Hard Corps for Mega Drive is my favourite Contra game, and I didn't play any Contra games until I was a teenager!

As a kid in the 80’s i always wanted a contra movie w arnie and sly playing the two leads and a castlevania one w dolph lundgren playing simon belmont. I dunno, it just felt right at the time, lol

True, both Contra Mame and Haunted Castle looked and played horrible.
So they changed the name in countries that had nothing to do with the Iran-Contra affair but still released it under that name in the country that did. Because that makes sense.

Its cool that you covered everything on the franchise, though you definitely missed the fact that both Contra and Super Contra on the Arcades had a *Continue limit* (Even if you did put many credits, both games will not let you continue further than 5 times)...so yeah, its actually tougher than you'd think, even though they are shorter than the NES ports.

Shattered Soldier is awesome. It's definitely a "real" Contra imo. In the vein of Contra Hard Corps with the pace, challenge and boss insanity Treasure factor ratcheted up to 11. Fitting since Treasure came from Konami.

@@XeviousvSBlackmanta it was cool, the animation is great and I like 2.5D, reminded me of PS1 Strider, but I wasn't very good at it and I prefer the speedy movement of Shatter Soldier. It's backwards compatible on the Xbox One, I should replay it.

Jackal was hands-down my favorite game as a child. Super challenging with weapon upgrades, interesting game mechanics and weird scenery. Not to mention some whacky bosses.

Love the complete history of Contra! For those who may want more retro Contra games try out Super Cyborg and Blazing Chrome. You will feel at home with those games.
Its funny to me to not mention how for many, they believe the Konami Code ends with “select, start” because we would always play the first contra with our friends and is one of the best co-op games ever.

Contra 4 is incredible. One of my personal favorite DS games. Fun fact not mentioned in the video: you can unlock both Contra AND Super C (yes, the full games) through Contra 4's Challenge Mode. So really, you're getting 3 Contra games in one. I miss when Konami was awesome...
43:05 the biggest difference with Shattered Soldier is the weapons system being locked to Machine Gun, Flamethrower, Grenades only. Not sure why you didn’t mention this but it works because of the puzzle elements. Each boss has a weakness to a weapon, sometimes more than one. I loved this game and it needs a re-release. But, Konami is too busy Konami’ing. I did grab new contra mobile bc I’m a sucker. Great vid.

And what an amazing production! Lots of great,. thoroughly researched information. You definitely do some of the best game content around. But this series deserves the respect you gave it, and I really appreciated how you started as far back as you did, even mentioning Ikari Warriors and its contemporaries as inspiration for Contra.
As for the original game and Super Contra, it will always be the NES versions for me! I was always baffled at Konami's choice to use a vertical orientation in the arcade versions. And the only games in the series are Contra, Super C, Contra Hard Corps, Contra 4, and Hard Corps Uprising! I never could stand the boring, vertical levels in Contra III so that's the only 2D one in the series that I can't stand...

Super Contra arcade was the absolute BEST of entire series, across all sequels and platforms. Contra III for the SNES, in my opinion, is just a HAIR beneath it but nothing else comes close

That last quote from the Contra guys at the end, about how in order to justify making a 2D game, he would have to think of some sort of brand new 2D innovation in order to make another "classic" Contra game, that's crazy. No, release an amazing, 2D, PIXEL based Contra game with all the frantic gameplay we love, but also incredible sprite work and level design. Do that, and the innovations will come.
I doubt Yacht Club Games knew that Shovel Knight would end up playing how it does with all it's little gimmicks we love. It feels like they said we love Mega Man and Ducktales, let's start building a game combining what makes those 2 games so fun. And then the ideas probably just started flying.
It's literally so much harder to find a new 3D platformer these days than a new 2D one, so many creative people can help make new Contras and Castlevanias, with new ideas, just do it!!
There's a underrated run and gun game called "One" for the PS1 and that easily could been a proper 3d Contra game. Very cool controls and chaos everywhere starting from the beginning.
I loved the video and agree with your opinions 100% . Thank you for taking the time to make this . I DO hope for a really good Contra game in the future , but I am not holding my breath . The most fun I had with the seri6is with the original entry with my older brother on my NES back in the 80's when we played for hours , took an hour or so break , and booted it up again .

I adored Contra and can still finish it with 1 credit, loved Super Contra too (You didn't mention you can double the guns power by picking them up twice in Super Contra) but I didn't play any of the other games. Did have GryZor on my Amstrad CPC too.

Shattered Soldier on PS2 was definitely my favourite Contra of all time, followed by Alien Wars and then the original on NES.

I'm glad you pointed out that both characters one the original NES case are based on Arnold Schwarzenegger. I see a lot of people claim the one on the right is Sylvester Stallone.
There actually is only a very few who are aware of the misconception. Sadly most still go with it being Stallone. However, it's only the poses based on Arnold from Predator. The faces are modeled after other characters; Lance being possibly Billy (Sonny Landham) from Predator.

So I just learned Probotector was a thing, it's CRAZY I've never heard this was a thing.
The first time I heard about Probotector was during my misspent youth when I downloaded a massive ROM pack from ... a site that features sailors of the seven seas. I saw the title and thought, "What the hell kind of game is that?", booted it to my emulator and was even more confused.
It wasn't until years later when I learned why it was changed, but yea, it's a bit of a shock learning about it the first time if you only grew up with Contra.
@@Dargonhuman I'm going to find a ROM of it, but I have to say, I think I like Probotector's palette swap aesthetics more than vanilla Contra.
@@spladam3845 In that case you absolutely should; literally the only difference between the two are the sprite art, so if you feel like the robots are better to the humans, go for it and have a blast.

I like how Ibbertson says Contra: Hard Corps is the black sheep of the franchise and wasn’t as good as Super Contra for the SNES. Yet, he sure uses a lot of musical clips from it throughout this post.

I look forward to your complete history on the Rocket Knight series. That series is to me what Streets of Rage is to you. It's a game I'm surprised hasn't had an indie spiritual successor yet like The Messenger did with Ninja Gaiden or Stardew Valley did with Harvest Moon.

At the time, I never knew gryzor and contra were the same game in the 80's... I only realised this in the early 90's with the release of super contra on the snes. Pretty epic video man. Kudos

The music and design was excellent for its time. I use the soundtrack on the treadmill. Contra SC and Shattered Soldier and Neo Contra are the most A+ run and gun games in the world.
Honestly, Gears of War is probably the model they should've followed when trying to make a modern Contra title. Balls to the wall co-op shooting action starring muscle bros with 80s bandanas fighting an alien war, with the random vehicle stage and tons of explosions and run down cities.
I loved contra for NES, was a child at that time, and while i would always look for this for sale at retailers or maybe even catalogue, *yup* and could never find it, BUT most video stores rented it, and it was always my go to choice,
That Rogue Corps advert gave me goosebumps!
