
The wheel arches on the unit are specifically built to be hit by forklift drivers so they know when to stop. They will also stop everything and inform you straight away that they have damaged your truck, giving details and stating in writing that it was their fault entirely. This comes in handy when explaining to your transport manager who will always be sympathetic and understanding when it comes to unexplained damage. TIP..... Keep your eye on those FLT drivers and good luck.
Well done and what a brilliant video for your first. For the reversing and to get confidence up try asking the place of work if you could spend a morning just reversing onto bays. On and off for a good couple hours. Eventually it will then become second nature. Also a friend of mine once said don't be a c**t and do a shunt. That for me has taken away some of the nerves when reversing. Hope this helps you 👍👍
Awesome work. I find it amazing that there is no apprenticeship law for haulage industry. Right out of training, drivers are thrown into the deep end. That's wild and so very dangerous. They're forced to refresh from RUclips - my word. Stay safe, dude. Hope it gets better for you. Your enthusiasm is incredible!
Well done fella reversing takes time and it’ll come second nature, make sure you keep your unit aligned with trailer as forklift drivers like to hit things, just also remember as your a professional driver take your time. Keep on trucking plus yorkie bars are on you
Just a quick one mate. Always secure the pump truck upright. Don't leave it on its side like a dead fish because. . A- it will leak oil and fuck it up, and B- it'll slide all over the place and cause damage to the trailer. Small but important advice a transport manager will pick you up on. You can strap it down by using the internal securing rings. Takes 30secs. Also park the unit straight and not on the piss when tipping where possible. Reason being, Matey on forks comes straight in and bang! There go the unit lenses. Fork drivers don't give a fuk generally speaking and all they will do, after smashing the fuk out of the trailer is look at you like a fucking corpse! Not critising, just detailing. Its the little but important things that make a good wagon driver a professional. Best of luck mate. 👍
Ace mate 👌 my job was driving class2 I have just passed class1 and its as you made it look, Fun! And I can relate to when You said I can't believe I'm driving this.... well done brother
Congratulations brother... Every class 1 driver has had some very similar first reverse experience and, like you, those that keep going until success is achieved, go on and enjoy the skills you now have. As all know, a few more reverses and the much feared but doable blind-sides, and it'll only get better and better. Three cheers for you! 😊
That was not the point. I’m sure if you look at the title and duration of the video, you can agree with me that there’s no way my first day lasted just under 6mins. That video was just a summary of the day, not everything was recorded.

Thank you! The reversing bit is a bit of a challenge to be honest, but the more you do it the easier it becomes
Well done mate, keep going just take your time you will get there.
Dont rush ,we all start like that
I know it's been a month but I have been to that 1st yard and reversing in there is horrible, when you reverse to the bay the big metal building is in your way so you see nothing of the back of trailer till you are round the metal building haha good job reversing onto that road too its pretty tight good job dude!
first day and having to deal with snow. good for you man! congrats!
Gaining experience with a smile on your face, the most important bit. Enjoy and have fun :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm so relieved seeing this mate. I'd been nervous if id ever fit in but now I'm more confident.
Thanks, mate 👍
well done mate! i passed my class 1 around 6 months ago and boy i learnt quickly that the test doesnt prepare you for driving haha. its always a learning curve bud as ive learnt, just be patient and youll be fine
would u recommend going class 1 from car or class 2.
@@stealthkick i went straight through to class 1 bud, if you dont feel comfortable you could always do your class 1 but get some class 2 experience
Just passed mine on Friday, joining a job after Christmas. Im pretty worried about first day thanks for the vid

We'll done well done
Well done , passed my class one on Friday so looking for a job now , did 3 months as a class 2 driver but did not like it way to heavy work multi drop pushing gages that were 200 to 300 kg .
I was on class 2 for a year. All the best in your job search
congratulations. top job! keep the videos coming. You might inspire me to pick up some weekend Class 1 shifts
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks much. I will surely take note
@@TruckerTaf that was the big lesson I learnt!.... The hard way 😂
@@TruckerTaf good lad mate make sure there is a full vlog and full pov vlog and lots of trucking vlogs for RUclips mate
@@callumkemp2648 stay tuned mate. I’m definitely gonna bring more content
Well done mate.
Hope this helps you 👍👍
Well done pal & good luck👍
Awesome work. I find it amazing that there is no apprenticeship law for haulage industry. Right out of training, drivers are thrown into the deep end. That's wild and so very dangerous. They're forced to refresh from RUclips - my word. Stay safe, dude. Hope it gets better for you. Your enthusiasm is incredible!
It wasn't til the late 60s til there was any test at all anyone could get in a big truck and drive.
Well done fella reversing takes time and it’ll come second nature, make sure you keep your unit aligned with trailer as forklift drivers like to hit things, just also remember as your a professional driver take your time. Keep on trucking plus yorkie bars are on you
Thanks for the tips!
Will be getting my license next month here in South Africa. Hopefully we can get started soon
May the force be with you
Congratulations, mate, and enjoy your new job 👍 👏 Wish I could have my time again as I think I would love to be an HGV driver 😢
You did really well. You can be proud of yourself. It will become second nature now
Well done mate!
Well done, get used to being nervous it’s part of the job
Well done
Nice one bro. Im doing my license
4:50 I bet if you went back now you’d reverse in there on first try! 😎
Got my practical test tomorrow 🎉
Good luck Taf
We'll done my first shift was with royal mail 29 years ago and been all over the world driving 🤠🤠
That's cool! Strap your pumptrack to the rail mate;)
Good luck out there taf ,,,
Everyone in a truck ,car was a fresh pass so you will grow , everyone has had to learn , every think
Well said! I’m actually getting better every day.
Well done keep smiling 😊
Very nervous for ya ,well done
Wish you every success
We've all been there. If in doubt stop early and ask before you commit
Thank you!
lol I work for premier paper in Bristol that’s castle donington isn’t it mate 😊
This is the start of something special 👏
You should maybe record some pov (first person) driving
Thank you. I will definitely be uploading more content
Well done......
Thank you!
Good luck to you
Never did all all checks on unit also never checked load before leaving yard
That was not the point. I’m sure if you look at the title and duration of the video, you can agree with me that there’s no way my first day lasted just under 6mins. That video was just a summary of the day, not everything was recorded.
