I learned how to play the entire song including solo back when I was about 16. It took me about a year to get it down and the local music store owner would always ask me to play it when I came in. He was an instructor too so it was his way of forcing me to practice. I stopped by about 5 years ago when I was in town to say Hi. He looked at me and said "well good afternoon and damn you are getting old. You know what to do, right?" and pointed the tester amp stacks. I'm 45 now and haven't lived in my home town since I was 19. He still makes me practice the solo!

That’s funny to see in print. When I was a teenager in 1980 or so, I was able to buy the Electro Harmonix Little big muff because it was NOT popular with the masses of day. I WANTED the MXR Distortion Plus, but it was too expensive. So I bought the Muff for $35 or something, all my friends said it was shit. Funny how all these years later it’s a fucking solid block of pure gold if you can find even a beat up original one, much less a shiny mint condition version. They even re released them, I think it was after Cobain got big. I wish I still had mine.
The real fear is starting to play stairway, nobody stopping you and then you realise you've never learned more than the first two bars because you've never made it further into the song...

Led Zeppelin's, "Stairway to Heaven" came out in 1971. It was so loved that everyone wanted to play it. It was played so often in guitar stores that within a few months (as I recall) it was forever banned. The guitar store employees were quite tired of hearing it. It looks like I have to address the, "NO, IT WAS WAYNE'S WORLD" punks who are obviously suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect. I'm in my 60's. I was there. Stairway to Heaven came out in 1971. I was in high-school at the time. Wayne's World came out in 1992. My best friend and I were into playing guitars. As something to do, we would cruise the music stores. Everyone was blown away when Stairway came out. It was a really great tune. People who knew how to play it would go to these places to show off. A number of students would bring their guitars into their classrooms at high-school and play it, until it got weird. The first couple times we saw this happen at the music stores it was pretty cool. Then it became a joke, "ya think when we get to Guitar Showcase, someone's going to play Stairway to Heaven, ha ha?" "Ya, probably". It finally became annoying. It got to the point where we would see a music store employee go to a guy and politely explain that they hear that song so frequently that it's really getting on their nerves, so could they please not play that song. This is what made me crack-up to see it on Wayne's World, because it made me remember the whole thing. Of course a lot of young people heard about it on Wayne's World for the first time and made the assumption that they now know everything.
This is such a clever marketing strategy. It keeps people watching, anticipating the forbidden riff, while you get shown loads of awesome gear. And then the satisfaction of seeing the reaction. Perfect!
And that’s why he is loved by the “community” I was trying to figure out how this guy played claptons guitar and this is exactly the conclusion I came too when I looked at his top vids. Highly stages set ups, recreated phone calls. The dudes in the advertising business simple as that.

Funny that's the first thing I thought of too. And it's definitely good for advertising and that's why all those vendors and store owners play along with it. The forbidden riff is a joke that was in an episode of Wayne's world from 1992 when Wayne pops into a music shop to try out a guitar. He starts to jam, but barely get off a few notes before the clerk grabs the neck of the guitar and points to a sign hanging nearby that says NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. And then Wayne says “No 'Stairway'! Denied” as he turns to the camera.
In college, a friend and I taped Stairway on a reel-to-reel and then threaded it backwards through the player. It sounds exactly like you think Stairway played backwards would sound. No secret message.

I read online that there’s a guitar store in Seattle that will give you a 15% discount if you play stairway to heaven all the way through with no mess ups
tbh let them play it .. with the caveat that if they dont do it justice in the sales persons eyes it will add 20% to the cost of each item spereately and at the end as a whole as well ... then if they got the brass ones will they play it ;)
Reinaldo Rios III amature guitarist here, the forbidden riff is a term used for easy to learn riffs that people will play constantly at guitar stores. They include Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water, Sweet child O’ Mine, or Seven Nation Army to list a few examples. Personally i have no issue with people learning the songs these riffs are from, but if your going to a guitar store have some common sense on what you play.
Some of those religious Flat-Earther folks might think they are. but really they’ve just heard it 1000 times and they’re tired or they’re doing it for the yoke

The forbidden riff is a joke that was in an episode of Wayne's world from 1992 when Wayne pops into a music shop to try out a guitar. He starts to jam, but barely get off a few notes before the clerk grabs the neck of the guitar and points to a sign hanging nearby that says NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. And then Wayne says “No 'Stairway'! Denied” as he turns to the camera.

Reinaldo Rios III amature guitarist here, the forbidden riff is a term used for easy to learn riffs that people will play constantly at guitar stores. They include Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water, Sweet child O’ Mine, or Seven Nation Army to list a few examples.
Personally i have no issue with people learning the songs these riffs are from, but if your going to a guitar store have some common sense on what you play.
As a guitar center employee i cant tell you how funny i find these kind of videos when you do them lmao, i love it lol
