    MAAAAAN, I hate to say it, but skipping over the GBA version like that is a HUGE disservice! Despite the smaller screen, it actually plays extremely well. You're the first person I've ever heard say it doesn't play well. I'm kinda surprised.

      I was just about to comment about this. To me it’s the best version of double dragon. New moves, mechanics (blocking , etc) and new weapons and enemies. Really challenging AI as well.

      I think this GBA was one of the best. Game Play and graphics...music.
      I definitely liked it more than Neon.
      Especially if you played it on PC with the emulators linked and played 2 player with one window full screen.

    What about Double Dragon Advance? I think that is a worthy mention. Great controls and nice arrangements of the classics. It also pays homage to some of the best aspects of the series including some classic enemies like the final boss from Double Dragon 2. Graphics are surprisingly good for such a small screen, too.

  • @alopexau
    @alopexau 8 лет назад +24

    Did you seriously just say the brilliant GBA remake has 'not so good gameplay'? It's a masterful expansion of the original gameplay, the squishy resolution doesn't hamper it at all. Did you not give it a proper go?
    I can agree that other than the unfair difficulty DD3 gets way too much flack, it's a good game overall, even if Bimmy and Jimmy stand like they're busting to go to the john, but DD Neon... I can't agree there. To me it looks and feels just awful, with ugly graphics, stiff, robotic animations, suspect collision detection and all the attempted 80's styling feeling forced and cringy.

    • @Syklonus
      @Syklonus 4 года назад

      I disagree. The small screen and washed out colours feel claustrophobic, and that stupid feature of having the enemy move back a few pixels every time they are punched is super annoying, becasue they always end up out of reach. A lot of good features in the game mind you, but it would have been better served on a proper console with a proper screen.

    My personal favourite in the series is Double Dragon Advance, I think it's the best mechanically the series has every been, without going too goofy like with Neon (though I do love that game also.)
    I'd love to see a new game in the series buy Reverge Labs, the guys behind Skullgirls, their gorgeous 2D art married with classic brawling gameplay would be bliss.

    This brings back so many happy memories for me! I remember my brother owning Double Dragon on the Gameboy. I had come so close to completing it and one Saturday Morning I asked to play on it. He agreed and I managed to get to the last stage, avoid those doors that suck you in and with beads of sweat pouring down my face I was somehow able to kill the shadow boss! I ran upstairs to show my brother and he couldn't have been happier! We even owned the master system version and I did play the second one again on Gameboy but could never complete it! An awesome video and I have subscribed to your channel! I am learning stuff about games that I never knew! Keep up the good work!

    This video brings back a lot of memories of my childhood. Me and my brother were huge fans of Double Dragon and spent loads of our dad's money on it at the arcade. A few years later we saw the commercial for Double Dragon 2 on the NES and were so excited because my brother was getting it for his birthday! It was one of our favorites on the NES along with Ninja Gaiden and Contra.

    Cool historical look at Double Dragon 😎....however it needs a new update because several new Double Dragon games & versions/remasters have come out since the end of this video, including a new Double Dragon IV in 2017 (which was programmed by former members of Technos & really feels like a proper sequel in my opinion) and there are several appearances of Double Dragon characters in other games such as WWF Superstars, River City Ransom (and it's sequels), Super Spike V'Ball, Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer & Abobo's Big Adventure....😁✌️

  • @RetrOrigin
    @RetrOrigin 8 лет назад +11

    Don't know why you showed Streets of Rage III when talking about dreaded 3rd games, to me that's the best in the series gameplay-wise and a lot of people hate it just because of the experimental computer generated music (which I actually preffer over the 1st 2 games music) I understand people liking the 1st 2 SoR games better for whatever reason but that doesn't make the 3rd one a bad game (specially if you play the Japanese version)
    The platforming sections in DDII are actually stupidly easy, I don't know why people have so much trouble pressing 2 buttons together to jump, the controls are quite responsive.
    I agree with you on DDIII for the NES, it's actually a great game. People hate it because it's hard.
    DD Neon on the other hand to me is one of the worst in the series, way too slow and completely hate upgrade/store system.
    DD Advance to me is the best in the series.

    Neon was reviewed badly when it came out, the reviews I saw anyway, but I absolutely loved it. The humor was right up my alley, even though the reviews labeled it as dumb and misogynistic. It was the first game since the N64 that a friend and I geeked out and played co-op mode all day a few times. We drank while we did so, which lowered our skill levels enough to make the game slightly difficult. Everything combined made the whole experience feel like I was a kid playing an NES again.

    Just got "Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones" on NES for my Birthday (yesterday). I'm glad you've got this episode... it's great to see the many different ports side-by-side, and in this case, "Double Dragon III" is a game that came out so late in the NES' life cycle in the USA that I *never* saw it for rent, for sale, or in any of my friend's collections.
    I'm guessing you read that kickass interview with the series creator on Polygon? I wish they'd do more articles like that... it was a fascinating way to blow off an hour at work one day for me. Not that it took an hour to read, but I *did* do a lot of supplementary tabbed browsing based on things featured in the text.

    1:20 I can so relate to that.
    My very first brawler was actually Double Dragon on the Gameboy. I loved it. Never got through the first boss, but I still liked the game.
    I have played the Atari 2600 version, which I found to be extremely hard.
    Next brawler, Double Dragon 2 on the NES. Man, that game has become one of my favorite brawlers.
    I despise the platforming in some versions though...
    I have discovered Streets of Rage years ago while searching for ROMS and this is still my favorite brawler of all time and one of my many favorite game series on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis.
    Your video's are superb man. You make quality content and explain everything so well with all the details.
    I can really hear you are very passionate about the games you talk about, especially the Sega Megadrive games.
    Even though I like the SNES a lot, the Sega Megadrive is my favorite console of all time too.
    Keep doing what you are doing, you make excellent content.

      @aced1972 7 лет назад +1

      Yep, I was a disappointed little boy when I got my NES copy... So much was changed, with such bad graphics and sound... And yeah, no simultaneous play - although they added that horribly-made alternative game built-in where characters would fight each other kind of like Street Fighter - likely a waste of memory they could have put back into the actual game.
      Oddly, I still played it for hours and hours and hours back then... I remember getting near the end and almost having a panic attack after pausing it and going to eat dinner, because all I could think about was passing the game ASAP and "what if I die and have to start over from scratch?" And yeah, I died shortly upon resuming play. Pretty sure I stayed up all night until I got it.
      Video games were definitely my first addiction/obsession, and I understand why my parents were always a bit skeptical about them (and I thought THEY were crazy for not understanding at the time)...

      Age 9 (1988) I was the area “poster child” for Muscular Dystrophy, in my wheelchair. One weeklong fundraiser at the mall had those who gave $1 a chance to choose an icecube to drop on a wok. Their would either be a real diamond or cubic zirconia inside. The last day I had a chance to try. It wasn’t rigged for me- but I got a diamond! I sold it off ASAP, bought a SEGA Master System and DOUBLE DRAGON! My brother and I played it all the time (2-player, baby!). That and Phantasy Star 1 are the 2 games we truly bonded over. It was all meant to happen as it did. Age 19 I discovered I was misdiagnosed, after spending ages 7-14 in a wheelchair. That was a mind-screw, as MD kills every single man with it, usually by age 35-40 down to toddlers. I knew I was going to die. Then “whoops- we were wrong. You never had Muscular Dystrophy.” But I still have my Master System and Double Dragon, and great memories with my brother.

    Jeeeeesus, DD NEon is your pick? DD Neon?!! That's like someone that loves a good burger saying McDonalds is the best. Puh-lease, are you for real?
    *sigh*
    Dude, you barely even mentioned the best one- the DD Gameboy Advance.
    I mean, it has the whole kit and caboodle, brilliant graphics that improve on the original and yet still stay true it, incredible soundtrack. It has EVERYTHING. Secret power moves, multiple routes aikido blocks, a variety of weapons, double tap run, almost every enemy featured in the DD series put into one game. Want more? Storyline, cutscenes, survivor mode...??? Difficulty choices? Frankly, you'd be hard-pushed to find a finer tribute to the original. It gives the fans everything they could dream of.
    Shit bro, I mean, no offence but you claim to be a guy that knows his beat-em ups, and you've not even mentioned some of the best scrolling beat em ups there is- Crimefighters, Aliens vs Predator, Dungeons and Dragons--for example.
    And I'll bet you've not even played the king of all beat em ups.
    SpikeOut.
    SpikeOut is THE best beat-em up game ever made. Not that Battle Street shite.The arcade original.
    ruclips.net/video/S89j2CnxP2I/видео.html
    It's still popular here in Japan, there are guys that can one coin it, and the skill required to do so is insane.
    OK, not meaning to rant. Love your channel. I do appreciate the work you put into your vids. I'll go watch the SORF one. And if you don't even mention the SORF Remake project and sing it's praises then I'll know for sure you have no ability to know good games.

    Finally got around to watching this one all the way through--incredible job, I see why it took so many hours for you to render this beast! Definitely learned a lot about the various ports of Double Dragon games...and now I know why I never really liked most of the games in the series, since Technos Japan wasn't involved with most. Again, great job man, and props for working in a clip of "Once Upon A Time in High School." Love that movie.

    Also, I suggest giving Double Dragon Advance on the GBA another chance, since it was mostly a brief footnote in this video. I found it to be extremely responsive once you've memorized the moveset and start doling out the beatings. It was truly a good remake of the first game.

    I'm in the minority who hates Double Dragon Neon. I played it when it was free on PS3 and I couldn't stand how the enemies can interrupt your combos, as a result I couldn't be arsed to grind the points necessary to proceed through it.

      You're not alone, man.
      Slow paced, excessively grindy, and visually unappealing, to me. Huge disappointment, back in the days it came out.
      And, related to the video (brilliant as always, Dan!): I get the 'number 3 syndrome' reference but... Bare Knuckle III? Really? It's a phenomenal game on the MD, in my opinion the most solid and advanced beat'em up on 16 bit consoles. US and PAL versions are stupidly censored, and that hurts the overall experience, but - even if I'm the first one totally understanding the love SoR2 usually gets over 1 and 3 - I'd pick up BKIII any time, if I had to chose my favourite entry in the whole trilogy.
      I also quite enjoy Golden Axe III, but yeah, I know i'm in a very small minority here. :D

      I'll admit, I'm american and I grew up on the NES versions without having played the arcade editions. However, I picked up the Double Dragon trilogy on Steam during their winter sale 6 months ago. It made perfect sense: I've always wanted to play the arcade originals and it was on sale, so I picked it up. After playing the original arcade ports, I was impressed and can't believe that I haven't played them before. Sure, I still go back and play the NES versions once in a while, but the arcade originals are superior and my absolute favorites.

    Super Double Dragon is seriously underrated. The game actually had choreography going on with its move sets and it even interacted with other characters. The music was kick-ass and the graphics where pretty good.
    I think this video could have given this game more attention. As the game itself was rushed into production: it was released unfinished. Marian was to become a cop among other things that deserved attention.

    I want to clarify something about the Arcade version of Double Dragon III that I'm not sure if anyone in the comments mentioned or not, but that game was actually developed by a Japanese company called East Technology (they made a few other games, including the strange Arcade shmup GIGANDES (which actually has some great music, which I highly recommend you check out on RUclips if you can find it)).

    The Double Dragon games for NES were a huge part of my childhood, and I still play them on a pretty regular basis now. I didn't know there was so much hate for The Sacred Stones, it's difficult but honestly one of the finest games for the NES. Great graphics, and a fantastic soundtrack. Double Dragon Neon is abysmal in that it took something that was very cool (along with Contra) and turned it into a goofy, tongue-in-cheek joke. We need a new DD that puts the bad assery back in the series and not a game that's completely self aware and depreciative.
