doh! dude, you dropped a big clanger on this one. you forgot the "beast select" cheat which allowed you to choose on each stage which beast you wanted to be. this made the megadrive version easily the best. hold A + B + C + down left on the title and press start. This cheat makes the lastability of the game so much longer.

I've always held firm to the idea that _'Altered Beast'_ and _'Golden Axe'_ share the same universe. since the _"Cockatrice"_ is used in both games. As a mount in _'Golden Axe'_ and an enemy in _'Altered Beast'._

Yes. ''Golden Axe'' is before ''Altered Beast'' in this chronology. In concept, many Sega games share the same universe: ''Golden Axe''; ''Altered Beast''; ''Shinobi''; ''Phantasy Star''; ''Aliens Storm''; ''Echo - the Dolphin''; ''Shining in the Darkness''. The hidden enemy in this universe is the Dark Force\Darkness\Shadow force, sealed in the star of ''Alghoul''. But, in solar system of Alghoul and the our solar system, this evil force send influences and many creatures to broke this seal. etc.

It’s funny how the Greek mythologicy story of “The Rape of Persephone” was lost in translation. What was initially a story of how Hades, lord of the Underworld, stole away Persephone (daughter of Ceres - the goddess of agriculture and plants), turned into Zeus reviving a nameless fallen hero to venture into the Underworld and rescue Athena from someone named “Neff.”
Still, one of my favourites from the 1980s arcades.

    • @JAGUARHX
      @JAGUARHX 5 лет назад +9

In the original, this fallen hero is based in a legend: The greek boxer (from same land of Licaon King) transformed in a werewolf (during 7 years) by Zeus because a pact.
In japanese version, this Nameless Hero have a codiname: ''Juuoki'' - something like ''Beast king'' or ''King of Beasts''. Changed to ''Altered Beast'' in american market: censured.
Your theriantropy power is based in the latin and greek legends and folklore: Europe and South America's ''werewolves'' can transform in anothers animal\humans hybrids too, like horses, hounds, goats, pigs, wolves, jaguars, monkeys, etc.
Sorry my poor english: I'am brazilian. ;)

@Darth Wheezius It's telling that, besides the Sonic series, the best Genesis games were cross-ported to the SNES, and they often looked, sounded and ran better on the competition's hardware. Hell, even the 16 bit Sonic games were kinda ehh for the most part, though that was mostly due to them making a character whose central mechanic is speed then designing the levels to stop him every couple of screens.

Altered Beast is one of my favorite classics but mostly due to the nostalgia. There was this small arcade near my school called 'The Jungle' (I think it was based off of the Guns'n'Roses song that I think came out that year) that just opened up and they had Altered Beast among others. Me and my friends Mike, Shawn, Devon and David played the living hell out of that game. I want to say this was around the time Street Fighter 2 was released but maybe that came a year or so later. I ended up getting a Sega Genesis and everyone was staying the night at my house to to play AB among other games. Eventually I ended up adding more games to my collection and me and my friends just went nuts over them. Revenge Of Shinobi, Phantasy Star 2, Strider, Truxton, Golden Axe, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Super Hang-On... and I had more but I can't remember. I ended up working as a delivery boy for our local meat market riding my bike to drop off orders for the elderly on my bicycle. Got paid $3.50 an hour which wasn't bad for a 12 year old back in the late 80's. Most of it went to Sega games and stuff for my Commodore 64. But I always saved some for the local skating rink which was a big deal in my area back then.

Mate, a "Hack & Slash" or even a "Warrior" _Altered Beast_ game could be amazing if given to the right people and with the proper development time. Just because the PS2 version suck doesn't mean that the concept itself should die in a fire. It failed in its execution not its concept, IMHO. Just saying.

Instead of having pressure sensitive buttons, why didn't he just make it where you did a strong attack by holding down a direction while attacking? Or pressing 2 buttons at once? There are so many ways to add extra moves to simple controls, IDK why he thought it would be a good idea for games back then.

Still to this day, decades after playing it for the first time, I can still hear "power up" and "rise from your grave" as clear as day! It's definitely been imprinted in my mind for the rest of time!
That game wasn't the greatest my any means but it definitely left it's mark and is just simply unforgettable.
The storyline and style was just so unique and unlike anything else at the time, like something a kid would come up with if asked for ideas for a game and I mean that in the best possible way. A huge muscle bound hero that can transform into a bigger, stronger animal form to beat up evil monsters, who wouldn't want to play that...?

Sparked so many memories of my childhood... I never could be pulled away from this game. I even played it (with tears in my eyes) on the end of a table full of all my old toys and other items (crap) at a carboot sale. I was finally selling my Megadrive and a modest collection of games. Modest due to me and my friends using games as gambling chips while playing games or as curency in real life 🤣 I sobbed when I had to pack it up and hand my soul over to some guy for a fraction of what it was worth to me. I even tried to hide altered beast as it was my favourite.
It was an awesome game, as soon as I pressed play on the video I got a shiver down my spine and hairs were on end.

I remember discovering the Altered Beast arcade game back when my mom and some friends went to Nickel City. And if any of you guys remember Nickel City, then your childhood was awesome. Anyway, out of all the games in Nickel City that caught my eye, besides Kingdom of Dragons, Altered Beast was the one that really got my curiosity. That game was just sitting there, practically yelling my name. I put a couple nickels in that beast, and had a blast. What really sold me was, of course, the theme and transformations. I never got to finish it because I ran out of nickels and we were about to leave. The next time I went there with a friend, I played Altered Beast again, but for a little longer this time. Sadly, like before, I didn’t get to finish the game. Then the next time I got there, sadly, the cabinet was no longer there. Though they still had Kingdom of Dragons. Which was the game I played the most there. All I had to play was the Genesis port, which wasn’t bad, but I missed the bright colors, the smooth graph and animation, the better music, the unlimited continues, and of course, that epic as Hell ending. But now that I have Xbox Live and my Xbox One, I can play the arcade once again, and feel like a kid at Nickel City, again. Ahhhh memories...😌

I remember back in 1992 being 12 years old and walking into a mall arcade (for those reading who are too young to know what an arcade is, just watch Wreck it Ralph) where I found this gem known as Altered Beast. I spent a ton of quarters on the damn thing and never beat it until it was released for the Sega Genesis.

    WISE FWOM YOUR GWAVE!
I remember the one thing I actually enjoyed about the PS2 game was the transformation sequences. They genuinely made them look horrifying in the best possible way. The game itself wasn't great, but those have stuck with me for nearly 15 years now.
Also I was wondering if you were gonna acknowledge their recent addition in Sega Heroes, and you did, so Yay! Great work, dude!

The first time I ever played "Altered Beast" was actually just a few months ago with "Sega Classics Collection" on my brother's Switch. I didn't enjoy it very much until I looked up the instruction manual online to find out how the game's weird mechanics work, and even then it's only a decent game at best. It's an important title for Sega's history, though.

For those of us across the pond, I never had an amiga (not until recently and i love it) I had the Genesis Copy as my exposure to the game and for better or worse, it's nto a great game, but it's a great afternoon time killer when I'm bored out of my skull.

A really good game. It has a big following, a couple of years ago I was at Dragon Con and a guy dressed as a Zesu saying rise from your grave.

Always had a soft spot for this game. The PS2 revamp also.
Big horror fan, especially werewolves. So it's theme is right up my alley.

The only arcade game I learned how to beat on one quarter. I got it on my Xbox One; however, whatever enabled me to do well in the arcade is lost today. I do not know if it is the fact it is not the arcade version in emulation or my age. Altered Beast and Golden Axe are in the same universe. I hope that, that fact is someday utilized to great effect in video games and maybe even for movies or a series.

This game made headlines because it showcased the Genesis' ability to reproduce an arcade game on a home system. If you go back through the media hype and magazine stories, that's the one common factor you'll see and the one all the kids (self include) kept talking about!

Not a game I would play over Golden Axe or Alien Storm but it's not bad to boot up every once in a while.

I still remember this and golden axe arriving together in the arcade I used to frequent as a kid. There was nothing else that looked anywhere near as good in there. I was completely blown away until robocop and midnight resistance showed up

US gamer here. I remember reading about the PS2 Altered Beast in Magazines, and thought it was pretty cool for them to be making another Altered Beast game. It's release was never announced eventually fading into obscurity. I never tried it until I modded my PS2. It supports 60 as well as 50 thought it is 50 by default. I found the game to be rather subpar past the transformation scenes. Those look pretty good every time. What hurt the game the most, for me, was the lack of a lock on feature. If it had one like Devil May Cry, I would have probably played the game through. I had enough with the water stage. Your mobility vs the enemies felt too limited, and the underwater parts just made things slower.

I got my copy of Altered Beast on Christmas Eve of 1989 with my Sega Genesis. While I loved it and the graphics blew my mind, I also received Space Harrier 2 and Ghouls n' Ghosts. I played Ghouls n' Ghosts like there woukd be no tomorrow.

Played it first on the Amstrad too, it was a copy bought from a carboot and only loaded once! As a little lad I decided to write to Activision to complain (no idea!)....they actually wrote back saying sorry they couldnt help as bought 2nd hand but hopefully a load of posters, badges, stickers etc they packed in would cheer me up. Fair play!
