I have a champion 40, I want to take up playing bass, mostly inspired by Lemmy(High distortion). And I don't want to buy a separate bass amp. Can you please advise me on using distortion on bass with a guitar amp?

Hi there, Vinit. Considering the tone you're after (high gain and distortion), I don't recommend using a guitar combo amp like the Champion 40. There is a risk of damaging the speaker at higher volumes. I would recommend that you invest in an inexpensive bass amp like the Fender Rumble or Vox PB10.

First off, I am in no way any kind of an expert but I can say I have been using my Ibanez Mikro bass through my Fender Champion 20 and in my opinion it works well for Motorhead songs.
I am just using it for practice and never above about 3/4 volume. You will have to play around with the settings but it will get you somewhat close to the sound you are looking for. Probably not the best thing for the little amp but I have been doing it for awhile now and haven't had any problems. I don't really care if I burn it up because it was cheap. I wouldn't recommend cranking it all the way up or trying to gig with it but in my situation it works well (for me) as a bass practice amp for old (as me) school hard rock and heavy metal. I am sure every tech savvy armchair axe slinger will have their own opinion and may disagree with me but I am just saying what works for ME. It may not be "correct" or work for everyone but it works for ME. The reason I am doing it is because the little guitar amp came almost free with my bass and it doesn't rattle my house windows like my larger amp does even at lower volume.
Good luck and rock on brother!
      Lemmy rules!!!

It's perfectly fine as long as you keep the gain and volume at a reasonable level. I would not set either above 5.

Yes, it's safe to play a bass through a guitar amp as long as you play at reasonable volumes.
