I love Jordan as Mark but this is one of my fave musical theatre songs ever cause of the chaotic energy, but this performance just lacked that compared to the obc & movie :(
I think Jordan is way too "cool" to play Mark. It's a character that is supposed to be clunky and awkward but he seems too outgoing and in the way to steal your girl. Jordan still did a great number, the man's got a real talent it's obvious he's made for Broadway.
Just to be clear, I'm not dismissing Rent's importance or Larson's talent. He was a really amazing composer and lyricist, there's not doubt about that, and Rent is really important for making Broadway shows reconnect to modern music and real-life, besides approaching very relevant topics such as the LGBT community and AIDS. That said, I'm not a fan of how the show approaches these topics, mainly because the bohemian life it glorifies isn't something praise worthy. Mimi tries to make Roger do drugs again, and most of the characters act like grown-up spoiled kids that think that having a regular job is selling out. Them being imperfect is not a problem, of course. There still could be a really good discussion about the struggles of growing up, getting over drugs and the cruelty of capitalism. The problem is that these imperfections are framed as features, which is really naive, and even problematic, to some degree. I think there's a really good story to be told in this musical, but the framing isn't right.
