I was fortunate to star playing PC games in the mid-90s, and it was all super exciting like everything is to a 12 year old. Sadly, I was still too young to really grasp what massive changes where happening just before my eyes, with revolutionary games coming out every other month.
I think that they changes were so rapid, that most of us missed them. Also, people rarely do, unless they're something dramatic, like war or whatever. xD
Cool cool :) Enjoy! I add the codes whenever I can as a small "thank you" to my viewers. Wish I had more to share, as all of you deserve them, well most of you, he he, but it is what it is. :)
I'm impressed the C64 could handle physics calculations for a F1 game AND run at a pretty smooth rate. I think I give too little credit to the machine that plays games with Monty the mole.
Glad that you plan a follow up video because I was about to stay where is Master of Orion for the Space 4x genre that every keeps trying to recreate :) Also, Heroes of Might and Magic truly defined the Fantasy Turn Based Strategy game more so than Master of Magic. Lot of great games on the list. I was huge fan of Microprose's Gunship & F-19 Stealth Fighter which probably came after F-15.
These are both excellent ideas, and I'll try to have at least one of them in the follow-up to the follow-up, cause I kinda locked the list of the genres for the follow-up already. :P I mean, the next video, the one that will drop tomorrow, will be something completely else, but the next of these should be right after. Thursday-ish, I think... ;) And yeah, Gunship & F-19 came a bit after, also stellar games! :)
Despite being fully 3d, Quake didnt invent anything new, it was Wolf that created the genre of FPS. Quake wasnt even the first one in 3d, descent came much earlier Alone in the Dark was the first survival horror, Resident Evil added nothing new to the genre besides graphics. Alone in the Dark sales are 2.5 m, while Resident Evil sales are 2,7. So saying that REpopularized the genre is wrong, the sales are equal. And AinD was pretty scary too in 1992. If you play it in 2024 then yes, its not scary at all Souls like is not a genre, its an ordinary slasher or third person action. There were plenty of these games in 90s/early 2000s like Severance: blade of darkness or Ninja Gaiden (xbox) and the games were ALWAYS difficult back then, so there's nothing new in "soul like games"
@@Str0b0 i would say even more, what's so surviving in this genre? Any game was surviving back then, especially on 8 and 16 bit machines, when you die in 1 hit, or just have 3 lives with no continues. I can easily finish any Resident Evil game with plenty of ammo left, hundrends of bullets. I see nothing survivng in this genre at all, at least not more than in other games.
Interesting idea. 🥓 I've obviously heard of how Maniac Mansion, King's Quest, Dune 2 and Quake defined their respective genres, so I did anticipate some of the games you mentioned. But it was fun to see the others too. As for puzzle games, there are so many types of puzzles, that I think it's not easy to find just one game that defined the genre. So Tetris is a good pick. :) Yes, let's send it to space, maybe the aliens will have some fun playing it too :D One thing did bother me though and it's that comment you mentioned that people who think Souls-like games are hard are bad gamers. I don't subscribe to that opinion at all. We're all different kinds of gamers, good at different genres, just like you said.
We can all be good at something, that's what I believe in, but objectively speaking Asmongold may have been right, these games are not difficult, they're demanding. They call for repetition and forming muscle-memory connections. And whether we are capable (for whatever the reason) of providing them attention and repeating something plenty enough times to master it or not, it's on us. So technically, he's right. A difficult game is a game that requires you to really gauge a lot of variables before taking actions. Some RTSes are difficult, to a certain degree Civilization can be difficult on the highest level, partly because CPU cheats, and partly because there are A LOT of these fore mentioned variables at play, and a shooter can be difficult, an online one I mean, as you're facing other people who are known to act spontaneously, improvise and generally speaking are unpredictable. There's probably more games, but it's later and I just wanted to make a point. Naturally, we do not have to agree. :)
@OldAndNewVideoGames I do agree that something that just takes memorisation and practice isn't difficult. It's the "bad gamer" apelative that I don't agree with. For one, it's a bit insulting. For two, I don't think it's correct. I like to use my noggin, but hate memorisation with the passion of a cordless phone that's out of range and there were some subjects in school that required only that. Inventing Zanzagreb certainly didn't make me a bad student. :D
@@TeaAndFloppyDisks i agree, the only bad gamer is the one who gatekeeps or the one who trolls. I find the souls games mind numbingly repetitive. I might, therefore, "suck" at souls games, but give me a game where i have to actually THINK rather than just REMEMBER.......
I slightly disagree with Quake over Doom. Quake defined the 3D FPS shooter genre, but Doom defined the FPS genre as a whole. While Catacomb and Wolfenstein 3D were great, they didn't hit as hard as Doom with fast-paced smooth play. Asmongold is an idiot. People don't suck at gaming because they suck at Dark Souls, they just don't have the patience for GetGud games like that. I have thousands of games that I want to play through in my life, I don't have time to spend 20 minutes dodging to get 2 hits in just to kill one enemy. That's not fun to me. I'd rather have fun playing games than doing something to constantly challenge my patience.
I've close to 4000 games too, and I've seen maybe a quarter of them. I get not having time. And "seen" does not equal to "given them at least 30 minutes", cause then I'd say that I've played them. :P Doom was my first choice, but given "where" the genre went I decided on Quake. In reality, both are excellent choices, and I could've easily given them a co-spot. Kinda like gave one to "Capcom" and not a game. :)
Glad you included flight sim genre and I agree thst Sid's F-15 defined the genre. Now more than 35 years later I did a new combat flight sim for to push this genre (at least on 8bit Atari ;) ) further with free release of my F-16 Falcon Strike, there are some YT videos about it and a dedicated webpage. :)
Well calling Herzog Zwei an RTS is playing fast and loose with the term, and if you go that way, I (and many others) would argue that the first one was Utopia for the Intellivision, which was a million times closer to what we call RTS nowadays than Zwei could ever dream of. It had base building, farm building, schools, hospitals, fishing fleets, navy fleets to protect said fishing fleets etc... you could sabotage your enemy, even had natural disasters in there...

My mates & me played sooooo much Street Fighter II on the SNES back in the day, it was huge at the time & really did define arcade 1 vs. 1 fighters from then on. Without doubt Tomb Raider defined it’s genre when it released, especially on the original Play Station, where it took the console to new heights & you could argue it changed console gaming forever too. Yeh Super Mario Brothers felt so fast & smooth compared to what came before. I mean I have Quake installed on my gaming PC in heavily modded & unmolested forms right now. Yes! Maniac Mansion was absolutely a turning point thanks to the use of these newfangled mouse devices. Don’t know if you’ve heard of it? 😄 Yep, Gears of War was fantastic, especially playing 2 player with my ex. Little Computer People is a little known (these days) game that was, to me, more interesting than The Sims. Dark Souls is not for me but the fact that we have the term “Souls Like” shows how it really did change everything. Yes, GTA 3 is where both the GTA series & it’s genera to new heights. Is it wrong that I don’t care about Guitar Hero? 😄 Tetris is so much fun, it’s still around now but it really hit it’s stride on the original Game Boy where it was a pack in title that was so very welcome. Resident Evil was amazing in it’s day. As clunky as the controls are now at the time it looked, felt & plaid like nothing before. & it included some hilarious dialogue. Yes, Outrun was absolutely pivotal for it’s genre & was one of the biggest games of it’s day, not just in it’s genre but of all time. I was going to argue that Jumping Flash rivals Super Mario 64 for the genre but Jumping Flash is actually considered a first person shooter. Also Mario 64 introduced console gamers to the analogue stick. Oh this one’s going to be contentious. The thing is Checkered Flag was so impressive for the hardware it ran on that it made people want newer & more impressive racing sims. I humbly disagree on that one & I will die on this Checkered Flag hill. 😄 Yes! frontier was incredible! Even if it was a bit much for the hardware around when it launched. Yeh I see your point about Capcom. Wow you packed a lot of games in to half an hour. I feel like you may have robbed yourself of 2 - 3 episodes with this list had you spread them out? Still you got your point across with an interesting video, can’t wait for the next one, thanks!
Oh, I so envy you. Back then, when it was still recent, all I could play SF2 on was Amiga, and then PC, and we all know how "great" these ports were. I mean, arguably the Super Street Fighter II The New Challengers (and this one alone, not the "Turbo" version of it) was really damn good on the Ami, but the rest sucked. I mean, I've played worst games, but they were just very disappointing. If not for Tomb Raider there'd be no Uncharted, no The Last of Us or no God of War games. Also no new Tomb Raiders which are just amazing! So yeah, it was indispensable for the gaming to become what it is today. Little Computer People is one of those games that should not be possible on C64 it originated on. It even had rudimentary AI, which back then was usually, like, dedicated just for the enemy ships to know how to track your ship, or Gauntlet mobs to go straight for you minding no obstacles on their way. ;) It's not wrong to not care about Guitar Hero, I'd like to remind you that I don't care for Tony Hawks games and very little for most RTSes. We're grown ups, we can do whatever the **** we want. ;) Oh yes! Japanese games had some of the cringest dialogues in all gaming! I mean, you would often wonder if the characters really meant what they said? Was it an issue with the translation? Or did you lost yourself in the story and don't understand the reference? And most of the time, it was Japanese cringe dialogues. xD Agreed. Tetris on GameBoy was absolutely a system seller. And quite literally as it was included. At least here it was. I kinda felt that you may wanna defend the Speccy, and I get that. Also why I picked Revs, cause I'm a Commodore-guy. Well, and arguably Revs was a better game, I mean Geoff Crammond made it, so you know... He's a legend. Perhaps one for a very small subset of gamers, but he IS! :) You can't always go for as many videos as you possible, sometimes it's better to pack them in, so that they would do the punching! Also, I've a follow-up in the works now, and it should hopefully be available for you on Wednesday, and a day later here, and I'm already compiling a list of subgenres for a potential third video too. I don't think I may be able to make four of these, but since my viewers keep dropping a lot of ideas in the comments - it's actually possible. Unlikely, but possible. :)
@ Resident Evil managed to marry a perfect mix of bad dialogue & *bad* acting & it was wonderful! 😂 I actually do think you’re right about it being a translation issue?
Many great games, but the one that stands out for me is SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000. I wish I could tell you how many hours I've spent on those two titles. Probably thousands upon thousands of hours. SimCity 3000 is also one I do like a bit more than the first two, and is the last great title in the series. One that came later tried to do too much and became more of a chore to play.
Alone in the Dark wasn't legitimately scary? I recall turning off my computer mid-game, because the pressure was too much. In my defense, I was 9 or 10 at the time ;)
I don't think dark souls is a difficult game, it just needs some time and patience to understand it. I'm not trying to be condescending either with this.
The fact we got countless of doom clones, gear of war clones, dark souls clones and only 2 tomb raider clones, that indiana jones game and maybe soul reaver is criminal, then again its easy to make dark souls games and hard to make a tomb raider game. Also i dissagree with asmongold, souls like games are terrible because they have terrible graphics (1 and 2) terrible controls, no story, stupid grindy upgrade system, delayed clunky animations and the enemies dont fight with the same rules and also cheap deaths. The last few parts became more apparent with the elden ring dlc that it has so many anime bosses that do 100 combo attacks like dante from dmc while you are extremely slow and in order to defeat them you have to find the hidden items in the map. This is the part that i also bash ubisoft and how they turned every game into a open world collecthathon of items to gather to upgrade. They turned dark souls into open world game as well. To me out of all of those games sekiro is the best because its not grindy and it relies more on counter attacks instead of stupid role dodges with invincibility frame animations that you have to dodge into an enemy attack, which means you gonna get sliced, but you wont because of the invincibility frames, meanwhile dodging backwards means you have to run back to where you were so you can attack the enemy again. Yeah i admit i dont like medieval fantasy, i dont like grindy rpgs, i dont like survival games, no story, i dont like consoles, i NEVER play with a gamepad and dark souls is made for thumbstick, from movement to the stupid move and jump attack and kick combos that are impossible to pull off with a keyboard and i also dont like diablo because it turned rpgs from story focused games with good characters to repettive action games with endless grinding, guess what, dark souls did the same thing but you cant turn your brain off and play like diablo, you have to be careful and play slowly and spend so much time that i feel its better spent on another more fulfilling game. I have yet to finish any diablo like rpg apart form the first one, they are just too boring and i push myself to finish the first one. To me fallout fixed rpgs and diablo and dark souls ruined it, every game now is either a dark souls clone or a borderlands looter shooter clone inspired by diablo. Yawn. Every year there are like 4 plus dark souls like games released, do people play all of those? Cant wait for these fads to end along with coop shooters and "games as a service". I remember jim sterling nearly ten years ago that bloodborne brought survival horror back, if only, there is nothing scare about it, its another souls clone, if someone made a victorian werewolf survival horror game that silver bullets actually worked against werewolves and were a rare resource and you had to explore a hub world city and solve puzzles, i would love that, but nope, another souls game. Gloomwood is better than bloodborne, there i said it.
WOW! That's a long and well worded comment. I agree with a lot of what you said, and don't with the parts of it too. Like Diablo-like games being shit, I think there's a market for them, and I like some of them too. POE (trying out POE2 on a down-low too) or Grim Dawn. But, and that's probably the most important thing about it, given how you express yourself, I think I am right assuming that despite these small differences we can both be respectful of each others opinions unlike some (ehm, MOST!) of League of Legends players. :) Also, you said Fallout saved the RPG genre so with that sentence alone you're GOATed in my mind, cause Fallouts (apart from 4
Alone in the Dark is a masterpiece, ruined by its sequels. The second and third episodes were ridiculous compared with the first. Not to speak of the latter games that killed it definitely. Only the one made by Raynal was really inspired. Same happened to Bio Hazard.
Kumam.

You can't always go for as many videos as you possible, sometimes it's better to pack them in, so that they would do the punching!
I actually do think you’re right about it being a translation issue?
You mentioned in the last video that you know MtG; do you still play (Commander possibly?)?
Nah, not for a while. :(
Many great games, but the one that stands out for me is SimCity Classic and SimCity 2000. I wish I could tell you how many hours I've spent on those two titles. Probably thousands upon thousands of hours. SimCity 3000 is also one I do like a bit more than the first two, and is the last great title in the series. One that came later tried to do too much and became more of a chore to play.
Got any of them immersive sims in that list?
Define immersive sim?
@OldAndNewVideoGames thief's, deus ex's, -shock or other 0451 games.
Also, if there is a game close to 10/10 it's frontier
Oh, yes! I can't even tell you how many hours I've played it for. It's something obscene...
Alone in the Dark wasn't legitimately scary? I recall turning off my computer mid-game, because the pressure was too much. In my defense, I was 9 or 10 at the time ;)
:)
8:27 Is that Residen Evil's Wesker?
:) Also, you said Fallout saved the RPG genre so with that sentence alone you're GOATed in my mind, cause Fallouts (apart from 4
Horrendously low scores for quake and especially doom!
They kinda are.
Alone in the Dark is a masterpiece, ruined by its sequels. The second and third episodes were ridiculous compared with the first. Not to speak of the latter games that killed it definitely. Only the one made by Raynal was really inspired. Same happened to Bio Hazard.
Od GTA 3 wolalem Urban Chaos.
Kumam.
Tetris *1985
asmongold mentioned, video closed.
GTA
Hell, yeah
:)
@@OldAndNewVideoGames great video
Where is diablo?
Gauntlet you say?
In the follow-up that's in the works. ;)
Gauntlet will be in the next video... In one capacity or another. ;)
