I never understood why Daniel was considered a coward. From what we see he's courageously charging at the front of the army, exposing himself to the most danger. It's not his fault that he got super unlucky and an arrow slipped past his helmet's slit.
Apparently, there is an official online comic (published around the time the PS4 remake was released) that explain that it was because Fortesque lied to the king of Gallownere by pretending he was a strong knight while he wasn't. He also didn't expected a war to break out so he was "secure" about her cover. But when Zarok raised his army of dark forces, the king basically told Fortesque to lead the charge against the sorcerer. The "knight" wasn't that good but he still went to the battlefield... Only to die to the first arrow landing in his eye. The rest is pretty much what Pap tell at the beginning and only the gargoyles and the Heroes know the truth.

i grew up playing this game with my dad since i was 7, BEST memories ever. this game is one of my special interests, so i’ve watched this video literally at least 12 times because it’s SO fascinating how ppl figure out how to speed run this game :)
I feel old af now! Almost ten years since seeing my first run of this game. You made me remember so many moments of this game's history, it's crazy. Well done, edit was on point, amount of information perfect and well explained. A huge thanks for your work, from a big fan of this game and this speedrun.
I am not kidding. For whatever reason the game freaked me out so much during my childhood, that I was never ever able to walk through dark hallways in my mom's house normally again for YEARS. I was always sprinting to the next light source during the night.
Fantastic! The full breakdown at the start to explain what's required to finish the game really helps set the pace for the rest of the vid. Love Medievil, exciting stuff!
Considering this is one of my childhood games, it's surprising that I never even considered the speedrunning aspect of it. And what a story that was! It's great that the remaster's release brought some more attention to the original version and I guess much like Sir Fortesque himself, the speedrunning scene saw an unexpected revival! Thanks for the very informative video, it was a blast to learn all of that history!

Not gonna lie, the first half of the video felt more like "The Quest to beat NoobKiller" but when his 7 year record was taken after new tech was discovered I was eagerly waiting for him to come back and decimate the record. Good video and great narration 👍
This is an absolute masterpiece- thank you. Your storytelling, editing, data-gathering, articulate explanations made this the best video I've seen of its kind. I sincerely look forward to seeing more!
I've completed this game at least 20 times since it came out. However, I've never attempted a speedrun myself. Massive thanks to everyone involved in the speedrunning community, and a special thanks to you Pap for gathering every bit of information on this topic and keeping the legacy of this game alive.
Won't lie I almost skipped this video but curiosity led me to watch it, mostly because this game was a childhood game I played a LOT and hilariously enough I discovered it and wanted to play it form those demo discs that used to get shipped out way back in the 90's/2000's. And it was surreal to see this game be so breakable and quick to beat, absolutely insane what these guys did to lower the record so much and just crazy to see how much lower the time can still go, but its what makes speedruns so much fun to watch, the fact that they can almost always go lower. Thank you for a good video and a trip back through time for me, now I gotta go dust off my own copy I still own of the game and play it all over again c:

Scrolling through my recommended videos and what should I find, if not a comprehensive history on the speedrun of one of my favorite childhood games. The MediEvil TAS done by Torn was the one that introduced me to TAS and speedrunning in general, and remains one of my favorites to this day, even if it's been long since obsoleted. Amazing job on the video, definitely subscribing!

This was the first game i personally played and have memories of. This actually is super amazing to see it explained in a speedrun! 21+ years ago I couldn't believe how cool this game is!
As someone who found your channel through your punch-out content, I think my favourite thing about this (fantastic) video is your introducing each of the players. Feature length documentary about one of my favourite games growing up? Hell yeah! How recent some of these discoveries are is amazing. This is such an underrated title and I wish more attention was brought to it.
For some obscures reasons, RUclips recommanded me your Spyro 2 Speedrun history (I don't watch that many Spyro videos to begin with) but it was entertaining nonetheless. And I saw THIS video in your channel, I was like "Ooooh boy, one of my favorites games get a Speedrun history as well ? Better watch it, it can't be THAT hard to speedrun Medievil right ?" After seeing this whole video, mad props and kudos to each of theses speedrunners for improving the WR despite all the hard tricks everywhere.
Oh man, this was like a telltale from childhood, with a game i still love to date, then the community, the progress and improvement in runs, and all this massive skill condensed in a single video. Love everything about this, perfect video.
Damn man just gotta say you're making some awesome vids lately like the deeper dives on MTPO and now stuff like this. Really hope to see more of the speedrun history type videos, always so cool to hear about the stories that can be lost when you're just looking at records on leaderboards.
Awesome video! It is a bit curious to me that that community accepts the soldier despawn glitch, given it only really works on LESS accurate emulators (without doing the crazy stuff you mentioned at the end that don't sound viable). I guess every community has different standards about that sort of thing, but it sounds funny in a vacuum to say "oh, you can lower your world record times by seeking out the equivalent of a knock-off Chinese Playstation that doesn't run the game quite right" :D
The best video of a game's speedrun history I've ever seen, everything from the pacing to the explanations of the tricks to the storyline was impeccable. Thank you!
This was outstandingly well put together. With so many different challenges and skips it's a true test of ingenuity, it must have been a challenge to gather all of the relevant information. Thank you for putting the effort into making this, it was a pleasure to watch!
Absolutely stellar work on this video. Having followed Nazz and NKR for some time now, I still managed to learn so much about the history of the speedrun and its tricks. Top tier production!
this is absolutely incredible!! very well explained and quite easy to understand and follow for someone who has never even heard of the game!! the editing was just topnotch too! had my eyes glued to the screen!! amazing work!!!
Simply amazing video through and through. You rekindled me with this game. I need to replay through it.. well I should say play as I never got passed the asylum as a kid.

11:27 The "inventery" menu??? LOL All jokes aside, I really enjoyed this game growing up. I highly recommend getting the PS4 remastered version, which can also run on the PS5!
WOW what a ride! Such a great and entertaining video. Thank you very much for this well produced and informative masterpiece!! And also a massive thank you and respect to the community. MediEvil is a childhood game and it takes a special place in my heart and memories. So lovely to see, what it still brings today!
I _loved_ this speedrun documentary, you're definitely on par with Summoning Salt with your thoroughness and clear explanations of the tricks and the history. I only had one of the PS1 demo discs so I only ever got to play the Graveyard, but it was one of my favorite games on there, along with Brave Fencer Musashi and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. There was just something so... magical and gloomy about it that I didn't get to see again until the N64 version of Rayman 2. I always love to watch speedruns for it when it comes up in marathons, so I knew some of the tricks, but you explain them really well. Definitely earned a sub, looking forward to seeing what else you've got planned!
Honestly best video I’ve seen in so long! Honestly it would be cool if you can do a history video on Medievil 2 and the first one as well and talk about the stories and cool stuff behind the scenes because you’re honestly so great in explaining honestly
Since it's release I have rewatched this video 8 times all the way through. I don't often leave comments but this video is absolutely awesome and super rewatchable. Well done Pap.
@@Papamanual I have adored the game and the community surrounding it since childhood this video encapsulates everything amazing about this game, thanks for providing an amazing piece of content :)
This is the best speedrun explanation ever please make more of this kind It was never boring even if it was a hours long, no it was almost 2 hours i was soo hooked that it felt like it was a 30 minute video good job m man
Everyone knows what it feels like to see a game they played as a child get speedrun once you're a cynical adult and you see how small and put together it really was, but even after all I've seen, it still feels like something else to see it happen to Medievil for me. The world map and the different routes you could take blew my mind as a little seven year old, the game felt gigantic and like something I could only experience and explore but never fully understand. It's so weird seeing beaten in twenty minutes. I like that you gave some flavor towards the actual game and Sir Dan and didn't just talk solely about the gameplay aspect, it made me enjoy this more.
To be fair, you can't beat the game in 20 minutes without huge glitches and perfect play. The game has a lot more depth outside of that, and it still exists to be experienced and explored in the way that you remember
Amazing video, after that I watched your Spyro video too, two excellent videos, well researched and written, congrats! I've never player MediEvil, but after watching the history of speedrunning I got interested in the game. I hope you make more videos like this.
Bro amazing video and finally something that breaks from the monotony of all those Mario and Zelda speedruns, well done and hope to see more of your work
Finally 100% this game in 2022. Remember renting it all the time as a kid in the 90s and it was too scary/difficult to get past the enchanted forest part.
Hey Pap, I watched this over the course of a couple days and I want you to know that It was not only great at scratching my nostalgia itch for a game I played loads as a kid, but was also extremely educational! I look forward to more!
Great video. The whole story of NKR being at the top of the leaderboards, far beyond everyone else for so long is something that is so relatable. I have been in that exact position for many years in some of my main speedgames and things like that are very common for smaller speedgames. No matter how much you enjoy a speedgame, you may simply have minimal motivation to improve your time (even if there is a clear goal you want to achieve) as you are at the top, the game is extremely difficult and you have no real top level competition. No matter how simple that goal may be to achieve in theory, you simply can't bring yourself to achieve it as the game is so hard and there is no threat towards your current world record. Seeing NKR take long breaks from the game after achieving new PBs made me think "a ha, that makes perfect sense. Been there, done that". Mad respect for him for pushing this game so far, even at the times where he had no real competition.
Man! I played OG medievil back in the day and I immediately fell in love with it. I was completely unaware of its fanbase. Idk why but I feel so welcomed here.
Seeing such a well made documentary on MY game brought me so much joy, seeing someone so passionate to deep delve into research and ask everyone possible for any and all information is dedication I wish to see in more people, very well done and thank you~ this is definitely one of the videos of all time ♡ (If anyones curious about why I call MediEvil my game, long story incoming. I was born October 1998 the same time MediEvil released and if I had been born male one of the names for me was Daniel but Dan would have clashed with my last name, and I was born female so no sharing my name with the main character lol. I have literally been with MediEvil my whole life, I knew every detail by the time I was old enough to speak and use a controller. I drew pictures, I made sculptures, I wrote stories, I dressed up and pretended to be Sir Fortesque, I begged my parents to get me a sword so I could train and be a great knight, I wore the disk down by playing it so much that it was unsalvagable but I still have it sat on a shelf next to my brothers old PS1. Obsession is an understatement to how much I love MediEvil, to the point where I named pets after characters and characters for my other creative works after the people who brought the game to life. I even dedicated a short story I wrote about an alternate time where Zarok won to Paul Darrow when he passed away. I never got into speedrunning since I cant handle pressure but Ive been watching them for years and following the community and leaderboards silently. I always wished that I could meet everyone who was a part of MediEvil just to thank them. When they released the remaster I had completed it almost instantly. And then the little graphic novel they released name dropped Caddy Tim as Timberly, the exact way I used to pronounce my name as a child due to a speech impediment causing me to pronounce K as T and for once in my life I didnt feel embarrassed to be reminded of a dark time in my childhood. I know its probably just a coincidence but in my mind, it felt targetted at me and like it was meant to be. There was no way all the stars aligned to share this many coincidences with my absolute #1 favourite game of all time, it had to be fate. And so, I call MediEvil my game, the game that literally connects to me so deeply and will always be a part of me, including the rest of the MediEvil franchise but specifically the first game. Sorry for the vent, I just cant help sharing just what this game means to me haha)
You know copypastas are usually this insanely in-depth... But Im glad im pretty sure that this is not one of them. MediEvil is a fantastic game with so much in-game lore (Seriously, so much enjoyment came from just reading the books within the game) I'm glad you enjoyed this game as much (eh probably a lot more lmao) than me!
@@Papamanual Haha I didnt think copypastas put any effort in; I appreciate the sentiment XD They absolutely did not have to add the books or give us so much lore but the fact that they did, they wanted us to see the world of MediEvil and immerse ourselves in it and not just see some random locations for the sake of having levels, and it truly adds so much more to the game that I believe would have felt empty otherwise. I don't know many people who would sit and read the lore books but knowing you are someone who did and appreciates them makes me happy knowing that Im not the only one hahaha, the little details deserve to be seen and Im glad that you enjoyed MediEvil just as much! Its honestly the best thing in the world to see how games bring people together who otherwise you'd never know existed, and certainly it has gained you a new subscriber and I cant wait to see more of your content and share that same passion for other things ♡
@@kabxksb MediEvil is a huge part of me and brother's life ever since we've watched our gaming uncle playing it on his PS1 when we were little (heck, my brother is one of the admins for the Wiki)
@@KaminoKatiethats so cool! I'll be sure to think about him whenever I go to the Wiki for anything hahaha. Honestly just watching someone else playing MediEvil is just as good as playing it yourself, I loved watching my dad play it. I even took over when he struggled with a stage and thats what helped me not be scared of the game as I used to panic and cry when facing certain enemies lmao (mostly Pools and Ghost Ship, he hated playing them and got salty when his 6 year old could play them close to flawlessly 😂)
I love your videos last week I was having a panic attack I don't know why but I needed a video to help relax me and I decided to watch this video due to my love for speed running and medievil and I was not disappointed with your videos they are very calming and enjoyable Thank you for your hard work and effort
One thing I didn't see mentioned was a particular quirk of the remake... namely that it houses the _original_ version of the game as well. This raises a question: how does that play with Soldier Despawn and general load times?

How recent some of these discoveries are is amazing. This is such an underrated title and I wish more attention was brought to it.
Medievil really is a masterpeace. Not just for the story, humor and soundtrack. This made me realise how well everything works.
Really excited for new vid.
The detail you go into is fantastic.
One of the most creative and fresh games of the era. Great video! Thanks for making it!
Better watch it, it can't be THAT hard to speedrun Medievil right ?"
After seeing this whole video, mad props and kudos to each of theses speedrunners for improving the WR despite all the hard tricks everywhere.
I really enjoyed watching this, thank you for putting it together.
That, was, amazing! Thank you for putting this together, highly entertaining!
Oh man, this was like a telltale from childhood, with a game i still love to date, then the community, the progress and improvement in runs, and all this massive skill condensed in a single video. Love everything about this, perfect video.
Love the storytelling with NoobKillerRoof as this unbeatable godmode player that all the runners respect.
I've been a huge fan of medievil since I was a kid and I had no idea there was even a speedrunning scene this video is gonna be a joy to watch
This is true - as far as I know, they decided to go by what was most fun for everyone.
Emulator is the most accessible way to run the game, and on the most popular emulator at the time, soldier despawn worked, so we stuck with it
@@NoobKillerRoof makes sense!!
The best video of a game's speedrun history I've ever seen, everything from the pacing to the explanations of the tricks to the storyline was impeccable. Thank you!
Almost two hours of speedrun history for a kind of obscure game I played as a kid. This is the content I crave.
NoobKiller being so dominant in what he does, is scarily accurate with his name.
My name originates from playing CoD. I do the same over there 😂
This was outstandingly well put together. With so many different challenges and skips it's a true test of ingenuity, it must have been a challenge to gather all of the relevant information.
Thank you for putting the effort into making this, it was a pleasure to watch!
As an "adult" with no time to play and 8 hours to survive at work, thanks for this content. Always appreciated.
Absolutely stellar work on this video. Having followed Nazz and NKR for some time now, I still managed to learn so much about the history of the speedrun and its tricks.
Top tier production!
It must have been an insane amount of work to puzzle all this together.
Super fun to watch - thank you!
this is absolutely incredible!! very well explained and quite easy to understand and follow for someone who has never even heard of the game!! the editing was just topnotch too! had my eyes glued to the screen!! amazing work!!!
Genuinely fantastic video, great work!
Simply amazing video through and through. You rekindled me with this game. I need to replay through it.. well I should say play as I never got passed the asylum as a kid.
These speedrun stories are some of the absolute best i-would-have-never-thought-this-is-interesting-enough-to-spend-an-hour-and-a-half-watching-a-video-about-but-here-we-are videos
I´m still fascinated with speedrunners. To hell with magicians and illusionists - speedrunners can force me to yell "HOW?!" even now!
I learned more about this game in the first minute of this video than any other video for the past 15-20 years, thank you
HUGE work done, huge respect dude
Wow such a long and full in-depth analysis of Medievil speedruns! Your effort and work is undeniable, the amount of time spent on this is immense. Please do more like this on other PS1 titles!
11:27 The "inventery" menu??? LOL
All jokes aside, I really enjoyed this game growing up. I highly recommend getting the PS4 remastered version, which can also run on the PS5!
He says it properly at 14:11, i think he's memeing or something
I'm so glad someone finally made a video about these speedruns! Definitely one of my favourite games 👏
You did an excellent job with this Pap, thanks for the entertainment!
I really enjoyed this! Thank you for putting so much time and production into making this
No worries, it was an enjoyable one to make.
This is such a badass review bro ceep up the amazing reviews bro your a banger .
Research, editing and thoroughness. I can easily see your channel becoming extremely popular among other speed running historians!
So THIS is why the punch out WR progressions stopped. I thought you had just stopped, but this is far beyond what I could've hoped.
I started this a long time ago and wanted to finish it rather than leave it half complete. Punch out vids will resume though :)
man im a sucker for long form world record history videos on games i have never played and will never speedrun
Since it's release I have rewatched this video 8 times all the way through. I don't often leave comments but this video is absolutely awesome and super rewatchable. Well done Pap.
Well thankyou! Appreciate the comment and watchtime :D
@@Papamanual I have adored the game and the community surrounding it since childhood this video encapsulates everything amazing about this game, thanks for providing an amazing piece of content :)
This is the best speedrun explanation ever please make more of this kind
It was never boring even if it was a hours long, no it was almost 2 hours i was soo hooked that it felt like it was a 30 minute video good job m man
I haven't watched a Medievil speedrun in a few years and I can't believe how much faster the game is now. Very informative video!
These video's must take a hell of a lot of time to produce but they are _incredibly_ enjoyable. Thank you very much for your efforts Pap!
This is one of my all time fav games, I didn't know people speed ran this. Great video man, thanks for the info! Subbed.
Your Mike Tyson single level videos are incredible. This one blows all of those out of the water.
@@NoobKillerRoof nice to hear a speed runner say that.
I really slept on this game it seems! Great video.
Great Video! I love all Medievil content so this is an awsome suprise 2 hours long!!
Man!
I played OG medievil back in the day and I immediately fell in love with it. I was completely unaware of its fanbase.
Idk why but I feel so welcomed here.
Seeing such a well made documentary on MY game brought me so much joy, seeing someone so passionate to deep delve into research and ask everyone possible for any and all information is dedication I wish to see in more people, very well done and thank you~ this is definitely one of the videos of all time ♡
(If anyones curious about why I call MediEvil my game, long story incoming.
@@Papamanual Haha I didnt think copypastas put any effort in; I appreciate the sentiment XD
They absolutely did not have to add the books or give us so much lore but the fact that they did, they wanted us to see the world of MediEvil and immerse ourselves in it and not just see some random locations for the sake of having levels, and it truly adds so much more to the game that I believe would have felt empty otherwise.
@@kabxksb MediEvil is a huge part of me and brother's life ever since we've watched our gaming uncle playing it on his PS1 when we were little
(heck, my brother is one of the admins for the Wiki)
@@KaminoKatiethats so cool! I'll be sure to think about him whenever I go to the Wiki for anything hahaha. Honestly just watching someone else playing MediEvil is just as good as playing it yourself, I loved watching my dad play it. I even took over when he struggled with a stage and thats what helped me not be scared of the game as I used to panic and cry when facing certain enemies lmao (mostly Pools and Ghost Ship, he hated playing them and got salty when his 6 year old could play them close to flawlessly 😂)
Crazy stuff, glad this gem is still being played, awesome video.
Found you from your Spyro 2 research! Super cool that you dropped a video on the only non Spyro game I run :D
I love your videos last week I was having a panic attack I don't know why but I needed a video to help relax me and I decided to watch this video due to my love for speed running and medievil and I was not disappointed with your videos they are very calming and enjoyable
Thank you for your hard work and effort
One thing I didn't see mentioned was a particular quirk of the remake... namely that it houses the _original_ version of the game as well.
This raises a question: how does that play with Soldier Despawn and general load times?
perfect timing, was just lookin for something to watch
Awesome video! Really enjoyed it!
