You just took me back to my early 90s teenage years where all the punks and some of the metalheads I knew had a Champion 100 because it was the only affordable 100-watt amp you could get, and it came with the bonus of being a 2x12. And they all put a Boss DS-1 orange distortion pedal in front of it to get more gain out of it. Those older ones didn't have that voice feature at all, and the only effect they had was reverb.

@@Starch1b2c3d4a Since I wrote that comment I got a new 8 string guitar (my first one, it’s the Javier Reyes sig) and have been using the EQ Devices Plumes as a boost. I can get tones that are identical to the Mesa Boogie Badlander (I don’t believe it either), to sparkling, ambient clean sounds. The new guitar is part of the reason it sounds so killer but I’ve tried my old guitars through it and they sound amazing too. In short, I don’t feel so bad about the rig anymore lol. Eventually I’d like to upgrade my amp but since I can’t find anybody to play with, it doesn’t need to be very loud, so I’ll probably get some more pedals before a new amp. My only problem with the Fender Champion is that when I do turn it up, it gets a little messy.

It will take a pounding and will never need to be maintained.

Remember those first ten years or so of digital modeling amps? Good gawd, they were awful.
The amp I actually play through most these days is a first gen Katana 50. I got it for a discount new because the store had lost the box etc for it. It's a Fender, every Fender will chug and surprisingly well. My biggest purchase regret was not buying a Fender FM 100H head 20 years ago. They were sometimes 180-200 bucks new.

I got this amp and its good but I noticed when I play "Purple Haze" intro riff, the A & Low E string notes clash together and create a "warble"... ive been playing for a couple years now. this is my "first amp"... am I at the point now that I need a tube amp & cabinet? im getting good, I can play the "Fade to Black" acoustic riff almost flawlessly.... or do I need to palm mute the A before Low E to eliminate that warble when I go from A to Low E? its a very pricy question. been playing lots of Metallica, slayer, black sabbath but then Hendrix too on a JV Modified Stratocaster 60's Vintera.

the gain will be 10 only when the volume is 10. Is there any way to fix this?

Hey Ola, New sub here! Also very very new to learning guitar and I love the tight metal chug on records like Metallica's Puppets/Justice era. Thanks for this video. I was at guitar center and got a Dean Razorback because it just looks like something I want to pick up and play all day. Then the Fender Champion 20 was just sitting close by for 70.00 USD and I really don't care much about dialing in a perfect tone until I learn to play with some degree of proficiency, so I went with the Fender on price alone. For the money, I'm happy with it as a starter amp. It's not going to get the tight, crunchy sound like Hetfields OG Mesa Boogie stack, but until i get to that point where I'm confident in dropping thousands on a good head and cabinet, I can enjoy the Champion 20. For a starter combo amp it has some decent voices and FX. High gain doesn't sound so great but that's what pedals are for right? Enjoyed your review/demo!

The Roland Cube series is also surprisingly good. This amp is a workhorse, mine is a few years old and heavily used, still sounds and operates pretty well. My only complaint is that, technically, the max settings are 9 not 10, because 1 is "off"
Edit: theres actually 3 of all of them. Also, use the tap dely. Strum, then rapidly hit the tap button. Makes a lazer gun noise. Change it from fast to slow, makes a warp space like noise.

I bought a Lyon LA5 for $12 at Goodwill. It's a tiny cheap 5 watt but it can get loud and actually sound awesome when the gain and tone are cranked on a downtuned Les Paul. Cheap "shit" solid states can be absolute gems both old and new.

I like that Fender went with the term "Black Panel" and did away with the term "Black Face," due to the term's oppressive history - American Jim Crow-era racial connotations. That slight change may not be important to some, but it hits home with a lot of people today, especially me. Thanks, Ola! You rock! 🤘🏾Chug on!

I bought a 100 used for $249...it was mint. It's just what I needed. Just add a few more pedals to dial in the exact sound I want. I like to chug and do some trippy ambient stuff to mix it up and it does just that.
