I'm old enough to remember the arcade version coming out. For 1985, the graphics and sound on that machine blew me away. It took almost 8 years and several generations of home ports to finally get it right when the 32X and Saturn version came out. That arcade machine was way ahead of it's time.

5:20 This is incorrect, Sega was one of the pioneers of sprite scaling technology in 1981 with Turbo which used a bank of 8 voltage controlled oscillators to control how quickly graphics in the object rom were read out as the CRT scanned the image onto the screen. The VCOs generated clock pulses that read the object out of ROM, changing the frequency of the VCOs changed how long it took to draw the object. It raced the beam as they were read out so changing how fast it was read from the object ROM changed how much of the scanline was used to display each line of the sprite. In effect this was analog scaling, it was a hardware trick that didn't require complex maths to change the size of a bitmap, but it worked well enough. The same technology was later used for Buck Rogers and Subroc. Subroc also used LCD shutter glasses based 3D using a periscope that the player looked through at the screenwhile playing the game and this was back in 1983. So saying Sega wasn't into 3D before Yu Suzuki came along is patently false, they were the industry leader in 3D arcade games even before then.

There was a secret message in the Sega Master system port of Space Harrier. It only appeared if you put the initials ERI in all the high score rankings. A message would appear that said to mail your thoughts on this game to Sega Japan and it gave an address. The first 10 people to write in would get a response. It also asked "Can you see why you can find this message?". I've always wondered what ERI means and if anyone actually wrote in.

No mention of the Yakuza 0 port? I'm surprised!
Gotta agree though that the game holds up today because the first time I played it was in 2017 when I gave it a go in Yakuza 0. Played a little bit, then found out there was a point score task I needed to accomplish and worked to be better at it...and before I knew it, I was enjoying the game for what it was, not just as a way to earn stuff in Yakuza 0.
So yeah, it's good even without nostalgia goggles.

its kind of ironic how sega named one of the bosses in the master system version of the game after the man who essentially ruined sega, nakayama discontinued the mega drive early , dismissed sony's idea to collaborate on a game system and ignore the ideas of sega of america as well as authorise the early launch of the saturn in the west which damaged the saturn and caused a domino effect that led to the saturn being discontinued and fail with the dreamcast, it is all his fault and who knows where sega would have been if he was not in charge.

That Space Harrier arcade machine with the big chair on it (at least I think it was that one - was a long time ago). When I was growing up, the local leisure center had one and I kept looking forward to being able to play it again. Good memories. I never played on many arcade machines but that was one of them.

  • @chamchamtrigger

Space Harrier is the first ever game I remember playing. Sitting in that arcade cabinet is one of my favorite childhood memories. The first time I was able to get to stage 4, my jaw dropped as the ceiling came down and the game sped up. Hearing him say "you're doing great" at the start of stage 2 still keeps me excited about playing the game. I even bought a (admittedly clearance sale price) 32X just to play it at home as soon as I was able to afford it. Even playing it at home no matter the port (post 32X) doesn't diminish the experience for me.
This game is definitely in my top 10 games of all time. Simple concept. Great music. Great music. I say it's the perfect game for me. Part 2 is alright, but I just love the first game much more. I was lucky enough to play Planet Harriers and that is another great game, though not as much of a pick up and play style game.
EDIT: And yeah the 3DS and PS2 recommendations are pretty much spot on.

This is available at Bury arcade club, always fun to play it, great to also see youngsters playing this and having a blast and bare in my these are kids brought up on Call of Duty and FIFA, just goes to show how well Space Harrier has studied the test of time. for those that have the most recent (as of this posting) sega collections, its emulator has a great quick rewind function. If you just want to have a chill time Space Harrier II is actually great fun since you can easily undo the cheap ass arcady deaths it throws at you like spawning enemy shots right on top of you before you can react since the hardware couldn't properly handle everything on screen. beat the game in about 40 minutes and just have some nice cathartic fun while still getting a good rush. The challenge comes in seeing how long you can go before needing to trigger the rewind.

Space Harrier is an excellent candidate for a proper, modern VR entry (hopefully available to play in both the classic 3rd-person, as well as the better for VR first-person, perspectives). It would also be interesting to have two primary modes (similar to Star Fox 64) in a rails experience as well as an "all-range" style.

I had Space Harrier 3D on the Master System, along with the 3D glasses. And it was incredibly slow and choppy when compared to the original version on the same system. I was hopping to get a remake of that version of the game. It would be cool if We got a hacked 32X version that replaced all the sprites and music to look like the 3D Master System game. considering that the sprites don't animate, only scale. It should be a simple hack. I need to learn how to do it myself, But where do i start.

  • @BainesMkII

I've said it before, but as much as you like to plug the Megadrive Classics Collection, I can only hope that the PX4/XboxOne versions have better emulation than the PC version. The PC version's emulation was always slightly inferior to the better freeware alternatives while the virtual room was a pointless performance hog, but the update released to match the PS4/XboxOne release has apparently created new issues (at least some of which have since been addressed) and drawn new complaints.

    • @videogameobsession
      @videogameobsession 6 лет назад +1

      They are no better.
Both the PS4 and Xbox One ports of this collection have major audio bugs, occasional stuttering video, and 4-5 frames of input lag. Enough to mess up your double jumps in Revenge of Shinobi, and make it hard to get hits off first in Golden Axe 1-3, and Streets of Rage 1-3.
Why Sega didn't have M2 work on this game is strange.

I would not say this series has held up, but a proper sequel would be nice. The ending of Space Harrier 2 was really a sequel bait, after all.
I first encountered Space Harrier via the DS Sega All-Stars Tennis in the minigame segment, and it was what I played most of that thing. I eventually tracked down a copy of Space Harrier 2 for the genesis/mega drive when I got one years back because I wanted to play the real thing, and wasn't really disappointed. It's really nice that the game has a built-in autofire feature, so I don't have to mash the button so much.

Daniel, I am afraid the Famicom was released BEFORE the SG-1000. So I think it is debatable whether the Mark III was Sega's first rival to the Famicom.

Would be interesting to see a port/remaster of planet harriers some day

Excellent video as always Dan. Sadly (or happily, depending on how you look at it) I first experienced Space Harrier in the full hydrolic arcade machine, so I always found home ports somewhat of a less exciting experience, and they felt very watered down. I did buy it on 32X though and had a lot of fun with it. Both that and Afterburner II were brilliant on 32X, its a crying shame they never released Outrun - that would have been a system seller imo. Oh, and yeah the music is friggin awesome, as was true on all the super scaler games.

Space harrier 3d on the master system was fantastic but grossly underplayed. The glasses were not necessary as you could turn off 3d mode. It takes a close 2nd to the original. Bosses and planets were really cool. This is the true sequel

the Sega Ages version may have looked bland, but the soundtrack was *AMAZING*
